  1. My RNY bypass took over 3.5 hours because during my last caesarean layers had apparently been caught up in the stitching. My surgeon showed me photos and video afterwards which was gross! I'm glad he sorted it out but he did say it'd take a bit longer to heal and I've had more pain than I perhaps expected. It's feeling better now 3 months out. Hope you're feeling better soon.

    The dreaded stalls.... Help

I'm nearly 3 months out and currently in my first stall which has been going on for over 2 weeks. I'm very fed up with gaining and losing the same 1/2 lb.........It's just frustrating because I'm getting in the water and protein and never go over 1000 calories per day which before surgery would have meant I lost consistently! I wonder if it's because I've been on very reduced calories for 5 months and my body's getting used to the lower intake.

    Rant/Vent: Failure

People who are inclined to put on weight (for whatever reason) are never going to be able to be effortlessly thin as some people seem to be able to be. It's always going to be a battle against weight regain - don't look on your regain as a "failure" on your part; it's happened because you took your eye off the ball. But you've lost the weight once and you can definitely do it again! BriarRose's post is inspirational and really great advice - I haven't even got to goal yet and I KNOW that when I do I'll be fighting constantly to keep my weight there. You can do this!
  4. The first few weeks are difficult. Re the feeling cold and also hot - I have this too. I think it might be down to the hormone changes generated by the bypass surgery. As long as you don't have a fever maybe just see how it goes. I felt sick for some time after surgery and was taking anti-nausea medication. It went after a few weeks. Good luck with it, but if you're worried definitely check in with your doctor.
  5. I find that the days when I drink more fluid (usually 70 fl oz), I lose more weight the day after. Maybe try to up your fluid intake?

    Right Where I Shouldn't Be

I too am finding that I have cravings for the unhealthy foods I love. I don't keep those foods in the house - my husband's diabetic so we wouldn't have them in for him either, which makes it far easier to resist the cravings. I'm aware however that part of this is that mentally I feel I'm still "dieting" i.e. not at my goal weight. Once (hopefully) I reach goal weight I know I'm going to find it really difficult not to fall back into old habits. I need to deal with this. Thanks for your post which helps me know it's not just me who struggles.

    I'm doing something wrong

I'm eating between 800-900 calories per day - the dietitian says that at my stage (9 weeks post gastric bypass) I should be having between 800-1000. I'm losing weight fairly steadily at that calorie intake. I don't think I could function on 600 cals or less a day - at the beginning when I couldn't physically take in many calories I couldn't concentrate and felt exhausted a lot of the time.

    Stomach bloated

I'm only 9 weeks out from a RNY bypass - my stomach definitely bloats after eating anything. I am wearing stretchy clothes atm and I can definitely feel them getting tighter after eating. Also, while I'm happy with my weight loss and I've lost some off my stomach, I haven't lost as much there as everywhere else! I've gone down a shoe size but still have a spare tyre 😞
  9. Like you I donated unopened packets etc to a food bank. I haven't dealt with the frozen stuff/opened packets yet - it just seems so wasteful to throw it away and yet I know I shouldn't eat it..... I don't have anybody local to give it to and can't leave our area as we're in covid lockdown. I think I'll just have to bring myself to throw it away.

    No Support from Husband

It sounds as if he's being really horrible to you and that must be hard. But you've made the decision to go ahead with wls and while it's difficult without support at home, you can definitely do it.
  11. At 2 weeks post gastric bypass I was on the puree stage but having at least 1 protein shake and 1 protein water to keep up the protein. Even now at 9 weeks post op I have to add 1 protein shake in a day to keep at over 60g protein. Most of the shakes taste either too sweet or just disgusting to me and the only one I can drink is an iced latte shake which I have in the morning. It's a Ufit brand but I'm in the UK - don't know if it's available in the US?

    MOTIVATION POST

Well done! 50 lbs is a huge amount to lose!

4-5 weeks post food consumption yucky feel

I felt exhausted in the first few weeks when my food/calorie intake was very low. It gradually went as I managed to eat more food and was taking in more calories. People are different but my diet plan added in carbs at each meal from 6 weeks and that gave me more energy. The carbs are things like oatcakes (which are soft enough to chew and go down) or banana.

    Anyone for October 2020?

I'm still having to eat little and often - I can't manage more than you're saying in one meal, so I'm getting most of my protein via a daily shake, protein water, yoghurt and cottage cheese. I can't tolerate solid meats yet - so can eat minced beef or turkey, but not a piece of meat, I still can't eat eggs and also tinned fish like tuna. Those all just stick. I can get fresh fish down tho. According to my diet plan I should be ok with all of those by now, so I'm hoping it's going to improve.

    Anyone for October 2020?

I had a RNY bypass in late October. My surgery weight was 214 lbs (down from my starting weight of 231 lbs) and I am now 181 lbs, so I've lost 33 lbs. About the same as you! Of course I'd rather have lost more weight, but I think that's a good amount for just over 2 months.
  16. At your stage I only managed to get in the protein with protein shakes, and protein waters. The shakes started to make me feel nauseous and the flavoured protein waters were a good fallback. The Vieve brand have 20g protein for 500ml bottle.

    Hungry at night?

Over the last couple of weeks I've been feeling more hungry than I have before (9 weeks out). Quite often I'm not sure if it's hunger, thirst or head hunger. So now when I feel hungry I first have a drink, then if still feeling hungry I think "ok, do I want 50g of cottage cheese?" and if I don't then I know it's head hunger. If your hunger is always at night maybe you need to factor in a snack an hour before bed? Or I think I read in another thread that somebody keeps a snack back that she can have if she wakes up in the night hungry?
  18. This has been my experience too. I find myself getting fed up with eating the same sorts of food all the time (I'm in soft eating phase). I still can't tolerate most meat or tinned fish and so my meal options remain limited, bearing in mind calorific and protein requirements. I could quite easily revert to eating all of the wrong sorts of food when I'm depressed or bored, and unfortunately the current situation here in winter and in lockdown in the UK is depressing and boring.... So I'm trying to use a combination of willpower and planning, and I do factor in 1 x "treat" per day if I stick to the eating plan - and I count the calories. The treats aren't what I would have considered treats 6 months ago, but so far it's working. My treats include e.g. a small bag of lentil crisps (90 calories/2.2 protein) or 5 sugar free sweets (40 calories/0 protein!). I don't think I'm ever going to see an apple as a treat, so I figure I just have to work with who I am.

    Pregnancy

Congratulations on your baby! I'd say consult your dietitian or doctor, as nursing mothers have very specific nutritional needs.
  20. Congratulations! That's such an achievement!!

    Post op diet experience

The first 10 days were liquid only and then onto pureed foods. At 30 days I started on soft foods which lasts until 12 weeks out. I'm nearly 8 weeks out now and still can't manage most meats and canned fish (fresh fish is ok).

    800 calorie

I was told by my dietitian to go up to between 800-1000 calories at 6 weeks out. I gradually got to this and am still losing, though the weight loss has slowed to about 2 lbs per week. I have to get 60g protein and 2 litres water per day. Every plan seems so different! At the end of the day if you have a calorie deficit you'll lose weight.
  23. I'd find that hurtful too, and to be honest a surprising response from your mum, as you'd hope that of all people she'd be delighted for you. I've hardly seen anyone because of lockdown here, so haven't had to deal with this sort of reaction, but I'd hope that people I love would be positive about something as great as getting to a healthy weight? If they weren't then I wouldn't share with them, and it would probably make me view them in a new light - after all why waste time on people who don't want the best for you? You're doing really well - almost at goal, wow!!
  24. I bought quite a few things for post surgery and the ones I've used a lot are: good quality electronic food scales (my diet plan is focused on calories/food weights rather than cup measurements); a good quality blender (the least expensive nutribullet); some additional small food containers for the freezer (they hold approx 100ml - very useful for stewed apple, liquidised fruit etc) and some new weight scales (Renpho) which show all sorts of measurements. Hope that helps!
