  1. Hi Meow and fellow bypassers! I have had three rounds of vomiting so far; twice with fish and once with soft, white watermelon seeds. I approach my protein sources very cautiously now and have only had tuna, salmon, scallops, and two tiny bites of my husbands chicken breast. I have no desire for tuna again, as that was the first thing that made me sick. The scallops are lovely! I have only lost about 7 pounds since surgery, which is bumming me out, but I am just sticking with the program. I eat around 500-600 kcals per day and generally get 60 + grams of protein, 64 oz water. I am walking most days for 20-30 minutes and averaging around 7000 total steps daily. I probably need to up my kcals a bit, but it is hard without adding fat and/or more carbs. I get plenty of carbs from beans and occasional whole grain bread or crackers plus incidentals in dairy. I feel good and went back to work on Monday (2 weeks off). My energy is great, but I am tired by 8 pm. Thinking best thoughts for all my pre- and post-op buddies out there!

    Protein suggestions

I have the same problem with whey proteins since my surgery. I have found GenePro to be pretty tolerable. I can’t taste it in a fruit smoothie. Might be worth a try.

Waiting to see some scale mivemeny

Add me to the list of SLOW losers. I am two weeks post-op and have only lost 5 pounds. I am exercising about 30 mins per day and get around 7000 total steps per day. It is very frustrating watching others lose 15 pounds in the same time period. Hope my body kicks into weight loss mode soon.

    Can fruit cause dumping syndrome??

When I eat something my new pouch does not like, I will have pressure, nausea, and cramping. These symptoms persist until I vomit up whatever the pouch dislikes. It sometimes takes hours to get it all out and it is miserable. So far this has happened with tuna, salmon, and the soft white seeds from watermelon. With the fishes, I was sick for about 6 hours each time. It is totally debilitating. @Natalierae, your sleeve is probably as picky as my pouch. Trust the rejection cues.
  5. I have been following this thread. I am two weeks post-op RNY. I lost 15 pounds on pre-op diet and 5 since surgery. It is definitely disheartening. I can only get in about 500 calories per day at this point as I feel quite a bit of restriction. I am around 60 G protein per day and mostly hit 64 oz of water. I am also walking 30 + minutes per day and generally get well over 7000 steps per day. I feel much more energetic than I did pre-surgery, but really want to see that number on the scale move too. Arggg!

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

RNY on July 6. My incisions are just itchy and tight feeling, but other than that, no significant pain. My only real pain at this time is when I put something in my new tummy that is doesn’t like. It cramps horribly until I can throw it all up, which sometimes takes hours 😢 So far, the new tummy does not like tuna or salmon or those soft white seeds in watermelon. All have been rejected by the tummy and the fishes both took around 6 hours of misery to get out of the tummy. I have not been brave enough to try any other meats. Tummy likes eggs, dairy, tofu, beans, so I guess that sums up my food choices at this point. Hope everyone is progressing well post-op and pre-op alike.
  7. Please contact your surgeon, @MaybeMeow. He can order tests if he thinks they are needed, and will not order them if he has an explanation for your symptoms. It is a win for you either way. I am sure your husband does not order unnecessary tests for his patients and your surgeon won’t either. You trusted your surgeon to do your bypass, so it is time to trust him again with your concerns. Please keep us posted.
  8. Meow, thanks for checking in. My surgeon’s nurse did call today and told me the surgeon says my symptoms are related to the hernia repair and I just have to let it heal. I have been feeling pretty good though, except I ate too much for dinner 🤦🏼‍♀️ I am able to eat puréed foods right now without anymore GI distress and vomiting. Yay! I know it must feel like a pretty small victory, but you did make it to Onederland. Congrats! Keep on keeping on!

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

So I had bypass and my surgery happened about 2:30 PM. I got to my hospital room around 6:00 PM. I would have been fine at home after about 9-10 PM. Those first few hours I was pretty out of it, but even then I was was getting up and walking around by myself. The only time I needed help moving around was my first walk around 7 PM. I was pretty dopey and made my husband walk with me. The only thing I needed all night was ice chips that I could have gotten myself if allowed. Ultimately it is up to you and your comfort level. Some questions to think about: Have you had surgery before? How did you feel after anesthesia? How was your nausea? Do you have someone that would be comfortable with you in the hotel post-op? Do you have any conditions that already make it hard for you to get around? Ps. If you do decide to go with the outpatient, ask your surgeon about a scopolamine patch. It really helped eliminate almost all post-op nausea for me.

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

@Swjtes and @IWantTheDream I honestly feel your pain. I have had several incidences since surgery (bypass and hiatal hernia repair 7/6) where my stomach and intestines feel full of air that no amount of burping or passing gas will alleviate. This comes with nausea and cramping, and lasts for several hours. Last night I suffered this again and vomited repeatedly for about 6 hours. Obviously, I am not vomiting much at a time and it is mostly liquid. It is super discouraging and disheartening, but I KNOW this will pass. I do have a call into the surgeon’s office to talk this through with his nurse. Part of me thinks this may be a severe lactose intolerance issue, which would break my heart, as cheese is literally my favorite food. I just don’t know what to eat right now in the puréed stage with no dairy products Including whey proteins. Anyhow, that is my sob story. I still do not regret my surgery, because what I was doing was not working. Obesity and aging are not a good combo. I am just going to keep plugging away at trying to get healthy and be kind to myself at the same time. Wishing you both healing and health.
  11. I don’t think I could get down a cup of anything, but that does sound good. Maybe I’ll try later today. 😊 thank you!

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

Loving you positive outlook, Swtjtes! My first week post-op has had some huge swings from misery to feeling pretty good. Officially my puréed stage starts tomorrow, but have already started to incorporate a few things the last two days. I might try that egg salad for lunch today. Eggs have always been my go to for an iffy belly, so it has been weird to not be trying to incorporate them. I am totally with you on looking forward to savoring smaller portions of tasty, nourishing foods! I love to cook, so it will eventually be nice to work out making incredibly yummy, small portion meals.

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

Just wanted to chime in on how bad I feel for you about this. I have been pretty self absorbed the last week or so. Try to stay focused on your end goal as much as possible! Walk, eat good food to nourish your body and mind. Know we are all going to be waiting for you here. 💕

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

I also had bypass on July 6 and was supposed to be starting puréed foods on July 13. Unfortunately I had a bump in the road two days ago and did not eat anything (water only) for over 24 hours. After 24 hours with nothing, the only thing I could talk myself into trying was the cottage cheese from my puréed list. I had a couple tablespoons last night and it was heaven. I tried a couple tablespoons of protein shake this morning with nausea after 1 tablespoon, so I waited an hour and now I am eating 2 tablespoons of cottage cheese. I guess I am starting puréed early🤷‍♀️ Btw, pretty sure my “bump” in the road was dumping from too much bone broth at a time (about 4 oz). It was not a good time. Going to stick with 2 tablespoon portions for several more days and try protein shakes again in another day or two.
  15. I think the nausea started before the pain but I am sure each symptom made the other worse. Yesterday the sipping was so hard, but I have been doing better today. I am urinating enough so I don’t think dehydration is a problem. Crystal light is hitting the spot. I just need some sleep and everything will improve. Our poor little group. 😢 I had a bit of jello. I don’t know if I can ever do whey protein powder again. With the nausea there was always this underlying taste of sour whey protein. Yuck! I will worry about protein tomorrow.

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

Just a thought of “unflavored” protein powder is making me nauseated right now. I bought the Unjury on the recommendation of some folks on this forum and it is a whole new level of foul. It will be heading into the garbage. Next up, I ordered some Genpro. Hopefully it will be better. Sorry about your incisional pain. Hang in there!
  17. Well friends, I was doing great until I wasn’t. I had been wearing a scopolamine patch since they put it on me in pre-op and took it off yesterday per my instructions. Then I was nauseous. Then I had pain. Then I was miserable. I did have a hiatal hernia repair and I believe it started to cause some spasms to my diaphragm which were less than pleasant. I think 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻I finally found the recipe of anti-nausea med and Tylenol where I feel almost functional. The actual plain Tylenol is working so much better for me than the narcotics. I have not eaten anything since about 24 hours ago and I am afraid to try. Just been focusing on my water, which I am doing much better with today. I think I will probably just be conservative with clear liquids only today and then see about advancing again tomorrow. I hope you all are doing well with recovery!

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

Hi Team July and visitors! I had my bypass surgery on Monday. I have been doing quite well, but the pain in my left shoulder really ramped up last night. My surgeon’s PA said I would have referred pain from my diaphragm due to a hiatal hernia repair. I am hoping it feels better soon. Other than that, I did manage a short walk yesterday along with getting my protein and water in. All in all, I feel like I’m doing well and would consider myself as doing great if the shoulder pain would reduce a bit. Oh well, Tylenol is my friend. Hope all of you are hanging in there as your surgeries happen. Please let us know how you are doing.
  19. Doing really well with my protein today, especially since it is my first day with full liquids. I am at 32g so far and plan to try to get a shake in tonight for dinner, which will take me up to 60-ish g. No problems with getting my water. I am always thirsty and just keep sipping. I will probably be close to 80 oz water by the end of the day. I did go for a short 15 minute walk. I can assure I did not set any land speed records with my 23 minute mile pace. Lol. Looking forward to feeling better each day. Meow, I am impressed with you eating chicken and the soup sounds amazing. I can’t wait for purées, next week and then off to mushies. I want some baked tofu when I get to mushies at day 14. @MaybeMeow, this weight stall WILL pass. You are doing the right stuff. Your body just needs to catch up. 😜
  20. Hi friends! Just thought I would give you guys a bit more info on my trip to the other side. I was pretty nervous the morning of my surgery. My surgery was scheduled for 2 PM so I didn’t have to be at the hospital until 11:30 AM, which gave me way to much time to get nervous. My mom and dad dropped me at the hospital because it made more sense for my husband to work Monday and be off Tuesday when I got to go home. BTW, my parents have been divorced for 44 years, lol, thankfully they are friends so they joined up to give me a ride. I did not have anyone in pre-op, but my nurse was great, and I ended up getting really calm in pre-op, almost bizarrely calm. I was out cold within minutes of getting to the OR and then woke up in recovery. I was in a ton of pain when I first woke up. I am guessing it was from my hiatal hernia repair. I don’t think my amount of pain was remotely normal. I actually peed myself it was so bad. The nurse gave me pain meds and I have had minimal pain since then. At this point, I would say I have some incisional discomfort...that’s it. I did take some pain medicines last night to help me rest better. Food is so weird. I am not hungry but know I need to eat. Surgery day and yesterday I was on clear liquids. Today I am on full liquids and start purées on Monday. I made some cream of wheat this morning and mixed 2 tablespoons of prepared cereal with about 1/2 scoop of protein powder. I had about 4 small bites and then burped, taking that as a cue to stop eating. I will try again in a bit. I feel like I need the food, but I just don’t have hunger and nothing sounds particularly tempting at this point. I feel like I need water, but I’m trying to wait a bit longer after my food intake. I also took all my morning meds, so that may have contributed to me filling up so quickly. Anyhow, everyone has commented on how well I am doing. My husband is impressed that I am able to walk fully upright without any pain. The doctors and nurses were all impressed with how much walking I was doing at the hospital. I’m sure this has contributed to my lack of pain. Unfortunately, until I can get more food in me, my walking will need to be minimal as I am a bit lightheaded this morning. Maybe by this evening I can walk around the block. I did come home from the hospital with my weight up by 1.5 pounds, which seems really normal. So looking forward to some drops soon. Good luck to everyone with surgeries still to come! Keep us all posted on how you are doing! 😊😊

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

So sorry this is happening to you! Hopefully you will be rescheduled in no time. We are all cheering for you!
  22. Meow! And crew! I am doing well. Just waiting impatiently to be discharged. I want my bed. Pain is not too bad. I have walked probably about 5000 steps since I got to my room around 6 PM. For reference it is 11:20 AM now. The surgeon’s physician assistant actually told me to walk less. Lol! Meow! Sounds like you hit you first stall. Like someone else has mention, Onward! 😊

    July 2020 Surgery anyone?

Hi July peeps! I had my RNY yesterday. Doing well. Should be discharged after my clear liquid lunch. Some pain, but mostly not too bad. Hope all of my surgery twins and those having surgery this week are doing well. I will try to keep everyone posted on here.

There is nothing “lyte” about golytely. That stuff is a bummer. Strange on the bowel prep as well. I don’t know if any of the rest of us have/had to do that. Try to remember this is part of the best birthday gift you will ever give yourself. Sending good vibes, positive thoughts, and wishes for a great year ahead on this less than stellar birthday!

    Feeling Guilty(as I should)

Let go of the guilt. Move forward. I am on my last day of the pre-op diet and it has been hard to stick with. Some days were absolute torture and others were just blah because I am sooo sick of protein shakes. I have used these last two weeks to work on getting my head in the game by watching some YouTube videos and reading a book called Intuitive Eating. While some of the ideas in the book are premature for me to practice during pre-op or post-op, I do hope to incorporate the concepts in my life for maintenance. I have also avoided social situations with food during this time, because I don’t want the extra temptation. With that said, I did sit next to my husband last night while he ate a couple of small cheeseburgers and definitely wanted to grab one. Lol. I am not perfect. I did have a light string cheese about a week ago. It wasn’t remotely satisfying and has made it easier to resist the siren call of food. With few exceptions ( @MIKEYY84), none of us are perfect. Be kind to yourself and move on with following you surgeon’s diet. You can do it!
