How long to feel normal
mswillis5 replied to Mark P3's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My wife and I both had surgery on the same day and we took care of each other for pretty much the entire week. We didn't need anyone else to help us with mobility. We also were able to take care of each other, so I wouldn't worry about overexerting your wife during her pregnancy. -
Actually I saw this at Whole Foods and thought it wasn't a bad deal. It's $6.99 for two low carb crusts. Not sure that helps this situation with the delivery but thought I would offer it up as a potential option next time. Customer service is never what you expect it to be and sometimes is eye opening to determine if you are going to order from that company again. https://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/product/outer-aisle-gourmet-italian-cauliflower-pizza-crust-5-oz-b089z96t5t

Recommendation for Tucson doctors
mswillis5 replied to Happymouse13's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not sure if this would work for you or not but I live in Phoenix and had my Psych evaluation with Dr. Kevin Olin and they did it 100% online. It wouldn't hurt to call them and see as they should be able to do the same for you as mine was just done in October. The evaluation occurred during two days but wasn't very difficult and they just wanted to make sure that I didn't have any underlying conditions that were unresolved. I would recommend my other Doctors but they are all in Phoenix and most of them were in person. My BIL lives in Tucson but is traveling to WLIA in Tempe to have his operation. -
Is anyone allowed to have people with them in the hospital to get surgery ?
mswillis5 replied to marissaroth90's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I had had surgery last September and had to be dropped off and picked up with no visitors. I was actually a bit luckily though and my wife and I were both in adjoining room as we both had the surgery the same day. I know you will miss your husband but like others have said, use technology to it's fullest and you will sleep the majority of the time. I don't remember too much from the hospital other than they kept giving me IVs and I had to use the restroom every couple of hours. Good luck and you will do great. -
Setting a goal weight & Dr Comments
mswillis5 replied to amyseattle's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
My goal weight is 170 and I am going to get to it pretty easily since I am only 2 lbs away. My wife was 5 ft and her max weight was 280. The doctors first goal for her is 150 in under the first year and she is 198 right now at 5 months out. She really wants to her goal to be 120 and feels she can do that with lots of work. -

My wife had both Pfizer doses and the first dose she was itchy and had to take a benedryl and the second dose she didn't have any symptoms. No fever, tiredness or aches at all, just itchy with the first dose. -
Am I losing too fast after Gastric Sleeve?
mswillis5 replied to Shanibani's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My wife and I try to do 15-20 grams of protein per meal. Greek yogurt is 15-18 grams of protein (we would split this up at the beginning and only eat half in one sitting). Cheese wrap with deli meat is about 22 grams and we were able to eat about 2/3rds of it by our 3rd month. If you are using regular milk, take a look at Fairlife or Carbsmart milk. They are a bit more protein than the standard milks and less sugar. A Tuna or Chicken packet is 12-15g in just one packet and we could eat about 1/2 a packet at a time. We also found some high protein meals that we like. Taco skillet with lean beef, taco seasoning, peppers and onions and melted cheese on top. We know we were hitting at least 60 grams eating 3-4 times in a day this way when we ate 15-20 grams in one sitting. I know I have heard of others adding protein powder to their meal/yogurt to increase the protein content as well. -
Boyfriends Mom! WTF
mswillis5 replied to JustJazzy's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I told one of my coworkers and they said they knew someone who had surgery and lost the weight and gained all of it back. This was before my surgery and they asked if I really wanted to still do it. Even though they were not 100% on board with me at the beginning, they knew I wasn't doing this alone. (My wife and I had surgery the same day). I had to explain to her that it really is only a tool that helps with weight loss but that the mental aspect of eating has to change or you can gain the weight back. You are going to do great! I like to say that the more that we work towards this, the more we can show that WLS surgery really does help to save our lives. There are quite a few bad influences out there that don't believe it will work and I like to show them that I am not one of those statistics and that it can work. -
Am I losing too fast after Gastric Sleeve?
mswillis5 replied to Shanibani's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I go with your surgeon that you may be losing quickly but it seems to be similar to me and my wife. I was 260 during preop on October 27th and am only 172 today and that is over the last 140 days. If you average that over the time period, I have lost 0.63lbs every day since starting preop. The weight loss for me was around 1-2 lbs per day for the first 3 months or so and has started to slow down with plenty of stalls in between where I only lost 1 lb in a week. My wife has been similar in this weight loss with around 1 stall for 1 week every month. She was 274 during preop and is down to 198 today. You might be losing quickly but it seems to be inline with what my wife and I were able to achieve and we were a bit less weight than you were. -

Food Before and After Photos
mswillis5 replied to GreenTealael's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
These look amazing. Can you share the recipe for these? My wife would love to bake a few of these as well. -
My wife and I are officially in Onederland and I have lost 108 lbs so far during the last year (20 before surgery and 88 during preop until today). I have never posted a picture of myself here so here are a few pictures of when I was near my peak weight and a picture from last month. After the last picture my wife and other family made me go get clothes that actually fit. The shorts I wore to surgery were over 10" too large when I bought the new ones. I had to buy a couple of pair to get the correct sizing and the same with shirts. Since I wasn't able to try things on, I had to return some that were too large. When I have a chance, I will try to post a picture of my wife and her progress as well as she is not currently on this forum. In total, my wife and I have lost 188 lbs since our peak. She only has 20 lbs more before she has over 100 lbs lost as well and is well on her way towards her goal weight. October 2018 March 2019 November 11, 2020 - Surgery Day February 27th, 2021

Is your partner normal weight or heavy? How does this affect you?
mswillis5 replied to Creekimp13's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Before surgery, I was the one who caused my wife to have bad eating habits. I would always bring home donuts or ice cream or junk food. I have vastly improved with bringing junk foods home since my wife and I both had surgery and are definitely working on making much better food choices. I used to eat ice cream almost daily before surgery and it has very little appeal now after surgery. Editing to include my 11 year old daughter. My daughter is larger for her "defined" age based size. She was in the 94th percentile for height and 75th for weight at her annual check-up last month. Since we started not buying as much junk food, she has thinned out a bit and even her grandmother noticed that she was losing a bit of weight. She is also growing taller and is almost 5ft tall already, so that could explain a bit of this as well. We are not putting her on a diet but she is eating what we eat. Since we are eating healthier and don't have that much junk food in the house, I feel that this is going to improve her life for the better as well. -
I am not quite in maintenance but I am close to it. Since my weight loss is recent, I do have some loose skin but it is completely manageable and I feel it really depends on a lot of factors. I definitely wouldn't say zero loose skin but I feel like I could wear a swimsuit and no one would really notice but myself. My wife had surgery at the same time and we already know she is going to have a lot of loose skin when she hits maintenance weight. We are already saving up for plastic surgery for her when she is ready for it as she has wanted plastic surgery for a long time due to other factors.

You are down 60 lbs in 5 months. That is still over 12 lbs per month on average. All people lose weight at different rates and it sounds like you are still doing great!

I "snuck" having WLS
mswillis5 replied to chiquitatummy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My wife and I have been upfront with everyone so far. I have only told a few coworkers and my manager but they have almost all been fairly receptive. I know that my wife has had a few coworkers who she didn't even know had the surgery and were able to relate with her and give her advice. -
Making the surgery choice, which one?
mswillis5 replied to catlover12's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
My wife and I chose VSG because we didn't have excessive heart burn. We also have the ability to transition to RNY if an issue did occur. We also know that the recovery/complications from VSG are slightly less than RNY. You can find studies that RNY does result in slightly more weight loss than VSG does but since my wife and I are working together we are working with each other to get to maintenance weight. I am almost at maintenance weight already after having surgery on 11/11 last year and my wife is well on her way there too. -
My wife and I have developed a routine with laxative stool softeners. We take 2 to 3 of these pills per day at night depending on if we went the day before or not and we usually have success with these. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077Y84VX4?ref=rcxsubs_myd_ct_detail_page We typically have a movement daily but there are a few days in between them and the 3 pills the night before almost guarantees a movement in the morning.

My wife developed an autoimmune disease that reared it's head last year. One way to help reduce her symptoms was to lose weight. One month after being diagnosed we met with the surgeon and 2 months after that we both had surgery. She has lost 80 lbs since preop and I have lost 85 since preop and 105 overall since last year. Luckily her symptoms are greatly reduced and we are both doing amazing now.

If you feel it is too fast, then it may be too quick. One thing that I am doing is putting down my silverware for 20 seconds before moving on to my next bite. This helps to slow down my eating and I know when I get full. I also measure out how much I eat so that I don't eat more than I should.

What to expect on first consult
mswillis5 replied to NorthernMaine's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My wife and I went from first consult on 9/15/20 to Surgery 11/11/20 together. My wife and I had already done the 6 months of diets previously with other doctors so we were able to complete the rest of the requirements pretty quickly. Depending on your requirements will determine how long until you have surgery. My doctors office said that my insurance was amazing and would love if all insurances were like mine, so our experience could be out of the norm. -
Do any of you wonder if your stomach is too small or too big?
mswillis5 replied to Tim C's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You are losing about as fast as I did. I started preop 135 days ago and have lost 85 lbs. It was ~1 lb a day for quite a while at the early stages of our journey. In the last 2 months, it has slowed to under 10 lbs a month now, but is still steady but slower as I approach my maintenance weight already. As far as if I feel my stomach is too small or too large, I believe it is just the right size. I was never hungry or full before this journey and now I feel full at about 3/4 cup of food. I am not sure I am getting hungry yet but can tell when it is time for me to eat. -
My electrolytes were out of balance during my preop and I had to consume quite a bit of salt for my headaches/light headedness to go away. It is very possible that this is the case. To help with my situation I drank the broth of full salt Progresso soups. It helped to alleviate my symptoms pretty quickly. I also made sure to get plenty of fluids in throughout the day and not drink them too quickly.

Premier protein for liquid diet
mswillis5 replied to Sbean12's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My wife and I did pre-op together and had a variety of drinks. Premier Protein was one of the ones that we had along with Fairlife nutritional drinks. We also were on liquids only and had sugar free jello, broth (drained soups), and sugar free popsicles. The protein shakes were very convenient and helped us to just pick up and go when we needed to -
My wife and I had an extra pillow for a short time but that is it. We didn't have to sleep upright and had surgery on the same day. We also had no complications and have lost over 80lbs each since surgery on 11/11. This is the best decision we have ever made and we are doing so much more than we were able to previously.
