KishaG replied to Krimsonbutterflies's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you can manage to bite your tongue with those who actively rooted against you, you are a stronger person than I am. How you were treated by people even if your PCM is horrible! I just don't understand how people can be like that. It is amazing how hard you have fought for your health and I am so happy for you. -
Supporting Cast
KishaG replied to Krimsonbutterflies's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had no problems whatsoever telling people I was having the surgery done. Pretty much all of my friends and family are excited for me. Even my daughters gymnastics coaches are extremely supportive of my decision. They love seeing my updates, even a teacher I had in HS (I gradated in 1992!!) is following it and has told me she's one of my biggest "fans" My family is amazing, my husband was deployed on my surgery day so at age 45 my daddy drove me to the hospital and drove me home and my mom stayed with me for almost a week to take care of me. My 12 yo is so amazing and supportive over it, she loves to ask me how much I have lost and gives me high 5's etc. My 25yo is supportive as well however he is one who was always more worried about my smoking than my weight when he was growing up. For him I made sure he knew I was well taken care of here so he wouldn't even think about trying to take leave to come home for it. I have only had one friend of mine who felt the need to tell me that she didn't think her bmi was high enough and even if it was "I couldn't handle the loose skin" why she felt the need to tell me that I don't know but that was the only not really supportive comment I have gotten she is one though who thinks she is perfectly healthy obese and it's not her fault she doesn't lose weight...so that could play into her reply too she just seems to take my having surgery personal. Whatev her opinions don't bother me in the least I did this to better myself and to stop worrying about the ticking time bomb to diabetes or heart problems. I hope you are able to have a wonderful supporting cast. For me knowing I had so many rooting for me makes me feel amazing. -
I have tricare! It was actually much easier than I anticipated. After my surgeons office got my referral their ins coordinator called me. She told me that tricare would approve based on BMI over 40, I could have even been approved at a 35 simple because of sleep apnea. Ohh how I wish I knew that a few years ago. Tricare requires a 4 month weightloss trial, the ins coordinator told me tricare does not actually require you to lose weight just to basically answer yes to all the questions -are you parking further away than needed - are you putting your fork down between each bite etc. I scheduled all 4 of my appointments to be at approx the same time and I fluctuated just a little down, up down. During my 4 month wait I had my first appt with surgeon to decide which surgery to have and had my nutrition class as well as my individual appt with dietician. After my last weight appt the end of June, I had to wait for a few more tests to come back for the surgeon, they came back the beginning of July and they submitted my packet to tri-care. Less than a week later I was approved due to timing for someone to be with me after surgery I couldn't have my surgery in July even though it was offered. I finally had it done on Aug 19. Now the difference is I do have sleep apnea and high blood pressure but again, my insurance coordinator told me just being over 40 bmi was enough. I would talk to your surgeons insurance coordinator to see what they say hopefully you are still in a Mil area where they are all accustomed to using tricare and their rules. That made it so much easier for me. The process went really really quickly for me and I was terrified tricare would randomly deny me. We are tricare prime retired and even with that I was approved. GL and if you have any questions just message me, I will answer them to the best of my ability.

Denied after being approved and devastated
KishaG replied to Panda333's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
TBH I wouldn't even bother with an appeal, just get all your records and go to a new Dr. As I was reading your post my very first thought was why would they not allow Mayo Clinic due to the IDQ, but take this other clinic even though they aren't IDQ it sounds really sketchy to me. -
Weirdest things you are looking forward to after surgery
KishaG replied to Krestel's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
1. To weigh less than my hubby. 2. Hopefully this will help my back (not all issues in mine are weight related) Kind of worried right now though because even 25 lbs lighter after over a year of maintaining the pain for the past week it has been worse than it was 1-2 years ago. 3. To not excessively sweat. 4. To not have to pay so much more just to have cute clothes. 5. To look amazing at my son's graduation from pilot training. 6. To be healthy, be able to be active without "dying" 7. Hoping that losing weight and getting healthy will help with my depression-be a happier person. I know there are more and none of these are really weird, but I am blanking on other things right now -
Like someone else here I had to go to a 2 hour training pre-op that answered almost all the basic questions, and advised you on what was going to happen right before surgery after surgery and at home. A difference is I was never told to get up and walk every 2 hours, different dr's will have different policies on that. The one thing I didn't ask that now I wish I had was about reflux I researched it (RNY not sleeve) and most people got better so I just kind of went with that mindset, 3 weeks out and we have already had to add one of my previous meds back. Since the sleeve has the risk of causing reflux/GERD If I was you I would really discuss that.

My Dr made sure I remembered my protein drink counted as my liquid for my 60 oz at my 2 week check up. I'm thankful for that since there have been a few days I only met my goal because of my 2 protein shakes a day my goal is 60g as well. Maybe talk to your NUT or RD and ask them if they would consider that to be added to your fluid intake?
-
I called my nurse about it this morning. Based on the no rhyme or reason but also another symptom I never mentioned she thinks for me it is reflux related. So they want me to start taking my carafate again (pre surg was carafate and prilosec) in addition to the pepcid they prescribed. She also wants me to go back to a liquid diet for a couple of days to rest my esophagus. Bummed about the liquids again...but hoping this will work.

I had RNY Gastric Bypass on the 19th of Aug. I keep getting the hiccups, Fri it was almost every hour, Sat I'd get a couple hour break then get them twice in an hour and on and on. I get them even when I haven't eaten and even in the middle of the night so I know they are not from eating too fast. Getting them so often is placing limits on what I can eat because of the air I inevitably swallow making me feel like I am stuffed to the max. Has anyone else experienced something like this? Any tips on how to avoid them? It is driving me insane.

I had bad GERD before my surgery- in fact finding my hiatal hernia when they did an esophagus dilation is how I got started on this journey. I had surgery 3 weeks ago today, and I was on the phone with my nurse over probable reflux issues. Before surgery I was taking omeprazole before surgery, after they switched me to pepcid. Well, now I am back on carafate and they told me to go back to a liquid diet for a few days to try to reset. Maybe something like that would work for you? You are only a week or so further out than me.

Medications: Crushing versus Swallowing Pills Whole
KishaG replied to Prestonandme's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As well as others as soon as I got home I was taking whole pills. My dr approved it for me as it was the only way I was getting my medicine in me. I'm glad to see the others do too. -
I am 16 days post-op. I manage to get almost all of my fluids and my protein every day which is great, but , I have noticed on days that I am more active I am extremely nauseous. I'm talking about just with things like light cleaning. I make sure I am sipping a lot while active because I know even in the past it doesn't take long for me to feel the need to gulp water and I can't do that anymore so I don't think it's because of my fluid intake. Last night I started getting painful twinges in the vicinity of one of my incisions and where my drain was. I haven't had any pain in a week and I didn't do anything different to suddenly cause the pain. At times it's this intense twinge that takes my breath away, then it's gone till the next random time. Anyone experiencing anything like these 2 things?
-
I feel like a lump on a log and like I am not doing very much at all, but you could be right. When I was doing light cleaning it really felt like I wasn't doing enough could just be my head playing the you're being lazy game on me and not taking into account that you're right 2 weeks ago I had major surgery. I think it was just that...ok a week no pain, hubby finally coming home last night (gone 3 months) and maybe I did over do it. I'll take a few more steps back which will be much easier to do now that he is home and see if that helps. Thank you!

Fat and Carb intake at stage 3
KishaG replied to Bianca S.'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My paperwork says to follow a 15gram carb per meal for 5-6 months. -
I no longer had any jean shorts I could wear and a busy season for my daughters gymnastics season starts next week. I quit wearing leggings months ago as I was tired of trying to find shirts to cover my butt and stuff, so it was either find new tunics which really would be a waste of money for me IMO or a pair of shorts. So exciting getting them since I normally had a 22 or 24 depending on the brand and I bought a pair of 20's. My baby girl was giving me high 5's lol. I also cleaned out all my clothes that I haven't worn in over 3 months. I figured I hadn't worn them in that long and it would be long before they were too big so I'm making space now. What started it all? I couldn't see any loss at all visually, so I tried on a pair of pants that I were too small when they came in the mail. Now they fit WOOT!

My discharge day mine brought me pudding, parfaits etc I was like are you serious?? LOL It was sooooo sweet. I could barely handle just dipping the spoon in it thankfully I didn't get yelled at for not eating.
-
So I noticed a cool little trend, of us on Aug 19 and 3 of us down 19 lbs!!!! WTG I had to buy a new pair of shorts today lol

Hey Surgery date twin! I was allowed to start stage 3 as soon as I came home on Wed. I ended up waiting until thurs or Fri and I had mashed potatoes. Since then I have had oatmeal, refried beans scrambled egg, black bean soup take it nice and slow.

Any August 2019 people out there?
KishaG replied to big_ange's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When I came home on the 21st I could only get about 2 oz down at a time. By Fri I could drink a whole bottle and have had no issues with protein at all, minus the fact it does take me at least 30 mins to drink 11 oz. One thing I know for me at least, as soon as I got more protein in me, I really started to feel a lot better. Yesterday was the first day I actually felt hunger, so for that it could just take a bit of time. Today (12 days) is also the first day I have met my fluid goal. -

I wasn't told anything at all about a calorie goal, just make sure I get my protein. My first appt was yesterday at 11 days post op. I had only lost 16lbs. But my Dr was actually very happy with that for me. I was worried I hadn't lost enough but him being happy with my loss eased my worry. -

KishaG replied to big_ange's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My trick for getting enough fluids post op- because it was mainly very smooth, pudding apple sauce etc my nurse told me during this phase it was more important to drink, most of what I was eating wasn't thick enough for me to have to wait the 30 mins. I found that with the light things drinking constantly was so much easier after I stopped setting the timer, and it did not adversely affect me. I am so glad for that even not having to wait the 30 mins I couldn't get all 64 oz in. I'm 12 days post op and today is the first day I have met my fluid goal. How? I am really not sure. My sips are a little bigger and somehow that is making it easier on me. I to experiment to find the perfect size sip for me. -
Was told not to lose weight or surgery would get denied.

Got my date!!! August 19th
KishaG replied to TravMac's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok, where are my surgery twins? I thought I was going to be the only one who hadn't come and checked in lol. So surgery went great, I remember being really surprised around 3 or 4pm on Monday that I was ready to walk but they didn't want me to just yet. No air passed anywhere. Tuesday OMG came off the pain pump and promptly needed a nap. I did not know I had to ask for pain medicine after the pump was removed. I had weird dreams and woke up in agony, more walking no air passed. Something really odd happened Tuesday afternoon, I freaked out couldn't breath hyperventilating no idea why but that just added to the whole miserable awful day. The dietician did tell me that 2nd day is normally worse, and since they fixed my hernia that affected me as well. Came home Wed thankfully slept for like 12 hours that was amazing. Today is the first day I kind of feel like a human. Tues-Thurs I am not going to lie, I had a lot of why the hell did I do this to myself, what if I am going through all of this for nothing. Thankfully I am passed that now, looking at some before and after pics helped me with that. I can't believe I'm on the losing side. I am so ready -

I had surgery mon, was allowed parfait and pudding in hospital and after discharge was told I was stage 3. I wasn't quite ready then but my body seems to be telling me it's time. Congrats on your first meal!
