  1. HAH!! You just described me and ALL of my Fathers family! I'm healthy as a horse and weigh about as much lol! I do agree that if a person is more than 50lbs overweight and NEEDS the surgery that they should be able to utilize this tool. Not for thin people to stay thin, but to improve health.

  3. I am getting banded next month but still have a lot of questions. One of the big ones is, How long do you wait after you have lost the weight to have the band removed? Do you even get it removed normally? is it 2 years, is it 10? Anyone have experience there?
  4. I am getting banded by Dr. Kirshenbaum on July 16th, and was wondering about your experience with him. I was also wondering how much your preop weight was and how you are doing now. I guess I am just looking for a little encouragement. Thanks!

    12 Days out!

From the research I have done, you don't really get that full feeling until you get fills, and even then it may take a while. Be patient, it will happen. Just do your best to follow what the doctor has told you, and wait for your fills  Good luck!!

    Introductions

Hi all! I'm Marie, I live in Salt Lake City with my husband. We have been married about a year and a half. I know I was overweight in high school but didn't care too much about it. I wish I had. But the weight didn't really start piling on until I was diagnosed with Osgood Slaughters Disease, that then severely limited my activities, and I was also on steroids for my asthma. It got up to 240 my first semester of college, and lost 25 lbs. I felt really good about that and kept doing what I was doing and gained it back-blech! By the time I got married I was up to 265, and now I'm 305. I am so grateful that my husband loves me for who I am, not what I look like. I prayed to find someone like that. Now I will hopefully look on the outside how I am on the inside.

    Considering Lap Band

The cost depends on the doctor. The cheapest I found for the states is Dr.Kirshenbaum in Colorado. The surgery, pre op consultations, post op care and 3 months of fills all come in for $9950. I have heard that in Mexico you can get it as low as $8000 or so. But I figured the difference with plane tickets and hotels would bump me up anyway, When you are self pay Doctors are more likely to let you have the surgery you want. Because they aren't accountable to insurance companies. I have seen people on the forum who weighed less than you and had the surgery. Good luck with your decisions!!!:grouphug:

    Period talk.

Well, I haven't skipped my period after all. That was the good news. Bad news is it is back with a vengance! I have cramps so bad that it reminds me of high school when they used to make me throw up they hurt so bad! I am really bleeding heavily too. it SUCKS!!!! Anyway, I'm thinking about going on birth control to even it out, since hubby and I have decided to wait a year after the surgery for me to try and get pregnant. Any advice?

    Fluffy ... wtf FLUFFY??

I watched a comedian once who (being very large himself) has a list of like 5 levels of fat - husky, fluffy, etc. can't really remember all of them. He did say his mom said "you aren't fat- you're fluffy' - so for him it was making him feel better.

    Period talk.

How common is it to have a period stop when you weigh so much? This is currently happening to me. My last period (it may have been a miscarriage) lasted for 10 days- the longest I have ever had. and this month...nothing(i took a pregnancy test Sunday, it was negative) I have never missed a period. They are always 2-4 days, and just recently all my cramps have gone away. I'm getting a little worried. :unsure:Not to say that I don't appreciate skipping the bleeding, bloating, and mood swings. I just was wondering how many people have had similar experiences?

    What am I gonna do????

Have you looked into the more cost effective doc in the states? My doctor in Colorado does the surgery and 3 months pot op care (including fills) for $9950. I know that Mexico may be cheaper for the surgery, but when you add up the flights and hotel stays, it might be better to do it here. Maybe it would put your husbands mind at ease too. my doc is Dr. Kirshenbaum and his website is Lap Band Surgery in Denver Colorado | Lap Band Surgeon in Denver | Gastric Band Surgery Denver | Bariatric Surgery. I hope this helps. Good luck either way!!
  16. Is there anyone out there who has had a normal delivery with a band in? My hubby and I are thinking about waiting to have a baby for a while after I get banded, but I still have questions. I saw a lot of women talking on here about having c-sections and I really don't want one unless absolutely necessary, so.... Any help?

    Getting Banded June 30th. HELP

I really agree, I am going to be on a preop diet, but if you practice now it will make things easier later. Maybe try and cut out carbs, my doctor said that it really helps to shrink the liver. So if you are really worried try that. :biggrin2: Good luck!!!

Did your Doc require a pre-op diet?

Mine is going to pretty much be the Atkins diet. My Doctor said, no carbs as much as I can. So I think I'll be fine. It will only last 10 days, so that is nice too.
  21. It want really well, he just went over everything. I have done a lot of research, so not much of it was new. I felt better after I talked with him. I have my consult with the nutritionist on monday. Looking forward to it. Thanks for asking about it!!!

    Ward or Branch?

I am in a good sized ward, but I feel like no one really cares about my hubby and I. Well, besides the Bishop and RS Pres. I do have a VT that was really good about coming over, but I haven't seen her in a couple of months now. But to be fair not many people know us because we can't usually stay the whole time. Hubby has really bad chronic knee problems and cannot sit on the church chairs for very long. Sometimes we even sit out on the couches to see if it is more comfy for him. I have thought and prayed a lot about what to do and I feel that my place is to help my husband not feel too bad about leaving church early. Also we visit in his parents ward and try to keep his younger brothers going to church. We've discussed all this with Bishop and he knows everything about our situation. He has knee problems too and his knees are about halfway to where my husbands are and he is at least 30 yrs younger than Bishop! Wow, just realized that was a lot to say that I am not in a small branch. I do prefer them, because people do know you and care. Anyway, guess I just needed to let some of this out so I could remind myself that we are doing ok.

Anyone else close to being under 300lbs????

I have not been banded yet, but was thinking that I should try to lose some before my pre-op diet. I have 3 weeks. I am sitting at just about 307, I can totally do that right? I'd like to get to about 295 before surgery. The more I lose before helps right?

    Lap Band or Bypass?

Personally I felt that the LB would be the way to go. I like the idea of it being minimally invasive and has a shorter recovery time. you are right about people PB'ing and having problems with the band, but I have noticed that most of the time it is because of eating too fast, too much, or being too tight. I know that for some it doesn't seem to work at all, but I sure hope it works for me!! The Bypass procedure is VERY invasive. But for some people it works with no horrible side effects. I have seen both sides of it. My aunt had GB and started having troubles about a year after. She lost the weight, but now she is permanently on a feeding tube. My uncle (her husband) also had a GB about a year after she did, and is doing wonderfully. Like I said, I think it depends on the person, but please think long and hard about your decision and remember that a lap-band is completely reversable, and the Gastric Bypass is not.
