Changing facilities
over65 replied to MotivatedMomma's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I suspect you will have to do a bunch of paperwork to get surgery approved by different surgeon. It is possible that your new surgeon would have to resubmit everything your other surgeon submitted. I think they should accept everything you have done under previous surgeon but new surgeon would have to resubmit for approval. This depends a lot on whether your health insurance is through a PPO which requires you to use "network doctors". It could be worse and you have to start over. If you are already approved, you should have a good reason (in your opinion) to make such a change at this pointnin the process. You could call your insurance and ask them directly what happens if you are approved but you want to change doctors. Whether a different facility would need reapproval depends again on whether you arebin PPO. If you are in PPO and either your surgeon or facility is not in preferred network, will cost you money. Have you had your cholesterol checked. There is a case in journal about a young man (20s) who was exhausted all the time, could hardly crawl out of bed, had no energy. Turned out he had severe high cholesterol and diagnosis was starvation-induced high cholesterol. It is uncommon but does happen when a WLS patient maintains a low intake of food either due pouch size problems or development of an eating disorder afraid of regain. You should stay away from shakes at this point and figure out exactly how much real food you can eat before feeling full. If that amount is abnormally small at this point in your journey, you have a pouch problem. A barium swallow would show it. Another possibility is you have a severe malabsorption problem so matter how much you eat, your body doesn't receive the nourishment. Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app

The attachment I have has great control of spray and strength of spray to stream to bullseye. I use both front and back and never have any problem with spray from back to splash front due to precise aiming and angle it's used. Be warned. If there is more than one person using it, one will inevitably forget to turn off the spray button. Your bathroom will get a spray all over the walls unexpectedly when you turn on valve. So you need to establish a ritual in the specific order you do everything. And I myself have forgotten twice and gave my walls a spraydown. And if you have young children visit, almost guarnteed they will misuse it. Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app

I bought bidet sprayer attachment two years ago. Main reason was I could no longer reach my behind anymore. Haven't bought TP since. Was wonderful tool when prepping for colonoscopy. Europeans have the right idea. Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app

I came home from hospital yesterday morning less than 24 hours since surgery. The remainder of the day was not good. Pain and gas. Felt like I was kicked in belly by a horse. Gas was mostly in belly and just felt like a tight balloon. I was given Rx for chewable simethecone (GasX). I finally started big rumbling farts. Used a heating pad which helped alot. I got in my Water but very little Protein. Had a great night's sleep. This morning feeling much better with a lot less gas pain. Having broth with unflavored Protein Powder (tastes like cream of chicken soup) and very soothing. Tried Jello at the hospital and it was sickening sweet. Couldn't eat it. I prepared some protein jello day before surgery but haven't given it a try. Goal today is to get in both protein and water. I've dropped 5 pounds since surgery 2 days ago. I haven't had any problems swallowing and been sipping like baby bird, tiny amounts. Found a baby sippy cup without the sucking valve removed helps with small sips.

Flexeril works for moderate pain. But once home, I didn't even need pain med. Most pain is GAS. So Mylicon, walking and spirometer. That little toy they give you to avoid pneumonia. You have to blow the little ball up and hold it there as long as possible. I read that taking deep breath for blowing moves diaphragm down and helps move gas out. Add Genepro to Chicken Broth?
over65 replied to SJR20's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just run Water through my Keurig. Stir in buillion powder and then add cold broth to cool it and then stir in Protein powder. . I use low sodium premade broth for cold and keep in fridge. (nasty by itself. Needs salt) It only takes minutes to prepare so I wouldn't bother prepping it. -
Low B1 and High cholesterol - has this happened to you too?

Found a scientific paper of a case where a man in his 20s developed very high cholesterol after VSG. "Transient Severe Hypercholesterolemia Following Bariatric Surgery Treated Successfully With Increased food Intake" https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26732832/?from_term=hypercholesterolemia+after+weight+loss+surgery&from_pos=5 He was diagnosed with starvation-induced hypercholesterolemia. They increased his calories and in three months, cholesterol back to normal. The paper concluded "Although dietary management of failed weight loss after bariatric surgery is the main priority for health professionals, this case illustrates the possible harm of severe dietary restriction after surgery and the need for judicious dietary and nutritional management. ARE YOU GETTING ENOUGH CALORIES? Could be just need to increase intake a bit more. I hate it when doctors just write a prescription for a drug when if easy research they could discover the patient just needed a bit more food. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app -
I had VSG three days ago. The big surprise was my doctor told me to quit taking 2 of my blood pressure meds and my statin on discharge instructions. Thrilled about that. Am taking my BP regularly to be sure it doesn't get high again. So already reaping benefits from my weight loss presurgery. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app

Add Genepro to Chicken Broth?
over65 replied to SJR20's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I mix ISOPURE with chicken broth and really like it. I add one scoop (25g protein) to 8 ounces of a little more than warm broth. Any whey protein added to hot will lump up. If you are making in advance, are you going to drink cold or try to rewarm. I put my broth protein in insulated coffee cup with lid on tight and it stays warm over an hour. I tried drinking when not warm anymore and did not taste good. I rewarm cold protein broth by adding a few ounces of hot to the cool instead of zapping in microwave or on stovetop. Low B1 and High cholesterol - has this happened to you too?

Usually they don't start statins until cholesterol at 200. Most people with high cholesterol have it because their own body is making it as opposed to your diet. What was your LDL and HDL? The 190 is the sum of the two and could be less serious if your HDL is higher. HDL is "good cholesterol" and the higher the better. The ratio of LDL/HDL is more important than total cholesterol number. Statins can have serious side effects. Important to WLS patients, statins can make you gain weight. I wouldn't just take Lipitor because chosen by my doctor. Some doctors choose the same statin for all patients. There are statins with fewer side effects like simvastatin which I took for 25 years. I had VSG last week and was thrilled my doctor told me to quit my statin. If I were you, I would study the various statins and determine which best fits you. Then discuss with doctor. Lipitor is the most common statin prescribed but also has more serious side effects than others. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app -

Are 300 calories a day typical postop?
over65 replied to over65's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Amazes me that dietitians seem ignorant of Vit K2. I bet it is K1 in multivitamins so why they think deficiency is rare. One paper says MK-7 can be cleaved by body enzymes into MK-4 when needed so makes sense to take MK-7. Fermented soybeans (natto) major source in Japan. Impotant for deposit of calcium in bone. The following people are likely deficient in K2. -take antacids -menopausal -on statins -GI problems (IBS, diverticulitis) Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app -
I had covid test for colonoscopy two weeks before my surgery. I had to take it again for surgery. The second was the new type that just goes up nose a bit. Much better than the one that feels like going up into eyes. I think I am skewing my state's statistics. They have tested me 4 times preprocedure, all negative. Artificial sweetners just as bad as sugar
over65 replied to over65's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I think the big problem with artificial sweeteners is people think zero calories, have all you want. Some drink 10 diet cokes a day for example. I don't think people are overdoing artificial sweeteners with desserts, etc. Use natural sweeteners that do not raise blood sugar like Monk Juice and Allulose (new rare natural sugar). You take Vitamin K2 alone or with D3. So many formulas but from what I've read, Vit K1 is for clotting factors and K2 is for bone and hear health. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app -
About the only way you can get revision is serious GERD. But weight gain that soon after sleeve may indicate to some surgeons you aren't ready to undergo another procedure. Check with your bariatric center and see if what you are eating is contributing to weight gain. (are you back to old habits like soda, fast food, junk food, snacking, grazing, etc,). Also be aware that some medications can cause weight gain. Check any meds you take for weight gain as side effect. You need to figure out what is really going on before considering surgery again. With the restriction gone from sleeve, your weight now depends on you and see what you can do to fix problem. Getting regular exercise? Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app

When you calculate how much unflavored whey power you'd need to make your own, this is cheaper. ISOPURE Zero scoops have 25g protein per scoop. Genepro has 20g per scoop. Just the protein powder costs more than case of GELATEIN20. I am using mostly during my clear fluid stage where it is hard to drink enough water protein drinks. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app

I bought GELATEIN20 on Amazon for my clear stage. You get 20g protein in little 4 oz Jello cup. Really helps meet protein goals. Fruit Punch taste a little like kids couvh syrup but it isn't too sweet and easy for me to eat. I have yet to find anything that makes me nauseous so may be different for others. Things that Taste Like Peanut Butter
over65 replied to JessLess's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Bad artificial sweetener, maltitol and maltitol Syrup. Proven to raise blood sugar. Find something with sweetener that doesn't raise blood sugar. Rise in blood sugar releases insulin which then stores unused glucose in fat. Not good for WLS people. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Are 300 calories a day typical postop?

I have been faithfully taking one Bariatric Fusion Multivitamin, B12, Calcium/D3 and Biotin since day one as instructed by doctor in postop orders. Been a little confused about multivitamin. I take fusion chewable once a day according to discharge orders. But bariatric center in preop education said I needed to take 4 each day. Will double check on Monday on postop visit. One thing I don't like about fusion is they do not include Vitamin K. Will ask if I need to get separate Vit K. If I take Fusion 4x a day, I get 1200mg Calcium in addition to the 1200 mg I get from Calcium+D3. I think that is too much Calcium (2400 mg). Until Monday, I am taking just one Fusion a day which gives me 1500 mg Calcium. I already have early osteopenia in hips by bone density scan so Calcium/D3/Vit K are all necessary to rebuild lost bone. Recommded D3 for me is 4000 IU per day so I take additional two D3 2000 IU per day. I really don't like that I get no Vit K in FUSION. The company that makes FUSION told me the don't include Vit K because interacts with a few people on blood thinners and that deficiency of Vit K is "rare". Then why do ALL OTHER Multivitamins on the market (bariatric, OTC and kids) all include Vitamin K? I am not believing I don't need Vit K supplement. But will wait to see doctor before I add Vit K supplement. -
Artificial sweetners just as bad as sugar

I would guess that maltitol and xylitol could cause dumping, They both raise blood glucose while others don't. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Watched YouTube where two people tested all sweetners taking 2 tbls sweetness equivalent first thing in the morning, one sweetner a day. They measured blood sugar and ketones before eating sweetner and then retested 30 minutes later to see if blood sugar was elevated (elevation of blood sugar will cause insulin secretion). These are keto people but results were identical between the two. SWEETNERS NOT EFFECTING Blood Sugar Monk Fruit Erythritol (caused bad GI symptoms) Stevia Allulose (bad GI symptoms) Sucralose (not Splenda which has additions) Aspertame BAD SWEETNERS (raised Xylitol (GI discomfort), used in gum Cane sugar Maltitol (used in Atkins bars, ONE bars) Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app

Depends on artificial sweetner used in gum. Aspertame causes insulin reaction and will make you hungry. Chewing gum also produces a lot of saliva which you swallow. Early after surgery, you don't have room to spare. You need fluids and protein. Sent from my SM-T580 using BariatricPal mobile app
