When did you get water/ice chips after VSG?
KellyMarie8288 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hello, How long after surgery did you have to wait to wet your whistles? Lol. I'm a little panicky over dry mouth. I'm a HUGE water drinker so of all things this is stressing me out most right now. I'm scheduled for 1/18 (after two cancelled dates!). Sent from my Pixel 3a using BariatricPal mobile app -

Pre-op advice from a PostOp'er
KellyMarie8288 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello! I'm 4 weeks post op and thought I would come back here to share what I have learned over the last 4 weeks. [emoji3590] My experience since surgery has been nothing short of incredible. I'm not speaking in terms of massive weight loss, but my energy, focus, well-being, mental clarity, and state of mind. The weight loss is a bonus. Looking back on my 8 month journey to the OR, I realized that the most crucial piece of advice I received came from the most unlikely of individuals on my path, the psychologist who did my psyche evaluation. She told me that the single best thing I could do for my recovery in the time before my surgery was to practice hitting my program Protein and fluid goals before surgery and to practice liquid Meal Replacement. I had more time than expected between this appointment and surgery (5 months versus 8 weeks due to multiple delays and reschedules), but I kept on doing this. I started by replacing Breakfast with my Protein Shake and monitoring my Water intake. I eventually worked up to hitting 70-90 grams of protein daily and my minimum 90 ounces of water. I still ate, but only after I was at my minimum protein goal. It wasn't an doctors order, it wasn't required, but I took her advice to heart and it has paid off in droves. Within days of my VSG, I was well on my way to hitting my goals again, with little head hunger or emotional discomfort with a liquid diet. I wasn't stressed or had any 'buyers remorse'. This is one small thing you can do for yourself on the way to make the lifestyle change a smooth transition. Best of luck! Sent from my Pixel 3a using BariatricPal mobile app -
Hello! My surgeon cleared me to resume activity as normal on Tuesday and I went back to the gym on Wednesday. Nothing crazy, 25 min of light cardio and about 20 minutes of light strength training. Thursday morning I woke up feeling off, and the more sore my muscles got the worse I felt. Like yucky. Just completely worn out. I'm hitting my protein and fluid goals (90oz and 90g) daily. I am just over 4 weeks PO, but like I said, cleared for activity. Too soon for the strength training? Should I try weights again in a few weeks? I was so certain I was going easy on myself, lol. I came across the following article this morning: https://www.cnet.com/health/why-its-so-hard-to-lose-weight/ Notice anything about the theme regarding the six reasons they gave? They all have to do with faulting the individual rather than digging deeper into potential metabolic or hormonal reasons one might be struggling with weight. I'm not saying that there are not folks who perhaps need to address their mindsets when it comes to health and long-term weight loss, but for people like myself and I am sure many of you, this is garbage. A year ago I would have read this and internalized that I was failing myself, regardless of my accomplishments or wins or all the work I have put in, the scale wasn't budging because I was ultimately the problem. I would have been driven deeper into self loathing and a failure mindset rather than considering something else is working against me. Having this surgery has meant so much more for me than watching the numbers go down on the scale. It was a metabolic and hormonal reset. It WAS a mental reset for me. I had done tremendous amounts of work towards self improvement prior to making this decision. I feel better than I have in years, every cell of my body is alive. That alone is reason enough for me to have had the surgery. I wish you all the mental and emotional clarity to rise above these messages. Sent from my Pixel 3a using BariatricPal mobile app

Onederland! And a general question :)
KellyMarie8288 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I hit Onederland this morning for the first time in 4 years! Woohoo! I will be 4 weeks PO tomorrow. HW 235 SW 216 CW 199.6 5'3" 39y/o F I have had a fantastic 4 weeks, I've lost 16.2 lbs in this time. I've had a significant slowdown in rate of loss and even a few stalls during this time. I'm currently averaging about 2-2.5lbs of loss per week. This is fantastic to me, considering at my best pre-op I was luck to lose .5lb a week. My question is, during the 'honeymoon' period, is it reasonable to expect to maintain this average rate of loss for a while? I'm certainly not expecting a 16lb loss every month moving forward (and not sure I would even want that) but I'm just curious once I am out of the immediate 'post op healing phase' is 8-10lbs a month reasonable. This! I get you 100%. I too struggled with PCOS since my early 20's. I was able to somewhat manage the weight, but ultimately gained 50lbs over 10 years. I was able to lose weight for occasions but only by ridiculous elimination diets and exercise. My body was very efficient at gaining and fought me every step of the way to lose. In my early 30's I lost my thyroid to thyroid cancer. I gained another 50lbs over 3 years despite constantly dieting and monitoring my intake. I often said over the years I could tell when my metabolism was working, usually just for a few days. I just felt better. After my thyroid was removed it was a hard stop. Nothing I did mattered. My Endo started my on a combo therapy of thyroid medication after determining I had 'post-thyroidectomy hypothyroidism' (despite my labs showing as slightly hyperthyroid). With the combo therapy I was able to lose 19.2 lbs over the 8 months prior to my VSG. Within 4 days of surgery I felt my metabolism kick back on and it's been going full blast ever since. Hello! I'm almost 3 weeks post-op. My surgeon's diet plan went from 2 weeks full liquids right to soft foods (and introducing any new foods at my comfort level). Things have been going well in this stage. I'm weighing my portions, taking my 30 minutes to eat, chewing to applesauce consistency, waiting between bites, no fluids before/during/after meals. However, I often find that after I finish my meal (I do not finish my full portion) I'm left with the feeling of my food sitting in my throat. Just like it's pooled there waiting for it's turn to go into my pouch. It generally passes within 20 minutes or so, but I am wondering if this means I am eating too much . I am not experiencing any pain, but it is kind of gross feeling, lol. I haven't had any incidents with stuck food, vomiting, or foamies. Just this food in my throat. Bile reflux?
KellyMarie8288 replied to KellyMarie8288's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had VSG. The episode I had was similar to GERD and for now my surgeon's office is treating it as such, except I was coughing up bile. I hadn't realized but within hours of my surgery I had coughed it up also, but assumed it was something related to the surgery. The taste is unmistakable and this time I had visual confirmation. I plan on discussing it at length at my post op on Monday. Other than this incident I feel incredible. Sent from my Pixel 3a using BariatricPal mobile app -
GERD before gastric sleeve
KellyMarie8288 replied to Circus321's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi. I was told I had GERD before surgery. It rarely bothered me so it wasn't something I had been actively treating. I maybe had episodes once or twice a year. Anyway, I am currently 9 days post op and had an unexpected episode two nights ago. So crazy because I have been on a liquid diet. I spoke with my surgeon's office and they advised me to take omeprazole every other night and sleep a little elevated. I am under the impression that this is normal and likely short term. Honestly, even if it ends up something I have to actively manage long term I feel like it's absolutely worth it because of how amazing I feel right now. We never know for sure how our bodies will react to these things, but it's about balancing the risks and benefits of our decision. Best of luck! Sent from my Pixel 3a using BariatricPal mobile app -
6 days post op.... HELP
KellyMarie8288 replied to spebbles711's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I second the fairlife suggestion. I'm 8 days post-op and the fairlife is much thinner and easier to swallow. Plus it isn't as overwhelmingly sweet like premier protein. Sent from my Pixel 3a using BariatricPal mobile app -
Hi. I'm one week out. Doing good hitting protein/hydration. I fell well and am in good spirits. I'm doing my sips. I'm allowed yogurt/pudding on my liquid diet right now but I seriously get pain from it. Even the smallest amounts liquified in my mouth cause pain almost right after swallowing. I've even tried watering down yogurt with almond milk. I also noticed that with the premier protein shakes I have to let the sips almost run down my throat rather than swallowing but not the fairlife, those I can actually swallow because the consistency is different. Really only water and Gatorade have been going down without much pain. Anyway, I am not sure if I had a hernia repair yet (haven't been able to ask yet), but wondering if that is what is causing it? If not is this something that improves over time? Thanks! Sent from my Pixel 3a using BariatricPal mobile app

Am I ruining my sleeve already???
KellyMarie8288 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hello, I'm 4DPO. I'm feeling pretty good. Today I almost felt normal. I have noticed that it's getting easier to drink. I still have some pain after swallowing, but no where near as much as I did on day 1 & 2. I know it wasn't supposed to hurt forever, but have I stretched my pouch already? On liquids? I'm hitting my minimum protein/water goals with little struggle. Is it always going to be this way? I'm stressed out when I start on solids it's going to ruin it and be all for nothing. Hello. I'm getting sleeved tomorrow. I've read about body dysmorphia post-op, but wondering if anyone has had this before surgery. I wasn't always heavy, but put on about 100lbs over the last 15 years. However in my head I'm still the 120lb person I was. Don't get me wrong, I am aware of health issues, emotional stress, and physical and mental limitations that my larger size has imposed on me, but in my skin I think I am still the same. I occasionally will catch a view of myself in a mirror and be shocked by what I see and my denial kicks into overdrive. Is this a thing with anyone else? What happened to your self image post-op? Thank you all! Sent from my Pixel 3a using BariatricPal mobile app

Blessed with a sensitive stomach
KellyMarie8288 posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hiya. Surgery is happening tomorrow morning. Something hadn't previously considered, but has entered my mind is my now stomach issues. My current stomach is sensitive to say the least. Basically, I'm a puker, lol. Not bulimic by any means, but I have weak stomach. I get norovirus easily, vitamins, antibiotics and narcotic pain relievers will generally cause me to vomit when taken on an empty stomach. I get nauseous easily. I can't even take NSAIDS because they cause severe gastritis (I'm not looking to be able to take them post-op, but just stating as an example). I've lived with it my entire life, but curious how VSG could change it. Has anyone had a sensitive stomach and it be reversed post-op? Stay the same? Worsen? Things I won't miss about being fat!
KellyMarie8288 replied to ChubRub's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I won't miss a fanny pack not fitting around my waist and then trying to wear it as a sling and it not fitting that way either. I know it's oddly specific, but it bothered the hell out of me! Sent from my Pixel 3a using BariatricPal mobile app -
Hi all. I just discovered this app and want to say hello. I'm going in on Wednesday morning for VSG. I am not on any specific pre-op diet, but instructed not to gain/overindulge. I'm going to Dr. Atkinson in Las Vegas. I'm a little in shock this is happening in less than 48 hours, but feel as ready as I will ever be. I started the process at the end of May, was supposed to go September/October but was ultimately scheduled for 11/23 because of delays at my PCP. My daughter tested positive for Covid on 11/12, which sent me into quarantine until 11/27. After my negative test and some updated labwork I am back on for 12/23. So it's been a process to say the least. I wish everyone a easy and meaningful journey to the 'losers bench' and look forward to seeing you on the other side.
