    VGS vs Bypass

I had occasional bad acid reflux and my surgeon pushed heavily for bypass vs VSG. I did my research and felt that bypass was not the choice for me with the malabsorption and others experiences I’ve read/heard about. Turns out I had a hiatal hernia that they repaired while in for my VSG and it may have been the cause. I’ve had zero acid reflux or heartburn since surgery and I’m 11weeks out. Even spicy foods don’t bother me.

I violate thermodynamics and it's crap

It sounds like time for a new scale. You shouldn’t have variations like that and there are many reasonably priced ones on Amazon that work wonderfully abs also track other measurements. I think I spent $20 on mine that has all the bells and whistles and a great app. Are you weighing and measuring foods accurately and tracking the cals and macros? You’d be surprised how off eyeballing can be at times or not picking the right foods. Also, have you had a FULL thyroid panel done as well as hormones? There may be something off that is not being picked up on. Last, I start stalling when I eat TOO FEW calories. Your metabolism can shut down and less is not always more.

    Sunlight and heat

Yes, I am very heat and cold intolerant now. I think this may have something to do with the loss of rapid loss of body fat and metabolism changes.

    Protien bar

I would ask your nutritionalist as every plan is different. Mine allowed them in the soft food and “normal” diet stages. I’d stick with something easy to digest and not high in sugar alcohols like many are

    Surgery was aborted.

I am so sorry to hear you’ve been through such a traumatic and frustrating experience. This was my greatest fear as well going into surgery. I would definitely recommend a second or third opinion on this to see what your options are. I would also be sure to request a full copy of all your medical records so they can be examined by another party, and to make sure that protocol was followed correctly.

    8 months NO WEIGHT LOSS

Have you had a reliable body fat test to see where you are at: you may be leaner than you think. Also, before you tried CrossFit, were you exercising? What does your diet look like? There are a lot of variables in this.

    Favorite Grocery Products

I’m another fan of Rao’s, the stuff is the bomb and much better ingredient wise than most jarred sauces

    Knees

I have moderately severe arthritis in both my knees and was in pain all day, every day before surgery. I’m down 50lbs in 11 weeks and it has made a huge difference in my knee pain and arthritis. I noticed today that I I was able to squat down to pick something up off the floor, which would normally be completely out of the question prior. I can’t imagine how much better I’ll feel once I get to closer to my goal weight! So yes, it makes a difference!
  9. I do get a good amount of fiber from vegetables and some fruit, so I’m not too worried about the fiber aspect. Honestly, there’s a lot of “you have to do this because it’s on the plan” and then I can’t get a real explanation as to why from the dietitians. This has been a constant issue since I first started my pre op so at this point, I feel like I’d rather ask on here to see what people have experienced. I feel like the NUT is just used to people not asking questions or having to give any real answers. It’s extremely frustrating.
  10. Has anyone had issues with the majority of carb based food intolerances? It seems like the farther out from surgery I am, the more issues with even tiny amounts of carbs I have. Things like rice (white or brown, literally 1-2tbs), pasta (protein, reg, or veggie based) any type of bread being keto and high fiber or regular old whole wheat, oatmeal, or most crackers cause me to vomit or get the “foamies” very quickly. I did not vomit one time until I started my Whole Foods/normal diet. I can tolerate some potatoes, and crackers (wheat thins for some reason in particular). I always eat these with protein and lower fats and never had any issues prior to surgery or food allergies. My calories are in the 850-950 range and I get 80-100g of protein a day, I do not have my carbs low enough to be in ketosis. I tolerate almost all proteins very well from fish to beef to dairy. The only exception being lean ground beef patties and some chicken breast preparations. Veggies are also tolerated well as well as fats.

Any tall people who had surgery?

I’m tall (5’11) and currently down almost 47lbs in 9.5 weeks 😊 starting weight 339, goal weight 199.
  12. My plan wanted me to introduce bread in small amounts as well as brown rice and crackers when I was at the 4 wk mark and on solid foods/normal diet. I definitely agree with you that some can’t handle these so quickly after surgery. I did find it odd that it was recommended but I was trying to follow as close as possible to my plan goals. I’ve since realized that there’s no way I can do this and not vomit multiple times a day. I suppose it’s also been a bit of a mind twister for me not being able to follow my plan 100% to a T like I was before. I am showing good progress and am down almost 47lbs at 9wks. I just worry I might now have the right progress if I’m not following it strictly.
  13. According to his “calculations” for BMI it was right where I should be. I know better though: I’ve been very lean and with a 6 pack at 165 when I did bodybuilding. I don’t expect to hit that weight again nor do I want to. I’d be emaciated if it was for any length of time.
  14. Oddly enough, when we discussed VSG vs bypass in my initial consult, he said the usual for VSG patients is around 60% of excess weight lost long term, so that would make even less sense for his goal weight. I’ve had a lot of issues and complaints with the facility where I had my surgery in the first place, so this just adds to the list of frustrating advice I’ve been given. My surgeon can’t even get my starting weight before surgery right to track my progress correctly despite me showing him on my paperwork what I weighed the day of surgery.
  15. I was told straws were forbidden and I could never use one again. I’ve seen so many varying opinions on this and the fact that there is so much fallacy with Bariatric s in general, I gave them a try last week at almost 9 wks out. I’ve had ZERO issues with too much air or pain. I go back and forth between shaker cups, straws, and mugs and notice no difference. If anything, I find I swallow more air with a regular cup.
  16. Starting weight 339, my surgeon seems to think my goal weight should be 150. At 5’11 and competing in everything from bodybuilding to crossfit over the years with a massive weight increase the last two, I think this goal is totally unattainable. He’s going strictly by BMI based on height and not taking into account my history or frame. That said, my current goal is 220 with a long term of 199.
  17. I keep trying to look at it as a positive in terms of “bad” carbs that I can’t handle. It’s frustrating at times trying to hit daily goals for macros and only having a few different carb choices I can tolerate. Even “healthy” versions like low carb wraps or tortillas cause vomiting within 20mins :(

    No more body hair?

I would definitely get a full sex hormone panel to see if something is off. Have you been diagnosed with PCOS before? Losing larger amounts of weight will lower PCOS symptoms (excessive hair growth being one of them) for many people . How far out from surgery are you? There’s also the possibility of a vitamin or nutrient deficiency.
  19. This must be a very new procedure in the USA, I’ve never heard of it. Causing intentional gastroparesis does not sound like a safe idea for numerous reasons. Not to mention this would have to be a very deep injection and the chances of injection the wrong area would be much higher.

What's your best post op advice?

Not everything will go as planned. You can stick 100% to your post op plan and there will still be stalls, frustrations, foods that do or don’t work, and a lot of learning about your body and what it does and doesn’t like. Also, depending on your surgeon, many will have a cookie cutter plan and feedback that will NOT be applicable to all. But overall despite the frustrations and setbacks, it is 100% worth it in my opinion.

    Hashimoto's

Hashi’s is auto-immune based, so it is extremely common to have dosages lowered if you’re not having a flare up. Restricted calories and weight loss will reduce inflammation which can cause thyroid resistance. I’ve seen a few studies done where longer term restricted calories can actually improve thyroid function, so it does make sense.

    Elusive Sleep

Happened to me as well and didn’t get better until about a month post Op.Low calories and stress to the body can cause insomnia. I’d try a higher dose of melatonin.
  23. I believe Mary Ruth’s has a liquid with no iron. Zinc can also cause nausea as well, FYI.
  24. Have you had any testing to check for strictures?
  25. I can’t take bariatric vitamins because I have a severe sensitivity to zinc unless it is in piccolinate form, I also can’t take iron due to an overload. I get very nauseous from zinc even before surgery. Iron can do this as well. I’d highly suggest splitting up your vitamins into different groups, it’s less convenient but it will save the issues of nausea. I take a b complex, zinc, vit c, D-K2, magnesium, and liver capsules.
