manometry -- could it preclude band surgery?
KathrynH replied to spayneuter2008's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
My sister just had that done! Said it was alot easier than she thought it would be. She is trying to qualify for lap-band, too. She hasn't heard the results yet (had it done last Tues thru Weds). THEN she has to have some sort of MRI or CAT and then swallow some kind of pill that has a camera in it. All because of the esophagus and her iron count is low and they're trying to figure it all out before the surgery. -
How long after your surgery did you go back to work?
KathrynH replied to PaulaTx's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I actually took off 2 weeks because I kept running a low temp. But once I went back to work, no more fever. I was very tired for the first 2 days (I'm a banker in a branch). But then again, I'm older than you. You can do it! -
Newbies - Watch out of dehydration
KathrynH replied to kellim's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
PJ - TXLady I ran a fever just like that and is scared me to death! It would do that in the evening. The highest was 100.7. Called nurse who told me to use the incentive spirometer 10 x per hour and drink fluids. I did that and it seemed to really help. I hear that after surgery, some people just run a low-grade temp and it's really not a fever. Just our individual body's response. Mine finally stopped when I became active over this past weekend and started back to work yesterday (2 weeks post-op). Take your Tylenol, drink, and breathe!!!!!! -
Bought this before my surgery and have worn it everyday since. Seems my regular bras are still a little tight (swelling) and this has been so comfortable! They fit true to size and stretch a mile!!! Anyway, thought I'd share: Plus Size Front Hook Bras at WomanWithin.com

GREAT Bra for post-op, ladies!
KathrynH replied to KathrynH's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was too swollen to wear my regular bra for about a week. The bra that I referenced was wonderful! I'm a 42DD and this gave me a little support with complete comfort. I like it because it hooks in the front, so easy on and off. You're not going to get full support, but it's better than braless! -
Mid Life Crisis Anyone?
KathrynH replied to Cgailee's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Oprah did a whole show about it! Women who had WLS and had lost their weight were having affairs, clubbing with their single friends, and going wild!!! This could be an issue, especially for woman who have been obese their whole lives. I think it's a self-esteem issue if I remember correctly. -
Ohh, I needed that! Just banded July 28th and ate a whole taco for dinner tonight, shell and all : ( I was amazed! Chewed each tiny bite about 100 times! Yeah - and I'll be back on this site whinining about gas pain, dang it. OK - back on mushies. Thanks so much!!!!

Do I need anything official to get through airport security?
KathrynH replied to momx5's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You won't set anything off - the device is made out of silicone and titanium. In fact, I went through security today and got a green light! -
My port hurt after pushing a shopping cart at Target yesterday. Still a little sore! I'm 3 days shy of 2 weeks post op.

Does anybody NOT throw up?
KathrynH replied to ohjuly7878's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I worried the most about this, too! They understood my fear and gave me the option of wearing a patch behind my ear (the same kind they give you to wear on cruises, etc I think called a TransDerm). I did and the only side effect was blurred vision which went away as soon as I got home and took it off. I will not have surgery ever again without one! -
GREAT Bra for post-op, ladies!
KathrynH replied to KathrynH's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Dunna, I hope you like them! I even sleep in mine. If not, that place is really good about returns. Just gives you some support without the pain of a real bra. I wore one home from the hospital. Good luck with your surgery! -
Pain meds are making me nautious...
KathrynH replied to Ellen86's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Follow your doctor's orders, even if it means off the narcodics. Have you tried your Liquid Tylenol? It will taste gross to you but you will get used to it! Plus, the sooner you're off the Vicatin the sooner you'll go "potty" (causes constipation). I'd hold off on the cottage cheese until next Monday or Tuesday. I'm 10 days post-op now, so guess that makes me an expert LOL!!! -
I added a little almond extract (1/4 teaspoon) to the chocolate and a little lemon extract to the vanilla. I didn't like my shakes cold or with ice. Just used about 5 ozs of water and got 'em down! It gets better about the 4th day, I promise. Save your last shake for bedtime and you'll sleep better!

HELP!!!! Having a hard time on Pre-op diet!!
KathrynH replied to Leslee's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I followed my 2 week preop to the "t" and lost 8 lbs. But I was disappointed to learn that my liver did not shrink due to diabetes. I would not have gone through the starvation if I had known that - that was boderline cruel. -
Hey! Glad to hear you're doing good. Me too! Although I had a hiata (spell?) hernia, but he was able to repair it. BONUS!!! Running a low-grade temp but I hear that's normal for the first few weeks for some people. Makes you feel bad, though. Not real hungry yet, though (thank goodness). Wonder how long that will last? Anyway, HAPPY ONE-WEEK ANNIVERSARY TO US!

Hello! I'm a newbie here. Well, I'm getting banded on July 28th by Dr. David Kim at North Hills Bariatric in North Richland Hills, Texas (Ft. Worth area). And if it doesn't come soon I'm going to be big as a BARN as every dang meal I eat is as though it's my last

August 1st - surgery day
KathrynH replied to lsullivan68's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Oh, wow! I'm 4 days post-op. I remember that I could not sleep the night before. I'm not sure if anybody told you this but you will get a shot of heprin in the belly to prevent blood clots. I didn't know that! But it doesn't hurt. Anyway, they also might find a hiata (spell?) hernia which is not unusual. Also, your mouth will not just be dry, it will be like the Sahara Desert!!! My throat was also pretty raw from the tube and still is. I've developed an anoying and somewhat agonizing cough because of it. Also running a very low-grade fever is common. But EVERYDAY is a new day and you will be amazed at how fast you recover from this. Good luck! I'll be thinking of you, a fellow Texan! -
This is my 2nd day post-op and I'm running a fever 100.4. Is this normal? My nose has been bleeding, just slightly. Just scared of pneumonia . . . yikes!

Why am I struggling so much with the Pre-op Diet?
KathrynH replied to liquidbluegal's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would have LOVED to have had your pre-op diet. Mine was 5 Optifast shakes daily. I was hungry, too but not afer the 1st week. Are you losing weight? You might want to make healthier food choices. Stay away from eating out and fast food (but you really know that already, right??!!) Even though you're staying within your caloric guidelines, you really should be watching fried food, beef, carbs (bread). I just made sure that my last shake was at bedtime so I went to bed with a full tummy. Just hang in there - I'm 4 days post-op and it is all worth it!!! -
Thanks to all of you for the replies about my fever & nosebleeds. As it turns out, I took your advice and called Dr. office and they had me come in (I started oozing liquid from the port incision). They said the fever is not unusual and as long as it doesn't go over 100.5 not to worry about it. The nose bleed was from the heprin shot and as long as my gums were not bleeding when I brushed then all is fine. The seepage from the port was from my ON-Q pain management catheter. They took it out and I've since not had a nosebleed or fever since! I love you guys - could not make it without you ALL. God Bless. xox, Kathy

How do I get all of my protein in?
KathrynH replied to Long2BFree's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow! You have to have 70 grams? They told me at least 50. So I drink a 30 gram protein suppliment. It's ready-made and called "Premier". Comes in little juice like boxes and available at Costco. I believe they are 160 calories with 1 gram of sugar. The rest you could get from scrambled eggs (6 each), milk 8 oz (6.3), cheddar cheese (my fav!) 3.5 oz (25), etc. There's a really good book that has become my best friend. It's simply"Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies". Has lots of ideas and recipes you might enjoy. Good luck! -
In the book "Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies" on page163 it says "If you vomit, stop eating and drinking until the nausea passes (well DUH). Repetitive vomiting to the point where liquids cannot go down is potentially dangerous. If this occurs, contact your surgeon immediately." I would imagine that the surgeon would prescribe medication to stop the vomiting (a suppository perhaps?). Really good question that I bet few of us have thought about.

when does the pain/soreness END!!!
KathrynH replied to Sasha2013's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks, crzytchr, for your reply. I called surgeon's office and the nurse did want to see me right away (I was running a low-grade fever). It wound up being my On-Q catheter! My body couldn't absorb all of the medicine it was giving to me so had no choice but to push it right back out of the port incision. So she removed it and no more dripping fluids.
