Over night stay at hospital. Yay or nay
ShoppGirl replied to Happy Stylist's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was told I would stay two nights but was allowed to go home after one. I was up and walking in recovery and on nothing but Tylenol because I had very little pain. I was glad to be there with the bed rails though because Of the epidural like nerve block they give you in your stomach. I felt as if I had done 1000 sit ups and had to pull myself up using the bed rails until that wore off. Also, even if you tolorate water well immediately as i did I would worry that without the iv it would be hard to get properly hydrated after all that and dehydration leads to nausea which I don’t do well with. I have a high pain threshold but I’m a baby when it comes to nausea so it was worth spending the night just to prevent that from happening. -
Is this right for me? A little (ok, a lot) scared...

Possibly. I was able to use another doctors notes to satisfy one month of mine. It depends on how well they documented what you were trying and whether they documented your weight, etc. -

It’s a big decision and it takes however long it takes (don’t rush it). That being said now that I have done it my only regret is not doing it sooner. Perhaps if you search a little bit on other sites about the complications of the comorbidities that you are up against if you don’t do anything and the medical interventions and possibly even surgeries that you may need down the road if you don’t have WLS you will realize that the risks of not doing surgery are worse than the risks that come with this surgery. I know for me I realized it was time to have the surgery when already at a BMI of 33 I had knee pain that kept me from exercising and without that activity I gained back all the weight I had just lost from doing my treadmill at home all through the first year of COVID. I could just forsee it snowballing to get worse and worse because my gynocologist gave me my weight history and I had gained steadily (outside of the yo yo dieting) over the last ten years at least (they could only go back that far). There is also a thread on here called weirdest non scale victories that I always recommend to anyone who is on the fence about surgery. It’s just a reminder of all the little things outside of the more obvious medical issues that change in your life when you lose the weight and there are many many little things that are not scale related. The last thing I will add is that for many of us our insurance requires six months of supervised diet before they submit for approval so starting the process while you are still thinking about it couldn’t hurt. You can always put it off if you are still on the fence after the six months but my guess is you will probably have made up your mind by then. -
I would only tell people if you think they will be supportive. Otherwise you don’t need them to be involved in this part of your life. You can choose when and if you want to ever tell them after you lose the weight.

I get how you feel. They are idiots that don’t deserve a second though but I would probably let it get to me too in all honesty. At least at this point in time you know in your own mind that you are doing everything you can to change it and you can envision yourself saying how do you like me now when you reach your goal weight and feel as fantastic about yourself as you already are.

You may want to discuss the sleep eating with your surgeon because if you do this immediately post surgery you could seriously hurt your healing tummy and it will also make sticking to your plan very difficult. Maybe there is another combination of meds you can try. I know bipolar is very difficult to treat and once you find a cocktail that works it seems insane to switch anything but there are so many options out there now maybe it’s worth trying. Maybe you can find something that works just as well without that side effect.

Surgery next week, need vitamin help
ShoppGirl replied to Vivis's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I took the bariatric advantage multi vitamin and calcium chews while I was early out. At about 6 months though I switched to pro care health bariatric multivitamin with 45mg of iron. It’s truly a one a day vitamin and it’s a capsule that’s much cheaper and was approved by my team. I have to take it with something though. I take it immediately after I finish my protein shake in the morning. Some people have to take it with food. For what it’s worth I did not lose any hair. I kept up my protein and took only those two vitamins. I honestly don’t think it’s a matter of brand of vitamin but I do believe that early out it’s safer to take the best when you are getting hardly ANY real nutrition. -
Immediately post op everything sweet tasted gross to me. I found the premiere protein clear drinks to be tolerable and the premiere protein caffe latte (it has caffeine). If you like coffee drinks the caffe latte is really good. I still drink one for breakfast daily and I am over a year out and wouldn’t need to.

Vitamins could possibly make you feel nauseous but you wouldn’t dump because of them.(dumping is from too much sugar or sometimes fat and it’s less common with sleeve than with bypass). If they do make you feel sick at your stomach you may need to take with more food or switch to a different brand.

You can gain or lose a couple pounds fairly easily. Eating a little more salt than normal retains water or skipping a bowel movement even could result in a slight gain. Try not to pay attention to the single pounds. Pay more attention to the overall trend Downwards. And do not compare yourself to others. If I did I would have been upset the whole journey. I was a very slow loser the entire time and I stopped losing 9 pounds from goal and gained some back. However, my body is very content at this weight and I do not have to do a ton of exercise to maintain it so I am happy. Some people may not be happy a few pounds above a normal BMI but if this is something sustainable I will take it. My point is, you will lose weight at your own pace and your body will tell you when your done losing. There isn’t much point in trying to anticipate the speed or total loss. And definitely don’t compare your journey to others.

April 2022 Surgery Buddies
ShoppGirl replied to Crinkles's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you have a hard time finding a crystal light flavor you tolorate you could also try cirkul. They have special bottles that fit cartridges and what’s good is you can adjust the intensity of the flavor. I haven’t ordered one yet because they are a bit pricey compared to my generic crystal light but early out after surgery that could have been a game changer when fluids were a challenge. My aunt is the one who turned me onto it. They sell them at bed bath and beyond but they have more to choose from and you get stuff free if you order direct on Their website.of course you can also adjust the intensity of the flavor of crystal light by just slowly adding water if you want too. But it is something to keep in mind cause the flavors are different. -
How much calcium??
ShoppGirl replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I’m 99% certain all they have in chews are multi vitamin and calcium and I bought the chews early out and they looked exactly like that so I’m pretty certain they are calcium. There was a phone number on their website though if you want to be 100% sure. -
What are you eating during the pureed phase?!
ShoppGirl replied to carpeediem's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
To me baby food is too bland but I have heard of people who eat it during purée phase by adding their own spices. I was satisfied by the ricotta bake and refried beans or mashed potatoes at that stage so I never tried it but it was absolutely allowed by my team. -
How much calcium??
ShoppGirl replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I don’t think I understand your question. The flavors are printed right there on the wrapper. Do you mean are they calcium or something else?? As far as I know they only make chewables in the multivitamin and calcium. Hope that helps. -
You can also put this information in your phone under medical. I’m not sure if they are actually required to look there. Seems like they would be if you weren’t able to talk for yourself.

Four days isn’t going to make a huge difference. My team even told me if I couldn’t take my vitamins for the first week or so it wouldn’t kill me. But, I say it depends on how worried YOU are going to be about it though. If you feel confident about missing Those four days after reading some of the answers here go for it, but if your going to worry about it and ruin your trip it may be worth the 30 bucks. Also, you may want to make sure to try the new iron you buy before your trip in case it causes nausea. No need to be sick while on your trip.

That’s horrible. I am so sorry your having to wait AND take all the extra time off work. Hopefully everything will go on as expected and this will just be your last little vacation before your journey. You can take the time getting things organized and in order before surgery. I know I wished I had cleaned the house right before because I was just stuck in the house looking at all the stuff I would do if I was allowed. It drove me crazy to not just do it.

What are Bariatric capsules made from?
ShoppGirl replied to Abnormal Angie's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had the sleeve over a year ago and I was never even prescribed PPI’s. It’s a doctors preference but if you are worried about taking them I would be asking if you even need anything. -
That’s fine. The soup is most likely condensed so the broth flavor will be more intense. I prefer that as well so I used the flavor packets from ramen noodles and found them to be more flavorful than other broths.

Eating terrible closer to surgery
ShoppGirl replied to mrsjo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had food funerals too. Not too many but enough. I was worried about not being able to enjoy my favorite foods ever again. Looking back it was silly because now I can eat everything I did before but if I had it to do over I may make the same choice just in case. Lol. I agree with Gradycat though that it will make the transition easier the more you can give up now in terms of carbs and sugar mostly. -
Flight home 5 days after surgery
ShoppGirl replied to TruNorth's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I forgot to add that if you do decide to do the flight that early it may be helpful to arrange for a wheel chair to get through the airport. Depending on how big the airport is, of course but if it’s a lot of walking in a rush it may be better to be safe than sorry. You can always get up and walk around when you get to your terminal and have time.
