Senior woman -gastric sleeve
Nonnie68 replied to Jonni's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Jonni, I am 68, also retired, and just beginning this journey, too. I am on Medicare, and must go through several months of different types of counseling prior to receiving a surgery date. Like Elidh, I realized I wanted to improve my health to enjoy those retirement years. Some days I think about the foods I will eliminating from my diet; and then I realize, it's the very foods that have lead me to this point of overweight-ness, and which is more important to me - those foods OR my health, for heavens sake?!? Good luck with your procedure; look forward to following your positive progress! -

Can you share your grandma's recipes for the veggie soups? Would love to know, since that helped you get past the broths. -
That's great news!! And I sure hope you're feeling better!

I sure hope tomorrow finds you feeling better! And that it doesn't delay your surgery.

Wow, that's interesting, too! My colectomy was done in 2015, and I wasn't given a list of no-no foods. I occasionally have popcorn now, but I can give it up if it's a no-no after surgery. I am looking forward to sessions with the nutritionist to see what things I can or cannot eat.

Thank you for your post, Betty1971! I have had a colectomy due to diverticulitis, removed about 13 or 14 inches of bowel, and I wondered how my surgeon would determine which procedure would work best. I have only had my first meeting with her thus far, and have an endoscopy and colonoscopy scheduled for January 7th. I think that I recall from our appointment that she said the sleeve wouldn't involve the intestines, whereas the bypass would. I need to clarify that with her. Unfortunately, I also have a sliding hiatal hernia that needs repair, and a very large incisional hernia in my lower abdomen from the colectomy that needs repair - which the first surgeon I saw wouldn't do until I lost weight. It's like a vicious circle to find out how to approach everything.😣 Your post relieved some of my anxieties about this! I have read post after post to see if anyone has had a similar situation. So thank you!

Thank you so much for your encouraging response! I am feeling hopeful, and really, really hoping that Medicare will cover it. I think that the loss of weight would improve my mobility a lot. Thanks again!

At the suggestion of my PCP, I am considering WLS. In 2005, I had lap band surgery. In 2015, I had a colectomy due to diverticulitis and bowel microperforations, and the lap band was removed when the colectomy was done. NOW, I have a very large incisional hernia in my abdomen from the colectomy surgery, and a hiatal hernia, both of which need to be repaired. The first surgeon I saw would not operate until I lost weight; my BMI is around 40-41. I am also older than many people posting here (68 on Medicare). So my PCP has referred me to a WLS surgeon. Has anyone here had gastric bypass or sleeve after having had a colectomy? I have only had my initial telemedicine appointment, and am looking for comments from anyone with similar experiences. Appreciate your comments in advance! Thanks.
