    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Hi everyone, I must be the last one in the group to get the surgery done on 11/30. Next day after surgery is over and now trying to sleep. Pain wise it is manageable but still uncomfortable. On Tylenol for it. I hope in couple of days, I can in painless. Waiting on the day. Eating wise, not hungry. So it gets difficult to simply drown in fluids, but unfortunately gotta stay hydrated. Anyhow, I hope everyone is getting better by the day : )
  2. So I do understand post the surgery, we are asked to eat 6 meals a day - Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and 3 snacks. I would think this is definitely important may be in the first year Post Op, but do you have to follow 6 meals lifestyle throughout the life? Or does it get little lenient as years go by?

    Gastric Bypass Yesterday

Congratulations. I am getting my procedure done tomorrow. Kinda feeling jittery and a little anxious. But hoping things go well and I can come out here and post a similar story. Good Luck with your remaining journey.

    This surgery is bullshit...

That's disappointing and quite unfortunate. I hope you can follow some of the given advice from here and turn things around. Wish you all the best.
  5. Didn't cancel cuz I didn't want to go through with it but I did cancel a week into my Pre-Op diet because I was in the middle of my semester. I realized I wouldn't be able to manage both so now finally going through the procedure in my break time. And definitely sounds like a panic ridden cancellation. May be you can reevaluate why you wanted this procedure and what is stopping you from getting it - Like your fears and hesitations. Hope you can find a way through it and make the best possible decision for yourself.

    Other Protein Alternatives

So the program I am doing doesn't really want us to use protein powder except for unusual circumstances. We are supposed to get our protein from natural food sources - Something to boost protein - *milk powder, peanut butter powder* can be used. Rest need to come from cottage cheese, cheese, tofu, Oats, milk, lentils etc. Well that's for vegetarians, which I am. Non-Vegetatians have more options with meat and chicken. So I am sure dialy protein need can come from various food sources than having to use protein powders.

    Anyone else terrified?

Server as in?! Gmail definitely has that option. I would assume other email portals should too.

    Anyone else terrified?

Yes definitely it is indeed very terrifying. I am not really scared of dying per se, but more scared for my family and how they would manage if something goes wrong. Though worst case scenario is death but then again when I think about it as an obese person who has struggled with her weight half of her life and the fact that I haven't even *lived* my life to the fullest till now, so what's the most I can lose from the surgery anyways. All I have is to gain from this little risk. With that mindset, I am going all in and hoping for the best. Though I have written emails to my family and friends and have send them as *scheduled email* 1 week after the surgery date just in case I may not have the opportunity to do so. Just so they know how much I have love them and that there has been 0 regrets from my end for opting for this surgery. It may lessen their guilt in case something unfortunate happens. Besides that, I will go in with an optimist mindset and will hope to concur this little battle.

    Start Pre-Op Diet Early?

I would say it's fine if you want to get the hang of things and may be want to lose little more weight. My surgery got postponed twice and both times I was on Pre-Op diet unfortunately. First time, I did it for 1 week and second time it was for 10 days. And finally I am yet again on my Pre-Op diet for 10 days with today being day 6. So I would say it's fine as long as you have it in you to keep going. Though I would recommend you enjoy this very last week before you have to take the plunge for 2 weeks straight. It may get difficult then and you may regret not utilizing a week before your Pre-Op diet to indulge in your favorite foods.

    Before and After Pics

You look amazing. You also don't seem to have a lot of loose skin. Congrats for achieving your goal. Do you have a before pic for comparison? Also would love to learn of your physical activity/exercise routine whenever you have time to share.
  13. My first consult was in Oct 2019 and I am finally getting my surgery now Nov, 2021! 🤣 So yeh, I have had to wait a while too. Usual wait in Canada isn't that long, may be 6 months to max a year. But because of COVID, it kept getting delayed. I got my very first date for May 2021, but they had to cancel it ala COVID. Then it was June, 2021. Again, cancelled. Finally got it for September, 2021 but I was already in school and it would have been difficult to handle surgery and full course load with tons of group work and back to back assignments/exams. So had to postpone it, delay yet again. And finally for the FOURTH time, here I am getting ready for the surgery, Nov 16th 2021 and on the pre-Op diet 🤣🤣🤣 So don't get discouraged. Things happen when they are bound to happen and when it's the right time for you. Keep your spirits high and hope for the best. It'll pass and there will be a light at the end of the tunnel!

    Studying or Reading post Surgery

I was hesitant because I felt bad booking the slot of surgery and cancelling it almost a week before. But my Surgeon's secretary was very understanding when I spoke to her. She suggested same how it'll be difficult to manage both and if anything happens Post Op, it'll be a nightmare managing school and corresponding to professors and fellow colleagues. Plus they have a cancellation list for other surgeries my Surgeon performs so they'll be able to book someone else in my slot. So I am glad I at least spoke to her and took my chance. It all worked out fine. As for diet, I was already on the pre-Op diet. Finished 8 days on it already. Initial few days were difficult. After day 3 or 4, it got easier. I used to get bad cravings in first 3-4 days but now they have subsided. So I am planning to continue on the same rhythm and stick to *high protein low carb* diet till the surgery. I am hoping I'll be little lighter by then. What I was gonna lose after surgery, I am hoping I'll lose without it till my surgery date in Nov. Ad yes stress eating can be challenging. But I was managing fine last few days when I was head down in my readings and liquid diet. So I am hoping the busy lifestyle will help ease the stress eating with the cravings that have subsided. Thank you for your advise, I'll definitely keep it in mind if I stumble. 🤗🤗

    Studying or Reading post Surgery

And I got chickened out and got my surgery moved to November. All this happened cuz of Covid. I was booked initially way before my school work started in May. But unfortunately it got cancelled twice and I landed in Sept, 2 weeks into my program. My school work has numerous assignments and every course has group work submissions (full time 5 courses), so tons of zoom meetings back and forth. Ater contemplating, I finally spoke to the clinic and they were able to move me in November when my semester ends. My new semester starts in January. New surgery date is 16th of Nov. So I'll have ample of time to focus on the recovery. If I hadn't done this, I wouldn't have been able to give my 100% to either of the side. So thank you all of you for responding here so I could the grasp my post Op recovery and what entails. Now I am way less stressed. I was literally freaking out last few days. So thank you again for helping me take this decision. 🤗🤗

    Studying or Reading post Surgery

Thank you all for replying. Let's see how it goes. So far I am trying to finish all my readings and assignments that have deadline around my surgery date. I have also notified my professors, so even if I do fall behind, they are already aware and accommodate my circumstances to make it up later on. Only thing I am concerned is about the group work. I don't wanna be the person who falls behind with her contribution. 😂 I'll prioritize group work before individual work since individual work can be managed by getting extensions from the respective professor.

    September Surgery Buddies!!

Yeh on 4 shakes a day, even Broth sounds tempting 😂😂 Well not many stories, may be 1 or 2 where 1 surgeon refused to operate and closed up and another I read on another site where someone's liver got cracked cuz she cheated her pre Op diet (But the cheating must have been hardcore for it to affect that dramatically). Otherwise mostly it's all done well!
  19. So it's day 7 of my Pre-Op diet and constipation is an issue. I am on Optifast liquid diet 4x a day. Have broth, decaf coffee (cup a day) and ofc water. I also include fiber in my drink, but it doesn't seem to help. Now they do recommend using RestoraLax. I took it 3 days back but hasn't helped much. Any suggestions? Should I be taking RestoraLax everyday?

    September Surgery Buddies!!

I know right. I don't know why we can't have a bit of flexibility while on 2 weeks of liquid. I don't know how those on 4 weeks do it, it is a struggle definitely. I don't have much of a sweet tooth but I definitely crave something spicy or savory. Even 1 bite with my shake and I would feel at ease. But I get scared reading few of the horror stories who cheated during their pre-Op Diet. I feel surgeons know we might slip once or twice, may be that's why they don't let us have the flexibility such that even if we slip, it can be balance with other days of strict liquid diet.

    Pre-Op Diet and Constipation

I remember reading how taking Miralax or RestoraLax can make your bowel dependent on it. Is the doctor concerned with you taking it daily? Or is it their recommendation? Are you aware how long would I have to take post surgery to get them the bowel back to normal? So for now I guess, I should take 1 cup every day till surgery for my bowel to function.

    September Surgery Buddies!!

You're basically on a liver shrink diet for a week?! You seem to have various options to get you through. I am sure you'll be fine. 1 week will buzz through.

    September Surgery Buddies!!

Mine is scheduled for September 7th - RNY. I am on Day 5 of my PreOp diet and includes 4 shakes a day (Optifast). I am allowed Veggie Broth, Decaf Tea or Coffee and flavored water if needed.

    September date!

Wow a fellow Virgo I finally got mine too, Sept 7th (few days before my Birthday) after being cancelled twice thanks to Covid lockdown. Hopefully this is for the last time *finger crossed* Also a fellow Bypass-er!
  25. My program doesn't want me to use straws. But I love straws and I think I can manage my sips better with straws! But then some videos by bariatric surgeons on YT and feedbacks by WLS candidates mention "they use straws just fine" - So I am kinda confused why such drastic take on straws?! Has anyone of you guys used straws throughout their journey? Any issue while using straws? I am really looking for some feedback here. I rather continue using straws, it simply makes it a better tool for sipping at least for me!
