LaoDaBeirut got a reaction from GreenTealael in Dr saying not to drink protein shakes!
So I think this might be a cultural difference. I'm also in the Middle East and the dietician told me I don't need Protein Shakes. Americans seem all about them. She didn't mention the heart palpitations but she just said they're not really healthy and have a lot of additives.
I haven't had any shakes post-surgery. For the first couple weeks I had a lot of milk, juice, and yogurt. In the pureed stage I had all kinds hummus, baba ghanoush, lentil Soup, mashed potatoes with nutritional yeast on top, more yogurt, soft cheeses, and fish. Now I've added in some other things.
I get between 80 and 100g of Protein a day and don't use the shakes. You can do it!

I've struggled with extremely painful and long, heavy periods for years and doctors never seem to pay attention to it. I have a medical condition where my testosterone is far higher than an average woman (not PCOS but sort of similar). I have tried EVERYTHING in order to treat this and been to so many doctors. I learned taking evening primrose oil everyday helps as it's supposed to help regulate hormones. Also, up your magnesium. I have no idea if it exists in the USA but in the Middle East there is this powdered drink called Biolectra Sport infused with magnesium and it helps me tremendously and I drink it every night. I also take Buscopan for when the pain gets really bad.
I know your issue isn't pain as much as length of periods but maybe this can help.

My daily intake is 1200, based on advice from the dietitican and doctor. I would follow it.

I'm 6 weeks out and am eating apples, mangoes, all kinds of berries, kiwis, and bananas. I haven't had any issues. These are allowed on my plan though so it's possible it's different for other people.

LaoDaBeirut got a reaction from jennlynn69 in Surgery for someone with no health issues
    Hi everyone!
I'm strongly considering gastric bypass and have done consultations with 3 surgeons. One told me I qualified for the surgery and approved me and suggested the bypass. Another said surgery was an option and recommended the sleeve. The third said that medically I could qualify but he didn't recommend surgery for me as other than obesity I have no other co-morbidities.
I'm 36, female, 6'1, 410 pounds. My BMI is 54 and has been around this high for at least a decade. I'm one of those "lucky" fat people who don't store fat close to internal organs and so I haven't developed significant health issues. My BP is normal, no diabetes, heart disease high cholesterol, etc. I've managed to have a pretty active lifestyle despite my weight and have been a competitive powerlifter for years.
I want to get the surgery because I'm aware that just because I'm "healthy" now that doesn't mean I will be 5 or 10 years from now. I would also like to do things like fit into airplane seats with ease and not worry about whether I will fit into a chair or break a bed frame. I want to be able to go skydiving and bungee jumping and things I've never been able to do as a big person. I've tried to lose weight before and always gained back whatever I lose.
Has anyone been in a similar position? I was honestly quite surprised by the reaction I got as doctors have been telling me to lose weight for years. Now when I say I do want to do that it's like well maybe don't lose weight this way. My gut feeling is to go forward with the surgery anyway as I want to lose weight for my own reasons but I would love to hear from anyone who has been in a similar situation.

At the puree stage I was allowed to have grilled or poached fish, which is really high in Protein. I also ate a lot of ethiopian food without the injera. That plus greek yogurt, baba ghanoush, hummas, and labneh were my protein sources. I didn't drink shakes.

Hi Dubai people! I'm also in Dubai right now. Headed back to Beirut in a few weeks. I also consumed a lot of lentil Soup in the past month. Really Lebanese food is ideal for the recovery period because there are lots of mushy healthy things.

LaoDaBeirut got a reaction from sach1 in I'm doing something wrong
I'm 5 weeks out and averaging 900-1000 calories a day. I'm supposed to hit 1200 but I'm finding that hard and so building up to it.
I see a lot of people eating way less than I am, even years out. People have different needs-perhaps that is working best for them. If you've been prescribed a higher calorie plan then follow it.
I asked my dietician a lot about this because in order to get 1200 calories I need to eat 3 meals and 6 Snacks a day. That sounded crazy to me and way too much compared to what everyone else is eating. I basically eat all day long. She explained that it's imperative for me to stay at a higher calorie level because I have a very high muscle mass from years of powerlifting (and the tests she did confirmed that was the case). A very low calorie count for months would just make me lose my muscle mass instead of fat. It also wouldn't leave me any energy to work out and I hit the gym pretty hard. I'm also supposed to eat carbs and I know other people were told not to.
Basically my point is there is nothing wrong with eating more calories than some other people. There is probably a reason you are supposed to do that. Even if we all had the same surgery our bodies have different needs.

As soon as I posted I was stalled I broke through it and went down 4 lbs in one day.
My dietician has me on a 1200 calorie a day plan and I was never able to eat that much. Finally yesterday I just forced myself to eat everything I was supposed to and just slowly ate all day. Stall broken. The problem is if I need to eat this much I can't do anything all day but eat.

I lost 9 kilos the first 2 weeks then been stalled since. I know this is part of the process but it is bizarre that I'm eating so little yet not losing weight. I had my one month follow up from the surgeon though and I'm cleared to lift weights so woooo.

LaoDaBeirut got a reaction from AZhiker in No more PMS symptoms
    Hey ladies,
I discovered a really wonderful and unexpected side effect of surgery. I used to get horrific PMS cramps. The entire week before my period was me using machines, pain killers, hot baths, heating pads-anything and everything to stop the pain. I saw dozens of doctors and they all didn't know what to do. Sometimes it would be so bad I would be feverish and couldn't even go to work.
Post surgery this stopped. I now get very minor pain that a painkiller can stop. If I had known that bariatric surgery could stop this I would have done the surgery years ago.
I'm just wondering if anyone else experienced this?

I'm not sure you will need to bring much. You will sleep a lot after the surgery from anesthesia. I brought books and was too tired to read them.

LaoDaBeirut got a reaction from AZhiker in Tofu..
I lived in China and I ate so much tofu my friends called me "Queen of Tofu." Tofu is delicious if cooked and seasoned correctly and disgusting if it's not.
I really suggest going to an authentic Thai, Chinese, or Korean restaurant and trying a tofu dish before cooking it yourself. If you have a Chinese hotpot restaurant in your town go there. Ideally find a place with tofu noodles which are tofu strips cut into the shape of noodles. They're delicious.
Otherwise if cooking it yourself make sure you buy extra firm tofu and drain the tofu before cooking it. An easy way to do that is to cut into small squares and then wrap paper towels around it to drain the excess Water. If you find the texture gross then it's probably how you cooked it rather than the tofu.
