Hi all. Just looking for advice. I will be 18 months post-op from gastric bypass and maintaining around 180. I am looking to get pregnant soon. I got back in touch with my program and PCP and they all seem a little clueless about what I need to do to have a successful pregnancy. Can anyone who had a healthy pregnant post RNY share their vitamin regime? Anything else you did that was different than a non weight loss surgery pregnancy??

Hi all! I am 18 months post gastric bypass. The experience has been great and I have not had any complications. My biggest issue is reactive hypoglycemia. When I eat too much sugar and/or carbs, my blood sugar tanks about an hour after. Does anyone else struggle with this? Any tips or tricks to better manage? I know it is completely diet related.

With Kaiser we have no contact with our surgeon after we are two weeks out from surgery. We are only seen from then on by our PCP and the dietician. That’s why I am reaching out here. My PCP has no experience treating RNY patients.

Do you have much heartburn after bypass?
KayLow42 replied to Katja's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
None here, 18 months post op RNY. My husband had the sleeve and he has significant acid reflux. -
Hello all! Hoping you can give some advice. I am 5 months post-op from gastric bypass. I regularly meet or exceed my protein and water goals (70 ounces protein and 50 ounces water) and am semi-active, but am still dealing with bad constipation. I was taking miralax daily and that was helping but I had right side pain constantly and when I stopped the miralax the side pain stopped as well. Welllllll- I definitely should have replaced the miralax with something because I landed in the ER today for fecal compaction. I’ve tried smooth move and love it but it gives me stomach cramping when going. Also have tried docusate. My questions for you are: 1. Has anyone experienced right abdominal/side pain with consistently taking miralax? If so- any way to still take it without the pain? 2. Has anyone found success to help have normal bowel movements with anything other than above? I meet with my PCP next week but she is so hesitant to do anything for me or offer any advice I want to go to the appointment with a plan of action. Thank you in advance!

Pre-Surgery Advice: What do you wish you knew?
KayLow42 replied to Rachel98's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I read this comment and didn’t realize until I read this that this is my same scenario. I was very scared and when I went into the surgery and during recovery and the first three months I was depressed and had given up everything I had ever eaten. But slowly I have tried things and realized that I can have almost everything I had pre surgery. Which for some people (as I’ve read) can’t but I am thankful I can as I am aiming to live a balanced life and have a healthy relationship with food. I have found that because I can have all food I have started counseling to deal with my food issues because now, more than ever, I need to learn how to have a balanced and healthy relationship. But knowing I HAVE to hit a protein and water goal has been very nice in helping me. Thanks for writing this reply! I am glad to know other people feel this way in that all the research and horror stories do not happen to everyone and that you can live a balanced life with gastric bypass. -
Pre-Surgery Advice: What do you wish you knew?
KayLow42 replied to Rachel98's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Take the pre-op time very seriously to learn and practice. Make sure to address your food issues before you have surgery to make sure you can overcome them. Just take the pre-op seriously and do the work. It will make post-op work so much easier. -
How to get my PCP to referral me for weight loss surgery.
KayLow42 replied to marti33m's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My PCP would not refer me either. I was “healthy” and young and just fit the criteria barely. I told her that I needed support and that the bariatric program I was joining could give me services to help in my weight loss that I needed. I told her I’d try the program out for the other benefits and come back to her before my surgery and discuss if it was the right decision if I wanted to do it. I knew all along I was going to do it and never went back to her- maybe I should have because I told her I would but I really dislike my PCP so I didn’t mind. -
Let’s participate in Face to Face Friday! Here is one of me. Left is 60 lbs ago and right is today! I am two months out from gastric bypass.

Molina Healthcare/ Washington Apple Health

My husband had weight loss surgery in Portland with OWL. We lived two hours south at the time. He had to drive up many times to do it. They also do not give adequate pre-surgery counseling or follow-up. I would not recommend them because of this. The surgeon is great and the process moves quickly, but compared to my program, they did not provide adequate pre surgery education which has led to his surgery and efforts being less successful than mine. -
Hello! I am currently in my 5th week post gastric bypass. My question is when did you all eat a protein bar? What ones were you able to tolerate and taste good? I will Be traveling to Europe around week 11 and I want to bring something that I know I can eat.

Oh my gosh, I am so sorry to hear this. I can imagine that you are just ready to get back to any sense of normalcy. Complications are so hard and this sounds very extreme. I hope you find some normalcy soon 🙏🏽

Do you remember how far out from surgery you were when you first tried one!

I am two weeks out from gastric bypass. All was going well but on Tuesday I woke up with some intense lower abdominal pain when attempting a BM. An hour and a half later and many solid BM later, the pain went away. I called my doctor and went back to liquids. My nutritionist thought I had eaten something my stomach didn’t agree with and the pain had subsided. Did liquids for 24 hours and all is back to normal. Fast forward to Friday morning, same thing is happening right now. Intense lower abdominal pain when having a BM. I do not think it was something I ate because the last time I ate was a protein shake 12 hours ago. My stomach is gurgling too. Anyone else have a similar problem? Advice?

Stomach Pain Question
KayLow42 replied to KayLow42's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
We figured out it was actually my vitamins! I was taking bariatric fusion chewable 4x per day and I had recently started an additional D3 and iron supplement. Posting so if anyone searches for something similar they can see this. -
Stomach Pain Question
KayLow42 replied to KayLow42's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well the pain is in my lower abdomen. My stomach sits up higher I believe so I don’t know if it is hunger :/ -
I am 2.5 weeks post RXH. i Had my first negative experience today. Last night I ate a piece of sharp white cheddar cheese. All was fine and no pouch issues. Went to sleep and woke up several times nauseous. Woke up this morning and all was fine. Drove into work eating a yogurt. About an hour after work I had the worst stomach pain and could not get off the toilet, although BM were solid. Had to come home from work to rest. I didn’t vomit or even feel like I would just horrid stomach ache and lots of BM’s. ALL OVER A PIECE OF CHEESE!!! Went back on clear liquids today and will try again tomorrow.

Check your body for rashes. I got an entire abdomen rash after because I ended up being allergic to the surgical glue they used.

Wound care for bypass 12/27 - when did you remove all the bandages?
KayLow42 replied to lisasamples's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was instructed to pull off the outer bandage on day 3. Then the little sticky bandages that were over the incisions would fall off around 1-2 weeks post op. I am 12 days post op and have three left to fall off. -
Oh no! What does the stitch feel like? Does your hunger feel the same as before?

I’m so glad everyone is doing great!

The day of surgery and the day after surgery were difficult due to the gas pain. The gas pain was so so so bad and the only thing that helped me was to walk. I begged for some gasX and they gave me some, but it didn’t work. The narcotic pain medicine did not work either. The only thing was walking and that’s the last thing I wanted to do. I stayed in the hospital for two nights which was required for my program. I stopped taking pain meds the day I got out of the hospital and have had zero pain since. I’m post op day 7 now and feeling pretty good.

Hi all! Merry Xmas Eve if you celebrate. I had my gastric bypass on 12/20. My follow up material clearly states I can have sugar free pudding and yogurt 2-3 days after surgery. I am petrified to try anything other than the shakes water and broth. Can you provide insight on when you tried new foods and what was the worst reaction you had? All of my material seems to have not been cohesive and it seems all I talk to in my program have different guidelines to follow, so I’m nervous!
