Multiple surgeries in one
California Guy replied to JAN78's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I programmed a gallbladder, hiatal hernia, and duodenal switch for one day. Remember the proactive gallbladder removal will likely prevent a risk an emergency operation later. In my case, they did some labs during surgery and only were able to complete the gallbladder and hernia on Surgery #1. Diagnosing and clearing a restricted common bile duct required four procedures on day 3 of my hospital stay. I got the duodenal switch (SADI-S) done on day 4 of my hospital stay. I didn't experience any complications from the surgeries and would definitely do it again. -
Risks Concerns
California Guy replied to NJTeacher2772's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I did some research and found studies with zero, 0.2% or 1.3% mortality rate for the SADI-S WLS. I had a 43 BMI at the beginning of the year when I requested the surgery. I had a 35 BMI on the day of surgery. Compared to most patients in these studies, I was probably the healthiest person so I believe my risk was quite low. The benefits of lowering my BMI to 28 so far definitely improve my health and outweigh the risks. -
I feel like I’m not doing all I can
California Guy replied to Holodisplay's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
No fraud there. You changed your eating habits for the better and lost weight as a result. That's great progress. I started the year at 300 lbs. and had my Revision to DS in May. I talk about the change in nutrition and revision surgery with whoever asks. Getting comments like "You look like a different person" all the time. Remember the surgery didn't take any weight off. Your new nutrition plan did. If you follow the plan long term, you'll reach your goal. I got the sleeve 7 years ago. I didn't plan out my nutrition very well. I relied on protein bars and protein shakes heavily as a long term diet. I've learned since then it is better to base your nutrition on natural sources, not processed foods. Once I finished the puree diet, I stopped consuming protein shakes and protein bars. -
Weigh more after surgery than before?
California Guy replied to SAS11's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I gained 23 lbs. in the hospital in 5 days getting my revision to DS surgery. I was on an IV the whole time. I had nothing to eat and almost nothing to drink while in the hospital. It took 5 more days to get back to my pre-surgery weight. -
Every insurance company has a different policy. Call and inquire what your insurance company's requirements are for bariatric WL surgery.

Revision date set!
California Guy replied to NewMe3's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Welcome to the forum. I wish you the best possible outcome in December. I had a similar experience with a sleeve and weight regain. I chose the Loop DS (SADI-S), got it done in May, and have had great results! I advise you to forget all your past food preferences. Start over and build a long term nutrition plan that you will follow life long. This should include everything your nutritionist recommends. You will find new foods you will look forward to eating. When you go through your doctor mandated stages, only introduce foods in your new written plan. -
1 year after gastric sleeve problems...
California Guy replied to Anna N.'s topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Here is how I get my protein. Half the time breakfast is an egg with Turkey sausage or Nonfat yogurt. Lunch is usually grilled chicken breast or carved chicken/turkey and cheese slices on low fat triscuit crackers. Dinners always include lean proteins such as chicken, shrimp, turkey, lean steak. I prepare a lot of stir fry with these proteins and vegetables. Beef stew, turkey tacos, turkey meatballs, pulled chicken, roast chicken. I prepare homemade soups also. Chunk chicken or beef and barley. My go to snack is a homemade trail mix with 12 components, lots of nuts. I take one bariatricpal multi vitamin each morning. I get all my protein from natural food. I'm not consuming any protein bars or shakes now. They were great when I had the temporary, doctor mandated restrictive diet. I set my nutrition plan based on the documentation I got from the nutritionist. 5 servings vegetables per day 4 servings fruit per day 5 servings grains - rice, cereal, crackers bread tortillas 3 servings dairy - milk, yogurt, cheese 2 lean poultry, meat, eggs I have about 4 oz. of diluted grape or orange juice daily. The only other beverage I ever have is water. I have no deep fried foods, no carbonated beverages, teas, or coffee. Yogurt is the only food I have with added sugars. I also snack on fruit, vegetables, trail mix, and sugar free popsicles (Budget Saver Sugar Free Cherry Pineapple Monster Pops available at Walmart or HEB) are the best). -
Where to start
California Guy replied to mariangel174@yahoo.com's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For me, getting to my highest weight meant eating fast food twice a day. Following my current nutrition plan involves home prepared meals and packing a lunch to work. I'm saving so much money I'm sure the savings will offset the out of pocket (thousands) I had to pay for surgery and treatment this year. I take a bariatric vitamin once a day from BariatricPal. I just passed my blood work so I know the vitamins are quality. -
How long after gastric sleeve did you wait to drink
California Guy replied to ladyJ2198's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm a non-drinker so maybe I shouldn't comment on this one. Sounds to me like a test. You should only incorporate healthy foods and drinks into your diet at this point. If you go to Vegas and stick to your diet, you'll come back more confident knowing you overcame the hardest trial. For me, when others partake but I pass on cookies, soda, or fried foods I know I'll be fine. -
1 year after gastric sleeve problems...
California Guy replied to Anna N.'s topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I have a similar experience to share. I got the sleeve in 2013. About 1 year post op I hadn't reached my goal weight and decided to do a liquid only diet for 4 weeks. We all know liquid diets will result in weight loss. Three weeks in, I felt faint. I almost passed out a few times when going from sitting to standing. I lost my appetite and found no pleasure in anything I did. At this point I had lost 117 lbs. I convinced myself if weight loss was going to make me feel so bad, it wasn't worth it. I gradually let my diet slip and over the next few years gained 90 lbs. This year I went in for a revision to DS. Again, I felt faint frequently. I fainted one time at home and woke up on the tile floor. This time I did some research and consulted my doctors. I attributed the light headedness to a combination of several things. Too much low blood pressure medicine, so we halved it twice. I assumed my blood sugar was low so I added more fruit to my diet. Restrictive diet with many artificial foods (shakes). It was time to advance to a soft food diet so I started eating a great variety of real food and dropped protein shakes completely. I needed more calories. Ketosis, I had a lot of rapid weight loss. At this stage the weight loss slowed a bit. Dehydration. I was doing a lot of outdoor home projects in the Summer. I wasn't getting enough water. I tested as much as I could individually and was able to rule out the blood pressure medicine. Even when I didn't take medicine for days, I was light headed. Even when I drank plenty of water for days, I was light headed all the time. From my experience the second time around, I dealt with the problems and changed everything up until I found the right combination. I eat healthy meals, get plenty of food, and lose weight each month. Four months later, I'm no longer feeling light headed. Today I'm at my lowest weight in 20 years. I know they call loss of satisfaction a form of depression. I never went to a psychiatrist. Maybe I should have but I don't feel I would get much benefit from them. My advice is to evaluate your nutrition plan and eliminate anything that isn't natural food. Natural sugars in fruit are better than anything with added sugars. Protein in lean meats is better than protein shakes or bars. -
Weight Loss and Probiotics
California Guy replied to peachadee's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I came back home after 5 days in the hospital for my duodenal switch revision. I weighed 23 lbs. more than when I left! I literally ate nothing during those 5 days. I had as little of the liquid diet components as possible. This weight was all IV fluids. I was on IV everyday for 5 days. I had IV infiltration due to a poor IV placement. I dropped 5 lbs. per day for 5 days. Don't gauge progress day by day. It is best to track your weight and look at the month to month change. You may even stall for a full month, but overall, you'll progress fine if you follow your diet. -
Anyone go into surgery alone?
California Guy replied to samiaam25's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was dropped off by my wife. My surgery was at the end of May. No visitors were allowed in the hospital but they were allowed in the operating waiting room, for a quick visit if desired. I decided to go alone anyway. In May, no one wanted to go near a hospital There was a lot of uncertainty and perceived risk around hospitals due to COVID. It was more difficult for my family since they didn't get good phone reports back from the surgeons or hospital but they knew there were some issues not going as planned. My first surgery (Day 1) was cut short. They resolved a hiatal hernia and removed the gallbladder. Required a second surgery (Day 3) to investigate and resolve a common bile duct stricture. I had the third surgery (Day 4) and got the revision to duodenal switch done. Went home on Day 5. Despite planning to be there only one or two nights, and having 7 procedures over 3 days of surgery, I felt great and recovered quickly. I'm grateful for the excellent care and precautions taken to ensure my weight loss surgery would be safe and successful. I wasn't nervous at all going into the first surgery. I have complete trust in the Surgeon's experience. I was well motivated to make a drastic change to improve my health. It paid off for sure. -
Months before surgery then one month after surgery, I found Walmart's Great Value nonfat yogurts to be very satisfying. I have at least one per day. They have a little fruit stirred in and do have a little sugar. I'm a picky eater. I tried plain yogurt but would rather not eat than have plain or greek yogurt.

Psych Test -did u have to take one?
California Guy replied to danahall5885's topic in Insurance & Financing
I learned a lot from those hundreds of questions. The message I took from the questions are if you are someone that doesn't respect authority or believes everything is a conspiracy, you may not follow doctor's orders. If you don't follow the prescribed diet following weight loss surgery, you could have serious complications or you could die. -
It is a little late for this, but I'll tell you what I recommend for the benefit of others that prepare for their surgery. In February this year I adopted the post surgery regular diet. This was to make sure I'd be able to follow the diet after surgery. Pre-surgery weight loss was very high. When you drop fired food and soda you'd be surprised at how easy it is to drop weight quickly. I got the surgery in May. Observing a healthy diet with great nutrition meant I didn't have any fried food or soda for months before doing the liquid diet. My cravings changed. This made it much easier. You will find after not having these foods for a month or two you won't crave them anymore. Hang in there. Fried food and sodas brought us obesity. Be strong and dismiss any thoughts of having these foods again. You have to make a lifelong nutrition change if you will be successful with your weight loss.

Getting rid of old/large clothes - too soon?
California Guy replied to LAJ23's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I recommend getting rid of all the clothes that don't fit anymore. This year, I went from a size 48 waist and bigger 3XL shirts to 40/2X. I ditched all my old clothes. Last week nothing fit again. I realized I was a 36/1X now. I cleaned out my closet again. Putting on smaller clothes and getting rid of the old clothes was one of the best rewards for the effort I put into the weight loss surgery. Think positive and commit to doing your part to continue losing weight. -
regaining and undoing their surgery
California Guy replied to dal101's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
The gastric bypass will bring other digestive advantages other than just having a smaller stomach. Also, a pouch reset may restore restrictions of your smaller stomach. I had a gastric sleeve. At first, it was restrictive. Later I was able to eat larger meals. When I did a liquid diet years later, the pouch reset itself. I felt full after very small meals again. -
What all would prevent you from getting approved?
California Guy replied to Biggerthanu's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Once you have your first surgeons consultation, your weight will be recorded. They will encourage you to diet and lose weight in preparation for surgery. It isn't common for people to be disqualified for losing weight prior to surgery. A restrictive liquid diet will produce great results. Losing weight will make your surgery quicker and safer since the liver's size will decrease. Also, some insurance plans approve at 35 BMI with a condition such as acid reflux, diabetes, or high blood pressure. -
Modified Duodenal Switch
California Guy replied to Lara in Arkansas's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
I had the Modified DS (SADI-S) in April 2020. Since the beginning of the year, I have lost 102 lbs. Half was lost pre-OP. The results have exceeded my expectations and I'm really pleased. It is a challenging process requiring a lot of will power to make difficult changes. Take this opportunity now that you are on a restrictive liquid diet to forget the foods you used to eat. Build a new long term nutritional plan and follow it. I hope your surgery goes smooth and your recovery is quick. -
I had three operations in four days in May. I was able to concentrate and focus answering emails and making a few phone calls in the hospital. Worked from home two days after discharge. I remember going back to work in the office one week after my sleeve surgery in 2013. That was too soon. Two weeks were recommended by the surgeon and would have been the right amount of time. Two weeks give you time to heal, get strong, and adjust to your new diet and system. It helps to be home and have all your special diet foods on hand.

Reached intermediate WL goal!
California Guy posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I just passed my intermediate goal weight of 208 lbs. I'm celebrating this milestone today. My final goal weight is set at a realistic 190 lbs. The intermediate goal of 208 pounds is significant since that is my lowest weight in over 20 years. Also, with a BMI under 30, it is the weight I am no longer obese. I am classified as overweight. Results came so fast. I weighed 300 lbs. at the beginning of the year. It has only been 2 1/2 months since my revision SADI-S surgery. I cleaned out my closet since I couldn't wear any of my clothes anymore. Finding nutritious food I love to eat has made this so easy. Nearly all my meals have been prepared at home. I created a set of original recipes. Today's lunch was ground turkey meat tacos. Dinner will be stir fry cashew chicken. Two factors that motivated me to make these changes are resolved with my weight loss. My blood pressure is now always at a healthy level. Pain in my hip joint has diminished by over 90%. -
Stairs after surgery
California Guy replied to Space.Crab's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My bedroom is on the second story. I had surgery, came home the next day, and went right upstairs. Going slow, it was not problem. I went up and down the stairs daily after that. -
What was your early weight loss like?
California Guy replied to WhatATool:-)'s topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I was in the hospital for surgeries 5 days. I practically ate nothing but gained 19 lbs. during that time (IV Fluids). Went home and lost 5 lbs. per day for 4 days. After that, over the next 4 weeks I lost 5 lbs. per week. Post OP months 2 and 3 averaged 10 lbs. per month weight loss. -
What should I expect?
California Guy replied to Milissa's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I recommend you wear whatever is easiest to put on and makes you feel comfortable. Wear whatever you would wear at home. I wore shorts and a T shirt on my way out. Good luck, I wish you the best possible outcome and a quick recovery. -
I had a small amount of pain from the largest laparoscopic incision. This is because they have to cut muscle and needed a large hole to extract the gallbladder. It felt much better after a week. I actually had two laparoscopic surgeries (same incisions) in a period of 4 days. I recovered really well from the first surgery after two days with very little pain. The second surgery (SADI-S) took a bit longer to recover from.
