Any August 2019 people out there?
Bastian replied to big_ange's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I find this hard too, I want to GLUG my drink when I am thirsty. So this whole 'timing' my intake is such an effort Practice will make us perfect though. Baby steps, we have just made huge changes to our lives and need to be kind to ourselves -
RickM that isn't actually how ketogenic diets work per se. One reduces carbohydrates, to use existing body fat as fuel rather than carbohydrates. The only macronutrient the body does not NEED to function healthily is the carbohydrate. If One reduces fat or protein too low in their diet, they WILL become deficient, as we can see by how many of us on here are carb-loaded, fat and dying slowly from heart disease and diabetes, just to name 2 of the most common diseases we all have, let alone metabolic disease etc. Yes, ketosis can give you bad breath, but it goes after a while even if you remain on a ketogenic diet. Bad breath post-WLS is often from changes in the gut flora, acid and food being eaten and processed differently. Yes, I do have nutritional qualifications, yes I do have a degree and YES I am still here on the WLS journey too, because nothing in this life is black and white

ITCHY! Can I put lotion around my incisions?
Bastian replied to PeachPerfect's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The best thing would be an antihistamine tablet and some unscented lotion for the dry skin 3 weeks out the wounds are closed on top. so as long as you don't pick at them all will be well. -
hey, sorry you are so uncomfortable with the reflux and yeah why did they not say about it and suggest a bypass initially? I had a sleeve on Aug 12th then a bypass on 21st due to a volvulus forming, so altho i have had it all done, it happened in a morphine cloud of agony. Good luck
-
hey you shouldn't be in this much pain and you should be able to sip easily. Go get a check-up from the bariatric team, I ended up with a volvulus and ended up having a 2nd emergency op on 21st Aug, after I had an endoscopic dilation that didn't work !! I couldn't keep anything down and was in severe pain. So ended up having my sleeve then bypassed with 1 anastomosis. Some great pics of the state I was in, i shall share later. I was in hospital for 14 nights

oh, they don't do any of that here.

Another Milestone & Words of Encouragement
Bastian replied to Twism44's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Congrats and what a lovely positive post! -
Night sweats can be a symptom of a LOT of things, so no point wondering, just wait until he has been seen and had bloods etc done. Good luck

I didn't suggest 'loading', I offered an approved by my dietician way to help reach the daily goal,I very clearly stated that I wouldn't be having it as my sole source of protein intake. Nowhere did I say only consume collagen as protein nor did I say go higher than your recommended target. Yes, she did ok bone broth which I make regularly so all good there thanks. Of course, the bottom line is to follow our OWN diet plan given to us by our Bariatric team and not take sole advice from unqualified randoms online. On a side note, I understand you were feeling frustrated yesterday, but you need to remember we all have our OWN journey to travel, lots of us are VERY anxious about our surgery coming up and still fighting the food demons in our heads. So, to come online in a group specifically aimed at sharing our feelings and being shot down by longer-term members and name-calling is pretty disgusting behaviour from Adults. IF you are fed up with members, just DO NOT come into the forum. Nowhere does it say you are obliged to hand out advice or ridicule people who are struggling or to add sarcastically, condescending 'lols' and I really hope that when you have struggled no one swore at you or called you a snowflake. Onwards and upwards.

No, I don't think she is misinformed, it wouldn't be the only source of protein as I will be on whey as well and of course ALWAYS better to get protein from animal sources once eating properly again. It is just to add to water the 1st couple of weeks. https://www.obesityaction.org/community/article-library/protein-supplements-weight-loss-surgery/

What is the soap and breathing device?
-
ah see my dietician said it was a good choice to make my own protein water instead of spending money on protein drinks
-
Guys you can add collagen powder which is tasteless to drinks to up protein.

I also just went straight to the surgeon, my BMI is 36.4. I don't have any comorbidities but would if I didn't do this now. My argument (if he had said no) was going to be 'but this will save everyone money in the long run as I won't get type 2 diabetes, it will help lessen my back pain and hopefully the meds I take for it, it saves a LOT of referrals to specialists in the long run' BUT I didn't need to, GO FOR IT, they might just say yes

ARGH ! I can't stop thinking about food! I won't cave because this is too important but I am hungry and want to eat whatever I am cooking for my daughter. It is driving me mad, my brain just won't shut up I am also finding that once I have my shake or whatever food I am eating on plan just doesn't cut it hunger or satisfaction wise. Am I the only one? Hoping by tomorrow I will be in ketosis so I won't be hungry at all, but dang this bit is hard!
-
oh that sucks, yeah my diet is just to help shrink the liver and make it floppy so it is easy to move, no other reason. I was told 2 weeks only as bmi is 36 so lower end of the scale. Be strong Mikeyy!

You could be snarky and say 'shame you weren't this concerned when I WAS actually killing myself!' or smile graciously and say 'great addiction to have huh'

Any August 2019 people out there?

August 12th for me too -
I’m still eating 3 meals. No sugar, nothing bad , no binging but still eating 3 meals. My dr & Nutrionist haven’t put many restrictions on me so I think I’m being too lackadaisical. I’m sharing my truth because I know it will help to keep me accountable! On another note.... aren’t you sooo excited? I’ll follow you & perhaps we can keep up to date on each other’s progress progress !!! 😄 Ah yes, mine is still 3 meals a day too unless I have a shake for two of the meals. I am glad I didn't have to do 4 weeks though! I am SUPER excited I had my pre-op assessment today, MRSA swabs/bloods/ecg and saw my anaesthetist this morning. She was lovely and doing all that today just made me even more excited. Yes good idea, when we are recovering we can compare stories lol. I honestly can't wait for the 12th, my op is in the afternoon so that is going to be one very long and slow morning!
-
Hiya my surgery is the same day as yours I am not enjoying this restricted diet but am happily plodding along. Your pre-op diet is different to mine, I have a choice of 4 types I can mix and match. I can do restricted calorie, restricted carbs and portions, meal replacement or, 2 shakes & 1 meal a day. I'm allowed to mix and match as long as I keep to 800-1000 calories a day. What are you struggling with? Hunger? Boredom?

Wowee 23lbs is awesome! I totally get the desire for something other than liquids but you know you made a huge decision to have surgery and have managed to come out the other side with an awesome 1st-week loss YOU CAN DO THIS. When you feel like 'cheating' just remember that even tho you may feel ok your tummy still needs to heal properly and the last thing you want is to vomit and risk causing a leak etc. You should just get on here and get some support to help you get your head back in the right place. Deciding to have surgery is a huge thing so just remind yourself of the reasons you wanted it in the first place And again, well done on an AMAZING first-week x
-
Kathleen come on behave, the liquid diet is to give your poor stomach which has been sliced and diced time to heal. Give yourself the best chance of success by doing the 2nd week of liquids and your poor body time to heal properly!
-
Ahh I see thank you for answering I have been told I will be able to try pureed food at week 3, so the same. When I read your comment I was thinking you tried to have just normal food...silly me!

Obesity Explained (Also Insulin Resistance and Diabetes Aeteology)
Bastian replied to FluffyChix's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I've met Jason he is great and I met the diet Dr. So much info out there about how we have all become so fat, sad state of affairs really. Still, people out there saying the current food pyramid is the correct one. Prof Tim Noakes said the current 'old school' head honchos would have to kick the bucket before we see proper changes to how our diets are managed/promoted because they are paid huge amounts by big pharma. The whole thing is a huge mess. Even with NO medical background anyone with half a brain can see that treating diabetes with high sugar foods then administering insulin to lower that sugar level makes absolutely no sense and the longer you do it the more and more sugar lowering meds you need! CRAZY!
