61 year old retired teacher. I coached high school sports for 20 years, taught high school science, was an active bicycler, hiker, and backpacker. But I loved to eat ... just about everything. Both parents were heavy, my mom (a diabetic) had lap band at 70 years old to try and save her from an old age in a wheelchair (with limited success but it probably gave her an extra 10 years of life). I was diagnosed as pre-diabetic and at 270+ pounds knew that I had to do something drastic to avoid that same fate.
Fortunately my service in the navy qualifies me for VA care ... and they are quite good at this (which makes sense if you think about their clientele). Great doctors, great team, and tremendous support.
Surgery date was Jan 20th 2021. I'm writing this on Jan 23rd and already feel pretty good. Looking forward to a full recovery and progression on diet and then significant weight loss.
