  1. I also had really intense constipation for the first month after the sleeve. I took Benefiber and stool softeners and drank 90 oz of water a day, but I still had long bouts of painful constipation (5 days or more). At my one month check-in with the nutritionist, she told me it was fine to use Milk of Magnesia every other day prophylactically until I started getting more plant fiber in my diet. She also told me to add chia seeds to my Greek yogurt. This worked for that second month and, now 2.5 months out, I am able to eat more veggies and not taking the Milk of Magnesia anymore and am totally regular lol. TL;DR In my experience, getting enough fiber gets easier every week. Talk to your surgeon or nutritionist about Milk of Magnesia. My nutritionist didn't want people relying on it indefinitely, but was fine with me using it very regularly for a month until I started getting more fiber.
  2. Where do some of these NEVER restrictions come from? It seems like if there were evidence that a food was very harmful to a VSG pouch, there would be widespread agreement that it was always off-limits. Do some surgeons have anecdotal bad experiences with certain foods like popcorn? Or is this all based on theoretical harms (surgeons imagining bad things that could in theory happen with certain foods)?

I have been wondering what evidence some of the differing post-op diet recommendations were based on (my recommended diet is also a bit different than what I see recommended here) so it's fascinating to hear that there is so much ongoing research, especially on the science around regain.

    I've also been adding a little bone broth to all my meat in the final stage of cooking. I'm finding it makes everything a little moister and easier to swallow.
  5. My tongue has had a tan coating since the day after I had the VSG 1 month+ ago. Does anyone know what this is? Google searches seem to suggest maybe ketosis tongue? My surgeon seemed surprised and suggested that it was just bone broth. (Which I know it is not because it started before I could even get bone broth down.) I bought a flexible plastic tongue scraper, which is useless in removing the coating. The only thing I've found that works so far is to put baking soda directly on my tongue and a brand new, stiff brush head on my electric toothbrush and brush it off. I don't mind doing this except for that I am changing brush heads every few days (after a few days they are too soft to "sand" it down) and they are expensive! Anyone else have experience with this and an effective way to remove it?
  6. I also assumed thrush (thinking back to when my kids had it on their tongues as babies) but I saw an ENT and he said no and just recommended the tongue scraper! I actually begged for a Nystatin prescription which he gave me saying I didn't need it. I tried using it for a week and it did nothing so I stopped. I'll try the warm saltwater rinse! Thanks for the replies!

    You mention you're looking for good broths....I have been so happy with the Kettle & Fire brand bone broths. I've tried a few different brands (and made my own) and the K&F ones are my favorites. Pricy, but delicious!
  8. Hi everyone! I'm 2 weeks out from VSG. I've only told my spouse and am lucky enough to work from home until likely the fall so have some time to think about how to handle talking about weight loss. There are a couple of thin people in my life, including a coworker, who have always been very nosy about what I eat and how much. I think my body was a kind of "worse case scenario" for them and they were always looking for ways to remind themselves how not to become me. This always annoyed me because, for the last three years, I have eaten very healthfully. Of course there were many years before that when I didn't eat as well. But for the last three years, I really pretty much ate the way I did when I was thin. Lean protein, non-starchy veggies, whole foods, etc. I am certain I ate no worse than the people who were nosy about my diet. And I would lose 10 pounds here and there, then gain a bit back, but never made a real dent in my excess weight....which is why I decided on WLS. I've looked through a lot of the old threads about how people talk about their weight loss to people they don't want to reveal WLS info to and a big thing a lot of people say is "I changed my diet." This is great because it's not a lie, but I also kind of don't want to give the few people in my life who were so nosy about my diet and I think assumed I was bingeing junk food the satisfaction of saying my diet needed changing... I don't know if anyone else is in this situation? Or if I'm just being petty and proud? lol
