  1. Oh that's interesting. Mine is fine with meat in soups as long as it's blended. I've not tried beef yet because I'd rather just wait until I can chew it, but i've had chicken in soups, pureed.
  2. I sorta think it varies by doctor as well. Mine is fine with caffeine. Even told me to continue having some the DAY AFTER surgery if I normally drink it so that I don't get a caffeine withdrawal headache. I cut mine way back leading up to the surgery & am keeping it to half a cup to one cup after. My surgeon is also fine with creamer & sugar free syrups.
  3. My doctor is totally cool with caffeine, actually.

    Surgery went well

Congrats Susie! My first 24 hours were rough too. It's been great since then. And water is great for me as well. I think I've had a total of 1.5 of the protein shakes since the surgery. I liked them before - now just the idea of them sounds disgusting. I'm hoping that will pass eventually as they're a great source of protein.

    Finally sleeved!

You're only a day out, don't worry about the protein shakes yet. I'm 7 days out & they're still kinda nasty to me. Stay hydrated! My dr was okay with watered down apple juice & gatorade, which were both great in the first few days. I'm on mostly water now.
  6. I had these same fears! (about PCOS) My surgery was 5/23. My pre-op was 10 days of no carbs & one day of liquid. I felt like nothing was dropping, but by the date of surgery I was down about 6 pounds. Coming home from surgery - I weighed MORE than when I went in. It was annoying but I knew I was pumped full of fluids & it would change in a few days. I'm now a week post-op and I'm down a total of 11 pounds. I'm sure some are losing more, some less. I'm thrilled with 11 pounds seeing as that's 11 pounds in under a month, which for me is good.
  7. You got this Tiffany. It's only been 12 days!!! Also- I'm gonna say right now, try not to be annoyed at your husband next month because he'll probably respond totally differently than you did & you'll want to punch him. I'm only on day five and I'm counting the seconds until I hit day 14 so I can have some eggs and tuna and ground beef. The premier protein that I loved before surgery now are just ... whomp whomp kinda icky. Are you allowed soups? Soup has been going down really well for me & sort of makes me feel like I at least got some food. I have to blend it if there's anything in it. Also if you're feeling like gas is stuck in your chest try just walking around your own house a bit. When I swallow too quickly I stand up and walk a bit and gravity seems to help me out.

Hey there! I had mine done on Thursday 5/23 as well. I'm sorry you've had such a rough weekend. Did they pump you full of fluids during that overnight hospital stay? I had a constant bag of fluids on Thursday & Friday so I'm surprised you were dehydrated by Sat/Sun. My first 24 hours was rough - and I've seen so many people sail through that so I was feeling like oh gosh, why is it rough for me? But by late day Friday I was feeling so much better. And for real, my pain was SO BAD that first 24 hours. Like I couldn't believe people were saying they had no pain when I was feeling like I'd gotten stabbed. So, this might just be a part of your journey. Maybe you're going to have a rough first week. I bet it passes & you'll be onto another phase. Fluids- are you having a rough time drinking? I've been able to drink 50+ ounces a day relatively easily. My doctor was okay with diluted apple juice and gatorade. The first couple days I did that, I'm on mostly plain water at this point, but I've always liked water so it's not a big sacrifice for me to drink plain water. My notes say 4 to 8 oz per hour. So I will fill a 16 oz bottle and tell myself I should be finished with it in 2 to 4 hours & notate the time I started. I've moved on to soups and a protein shake. The protein shake felt weird in my stomach. Soups are going down fine. My stomach is definitely spasming or something when I give it something, but it's been okay. I'm so sorry this has been rough for you. It's so hard when it feels like others are not experiencing the pain or symptoms you are and you start to feel like it's all a big mistake. I was posting about 18 hours post op all WTF!!!! because all I could find was people saying "no pain!" I had moments that first couple days where I was like holy crap this is barbaric & what have I done? I hope it works out for you.

Bariatric surgery was a big mistake

If you were trying to warn people off bariatric surgery with this post I think you've done the opposite. For starters, I'm not even sure you're real. Second, if you got a major surgery such as this without doing any research... that's on you. Six food trucks and there was NOTHING you could eat? You sound like you're purposely being difficult because you're so angry. There were no hot dogs? Pull it off the bun and eat half. No big deal. A taco truck? Eat the meat & cheese, skip the shell. You are being purposely difficult in some attempt to punish everyone for your anger. Mother's Day - you couldn't go out for breakfast? Why on earth not? Assuming you were 4 weeks post op by then you could have ordered scrambled eggs with cheese and a side of cottage cheese instead of hash browns. IF the point of the holiday was to spend it with loved ones, that's what you do. If you're so mortified by the waitress asking if you enjoyed your meal ask for a to-go box the moment they set it down and pack up what you won't eat. You look like a fool carrying a water bottle - are you serious with this? American's have a drink in hand ALL THE TIME. Soda, coffee cups, frap cups. People are constantly walking around with drinks. Im not sure if I hope you're real or not. If you're not real, you are a real sad individual to come on here and troll people trying to improve their lives. Get a new hobby. If you are real... please get help. For the sake of your family, please.

I'm so sick of liquids. I just want an egg or a bite of chicken. *sobs* I had half a protein shake last night, heh. It's just not doing it for me.
  12. HI! You state you have anxiety - are you not getting any meds for it now? I have clinical anxiety and depression & took a Xanax the morning of surgery and was okay. I feel like I almost just mentally tune out for something this big. I don't know if that makes any sense. My surgery was 4 days ago. Did I want to be there? No. Did I want to be poked and prodded and cut into? No. I just showed up and did it and didn't allow myself to think too much. If it helps - the heparin you mention - they told me the same thing. This will burn, this might hurt. Honestly it didn't at all. Like a little pinch. No biggie. And they gave me that heparin shot every 8 hours of my stay. It never bothered me. The things I went in worried about didn't really happen. The things I was confident about ending up being more of an issue. By which I mean - don't spend too much time agonizing over any one thing because it won't end up being the thing that even bothers you. I went into the surgery so anxious about nausea. Nausea is not my friend. And it was - OKAY. I woke up okay, but the first 24 hours were rough, but you know what? I got through it. I had at least three separate times during that first night where I was sweating & feeling like I might barf, but I didn't. I sat on the bed and stared at the barf container (because that makes me feel better) & just breathed through it telling myself it would all be different in a few minutes. Tomorrow. A few days. It's the same way I get through the flu. I'm gonna live, just breathe. I went in so overconfident about the pain. I didn't think the pain would be an issue & then there I was the first 24 hours were rough. But again, somewhere around hour 25 it was all tolerable. I had my surgery on Thursday - I slept on my stomach last night - Sunday. Also, you're 27. Good for you for taking this step! I'm 44! I wanted to do this 5 years ago and went to one appointment and decided it wasn't the time for me. This year, I was doing it. No matter what. You're amazing for attempting to tackle this earlier rather than later.

My surgeon is anti jello, but he also said not to worry about the protein when I told him I just could not get it down. I'm getting water/apple juice/gatorade & soup down just fine. Just started a few sips of protein shake tonight.

I was the 23rd & tonight is the first sip of a protein shake I've had. I've gotten down plenty of water and soup. And sugar free popsicles have been fine.

    MAY 2019 date

Hey Shanda! I was the 23rd & the hunger hit me this afternoon. I'd freaking love some cottage cheese, eggs, ground chicken. Sigh. It's gonna be a long two weeks. I've had soup, but 4oz at a time isn't really doing much. I just in the last hour had my first sips of protein shake (up till now it sounded disgusting). My stomach is a little whoa what are you sending down. Also, I just woke up from a nap - had a dream I found a rogue box of cheez-it's & was eating those. Hahah. It's the 2nd dream I've had post-op where in my dream I'm well aware I've had gastric sleeve.
  16. I'm so glad. Encourage her to bring books & things to entertain herself. And a bottle of water or something for herself as the hospital won't be bringing you anything. My mom felt bad having water in front of me because I wasn't allowed but I encouraged her not to feel bad. I was so freaking thirsty until the next day when they allowed liquids, I wouldn't want a visitor sitting there thirsty on my behalf! I wasn't really interested in talking or watching TV the day of surgery. I was nauseous on and off and uncomfortable, just wanted her nearby.
  17. I've told almost no one. I needed to tell at least one person that could drive me home because they will not let you cab yourself home from the hospital, so I did choose to tell my mom & she's been supportive. I honestly went into this thinking "I just need a ride home from the hospital, thanks" but I'll tell you that hospital stay was rough & I was glad to have her there. I ended up wanting her to stay much longer the day of surgery than I thought, and I wanted her back a the hospital the next day earlier than I'd thought. And I really didn't want her to do much, just sit there, which probably sounds stupid. When you feel that crap it was just nice having her on the couch nearby & she could hand me things a few times. My surgery was Thursday, 4 days ago. She drove me home on Friday & has stopped in to see me on Saturday & Sunday, see if I needed anything. And it's not like I needed much, but for example on Friday she drove me home, I asked her to stay while I took a shower. I didn't need help in the shower or getting dressed after, I just wanted to know she was here JUST IN CASE I slipped or passed out or who knows. So I guess, if you can tell your mom you might want to. You might need her help more than you think that first couple days.

    MAY 2019 Sleevers

Same! My first full 24 hours were bad. Pain has been manageable since then. Had two nights of good sleep too.
  19. Can anyone tell me if this was similar for them? I see so many "I feel great!" posts. ' I've been miserable since waking up 18 hours ago. I went into this not worried about the pain at all. I had ankle surgery with a plate & screws about 5 years ago - was told that would be painful & it wasn't at all. So I think maybe I was cocky going in. It doesn't feel like gas. The incision spots don't hurt at all, it all seems to be coming from the actual stomach. Every movement is torture. They gave me morphine but it made me nauseous. I've had two does of IV Tylenol. Did anyone else feel this miserable & how long does it last? I cannot get comfortable.
  20. Thanks everyone. I'm finally feeling a bit better. Pain was an 8, I think it's down to a 4 with a new painkiller. Taking laps around the hospital & finally got water & apple juice.
  21. They switched me to hydrocodone (which has made me itch in the past). I decided itching might be the lesser of evils & my pain is down considerably.
  22. First appointment was March 8th. Surgery is tomorrow. Mine required 2 weeks of no carbs, one day of liquids pre-op. Mine is approved by insurance.
  23. JanJan19

    Not telling anyone

You need to have someone drive you home at the very least. They won't let you take a cab home.
  24. JanJan19

    Less than 24 hrs

Same here. My first appointment was March 8th & my VSG is on May 23rd. Good luck tomorrow!

What is making you nervous? I'm feeling really zen about the decision in general. I'm feeling pretty zen about giving up foods. But the post-op? That's where all my anxiety is.
