Today is July 18, 2008 and it has been almost two months since I had my Lap Band Surgery. I have to admit that the first few weeks after surgery were pretty rough. I was in pain and couldn't not find a comfortable way to sit, sleep, do anything. Once that went away, I would say by about the middle - end of June I was in good spirits and feeling much better. I have not had any problems with my diet at all. I did the liquid after surgery diet and then the mashed foods and by the end of June I was eating regular food with almost no problems at all. Of course I am eating a quarter of what I used to eat in portion size. When I went for my 6 week post surgery doc appt he said I was exceeding the norm for weight loss and did not need a fill yet. I went back yesterday, July 17 and had my first fill. I have lost a total of 30 lbs since I started the liquid diet 2 weeks before surgery. The fill did not hurt, however, I was very uncomfortable after and can only do liquids. Later on today I am going to try some mashed foods and see how that goes. I hope this feeling doesn't last long. Overall I am feeling pretty good, my back no longer hurts like it used to and I can run around and play with my now 17 month old son! The lap band surgery was definitely a great decision for me!

Hi there The first step to take is to talk to your doctor and see if he/she thinks lap band surgery is an option for you. I started the process in January of 2008 by going to one of my surgeon's seminars. At the seminar they will tell you the entire process and depending on your insurance there may be certain things you need to do to qualify for lap band surgery. You can also do alot of research at lapband.com. What is PCOS?? Keep reading the posts on here, that has been a tremndous help to me, I wish I had joined before the surgery then I would have had a better idea of what was going to happen. Feel free to ask any other questions, I'd be glad to help if I can.

I had a little bit of ice cream too, so don't feel too bad about it. It's a treat that is easy to go down! Just think while everyone else was having their cookouts and eating their hearts out we were sipping on drinks! A little icecream isn't bad! LOL Happy belated birthday!

Glad you are feeling better. That has been my problem, being weak and tired and just plain old uncomfortable. Today I feel a little better but still tired as I did not sleep well. I go for my post-op appt tomorrow. I am hoping I can start the mashed foods cuz the liquid diet is getting a little old! Have you tried anything other than liquids yet? I am kind of nervous about trying it. As far as the car goes, I tried going out one day for a ride and the bumps in the road killed me! I guess I can understand why they don't want us to drive. Hope your appt goes great and you are getting all the rest you need this week!

My doc told me 2-4 weeks out. Why do you have to go back to work so soon? I had my surgery on the same day as you and I am feeling better but still painful on the port side and the center incision. Hope you start to feel better soon.

I love Dale Jr. too! I was so bummed last night, I thought for sure he was gonna have himself a win!

HI all My name is Nikki. I just had my lap band surgery on May 20th. Still recovering for the most part. Wow is my abdomen sore. I am more sore after this surgery than I was after my c-section! I am very new to this forum and not even really sure how the whole thing works but thought I would give it a try. It's always good to talk to people that are going through the same thing as you. :rolleyes2:

Yeah! Another Nascar fan!!! Who's your fav driver?

I don't feel like getting out either. I am extremely tired still. Not sure if that's the meds or lack of food. I am feeling a little better but still very sore. The liquid bandage/glue they put on over the incisions is starting to come off and one of the incisions opened a little but quickly closed itself back up. I was a little nervous there for a minute! Do you feel any pain when you drink the liquids? Mine's not rally pain but a lot of tightness when I drink something as my meal. How long did your doc tell you to stay on liquids before going to mashed foods? I am excited about this new life as well. I miss eating the things I love but I know in time I will be able too just in much smaller portions!

Lap Band Surgery Day Stories
Braysmom replied to pennyt's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had my lap band surgery on May 20th. I was told to arrive at the hospital at 11:45. I waited in admission for nearly an hour before they had room for me in pre-op. Once in pre-op they had me change, took blood, started my iv and got my first Heprin shot. I was a little nervous but not a whole lot. More like a little irritated from waiting in admission for so long. At 2:30 they came in to take me to the OR. The last thing I remember was being wheeled in there, them putting the "good stuff" in my iv and having me spread my arms out. I thought to myself hey this is just like how I was when I had the c-section. When I woke up in the recovery room the clock said 4:10 pm. I woke up in terrible pain, in what I thought was an odd place. I had pain at the bottom of my breastbone like in between my ribs. I looked there was no incision there so I mentioned to the nurse that I was in pain in that area and she replied " weel, yeah you just had surgery". Nice huh. So I laid there, this nasty nurse came over a few times to write things in my chart but never said a word to me. I asked her what time I arrive in recovery and she said 3:25. So my surgery wasn't even an hour long. Now here's the really bad part. I was stuck in recovery until 7:30 pm. Apparently they didn't have a bed for me. A nurse brought me some ice chips and left them with me. All the other patients that had been in recvoery were now gone. The nurses where walking around eating their dinners. No one was talking to me or even checking on me. Finally the nurse comes over and says she's leaving for the night and someone else would be checking on me. At 6 pm they said they had a room ready for me and were just cleaning it so it would be about 6: 20. I felt a small sigh of relief. I knew that if it was much later my son who is 15 months would not have been able to see me or more like it was I wasn't going to see him. That was hard for me since I have never been away from him over night since he was born. At 7:00 I asked again and the nurse told me they have a room, they just need to clean it. I was getting so irritated and upset. Finally at 7:20 someone came down to wheel me up to my room. As they were bringing me into the room there was someone in there still cleaning the floor so we had to wait. But out of the corner of my eye I see my little boy. My boyfriend and my mother had brought him to see me even though it was past his bedtime. I was all smiles. Finally I was in my room at 7:30. The rest of my stay at the hospital was pretty good. I had to stay overnight since my surgery was so late in the day. I didn't sleep too well as I could not get comfortable and had a roommate that talked really loudly in her sleep, snored and insisted the lights be left on. I got to watch a lot of late night tv. lol The next morning I was told that as soon as I had the upper GI and everything was ok I could leave. They suggested I not have anything to drink after 5:30 am so they could easily do the upper GI usually around 7 am. I didn't get taken down for the upper GI until 11:00 am. And then it took them 2 more hours to read it and clear me to go home. So by 2:30 I was finally home. I found out that the surgeon was supposed to call my family right after surgery to let them know I was in recovery and he enver did. He called them at 6:30 pm. 4 hours after I went in to surgery. My mother had been frantic calling trying to get info and no one would put here through to the recovery room. Finally at 7:00 they told her when she called that I was heading to a room in 20 minutes so they came up. She was a mess. I was pretty irrate too. My poor family was worried to death about what was going on. When I talked to the PA about it he said well the doc must have forgotten. Nice huh!! Well that's my story. I beleive the surgery went great it was all the other little things that made it a bad experience. I am thankful for being home now and doing a little better every day. -
HI Nikki How did it go when you first started eating real food again? Has it been hard for you to not see any results right now? I think that will be hard thing for me but hopefully with all the support I will be able to deal with it. Portions was always my biggest problem so hopefully. I have only lost a little so far and like you said that was the liquid diet. I am glad you are feeling great. That is encouraging.

They sent me home with Percotte.

Yes the port side is definitely the sorest part. I am starting to feel a little better. How are you sleeping at night? I have been having a tough time since I always slept on my side and can't do that yet. Are you having any difficulties with drinking all the liquids?
-
Thank you for the well wishes. Best of luck to you!!!!

Wow that is kinda freaky! Congrats on not having much pain at all. That is great. How are you feeling now? Eating normal foods? Would you say it has been worth it? I am trying to do some walking. Right now I think my biggest difficulty is not being able to pick up my son. He cries for me and I cannot pick him up. That part really sucks. I had terrible gas pains the first two days after but those are gone now. I do feel weak and tired but I am sure as time goes on that will get better to. Did you have to do the 2 weeks liquid diet before surgery?
-
When I mentioned it to the nurse she said it would be a little more painful than a c-section because you use all the muscles in your abdomen to do just about everything and where they cut you for the c-section is down lower. I was up and about as soon as I could feel my legs after the c-section. With this it hurts just moving around, lying, sitting. But it is getting better and I am sure every day it will continue to get better. In the end it will all be well worth it. Good luck to you.

I started my lap band journey in Janaury 2008 by attending a seminar presented by Dr. Carlos Barba. My decision to start the journey was primarily based on what my weight was doing to my body. After my son was born in Feb 07 I developed major problems with my back, a herniated disk. They also said I was borderline diabetic. The doc suggested that weight loss would make it better. It has been hard for me to get around and even do simple things like playing on the floor with my son. I guess you can say that he has been my greatest motivation through all of this. I have been on several different diets throughout my life and they all worked, for a little while at least. But you always gain back more than you lost. So I very hesitantly started on my lap band journey, not sure if it was really something I could do. After talking with the surgeon and going though all those appts and doing hours of research on line I finally felt comfortable in my decision. I started the liquid diet on May 6th at 262 lbs. I went in to surgery on May 20th at 253 and as of May 23 I was 249. In all honesty, I think the hardest part for me has been not being able to pick up my son. When I came home from the hospital he was sick with a high fever and I could do nothing for him. It really got to me. As of today I am feeling a little better but still very sore and getting around slowly. Sleeping has been a challenge since I am a side sleeper and that is not comfortable to do at this point. I hope that goes away soon. I guess that's all for now. I am looking forward to a new healthier life and lots and lots of fun with my son!
