How long after your surgery did you go back to work?
htaylor1021 replied to PaulaTx's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was banded Wed 8/13/08 and I was back to work Sun night 8/17/08. I am a pediatric home care nurse and most of the night my patient is asleep and I just have to check his ventilator. In the morning I have to get him ready which involves trach and gtube care etc. I don't have to do any heavy lifting or anything. I was a little sore after the frist 2 nights just from the bending and twisting, but nothing intolerable. -
I am a uncomfortable Help!
htaylor1021 replied to htaylor1021's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you, both of you. I did call the Doctors office around 3 yesterday. The NP didn't seem worried. She told me to drink some warm fluids and that the feeling should pass. She also suggested that it may be gas although it really didn't feel like gas to me. I am feeling much better now. -
I am one week post op and still on the full liquid diet. I was having some lobster bisque that had been "strained" of lobster. I was having no problems until I took one swallow that had a piece of lobster in it. I felt it right as I was swallowing. Everything seemed OK though until 2-3 hours later and now I have an uncomfortable feeling in my diaphram area. It doesn't really hurt it just feels like pressure. Liquids can go down ok. So now I have some questions...first can this hurt me or my band? Is there anything I should do? Is this going to rip the sutures around my band?

Ladies, Did You Get To Wear Your "Skivies" During Surgery?
htaylor1021 replied to Ineedalapband's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I was surprised when the nurse told me to put the gown on, I asked if I had to remove my underwear and she said no, I could leave them on. They were still on when I woke up from recovery too. -

Just wondering how everyone else banded on my day is doing. Hope you all are doing well!!

Well, I am banded. I arrived at short term surgery at 8:30am Wed August 13th. I was called into the back and a nice young student nurse tech took my vitals and gave me my gown, booties, and ever so stylish bonnet to put on. Just a few minutes later, the anesthesiologist came in to meet with me and go over everything, ie: any loose teeth, problems with anesthesia in the past, allergies, etc. Dr Yood came in to see me at this point to see how I was doing and told me he would see me soon in the OR. Then they asked me if I could give a small urine sample. Good thing they said small because, I had worked all night and had nothing to eat or drink and really had very little urine to give them lol. Next, someone came and walked me into the operating room. This surprised me a little bit because always in the past when I had brought someone to surgery they had them on a stretcher inserted the IV and gave them some meds before they were ever taken back to the OR. In the OR I hopped up onto the table. They had me lay back with my arms out stretched. One nurse put a strap across my thighs then put the air boots on my lower legs while someone else started my IV. They were extremely nice and gave me a numbing shot for the IV, I didn’t feel a thing. Everyone was very friendly and I got a chance to joke with Doctor Yood a little bit. And that is all I remember until waking up in the recovery room. In the R.R. the nurse was very nice but seemed timid and unsure of herself. While I was sleeping they had inserted an arterial line, I woke up to the nurse removing this and putting a pressure dressing on. I am sure this is not the first time I woke up but it is from this point on that I became cognitively aware of what was going on. Since I was going home the same day they came in to do X-rays to check the placement of the band. While they were moving me around, I became a little nauseous but that subsided. I asked the nurse for something to drink and she gave me my shot glass of water. My Mom was allowed to come in at this point. Dr. yood came in to see me and talk to me about my surgery. He told me everything went great. I was in some pain so the nurse brought me some liquid Tylenol with codeine. I sipped at it, drank almost ½ of it and just felt like I couldn’t drink anymore. This made the nurse very concerned, and at her strong urging I drank the last half. I promptly became sick. Oh well. They gave me some zofran via the IV and I began to feel better. A little later I got up to go to the bathroom. I had some more water and an ounce of juice. At this point it is almost 3pm I am doing well my vitals are great so we start getting ready to go home. I am unhooked from everything and get dressed. They give me a ride in a wheelchair to the exit and my mom gives me a ride home. At home I talk to some family and friends and let them know I am doing alright. I am surprised that my throat doesn’t hurt. I was extremely worried about this because after my endoscopy I was sore for two days. My neck is sore on both sides though, and my back is killing me. I continue to sip my water and doze off and on through out the evening. I am impressed with my level of pain, don’t get me wrong I am definitely uncomfortable but I am in nowhere near as much pain as expected. I sleep downstairs on the couch wed night. Thursday when I wake up I have two ounces of my atkins shake and some Tylenol with codeine. Take a walk around the house and wash up. My hair is a sight to be seen. I have VERY curly hair and there is no taming it. Since I can’t take a shower yet and there is no way I am going to lean over the sink and wash it I say screw it put a ponytail and baseball cap on and call it a day. For lunch I have two ounces of strained cream of chicken and continue to sip my liquids. I take a walk outside around the yard with my daughter and it feels amazing to be outside. When I first start walking it is uncomfortable but as I go along I loosen up and it begins to feel great. I fall asleep very easy though and I continue to doze some throughout the day. When my husband comes home we take another walk around the yard and then I take some more pain meds. I have two more ounces of strained cream of chicken and sleep some more. It is now 4am Friday morning and since I have slept so much, I am now wide awake and thought I would post my journey into bandlandia for anyone interested. BTW I have a realize band.

Hi Everyone, I'm getting banded August 13th at Hospital of St. Raphael's in New Haven CT, by Dr Yood. I had my EKG, Chest X-ray, and Meeting with anesthesiologist yesterday. Today, I had my endoscopy. My throat really hurts so now I am even more afraid of being intubated. I still can't believe it is going to be next week. I have been waiting so long for this. I am excited and scared all at the same time. Any advice/tips people have would be appreciated.

I have Highmark bc/bs ppo also. I was only required to do 6 months of supervised meetings. I just had my lost visit with the psych and nutritionist on Friday. I don't know if they submitted the paper work friday or if they would wait until Monday. WS467 have u heard anything back yet? Nursenky9, I have been following your trials among the threads. What happens now that they have refused to accept some of the stuff you submitted. Please keep me updated. I will be sure to do the same too. I am Heather btw. I live in CT. I am a peditatric home care nurse. Married 1 DD. (2 if u count DH) -
Hi all, Thought I would introduce my self. My name is Heather and I live in Connecticut. I am a pediatric homecare nurse. I have been exploring the options for WLS for a few years now and in November of 2007 I went to my first WLS seminar. I have now completed five out of the six required nutrition and exercise meetings. I have finished my two visits with psych AND DRUM ROLL PLEASE….. It has been two and a half weeks since I had a cigarette! I have my first meeting with the nutritionist tomorrow. I will have to do a 5 day diet that my doctor calls an atkins diet from hell and then come back in to see if I am in ketoacidosis (even my doctor thinks this is dumb, but it is a hoop that one of the older docs insists upon. I will jump through any hoops that will get me to my goal.) After I complete this they will submit my paper work for insurance approval. I have no idea how long approval will take. Then I have to do pre-op testing. I am hoping to have my surgery by the end of summer. (If I am honest I hope to have it by the middle of July) Does anyone know the dx code and procedure code for a fill so I can find out my insurances policy on them (I have highmarks BC/BS.) I have started working on bandster habits. I have been measuring my food and while a lot of the time I find the right portion satisfying, the hunger comes back usually within 2-3hrs. I can't wait to have a band help me with that. I know that the band won't help me with the boredom or emotional eating but if I am not physically hungry a lot of the time I am hoping it will be easier to deal with the head hunger. I have also been working on not drinking during meals and slowing down and chew chew chewing my food. The slowing down has been the hardest for me; I have trained myself over the years to gobble down my food so that I have time for a cigarette during my break. I have decided to not worry about the soda and I will let that resolve itself with the surgery. I anticipate that it will be like most of you say after not drinking it for awhile I just won't want it. I have a long list of the reasons I want to do this and my goals for weight loss. The last five months have flown by. I am really hoping that the next few do too. Now onto the questions and comments lol: 1) I am 34 years old and have one 13yo dtr we would like to have more children but my weight has made this more difficult. Has anyone heard of anyone conceiving after the lap band? Was there any increased risk? How did it impact their weight loss post baby? 2) You guys are an amazing group of people the way you support each other. I am really glad that I found this group. I can tell that it will be a resource that I will use frequently. You all are an amazing fount of information. 3) Right now I am so overweight and out of shape that I am finding it really hard to do any exercise. I am thinking that after I have lost some weight I will be able to exercise better. Has anyone found this to be true? 4) How long are most of you in the hospital? I was under the impression that I would be in for a max of one day, barring any unexpected complications. 5) Is anybody from Connecticut in here?

just introducing myself
htaylor1021 replied to htaylor1021's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi All, It is nice to see so many people from CT here. Even though I live n Wethersfield, I am having my surgery done at St. Rapheal's in New Haven by Dr. Steven Yood. I have known him for years and I would not go to anyone else. I was supposed to have my meeting with the nutritionist last week on the 13th but she called me that day and needed to reschedule. My appt. is now next thur the 26th. I was so bummed when she called because that just delays everything. I know it is only 2 weeks but being so close to the finish line I really was upset. I am so ready for everything to be done. Allie you arealmost there!! How are you doing? Please keep us posted. I would love to talk to you after surgery to see how you are doing. -
Hi I am just looking for an update from some of you that got your actitrainers awhile ago. Here are the reviews I found on amazon. com I am wondering if anybody on here has/had the problems that people are writing about on amazon "purchased an ActiTrainer device to get better control on my calories out. It sounds like it should do a very credible job.... Has an accelerometer and a heart rate monitor. The web site offers it as 'the only trainer you will ever need' I believe the product has great potential. Unfortunately the current version has significant flaws including: The heart rate monitor collects heart rate but doesn't appear to use it in the calorie calculations. The accelerometer doesn't seem to capture the motion of weight lifting or cycling... About the same as sitting. (their web site admits this flaw if you read between the lines... says they still capture heart rate.. doesnt say they dont use heart rate data in calorie computations. So, if you are walking or running you can probably get a credible estimate of calories. But don't count on it for anything else. I also wore it snowshoeing in addition to my Polar s625x heart rate monitor hoping to get a second opinion on calorie burn and mileage. (The Polar does mileage and speed when used with its footpod but I couldn't wear its foot pod while snowshoeing. The Actitrainer turned itself off (even though it was charged) so i missed the mileage altogether. I am not exactly sure why I wouldn't just use a $20 pedometer rather than ActiTrainer. PS Final insult... 15% restocking fee to return this thing to the manufacturer " "I was really excited to use this device to keep track of my progress with regards to my workouts. However, being used to my trusty ol' HR monitor, I found this device to be clunky and easily noticed by my coworkers! I hated having to explain what this thing was on my hip. Anyway, I think the premise is a great idea but for the money I'm sticking with my heart rate monitor." "When you install software, before you get to use the product, they want you to buy a subscription to their site. It will not go any further until you subscribe. It is done on paypal which is not right either. I could not get past that screen until I did subscribe to some kind of program, even if the progam says 1st 15 days are free. Then after 1st trail period is over, you have to pay per month or you can not access the site or track information anymore. Monthly fee starts at 9.95 and they go up from there. The install of the software did not work correctly, could not get the screens to appear correct on screen. Very hard to work. No 800 number to call for help. I would not recommend to anyone. I Sent item back within first 48 hours and was charged a 15% restock fee plus shipping. Email company and got a rude email back, like they just did not care. I did not seeanything about restock fee anywhere on site just 15 day return policy. HARD TO WORK, HARD TO INSTALL, EXPENSIVE TO USE." "The Actitrainer is awesome! I bought the Actitrainer about two weeks ago after my wife saw their ad on a womens fitness website. I was a little skeptical since I had never heard of this company before but it was pretty inexpensive compared to other similar products so I decided to give it a try. I have been trying to lose the 30 pounds I gained during my wife's pregnancy two years ago so I started jogging a few months back and thought this would be a great way to keep track of my workouts. I wear it during my morning runs and the software program tells me how far I go, how many calories I burn, my heart rate and a lot more. Then my wife found out that the free software trial allowed multiple users, so she started wearing it around the house during the day to see how many calories she burned and entering the food she eats into the mealtracker. We started fighting over who gets to wear it but she just ordered the pink one today so problem solved! Highly recommended!" I am really interested in this comment "The accelerometer doesn't seem to capture the motion of weight lifting or cycling... About the same as sitting. (their web site admits this flaw if you read between the lines... says they still capture heart rate.. doesnt say they dont use heart rate data in calorie computations. " since I am interested in cycling. Have any of you found this to be true?? Also this is going to sound stupid but is it Water proof? Can you wear it in the rain or swimming?
