What do you wish you had done BEFORE your gastric bypass surgery to get ready?
ShoppGirl replied to DianeF's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I love the idea of the letter!! -
I am scheduled for a revision. I am having my sleeve revised to the SADI on 8/7/24. I am incredibly nervous. Second guessing whether i should just go with the bypass since it’s more common. I have an appointment with the NP on the 19th. Hopefully she will help calm my nerves a little.

Congratulations on your date. Cutting the caffeine is hard. That’s what I’m struggling with right now. My problem is figuring out exactly how much I was drinking because I was getting it from various sources and just drinking it freely. Yesterday I woke up with a massive headache at like 2am. I guess I tried to cut it too much. This morning I was fine though so I think I have a better idea. I only allowed myself 4 weeks because it didn’t even take that last time with the sleeve but forgot about the headaches because last time I could take Alieve but this time I really can’t rely on that. I really hope I didn’t cut this too close. -
Yea. Mine seemed like a joke as well. I mean he did ask questions about my history and my expectations as well as what support system I had and stuff like that. I just didn’t feel like it was really on depth enough. I feel like someone who was just saying all the right things could have easily passed.

They may still consider you for the sleeve even with GERD. It’s gets super complicated and I don’t understand how he knew exactly what was causing what but I have MILD GERD post sleeve and I take only 20mg Omeprazole which controls it. The surgeon said if I wanted to revise to bypass I was good to go but if I wanted to revise to SADI that he had to do some tests first. He did a Endoscopy which found a hiatal hernia but because of my sleeved stomach he wasn’t able to turn the camera to get a good angle to determine the exact size of it. He then ordered an upper GI (I think that’s what he called it, but some call it a barium swallow test) and also a gastric emptying study). Then when he had all the results he said that the hernia is very small and he wouldn’t even repair it. Anyways, i will still have to be on PPI’S but he thinks they should control the GERD after the SADI. Many people choose the bypass so they don’t have to take the PPI’s again or if it’s so bad that PPI’s don’t always work but being able to take the occasional NSAID and the better weight loss statistics made me choose the SADI over the bypass anyways. That being said, just be aware going in that there is a percentage of people who need a revision post sleeve because they have inadequate weight loss or regain by like 3 years out. Your surgeon should go over all that with you. I have seen a few people on here say their insurance does not cover revision surgery so that’s something to consider when you make your decision. I hope I didn’t add to your confusion but it is a big decision and the more info you have the better to know what to ask at that appointment with the surgeon. My surgeon did not make me decide at the first visit either. I got to ask the NP questions every month at my weigh in and then decide which surgery I wanted (for my sleeve, the process for the revision was a little different).

Yea. We all know what is the best course of action for myself. Gotta do what you know will work for you. -

You can do it with decaf immediately post surgery until your allowed caffeine too. Mixed with the shake it’s not as off tasting. -

Don’t stock up too much on protein drinks if you can help it. Your tastes may change a little post up and tastes for sweets is a common change. I suggest going to a convenience store to get a variety of flavors in singles serves or the four packs they have at Walmart. Enough to get you through a week would probably be safe. Then you can place a grocery order for pickup on your way home from your post op appt for the ones you actually do like or order them from Amazon. (Make certain they have your brand ahead of time of course). If you do get some that are too sweet post surgery don’t toss Them right away though. Once you can have caffeine they may not be so bad mixed with coffee. Either a little as creamer in a hot coffee or more mixed with iced coffee for a “proffee” If you don’t have anyone that can get them for you if your recovery takes longer Maybe buy ahead just in case but save your receipt You may also want to be sure you have something on hand for constipation if your team didn’t tell you to already. -

Not sure if you the same but for me when I eat carbs I crave carbs. If you are like that don’t do any food funerals immediately before your pro op. It will only make it that much harder. If you have to do food funerals then just do them a week earlier and eat lower carb the week before your pre op diet. It made it tolerable for me when I did my sleeve. -
I was worried about losing too much weight too The thing is that they can suggest changes all they want but we already know how we are supposed to eat. If we could do it we wouldn’t be where we are now. Chances are you are not going to be able to stick to any diet for a full six months. I know I couldn’t. Also, the surgeries are known to help with sleep apnea and GERD depending on which one the dr feels is appropriate for you. I can’t imagine that being a reason to disqualify you. I have heard of a lot of people getting a hernia repair done at the same time as their surgery.

What’s for dinner? The non cooks version.
ShoppGirl replied to ShoppGirl's topic in Food and Nutrition
No vegan friends but working on finding a restaurant that serves it so I have some clue what I’m trying to achieve if I make it. That Walder wellness site looks like it has a lot of healthy recipes thanks. 🙏🏼 -
When I had my sleeve I would weigh myself daily (because I couldn’t help myself, lol) but I only recorded it once a week. That way I would see the downward trend better. Our weight can fluctuate by a couple pounds in either direction for so many things. We would really be better off if we would just Weigh like once a month but I get it. That’s really hard.

My SADI revision surgery is scheduled for 8/7. I currently am trying to cut caffeine. Apparently too fast because I just woke up with a headache. -

Some really great ideas. Thanks. I googled the Tempe and I’m not sure if I’m adventurous enough for that quite yet but i keep saying I’m going to attempt to make tofu And give it a try. Or should I maybe have it at a restaurant first? Just so i know how it’s supposed to taste. Do they even have tofu at non-vegan restaurants? I don’t think we have a vegan one near me. Maybe my friend does- She is in a little bit bigger town. -

Well. I am waiting on my appt to know for sure what my pre op is supposed to be because the girls at the front desk don’t know but I THINK I have two weeks left to eat what’s in freezer and panty so I don’t think I will be having anything healthy to post on here. Hopefully by the time I get back to normal foods there will be lots of new ideas to keep me on track. -
I am so thrilled you sailed through the procedure and that you got that time slot. Like it was just meant to be. Oh wow. At least she realized that she was wrong and apologized. Probably best case for you to be able to put it all behind you now anyways. You’re on a positive journey now and moving forward. No need to be looking back or holding on to negativity for something you can forgive and forget. Just a heads up it can take a few days to completely sleep off that anesthesia. I was taking naps for a while after mine. I suppose it always has made me tired with surgery but I just assumed I was tired because I was in pain and on pain meds. Nope, even without them I was extra sleepy.

Now now @AmberFL we are trying to get her to abstain for a while longer. 🤣

Made my decision, how to get started?
ShoppGirl replied to Alisa_S's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Ooh yea as @NickelChip just stated and reminded me that they may want an upper GI and/or endoscopy if you have suspected or diagnosed GERD or prior abdominal surgeries. Or some doctors just require them for everyone (I think to look for hernias before they go in there). I have Mild GERD from the sleeve so he wanted those two tests as well as a gastric emptying study prior to my deciding on which surgery is best for my revision (bypass or SADI). That was a pretty complex decision though, since I had already have the sleeved stomach and GERD. I wouldn’t expect all three for a virgin surgery. -

Yea. I guess 9 more days won’t kill you to see if you need to do the sleep study first. But after you get that appt. If I was you I would go ahead and schedule the surgeon a little while after. Mine is always booked a month if not two out. Then again I’m impatient. -
Kinda makes you wonder why they don’t just send you to an allergist to get a scratch test post op. I may actually do it now before I have peanuts or shellfish since I’m paranoid. 😂
-
I was trying it think of what else could be In most deserts that you are sensitive to if it’s not the sugar as you suspect. Maybe the dyes??

I’m afraid I can’t answer. But there is a pregnancy forum on here. I don’t know if any of them had pcos but it could be worth posting this question on there as well. As you probably know when you post to a thread that’s existing, it sends notifications to the people who participated in it already to let them know that there is new activity. Well, depending on their settings. But this could be a way to get the attention of those people who have posted about becoming pregnant post WLS but aren’t active on here currently. Just a thought. Also, try searching PCOS and pregnant using the search tool for the site if you haven’t already. Best of luck. 🤞

That’s odd but like @catwoman7 said. It doesn’t sound like textbook dumping. I would run it by your doctor. It’s also possible it’s something completely unrelated to surgery that you need to look info.

Mayne it was the nuts? Have you had them other times?? Not sure what a mild reaction is like to nuts but I have definitely heard some people develop Allergies to nuts and dairy.
