  1. Hi everyone! I'm strongly considering gastric bypass and have done consultations with 3 surgeons. One told me I qualified for the surgery and approved me and suggested the bypass. Another said surgery was an option and recommended the sleeve. The third said that medically I could qualify but he didn't recommend surgery for me as other than obesity I have no other co-morbidities. I'm 36, female, 6'1, 410 pounds. My BMI is 54 and has been around this high for at least a decade. I'm one of those "lucky" fat people who don't store fat close to internal organs and so I haven't developed significant health issues. My BP is normal, no diabetes, heart disease high cholesterol, etc. I've managed to have a pretty active lifestyle despite my weight and have been a competitive powerlifter for years. I want to get the surgery because I'm aware that just because I'm "healthy" now that doesn't mean I will be 5 or 10 years from now. I would also like to do things like fit into airplane seats with ease and not worry about whether I will fit into a chair or break a bed frame. I want to be able to go skydiving and bungee jumping and things I've never been able to do as a big person. I've tried to lose weight before and always gained back whatever I lose. Has anyone been in a similar position? I was honestly quite surprised by the reaction I got as doctors have been telling me to lose weight for years. Now when I say I do want to do that it's like well maybe don't lose weight this way. My gut feeling is to go forward with the surgery anyway as I want to lose weight for my own reasons but I would love to hear from anyone who has been in a similar situation.

    Protein Problems in Purée Stage

I had shiro wot and then a few vegetable dishes. I didn't try the meat options yet. I've had no problems with the spices but I'm also a person who LOVES spicy food. Really for me it's been the ideal puree food.

    Hullo from Dubai // Intro

Hi Dubai people! I'm also in Dubai right now. Headed back to Beirut in a few weeks. I also consumed a lot of lentil soup in the past month. Really Lebanese food is ideal for the recovery period because there are lots of mushy healthy things.

    Protein Problems in Purée Stage

At the puree stage I was allowed to have grilled or poached fish, which is really high in protein. I also ate a lot of ethiopian food without the injera. That plus greek yogurt, baba ghanoush, hummas, and labneh were my protein sources. I didn't drink shakes.

    Returning to work?

I'm a professor and my job is virtual now. I did my surgery right before winter break. I had no complications from surgery and an easy recovery. However, I'm glad I had a long break from work. In the first couple weeks of recovery I definitely had a brain fog. I felt fine physically but my brain didn't feel like it was as fast as usual. I think lecturing would have been difficult and if a student asked me a tough question I probably would have flubbed it. I say do it in the summer. Teaching requires so much of your mental focus that even if you physically recover, it's tough if your brain isn't ready yet. Another thing is you will have to eat very small amounts throughout the day and in the first few weeks you might be slowly sipping water or a protein shake for hours. This is tough to do when teaching.

    I'm doing something wrong

I'm 5 weeks out and averaging 900-1000 calories a day. I'm supposed to hit 1200 but I'm finding that hard and so building up to it. I see a lot of people eating way less than I am, even years out. People have different needs-perhaps that is working best for them. If you've been prescribed a higher calorie plan then follow it. I asked my dietician a lot about this because in order to get 1200 calories I need to eat 3 meals and 6 snacks a day. That sounded crazy to me and way too much compared to what everyone else is eating. I basically eat all day long. She explained that it's imperative for me to stay at a higher calorie level because I have a very high muscle mass from years of powerlifting (and the tests she did confirmed that was the case). A very low calorie count for months would just make me lose my muscle mass instead of fat. It also wouldn't leave me any energy to work out and I hit the gym pretty hard. I'm also supposed to eat carbs and I know other people were told not to. Basically my point is there is nothing wrong with eating more calories than some other people. There is probably a reason you are supposed to do that. Even if we all had the same surgery our bodies have different needs.

    No Support from Husband

I'm really sorry to hear this. To be honest this really doesn't sound healthy and possibly abusive. Do you have anyone else you can stay with? Do the surgery for YOU. You deserve to live a happy and healthy, long life.

    Still a virgin at 46

Are you putting forth the best version of you? Like are dressing well? I suggest taking new pictures and really try to look your best. Also women on dating sites have tons of opportunities so don't feel bad if they disappear. Usually the attention is overwhelming.

    November 2020 sleevers

As soon as I posted I was stalled I broke through it and went down 4 lbs in one day. My dietician has me on a 1200 calorie a day plan and I was never able to eat that much. Finally yesterday I just forced myself to eat everything I was supposed to and just slowly ate all day. Stall broken. The problem is if I need to eat this much I can't do anything all day but eat.

    November 2020 sleevers

I lost 9 kilos the first 2 weeks then been stalled since. I know this is part of the process but it is bizarre that I'm eating so little yet not losing weight. I had my one month follow up from the surgeon though and I'm cleared to lift weights so woooo.

    Weight Gain A Week In?

I've been eating mashed potatoes a lot but I top them with nutritional yeast. They're on my diet plan from my nutritionist.

    No more PMS symptoms

Hey ladies, I discovered a really wonderful and unexpected side effect of surgery. I used to get horrific PMS cramps. The entire week before my period was me using machines, pain killers, hot baths, heating pads-anything and everything to stop the pain. I saw dozens of doctors and they all didn't know what to do. Sometimes it would be so bad I would be feverish and couldn't even go to work. Post surgery this stopped. I now get very minor pain that a painkiller can stop. If I had known that bariatric surgery could stop this I would have done the surgery years ago. I'm just wondering if anyone else experienced this?

1 Day Post Op - Vomiting Bad

I vomited all day the day after surgery and then have felt fine since then. Don't worry this will pass!

    800 calorie

My prescribed diet is almost the same. I still can't get it all in but I am feeling way better with more energy as I'm eating more. I definitely couldn't sustain myself on 300 or 400 calories as other people are doing. The dietician did tell me that I'm on an eating plan more often used for men than for women though because I'm crazy tall and as a powerlifter I have a very high muscle mass so I don't think I'm getting the same info as some others.

Surgery for someone with no health issues

I had my surgery 3 weeks ago. I'm not in the USA so the process moves much faster here. So far I'm doing just fine and happy I did it!

    800 calorie

Mine is the same. After 2 weeks I was put on a 1,200 calorie a day diet. I'm supposed to have 3 meals and 6 snacks a day. I can't quite get there but doing better everyday. Luckily I work from home so I can just eat super slowly all day.

    Hospital stay

I'm not sure you will need to bring much. You will sleep a lot after the surgery from anesthesia. I brought books and was too tired to read them.

    Tofu..

I lived in China and I ate so much tofu my friends called me "Queen of Tofu." Tofu is delicious if cooked and seasoned correctly and disgusting if it's not. I really suggest going to an authentic Thai, Chinese, or Korean restaurant and trying a tofu dish before cooking it yourself. If you have a Chinese hotpot restaurant in your town go there. Ideally find a place with tofu noodles which are tofu strips cut into the shape of noodles. They're delicious. Otherwise if cooking it yourself make sure you buy extra firm tofu and drain the tofu before cooking it. An easy way to do that is to cut into small squares and then wrap paper towels around it to drain the excess water. If you find the texture gross then it's probably how you cooked it rather than the tofu.

    November 2020 sleevers

I'm in a similar position and having no trouble with the liquids I'm supposed to be having. I'm on a 600 calorie full liquid diet for 2 weeks then transition to puree. I'm not too worried I'm consuming more calories than some others. I'm going to lose weight whether I eat 300 or 600 calories a day they both cause a massive deficit.

    Why is this happening???

I'm also experiencing this. It's like everything I taste has more flavor. Like I thought chicken broth was delicious yesterday. This is kind of a cool side effect.

Undecided - Newbie - figuring my way around

I just wanted to say I'm happy to see another Dubai person here. I did my surgery in Beirut and relocated here during covid because my boyfriend is here, but my job is in the UAE and I've been there many years.

    November 2020 sleevers

I had my sleeve on 11/30. All went well and on surgery day I felt great with no pain. Then the next day I vomited all day long. I also had a problem where my IV came out and it took a surgical team to get it back in. Now I'm doing much better. No pain and I am doing fine with liquids. I haven't lost a single pound yet but I'm assuming that will change soon.

    Clothes during Weight Loss

Eloquii (my favorite plus size store) has a rental option where for a fee you can rent a certain amount of clothes per month, return it and get the next batch. Perfect for weight loss because each month you can just switch to a lower size if you need.
