    Do you bake for family?

I eat desserts out (part of a dessert, mostly on vacations) but I don't bake at this stage (9 months out). I used to bake as a reaction to stress, which means that if I were stress baking, I'd likely be stress eating, too. I live alone but during the pandemic used to bake loads of bread and sweets for my town. I gained 20 lbs just from the amount that I didn't give away! Granted, this was before surgery, but I know that I can eat sweets too easily even now, and I don't want to have that stuff around even while I'm getting it ready to give away. It's okay not to bake. There are plenty of ways to show your family your love that don't involve food, and this will set them up for better habits anyway.

    Peppers, Peppers, everywhere Peppers!!!

I have digestive issues if I eat onions (unless they've been cooked for HOURS) so I feel your pain! It's also hard to explain that you can eat the onions cooked INTO the chili but NOT the raw onions/scallions on top. It must be some enzyme that breaks down with heat, but it's definitely different. I also am allergic to mango skin, but not the mango. So, I just have to hope the mango is peeled well. If not, I get an itchy mouth. I don't like green peppers, but I LOVE roasted red peppers.

    My First Binge :(

I find I have a lot of trouble with slider foods when things go out of my control - like when flights are delayed or canceled and my schedule is up and the air. It doesn't help that all the stores in the airport sell chips/crisps and candy! This is such a hard beast to tame, this binging... I wish there was a simple answer! For me, I know once I buy the junk food, I'm going to eat it, and I'm going to eat it in one sitting... so for me it's better not to buy it (of course, that's easier said than done!). Shift work is so bad for our bodies, but it's a feature of so many jobs! I wish you the best of luck managing this.

    Nausea as a fullness indicator?

I get nauseous if I get way too full. But as I'm getting full, I get hiccups and sometimes sneeze. I'm 9 months out exactly.

    4 years & nauseous

Could you be dehydrated? That can cause nausea. Also, see an ENT in case it is an inner ear/balance issue. Might also be a food that used to be fine no longer agrees with you. You could try a food journal to see if there is a correlation with a particular food. It could also be anxiety/stress. There are so many things it could be. Hopefully you will find a solution soon!

I need help... Everything makes me sick

As usual, I agree with @catwoman7 I didn't like food for maybe 2-3 months after surgery. It hurt after every meal and nothing tasted good. Check in with your surgery center (even from Mexico they should be able to tell you if you need to go to urgent care).

4 days post op and feeling so sick

You just had MAJOR surgery; you can't expect to feel wonderful. It took me about 6 weeks to feel okay, and even then, I had a hard time with the food. You should feel better each day or week. If you start to feel worse, reach out to your surgery center. Hang in there!
  8. I agree with @catwoman7. It's also possible you're eating too fast, not chewing enough, or taking bites that are too large.

Eating carbs (pasta, rice, or bread )

Stalls are very common. The closer to a "normal" weight you get, the more slowly your weight loss will go and the more likely you are to have stalls. You can talk to your nutritionist to make sure you're eating the right number of calories and the right types of food for your body and activity level. You may need to eat more or less or exercise more.
  10. I'm sorry you're facing this. The biopsy might show something very small that could be removed with surgery with no medical (chemo) or radiation needed. Or it might be more serious. In either event, you would have to talk with the oncologist to determine when you might be healthy enough to have WLS. There are a lot of really good treatments for breast cancer and there are lifestyle changes you can make now to help you get in the best possible shape for both any treatment you need as well as weight loss surgery. I wish you the best!

    Overactive

I pee a lot when I drink a lot of coffee and tea. Both are diuretics and I use Splenda in both, which is a bladder irritant. Artificial sugar, caffeine, tea, and coffee will cause you to pee more, as will just drinking more. There are also medical conditions like bladder infections and interstitial cystitis. Also diabetes. I would work with your doctor to see if you might have a medical condition and also look at what you're drinking to see if that could be affecting it.

    Body Mass Index

I would suggest meeting with a dietician/nutritionist to get a good idea of what to eat and with a bariatric therapist to work on the eating disorder. Also, make sure whoever is prescribing medication for anxiety and depression prescribes medications that don't cause weight gain, as many do. Have you had surgery yet? Your profile says you are pre-op.

    Vaginal Dryness

I agree - hormones are likely out of whack, and you may well be dehydrated. But, if you have started/changed any medications that could also be the cause.
  14. I just came back from a two-week overseas vacation. I decided not to track calories because I had no idea what was in food and I wanted to try different things, like a bite of this or that that my family was eating. I ate way too many sweets, but I also noticed that because I was not "tracking to eat" (usually I serve myself a portion then add it into the tracker and finish it), I was focusing on my hunger (that's not to say I wasn't eating too much, because I was. I ended up gaining about 2 lbs over the two weeks, which is a LOT less than before surgery, when I might gain 10 lbs on a two week overseas vacation. I found that I enjoyed focusing on my hunger cues, and I am thinking about not counting calories, but I have read so much about how tracking calories is the best predictor of success in weight loss and maintenance. I am wondering if I can focus on eating healthier foods and honoring my hunger, can I continue to lose weight and then maintain? What have other people found?
  15. Um... I wasn't told no burgers! Because they are ground meat, they are easier to eat, so I often order them out, as they are high in protein and I just don't eat the bun. And at 6 weeks out she should feel restriction. Most people feel it as soon as they start solid food. But I agree: just because you CAN eat as much as you want, doesn't mean you should. I can eat as much cookies as I want, but I have to stop myself from doing that.
  16. I'm so sorry you're struggling. That sounds really hard. Have you talked to them about medications? I was hungry since day 2 after my surgery (but I did/do have restriction) and they put me on metformin and then also topamax, which have both helped. Also, what helps me is drinking a lot of coffee and tea with milk and splenda (the combination of milk and caffeine makes me feel more full) and drinking when I feel hungry, or keeping busy. A friend of mine didn't have any restriction and after her weight loss stalled they started her on ozempic. That has helped her to start losing weight again.
  17. If you are only a few days out from surgery, it might be pain from the surgery itself. I had a lot of surgical pain for the first week.

How did I get to this weight?

Yes! I was so excited to finally decide to have surgery that I told everyone. I got almost totally positive responses. My friends and family had all seen me lose and gain tons of weight. I beat myself up a lot, but that didn't work, and I needed to find something that did.
  19. If you're two days post-op, it's unlikely to be hunger pains. I was hungry a few days after surgery, which is very unusual, but I definitely did not have hunger pains that would be mistaken for cramps.
  20. Don't think about perfecting your portions, because one day you may be more or less hungry than the next. Just try to check in with yourself and see if you need the next bite (this is not easy - I'm 9 months out and I am either too full or hungry after eating). Stretching your pouch is basically a myth, at least from the recent things I've seen/read/heard from experts. Your stomach naturally stretches and contracts as you eat and digest your food. Also, you are only 7 weeks out: you will be able to eat more soon.

Pity Party - Frustrated - Venting!

I am seeing this complacency in myself this month. In a few days I will be 9 month PO and I have GAINED a pound this last month (of course, I just spent yesterday in a plane so I'm certainly retaining water). I eat sweets almost every day. I am annoyed because all the YouTube videos I watched from Dr. Matthew Weiner promised me I would be craving produce and wouldn't want sweets anymore. LIES. Not only do I still crave sweets, I can eat a fair amount of sweets and crap, and I still haven't learned to stop when I've had ENOUGH rather than when I'm FULL/stuffed. I also find that my brain wasn't operated on: I have this same desire to eat when faced with travel delays/cancellations, which happens a lot in my job. I keep trying to schedule visits with the bariatric therapist, but the office doesn't even call me back....
