  1. My big mouth husband has been telling EVERYONE. I told my immediate family and my best friend who had gastric bypass 12 years ago. She had started putting weight back on and I have given her an incentive to get back with her weight loss efforts. I am luckier in that I am retired but once get near my weight goal, I plan on visiting friends at the work place from which I retired.

    OOTD

I have owned this shirt for 10 years and it has always been too tight for me to wear. Today is the first day I was able to wear it! Lol, but I forgot the Patriots played on Thursday night (sacrilege!) so I put it away until Monday’s game.

    Gastric bypass or sleeve

I have a girlfriend who had gastric bypass 12 years ago. She was at 450 pounds, got down to 200 but has since gone back up to 250. I had another friend and cousin who had the bypass too and they also have put the weight back on. I was a medical biller for 25 years and thoroughly researched all three options before choosing the sleeve. I had my surgery on 8/21/19. My starting weight was 315 pounds. In the two years prior to my surgery, I managed to lose 35 pounds on my own with diet and exercise but it took two years. The two weeks of liquid diet before and after my surgery quick started my weight loss. On the morning of my surgery, I weighed in at 280. They had me up and walking two hours after my surgery. I was given one dose of Tylenol after my surgery and never needed any other type of pain med. It is absolutely wonderful to not be able to finish half of what was a regular meal for me. As if today, I weighed in at 237. All I can say is that the sleeve has been a godsend for me.

    Hair loss

Yes. I was notified by my nutritionist that this would happen between 3 and 6 months but not to panic as it does not damage the follicle and the hair will grow back. That’s why getting lots of protein is important. I already had baby fine hair that was growing thin so I ordered and began taking a Biotin supplement. My hair loss has been minimal but I am having trouble with my fingernails. All I have to do is barely touch something and they break so I am just keeping them short.
  5. I had my surgery on 8/21. I have lost 40 pounds since then. I had lost 35 pounds from my highest weight during the months before my surgery. My clothes are swimming on me. Fortunately I had two pairs of jeans that arrived too small at the time as they fit me beautifully now. I have four blouses that I never wore because they were too tight that I wear now. I am trying to hold off on buying new clothes. It’s hard not to get impatient and I keep reminding myself to be patient and stick to eating right and exercising.
  6. My surgery was on 8/21/19. From 2/18 until my pre-op appointment, I lost 35 pounds on my own through eating right abs exercise. There were a lot of ups and downs but I still managed 35 pounds gone in my own. My PCP, asked if I was sure I wanted to go through with the surgery. I would not be dissuaded! I was 280 pounds at my pre-op, the day before I started my liquid diet. My WeightLoss has slowed but as of this morning, I am down to 239. I cannot even remember the last time my weight was that low. My PCP has cut my blood pressure meds because my blood pressure has come down so drastically. My hubby is complaining about how much energy I have. We live in a very rural area and have to drive three hours to Vegas or five hours to Phoenix for the surgery. Based on my success my PCP referred another of his patients to where I went for my surgery. This hasn’t been easy but it has been so worth it!
  7. I can really appreciate your situation. In the 28 months prior to my surgery, I managed to lose 35 pounds on my own through diet and exercise, steady but oh so slow. On 8/21/29 I had my gastric sleeve surgery and have lost 36 pounds in a month! Fortunately for me, I live in a very rural area and so always ordered my clothes online. I had a bad habit of not returning clothes that were too tight. They would get shoved to the back of the closet. I found two pairs of jeans and a half dozen blouses that are brand new and fit me perfectly now! I am really trying to hold off buying any new clothes until I get closer to my goal weight before buying any new clothes. This may seem silly to others but I am breathless with anticipation to see something in a local department store and be able to buy it right there in the store.
  8. I was running behind schedule and was afraid I was going to be late to my post op appointment. I arrived five minutes before my appointment. I advised the medical assistant that my blood pressure was probably goin g to be through the roof. She took my blood pressure and it was 103/71. I have never, ever had a blood pressure reading that low. I am on three blood pressure medications. I have been monitoring my BP all week and they are consistently in the one hundred over high sixties or low seventies. I had heard that many people stopped meds after surgery but I was never expecting it to happen so fast. I had anticipated having my surgery in February but some unforeseen circumstances caused me to have to wait and I did not have my surgery until August 19th. My last visit with my PCP I had managed to lose 27 pounds. At my pre-op appointment had managed to lose another 8 pounds. Then with the two weeks of pre-surgical liquid diet and the two weeks of post surgical liquid diet, I have lost a total of 67 pounds. I haven't been this light in at least 25 years! Today for the first time since my surgery, I was able to ride my recumbent bike for a full thirty minutes. It is amazing to me that I feel so wonderful after such a short recovery period.
  9. marlindiaz, I also had my gastric sleeve on the 21st. I have to keep reminding myself that had surgery. Admittedly the liquid diet after the surgery seems to be much easier than the two weeks before the surgery. I am amazed at how well I feel. I have a bad back and so walking is difficult but I have a recumbent bike and have started riding it for five minute intervals three times a day. LOL, I was notified that I should start on solid, chewable food on Tuesday and I am nervous!
  10. I had my gastric sleeve 08/21/19. I went to my first post-op yesterday. Sometimes I have to remind myself that I have had the surgery. Yesterday at my post-op, I had the lowest blood pressure reading I have ever had in my life! I was able to meet up with the young woman who was in the bed next to me in the pre-op area of the hospital. She seemed to be doing just as well as I was feeling. I start on solid food next Tuesday. I have been losing weight so quickly on the liquid diet which has been quite thrilling. I am feeling a little nervous about starting on solid food again but know it is just the next step forward on this adventure.
  11. Today I was experimenting with my morning shake and it came out so smooth and rich, it was as sweet and decadent as any fast food shake I have ever eaten that I thought I would share . First the statistics: 295 Calories 3 Grams Fat 37 Grams Protein 27 Grams Carbs Ingredients : 1 scoop milk chocolate shake mix 1/2 cup skim milk 1/2 cup plain yogurt 1 scoop Isopure Unflavored Protein Mix and 1/2 cup Ice. Blend together in your blender. I had mine between 8 am and 10 am (it makes 16 ounces so it takes awhile to get it all down) but haven't been hungry all day. I have been sipping on the Isopure Infusions throughout the day, striving to get 8 ounces down every hour. I cannot believe how good I am feeling so soon after my surgery. I also wan ted to let you all know how glad I am that I found this website and how much I appreciate the postings from you all.

    What’s your favorite protein shake

I AM WITH 28SMALLER18. I like the Fairlife Core Power shakes but I definitely have to add skim milk. I love chocolate but theirs is potent.

    Non Scale Victories

I had two pairs of jeggings I ordered online and when they arrived were way too tight so I hung them at the back of the closet. My regularly worn jeggings have become increasingly loose so I pulled the new jeggings out and they fit perfectly.

    Post op foods help please

Isopure has a protein infusion in different fruit flavors. You add it to your water and then shake it. It is cloudy while you are shaking it but once it clears, it tastes pretty close to Crystal Light. I am drinking the Mixed Berry flavor. I bought some popsicle molds and filled them with the Isopure infusions. Fairlife has protein shakes that are 14 ounces that have been a godsend. When I got a hunger pain, I would drink half a bottle and that seemed to help quite a bit. There is a product, Sans Sucre Mousse mixes. I make it with skim milk. The mix provides 3 gm of protein and the skim milk adds 9 grams. For my broths, I bought chicken, beef and turkey broth bases. I added whole carrots and celery stalks cut in half and a whole chicken. After it was done, I pulled out the chicken and the vegetables and froze them, leaving me with a very savory broth. Needless to say, sugar free pudding and jello have helped a lot. My doctor allowed only one pudding per day but that was really all I needed. Surprisingly, my hubby eating in front of me hasn't bothered me nearly as much as I thought it would. The only truly rough time was when he cooked bacon for BLTs for our daughter who was visiting and himself. But as Gloria Gaynor sang, "I Will Survive".
  15. Congratulations on your pending surgery. I had my GSV last Wednesday. I am 67. I always swore that I would NEVER get over 300 pounds. Three times in my life, I have lost 75 pounds on my own. But unless I maintained a rigorous exercise regiment and a super strict diet, the weight would slowly come back. Then about 18 months ago I got on the scale and weighed in at 315! That was it for me. I have 3 ruptured discs in the lumbar region of my back and so cannot walk or stand for any length of time. I began by really truly using my Fitbit. I began to keep a food diary, entering my water intake, and logging my exercise. I have a recumbent bike and started riding five to seven times a week, starting for ten minutes and then adding five minutes every two weeks until I could ride for thirty minutes. at 13 to 14 MPH. I created a playlist of high energy songs (the kind that makes your feet move). Then sitting on a chair and moving my legs and arms to the beat of the music for 30 to 60 minutes a day. It probably doesn't sound like that would work but it does. My heart rate averaged about 115 beats and often reach 150 and the swear poured off of me. I usually lifted my two pound weights for fifty times before I started chair dancing, fifteen minutes after stating my chair dancing and after I finished my chair dancing. I could not imagine myself successfully sticking to a liquid diet for two weeks but I did and I continued with my exercise program. On August 21, 2019 as I was bei8ng prepped for surgery I weighed in at 262 pounds! We were advised by my surgeon's PA-C that we would vomit at least once after the surgery. However, I HATE vomiting so I have been very careful about how quickly I ingest my continuing liquid diet. To date, I have yet had to do that which I hate. I just concentrate on eating and drinking s l o w. The nutritionist recommended Isopure unflavored protein to add to broth so I bought some (I live in a very rural area so I rely on Amazon). Isopure also has a flavored protein that you can add to water and I bought that in Mixed Berry and that has proven to make staying on the liquid diet relatively painless. Now, for a treat I found on Amazon and not only is it delicious but the nutritionist was excited when I told her about it. It is Sans Sucre Mousse mixes. They are frothy, light, sugar free and very low fat when made with skim milk. I stepped on the scale (once my fiercest foe) and as of today I am down to 257. I have never felt so confident in my ability to lose the weight and this time to keep it off. I have always eaten relatively healthy (I admit to some bad habits though) but my biggest challenge was always portion control. The surgery is helping me with that aspect of weight control but over the months that I prepared for the surgery, I have developed the habit of exercising faithfully. I do not let myself leave my bedroom until I have ridden my recumbent bike for thirty minutes at the barest minimum of exercise for the day. This is not to say, that the surgery was easy. Anyone who thinks this is a silver bullet for weight loss, has never done it. While I strive to eat and drink slowly, I still manage to go too fast and the result is NOT pleasant. The surgeon prescribed a medication to help with the cramping and nausea and I am definitely using it. Admittedly, I felt extremely tired after the surgery for about three days (however, part of that was due to the fact that I had to travel about two hundred miles home). But yesterday, I felt so energetic. I decided to not resume exercising until tomorrow (I cleared this with the surgeon). So, good luck on your surgery. Even at this early date, I am very glad that I had the surgery.
