I am going to need to tell my Father and sibs I want the surgery and I'm not exactly sure how to go about it. I am afraid I will break down in tears. We all have a weight problem. My DS just recently lost 100 pounds and continuing. My brother is a WW goer and exerciser and is doing great. I just have more trouble than the two of them. My 83-year-old dad walks 2 miles a day. I don't want them to think the worst of me, like I think this is a quick fix and that I have not considered all the risks of surgery. I need to be healthy which is the bottom line. How did some of you tell your family? Thanks, Barb in Arizona

Ugh, got to the gym and didn't have my ipod!
philtrannie replied to WorkingMom's topic in Fitness & Exercise
Workout without music is like rowing a cruise ship with half a paddle, so hard to do, but yet you did it --Yea for you. You have your eyes on the prize--a healthy you. My friend worked out the day and had her Ipod with her. She didn't realize that she was singing LOUDLY and the whole gym got to hear show tunes and oldies but goodies. At least she can sing, unlike me. I probably would have cleared the place with my howling voice, LOL. Good luck on your new healthy you adventure. You can do it, IPOD or not. Philtrannie, Arizona -
Hopeful60: Congrats--It sounds as if you are feeling the normal postop pain and you have such a great attitude. Keep it up. You are on the way. Please keep us posted. It is so exciting to see the possibilities of future and say good-bye to that old past. Best wishes and keep that recovery going, Philtrannie, arizona

It is good to know this now instead of having trouble during surgery. A lot of people have small heart murmurs and don't even know it. You will most likely have an echocardiogram and make sure all is "flowing" normally. Try and not be discouraged or scared. It'll be okay. Positive thoughts going your way. Good luck and keep us posted.

Vince, good luck on surgery and it's okay to be a little nervous about huge lifestyle change you are going to be making. But you have diligently fought for this with your insurance company. You are going to be a healthier you and that is what is all about. Health and well being. Keep us posted. This is a great website for information on the before, during, and after stuff. Yea, for being on your way. Best wishes, Philtrannie, Arizona

what to expect from 1st class/orientation
philtrannie replied to laurentayler's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I went to the seminar last night and the surgeon was the one giving the presentation and then after he explained the operative course he handed the microphone over to the person who does the insurance thing and gave us more concise information on the ins and outs. Good luck -
I was banded on 3/23/09 and I would like to introduce myself: bandedwendy

Congrats on your surgery and on the way to a healthy new you. What an exciting journey you are taking. I am just starting the process myself. Go to an informational meeting 04/01/2009. So you can inspire me as I go through this. Again welcome and congrats on your banding. -
Just take your pain medications faithfully BEFORE you get into too much pain and you won't have any problems. Congrats on your surgery date. You'll be fine.

BIG Embarassing Moments - Fuel for Success
philtrannie replied to Mamadot's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My funniest moment would have to be with my niece then 4 (now 21) asking me where I got my BIG WHITE THIGHS. My response: At the big white thigh store. Her dad turned crimson, my mom and I just laughed. I still think it is funny and I still do have big white thighs. The worst is when I was at a very swanky eatery and they told me not to sit on the chair they would bring me out one made sturdier--it was a loveseat, two men carried it out. I filled the whole thing. I have never gone back there since. It spoiled my family celebration and I remember getting up from the table shortly thereafter whispered to my mom that I was going home and I quietly left. I ended up having PB&J instead of the steak I planned to have. Well, things can only get better from here. -
I live in Tucson and need to loose 122 pounds. Like most I have gained and lost and gained and lost all my adult life. I am having more medical issues and just recently my knees started to really bother me. I am going to the seminar here in 2 weeks. I have verified my insurance does cover it. I know that this is a long process and a lifestyle change. I am up to the challange and just wish I knew the reasons why I can't flip the switch in my head and not have to resort to surgery. It frightens me. Well, here is to the start of something just for me, my health, and my new life to come. philtrannie

Working on a new and improved me!
philtrannie replied to JKEL5300's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I know exactly how you are feeling. Why can I not do this myself. Why am I . . . This is the start of something positive and for you and for me. We are doing this for the correct reasons. Health--no more sore knees, no more whatever. As for friends and relatives. I think they would rather have you here on the planet than have a serious health issue or not be here at all. Good luck -
Congratulations, a long wait now over and you are on your way to a new lifestyle and new you. Best wishes from Tucson

Just starting the process
philtrannie replied to philtrannie's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am a redhead and redheads tend to be bleeders. I also have a very high gag reflex which means if I don't handle the texture of the smell of the food/medication going down I tend to have more vomiting. I know I can handle the liquid diet, it is the puree I'm concerned about. I am also concerned about port infection. I work for TMC and although I know HIPPA is followed to the letter at the hospital, tongues still wag and curiosity still gets the best of people. I still also keep thinking there has to be something other than surgery. I do understand that this is a lifestyle change and I don't know if more counseling would help me get to that point or what. I sometimes feel I am such a big looser/failure at this that is also holding me back. I go to the seminar on 04/01/2009 and will hopefully get more answers then. -
Just starting the process
philtrannie replied to philtrannie's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am frustrated as well. I don't, though, necessarily want to fast track this. I have doubts and so many questions that need to be answered first. Fear is a big huge factor for me. Dumb huh. Barbara -
Just starting the process

I work for one of the hospitals in town and it was suggested to me to go to Dr. Schwartz, although I understand Dr. Monash is also an excellent surgeon. Most of this is how it is documented for the insurance company. I know it takes a while and I am hoping that by this time next year I've been through it and working on my new lifestyle.
