I’m scheduled to get my sleeve in a month (yay!) but I’m afraid it’ll worsen my gerd. I’ve heard on here that some people get their hiatal hernias fixed when they get their surgery. Does having a gastric surgery automatically fix the hernia or is it something extra that your doctor has to do? I developed a tiny hiatal hernia over the last year and I’d like to have it fixed with my surgery. My surgeon knows about it but hasn’t mentioned anything regarding fixing it. Should I bring it up beforehand or is it something that gets fixed with surgery anyway?

None of the therapists in my area operate on a sliding scale, I’ve asked. I’ve done the virtual meetings before but never found them to be particularly helpful. But thanks! I’ll keep looking.

I’m scheduled for a gastric sleeve in a few weeks because I’ve been heavy all my life and can’t lose weight any other way. I found some of my old doctors notes last night and noticed that I started the year 2016 at 190lbs and ended at 250lbs... that was also the year I was in an abusive relationship. The only weight I’ve gained since then is 20lbs of “and then some” weight from failed diets. I had never noticed before that most of my weight gain occurred during that period of my life. During that year I knew I was gaining a little weight but didn’t think it was that much and never thought I used food to cope or anything but I obviously did. I don’t know if it’s a good thing or a bad thing. On one hand it may be easier for me to keep the weight off as long as I don’t fall into any more toxic relationships. On the other hand the fact that I didn’t notice that those were related before now may be problematic when other stressful things happen in my life. Anyone else have a similar situation where your weight gain happened in a short period of time because of a stressful life circumstance? Did surgery help you if so?
-
Like I said, I don’t think I cope using food on a regular basis. I’ve tracked food for years now and there aren’t any patterns that suggest emotional eating outside of that one period of heavy trauma. I guess that’s why it never occurred to me that the trauma caused my weight gain because I haven’t been an emotional eater before or since. Maybe it happened because my other methods of coping were cut during the abuse (he wouldn’t let me see friends and I was too depressed to do my usual hobbies)? Idk. But thanks for the advice, that is a good way to ensure that I don’t fall into that again post-surgery without realizing it if something else happens. I’ve been trying to find a therapist to talk about these things with but they’re so expensive!

COVID VACCINE- Did your Doctor tell you to wait a specific amount of time before getting Vaccine after surgery?
Circus321 replied to Tim C's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think they want you to wait to make sure your body is up to the task of fighting it off. My dad’s friend got the shot not knowing that he had recently had COVID with no symptoms and he died because his body wasn’t able to fight off the shot so soon after fighting off the virus. And he was a doctor so he had more information about it than the average person. There’s just so much that’s still unknown about COVID and the vaccine, I’d follow any guidelines they have set based on what we DO know. I’d personally wait, especially if you’re not going to be back at work where you’re around strangers all day everyday. But like you said, you’re an adult so do what you want. It’s all just scary to me. Hope it goes well! -
Goal weight achieved, but now, how do I eat healthy? Need tips please!
Circus321 replied to CrowLuv's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Idk if you’re still struggling with this but you should definitely see a nutritionist. This is literally what they do and I think it would really help you get an idea of what healthy eating looks like for you individually. Good luck! -
I’m having my sleeve done at a clinic about a 4 hour drive away from my home. I’ll only spend one night in the hospital and I can’t decide if it’ll be better to spend another night in a hotel near the hospital to heal more before the drive home or if it’ll be better to go straight home where I’ll be more comfortable. Anyone with a similar experience and opinion? Was the ride home from the hospital rough for those of you who had a longer trip?

Ride home from the hospital
Circus321 replied to Circus321's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know it’s very individualized as to how people feel afterwards but I’m one of those people who plans everything so the unknown makes me nervous lol. I guess I’ll just have to see how I feel afterwards. Thanks! I wish you the best too! -
Ride home from the hospital
Circus321 replied to Circus321's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for sharing your experience! It helps. If I can sleep on the ride home too I think it’d be doable but I’ll have to entertain my 3 year old too so I probably won’t be able to sleep the whole way -
Surgery a week out and having second thoughts.

I’m in a similar boat as I’m also young. I’m F24 and 274. I’m scheduled for a vsg on the 25th but I kept having doubts. My decision was solidified for me when I was denied the loan I was pre-approved for (I’m self-pay). I spent 3 days thinking that I couldn’t get it and I re-discovered all the reasons I want/need it. Luckily I found another loan but it was a scary few days lol. I think the vsg isn’t supposed to have as many long term effects as the ds or the bypass. And like someone else said on here the most common regret I’ve seen is people wishing they’d done it years earlier -
I had an always-been-skinny friend who gained about 80lbs on the depo shot, and I’ve known of other girls who have gained a lot from it too. I’m glad it’s worked well for you but unfortunately substantial weight gain is a very common side effect with that one

Condoms? Won’t affect your weight and are pretty reliable. I can’t use hormones at all because they cause me to have seizures (I have epilepsy) so that’s what I’ve always used. You could also use a cervical diaphragm or sponge if you don’t want to do the condom, I know it can be hard to use a condom every time with a long-term exclusive partner, and those are also pretty reliable barrier methods that won’t affect your weight but feel a lot more “freeing” than a condom lol. When I was researching options my doc told me that the Nuvaring and the patch have by far the lowest side effects for hormonal birth control, and the copper IUD doesn’t have hormones so it’s supposed to have few side effects as well. Good luck!

Is maintaining as hard after surgery as before surgery?
Circus321 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’ve been able to lose weight from diet and exercise, my problem comes with keeping it off. At my lowest weight I got down to 173 and couldn’t lose another pound. But to maintain that weight I had to exercise at least 25 hours a week and eat no more than 1000 calories a day. I kept it off for a few years but eventually gained it back because that’s obviously not sustainable. If I get down to that weight with surgery should I expect to have to do the same things to maintain that weight as I did before surgery? Or will it be easier? -
2years post op need working dieting advice
Circus321 replied to BlueAngelEyes's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I did keto for a while and it’s really hard the first few weeks but then after you get in ketosis it’s much easier. You can’t have bread at all on keto. The only carbs you should eat are green, non-starchy vegetables, which are easily under 20g of net carbs a day (net carbs=total carbs minus fiber). Focus on meat, cheese, and green vegetables. I lost a good amount of weight with keto but it gave me gallbladder and stomach problems so I had to stop and ended up 20lbs higher than I was before. So I don’t know if I’d recommend it, but that’s how to do it. -
Hiatal hernia and gastric sleeve
Circus321 replied to Circus321's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks! Because of the logistics of the procedure I thought they would have to repair it anyway (in diagrams it looks like they remove the top part of the stomach that would be herniated) but I’ll let him know beforehand that I have one and want it fixed if possible while he’s in there -
Lol I just can’t with you. You’re literally not listening to, considering, or respecting anything anyone else has to say while expecting us to do the same for you and take what you say as fact. That’s “interesting” considering that your “facts” have been proven scientifically and medically wrong. You’re not even on the same page as the people you’re arguing with because you haven’t even tried to understand what they were trying to say. Lol. I’m unfollowing this conversation so don’t bother replying, I won’t see it. But in the future try to remember that as a community where we’re supposed to support one another we have to LISTEN to each other and respect others’ opinions and experiences, even if they contradict ours. You might learn something you didn’t know if you open yourself up to listening to others. Good luck on your journey 👍

Also I don’t think anybody ever accused you of anything? No need to get defensive lol

Your body feels actual hunger whether or not you have the actual sensation of being “hungry”. It’s physically impossible for your body to not be hungry and you to lose weight. So I’m not assuming, I’m stating a medical fact lol
-
I think she meant that you were assuming that your personal experiences apply to everybody. That might be your experience but not everybody experiences the same things after wls. You will feel both real hunger and head hunger as you’re losing weight, it’s part of the process. Your body has to be hungry in order to consume your fat. She meant that calling any hunger someone experiences on their weight loss journey “head hunger” is frustrating because our bodies are actually hungry too. I understand what you meant about not all calories being equal but even if you’re only eating good calories you’re still experiencing a caloric deficit (which is necessary to lose weight) and will thus feel actual hunger. As well as the head hunger from not eating as much/the same things as you used to. I don’t know why people are so easily offended and wanting to fight on these forums. Maybe it’s because we’re all hungry all the time 😂

Bariatric multivitamin
Circus321 replied to Circus321's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Has anyone tried the multivitamin patches? -
Any recommendations on good bariatric vitamins for a reasonable price? Or combination of vitamins? Also, any liquid ones you can take right after surgery? Thanks!

Bariatric multivitamin
Circus321 replied to Circus321's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks for the info. I’ll definitely get some chewable ones then for after my surgery and then switch to capsules. I have trouble absorbing b-12 regularly and have had to switch to injections during all my pregnancies because I don’t absorb enough from the tablets alone, that’s why I think I’ll have to switch but we’ll see. Thanks a lot, you’ve been very helpful and I truly appreciate it! 😊 -
Bariatric multivitamin
Circus321 replied to Circus321's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks that’s really helpful! I was actually looking at the BariactricPal vitamins but some of the reviews said they were big and had a bad taste so I wasn’t sure. I already take B-12 sublingual liquid but I was going to talk to my doctor about switching to injections because they’re better absorbed. Did you have trouble with pills at first? Are the chewable vitamins necessary after surgery or personal preference? Thanks again! -
I'm Freezing
Circus321 replied to HealthyLifeStyle's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is very common with rapid weight loss, it means that your body is in starvation mode and trying to conserve energy any way possible. This is actually very common to experience with eating disorders as well, especially anorexia -
