How long does surgery take?
CheerfulLoser replied to Tiredmimi's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I arrived at 5 am, was in the prep area by 6 am, surgery at 7am, recovery by 9am, in my room and dozing again by 10 am. It was pretty low-key! -
Sleep Apnea Testing?
CheerfulLoser replied to danielleleigh90's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I did an at-home test and was diagnosed with sleep apnea. I did not have to do an in-lab test at all. -
December Surgery dates???
CheerfulLoser replied to Kimmerz23's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Friday at work was rough! I made the mistake of wearing boots with a slight heel, not being strict with myself on drinking, and forgetting how large the campus is. Today I’m on the couch and resting. I am going to need to plan better and be more disciplined heading forward. -
Itching is also caused by pain medicines.

December Surgery dates???
CheerfulLoser replied to Kimmerz23's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That's a good thought. I start with a protein shake, so about 25 grams of protein. I'll try a protein shake snack as well, although protein shakes are just tough to stomach anymore! -
December Surgery dates???
CheerfulLoser replied to Kimmerz23's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As folks are heading back to work, how are you doing on energy and focus? I am working from home for today, and then heading to the office tomorrow, and I'm struggling with having enough energy and focus to get through work. Taking more time off isn't really an option, and I have a job the requires a lot of focus. How are the rest of you getting through the day? -
So how fast after your surgery did your taste for food change?
CheerfulLoser replied to Slimming Down Steve's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I woke up with a very different sense of taste— everything even slightly sweet now tastes sickly sweet. The nurse said it happens sometimes, and the effects should lessen over time. I hope she’s correct! -
Pre-Surgery Lactose Intolerant
CheerfulLoser replied to Sammi_Katt's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have used a ton of vegan protein drinks, and they are mostly all fine. I make the shakes in a shaker bottle, with ice. My goal is to drink, and I try not to focus on it too much. The protein shakes include the following (all purchased from Amazon.com): Evolve protein shakes (vanilla and mellow mocha) Vegansmart Plant-based Vegan Protein Powder by Naturade (wild berries) TOPBiT All-in-One Plant Protein Powder, Chocolate – Vegan Protein Powder, Sugar Free Protein, Stevia Free, Nut Free, Soy Free, 20g Protein Shake, Probiotics, BCAA, Greens, 1.8LB TOPBiT All-in-One Plant Protein Powder, Vanilla – Vegan Protein Powder, Sugar Free Protein, Stevia Free, Nut Free, Soy Free, 20g Protein Shake, Probiotics, BCAA, Greens, 1.8LB Naturade Plant Based Vegansmart Vegan Pea Protein – Chocolate – 20.6 oz Orgain Organic Plant Based Protein Powder, Creamy Chocolate Fudge - Vegan, Low Net Carbs, Non Dairy, Gluten Free, Lactose Free, No Sugar Added, Soy Free, Kosher, Non-GMO, 2.03 Pound I *did not like* this unflavored protein: Nature's Best Plant Based Vegan Protein Powder by Isopure - Organic Keto Friendly, Low Carb, Gluten Free, 20g Protein, 0g Sugar, Unflavored, 1.15 Pound (20 Servings). It’s a wee bit nasty. -

ChubRub, I would start with MiraLax at a minimum. Eleven days is quite a while to wait for a bm. -

Schedule of Foods
CheerfulLoser replied to KayLow42's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had RNY the same day as you. My paperwork said that I can also have yogurt and pudding. I’m not sure what happened as part of surgery, but I. Cannot. Stomach. Shakes. Used to love them. So I tried 2.5 oz of yogurt today (low carb, high protein). And it was fine. No drama, nada. It was ok. I made pudding with sugar free pudding mix, chocolate protein powder, and unsweetened almond milk. It was super sweet, but no problem to eat. I ate 1/2 cup in 30 min. Just go slowly and listen to your body. -
December Surgery dates???

Well, today's the day! It has been 13 months from the date of referral for this procedure, so I'm heartily ready to get it done. Fingers crossed for a nice, boring day. And lots of pain medicine. -
I’m tomorrow as well! I roll into the hospital at 5:15am, Not sure when the surgery will actually start. RNY.

So happy with weightloss but exhausted

Wasn’t there a study that came out recently indicating the vitamin patches are t super effective? The Bariatricpal store added a disclosure to their patch vitamins, I believe. -
I make an iced coffee using Folgers or Starbucks instant coffee and vanilla or chocolate protein powder. There’s no reason you couldn’t warm it up. I like using the instant coffee so the volume doesn’t get crazy.

December Surgery dates???
CheerfulLoser replied to Kimmerz23's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m scheduled for Dec 20. It seems surreal, as I’ve been on this path since Nov of 2018. I’m really looking forward to getting on with it. Scheduled for a RNY. -
Oi! I need this challenge. I’m moving to Brazil from the US for 2 months, and I’ve been spending a ton of time learning Portuguese. I’d like to spend October and November out and about. 🙂 1. Personal goal is 25 days of exercise, which is at least 30 minutes of cardio. 2. Preop 3. 213 4. Anywhere!

Protein shakes and nausea
CheerfulLoser replied to brandimichellexo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I drink my shakes ice cold, with extra ice, through a straw, and while distracted (working or online). Maybe consider if you can “shake” your routine up a bit? -
Protein shakes and nausea
CheerfulLoser replied to brandimichellexo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Can you tell whether you’re having issues with the taste, texture, or ingredients? If you have a sense of the issue, it’s easier to troubleshoot. For example, I feel horrible if I drink whey protein shakes, but do fine with the vegan proteins. -
Mental Health meds & Gastric Bypass
CheerfulLoser replied to Jonah's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Not sure if this helps, but I have Kaiser as well. In the orientation I attended, we were told that they do RNY most of the time, but they will talk about/consider other surgery types. May want to check to see if there’s more flexibility on surgery types with your Kaiser team. -
Instead of one cookbook, why don’t you hop on Pinterest and collect recipes? You may even find WLS-friendly recipes of the lentil dishes you have enjoyed.

Talking about WLS with children
CheerfulLoser posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi! I’m planning to have a RNY and I have two “tween” sons. How did you talk to them about your surgery? Both boys are stick thin (their dad’s genes are the dominant ones!). I’m a bit worried, as the younger one had a number of medical issues when he was younger and is rather terrified of doctors. -
clear liquid vegan protein source
CheerfulLoser replied to osito80's topic in Vegetarian or Vegan Eating
I would be interested in reading your review! I am having challenges with whey protein, and would love an alternative. I’m hoping to use it with miso (strained) as well as vegetable broth. -
prepping for eventual surgery
CheerfulLoser replied to osito80's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
How about things like miso paste in water, vegetable broth, or sipping broths (they look like tea bags but are savory) as “warm” options? If you’re being very hard core, you can strain the miso so it’s without residue. I also use vanilla protein drinks with decaf coffee as a “creamer.” You can do this!
