I had some underlying medical stuff going on so I am sure a pounds (5 or more) were just long term fluid built up. I had a hysterectomy a few years ago that was a complete nightmare and my hormones have been off the hook ever since. The surgeon told me today that my stomach that was sent in to pathology was nightmare. I should feel better just having that out of me, I had/ have, will have (still trying to figure this out) an autoimmune disorder of the stomach lining (autoimmune atrophic gastritis). So hopefully getting that diseased tissue out of me and getting my vitamins and electrolytes back in balance the rest of the numbers will fall back in place again. I got so depressed when nobody could figure out what was wrong with me all I did was eat and that just made everything ten times worse! I am so grateful that they were willing to go this procedure on me and give me a life back I am willing to do anything to start living again. Now to get my husband through the liquid phase of everything so he can lose all the weight we gained together !!!!

LOOKING FOR RECCOMENDATIONS FOR LOW-CARB/LOW SUGAR/LOW FAT/HIGH PROTEIN BARS
Betty1971 replied to TheMoxieMama's topic in Food and Nutrition
I have to laugh because I bough a whole bunch of different kinds of protein bars so that the day comes when I can have something crunchy I can go to the cabinet and pick one out and my hubby comes in my office the other day and said he could go to the field and bring me in an alfalfa bale to chew on and it would cost less and more than likely taste better......LOL I haven't tried any of them yet to have a favorite. I guess I don't have to worry about him getting into them before I can eat them. -
Which surgery did you have done? I am only two weeks post gastric sleeve and my diet has been limited but I would certainly suggest speaking to your surgeon or dietitian. So many protein options besides meat out there but bread is the one thing that I would think would be detrimental to your weight and your insides.........Dont give up, keep asking questions until you get answers.

I am going to invest in a good scale that will not be used to make deer sausage! Anyone have any recommendations. I am liking the reviews on the Omron Scale and body composition monitor but all I have ever really used is the good old fashioned Walmart scale, I don't know if all the bells and whistles will be used or not. My hubby is set for surgery on the 28th and he and I are really trying our old college best to give this whole fitness and nutrition the best of us and I am not afraid of spending a little money on quality if it adds to the end benefit but if it is just going to sit in the closet in the box because us old farts have to have the kids come home to weigh us once a year that really will not do us any good either?

I went to my consultation hard headed and wanting the bypass and the surgeon was just as hard headed and wisely said the sleeve because of my previous bouts of diverticulitis and previous bowel resections. I wanted the "whole deal" I wanted to be all in and now I am super happy with the sleeve and realized I should have understood that the Dr probably has his reasons for his recommendations and I am just an armchair Dr. Tell your Dr your reasonings for your choices and listen to his reasonings for his choices and spend some time researching both......remember that procedures are not what they used to be yesterday and both have really good results.

Severe allergic reation
Betty1971 replied to LoreCar's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would do what the Dr says but if you want to try something at home that has worked for contact dermatitis around our house before that.....take a chamomile tea bag that is saturated in Luke warm water and put them on your areas that affected. My daughter was allergic to almost everything as a toddler and this was about the only thing that ever gave her any relief. Again I would make sure the wounds are not open and do what the Dr tells you but this is something that can provide a little relief in between or while you are waiting to get into see the Dr. -

what are you having the reaction to? -
First and foremost I don't want to get all grandma like on ya but it makes you kinda get a little teary eyed. What a story to tell the little one.....talk about determination!!!!! I don't know what your position in life is about having a baby right now but something in this universe says NOW is the time if a pregnancy can get through all those hoops and still come out OK!! It may complicate weight loss and muddy up the nutritional water a bit but by golly a baby is a pretty amazing reason to slow down the weight loss......you can still get healthy during a pregnancy!!!!

I just told my hubby I wish Willy Wonka would have made a low carb high protein all day chew that had a Pizza changing to Big Mac changing to cheese cake hard candy!!!! LOL. My mouth just wants to chew some real food!!!! I see the Dr tomorrow for my two week check up and praying for regular food in a blender because I am tired of drinking my meals I think as adult humans we just desire chewing our food. Remember pop rocks as a kid and the anticipation of the snap and pop in your mouth, there is just something about the feel of the food as well as the taste.

I use the app baritastic to log my food. I really like it because you can just scan the label and it logs all the nutritional info and logs it for you as well. It also is an easy place to keep track of my water and any other note and it has a reminder to set for my supplements and medications. So many cool tracking devices out there it really is just finding the one that works for your lifestyle!! good luck

I am only in week two but have read a lot about the stalls thats are ahead. There are so many things that can change just a couple of pounds that as long as your seeing a downward trend I wouldn't get discouraged. I mean lets get real here, a good poop and pee can be a pound or two?? I would just keep plugging away and maybe next Sunday you will get on here and tell us about your 7 pound drop!!! Chin up partner it did not come on over night so it wont fall off over night, it is not a race.

Oh boy it only took two weeks. I knew it was coming eventually but I thought it would be at least two months out. So here comes my dirty laundry and secrets: I have a serious problem with control. I like to be in control of everything in my life. When I am not in control of something I tend to control something else even more. So, when my eating addiction was out of control my OCD with my house was crazy. My junk drawers are alphabetized. I knew after surgery I would be able to get in control of my appetite and I would start finding routine in my eating and structure in exercise and so forth. This is a good thing.....but.....my hubby had a serious talk ( me and he also plans on having WLS he is very supportive and I know he is only looking out for the best of me but its going to drive me insane). He feels that I am obsessing on what goes in too much and being too restrictive. He looked at my food log (I have no problem with him looking at anything on my phone ) and he about flipped out when he seen over the last 14 days I have had only about 500 calories a day. I know this is low but it is also my first 2 weeks post op, I have had 65 plus gram of protein and 90 plus ounces of water. I see the dr and dietitian on Monday and he goes to my appointments with me, I am sure I am not the first person to enjoy the no Hungers after weight loss and by golly I certainly am not going to blow away yet.......I am also aware that I cannot live forever on 500 calories a day. So here is my question and I will ask the dietitian on Monday in front of my hubby so he hears it from the professionals: What is your calorie intake that you feel comfortable to lose weight at? protein and carb numbers as well what is your calorie intake that you feel comfortable to maintain at? protein and carb numbers as well

The serious conversation "oh snap"
Betty1971 replied to Betty1971's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I really feel great. I have had no pain at all. I drink a protein shake in the morning and evening and at lunchtime I drink a bone broth. I have no problem getting my fluids in. I am taking advantage of the no appetite !! I am hoping that when I see the surgeon he gives me the go ahead to start exercising. With this stupid COVID crap all the gyms are closed but we have a treadmill and rowing machine so I am hoping to be able to start up with some time on them. We both come from a family with deep addiction issues and by the grace of God we have been able to stay clear of the drug and ETOH but he has been afraid from the start that the surgery will be the start of an eating disorder for me. We have a daughter who struggles with bulimia and has since she was a teenager. I have always blamed her eating disorder on me being big and all that kind of bad parenting stuff but all we can do now is do what we can do to be healthy going forward. -
did your surgeon give you an anti nausea medication to take? Zofran is super effective for nausea after surgery.

Slippers,Mittens and other strange changes
Betty1971 replied to Betty1971's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I am from North Dakota and have been over weight my entire life. I was a chubby (but adorable) toddler! We are having a super nice winter here not a flake of snow on the ground and not enough ice on the lakes to ice fish but my husband (who is also over weight) is ready to start sleeping in one of the spare bedrooms due to the temp changes I am going through. Last night I had the fire place in the bed room rolling, the furnace set on 73 and an electric blanket on high.....If I could figure out a way to sleep in the bathtub I would. I tried to put my feet under my hubby's legs last night and you would have thought I dumped a cold tub of gatorade on him......I will not be doing that again any time soon. I am guessing he gets me some thick wool socks for Christmas or separate beds.....LOL -
Holy cats talk about some changes I did not see coming. I am normally always overheating, I am hot at night and kick off the covers, want the windows open in the winter time while I clean house, I sweat just thinking about changing clothes. Two weeks post sleeve and my husband wants to know what they did with his wife, you see, I have the furnace set on 73 and the fire place rolling in the living room. I actually put an electric blanket on my bed and today while I was bee booping around the house I was wearing socks and slippers and I had on a pair of mittens because my hands were so darn cold. My dog has decided he no longer wants to sleep under the covers next to me, he stares at me like I am an alien. I used to love Dasani water and today I decided it tastes like chemicals and the generic spring water we use in our Keurig machine tastes better??

Tips for Shoulder Pain
Betty1971 replied to mcczac's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I am only a couple weeks into this so I am by not much of a specialist but I worked as a LPN for 12 years and I can tell you what that experience taught me.....walk walk walk walk and move move move. The more you move and the more walking you do the more you move and absorb that gas and the less pain you have. After surgery it may be uncomfortable but the best thing you can do is when you get up is stand up and straighten up and walk. The first time it will hurt, the second time it will be uncomfortable and then it gets easier but it will make your recovery time so much shorter and less painful in the long run. I just want to walk up to people and give them a talking to when I see them walk in the hall way all scrunched up after surgery and have a heart to heart with them about the importance of walking out that gas with good posture but it obviously isn't my place ....lol if your shoulders are sore and you feel the pressure under your breast or in your shoulder blades, lift up your arms and stretch them out as best you can and take deep breaths. The human body is an amazing thing and will absorb a lot of that gas and work out a great deal more if you give it the opportunity to. By day three or four you really don't have to worry about ripping out anything internal, just lift up your arms slowly and take deep breaths by the end of the day they will work themselves out. -
Natural shedding takes place as well as the stress of surgery and all that so it is expected. Just a few things you can do to try to keep your scalp and hair you are keeping as healthy as possible. Brush your scalp super good without tearing on your hair, it increases circulation. Find an oil treatment and do it weekly, focus on your scalp and the ends of your hair. Do not over wash your hair, if you are using a good shampoo and condition without waxes and such you should only have to wash your hair twice a week. I am a hair snob and will spend the money on a oil treatment that works well with me. I went through some medical crap 5 years ago and lost a lot of hair, I have found a program that works well with me and I am going to do my best not to go through what we went through last time I can give you some good oil treatments and programs that are not medicated or anything just clean products that are good for scalp and hair health.

Betty1971 replied to Mr Alley Gator's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
First Thanksgiving home was definitely a different one. I mean come on, nothing about 2020 is even a little bit normal ! I was only 2 days post surgery and thought I would sleep the day away but not the case at all! I got up and made my hubby a chicken with all the fixings including pumpkin pie. I had no desire to even taste the gravy but the thought of a pumpkin pie liquid something did cross my mind! Today is a week out and I do not even find myself thinking about food. I have a reminder set on my phone so I get my water and protein drinks in ..... -
Trouble eating/drinking enough?
Betty1971 replied to Shadow07's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am also about a week out post op. I have found beef broth, chicken broth are soothing to my system and are fluid. And my hubby just brought me both beef and chicken bone broth, a little different twist on a regular broth and it took me a tad to get used to it but its super high in protein and counts as fluid. I have truly tried about every protein drink, shake and powder out there and find the Fairlife core power protein drinks actually tasty!! I figure since I stopping drinking Diet Coke its only right that its a coke company that get my cash -
I had my sleeve done the 24th of November. It has been good so far, minor odd things I didn't prepare for but no pain, and minimal nausea! If you are used to being busy and have a few weeks to recover I would advise to have a hobby ready! I have tons of energy and want to do so many around the house projects but stop myself by reminding my brain that although I feel great I did just have major surgery and my body will not be happy if I decide to clean my cabinets. Invest in a kindle and find some good books, find a craft and hide the credit cards if you like to shop online!!! and remember to sip, sip sip that water

Thanks everyone. The sleeping thing is getting better, I just stay up later and get up earlier, not a bad thing at all in the big scheme of things. I think it is mainly from not doing much physically, I am a farm woman so I am used to being outside doing something most everyday with the hubs and now I am a house flower! Smells are still a bit overwhelming but I am just learning how to breathe through the rough spots. Still no pain so super happy, I am moving on to phase 2 of food today and not really expecting any bumps. Enjoy the weekend and thanks for the input!!!

Oh my gosh. So many things that all those appointments before surgery never touched on!!! I had surgery on Monday (Nov 24th) came home Tuesday. I am a pretty tough cookie but I haven't had any real pain?? Is that normal??? Smells are overwhelming and make me a little nauseous, doing dishes isn't physically demanding but the smells are hard ??? I love to sleep, sleeping was my favorite hobby now I am like a bunny on crack!! I lay in bed at night at have tried the sound machines, dark room, a little sleepy tea but if I sleep 5 hours a night its a lot???? Its just my husband and I (and the dog) at home and I we farm, I have all winter off and planned on recovery being a bugger and now I am thinking I must be in a honeymoon stage or something, is this going to crash and I'm going to be miserable??? I am not taking any pain medication, just my cocktail of bariatric vitamins, protonics and zofran if needed. Any advice would be awesome.
