  1. You stretch your pouch by consistently overeating and keeping the pouch overfilled. No you wouldn't feel it or have any side effects you would just have a large pouch which would cause you to eat more. How many fills have you had? Have you lost weight since your last fill? It could be that you are due for another fill. Perhaps you weren't filled enough last time or you have lost weight around your stomach causing your band to get loose.
  2. I had radiating pain from the port site but mine moved upwards toward my stomach (My port is above and to the right of belly button,). The pain happened around the same time-3 weeks in. At the time I was told that it was normal and was due to the healing of the abdominal muscles where the port and tubing was stitched. Hope you feel better soon.

    Diet before surgery????

Yes, you are referring to "Last Supper Syndrome". That is when you want to indulge or overindulge in all your favorite foods before the pre-op diet kicks in. We get to thinking that we might as well eat this food now because soon we won't be able to. Of course we both know it is not really the right thing to do but I did the same thing and many others have to. I don't know if not doing that would have made things different for me. I followed my two-week preop diet to a T it was hard especially for the first week but I did it. My surgery went fine, my liver was very pink and normal...I was given pictures from my surgery so I saw it for myself! My weight loss has been steady since surgery. Keep in mind that you will be able to eat all of these foods again, you just will be satisfied on small servings of it. Try not to overdo it but don't stress out too much.
  4. Opposite here...due to PCOS, mine was rare before surgery. I got mine shortly after surgery and has been pretty much every 28 days since.

    Protein

My doctor says that once on solids using Protein shakes as a Meal Replacement defeats the purpose of having the band. The liquid does not stay in the pouch nor does keep us satiated like a solid lean protein will. The whole idea is to be able to eat a small amount of normal food and stay satisfied for longer periods. But if you are unable to get 60 grams of protein in three meals then shakes and other supplements are a good idea.

Are "fills" paid out of pocket?

Now THIS is the scenario that makes the least sense to me. You would think that if they pay all that money for the surgery they would want to cover fills to make sure that the patient loses weight or all the money spent is wasted.

    Protein

My doctor says it is important for life. Once on solids I was allowed all the other foods too but I have to have Protein with each meal. The reasons given: Protein is necessary for healing and for maintaining muscle tissue during weight loss. hair loss after surgery is common and one of the three typical causes is protein deficiency. We are taking in much less food and while other nutreints can be easily supplemented, protein is best absorbed in its natural form. Protein also keeps us full longer and when eaten with carbohydrates helps to keep blood sugar levels regulated. I am supposed to eat solid Proteins in my meals-no shakes. Shakes are only to be used in between meals as supplements if I am not getting 60G of protein from my food alone. Now that I am through the pre-op and post-op diets there is no food that I am not allowed to have. Of course I have to be sensible about my choices if I want to lose weight. All meals must contain a protein, I am supposed to eat my protein first, my veggies next then if needed my carbohydrates. I choose not to eat starchy carbs and sugar because I know that is what is best for me. My carbs come in the form of high Fiber veggies, fruits, oatmeal and dairy (natural forms). All doctors are different but that is what I was told.

To much protien a to little protien???

My doctor recommends at least 60G per day. If you are eating protein based soups like chicken or beef broth you may be doing OK.

Openly Disgusting - Why Lose Weight?

I second your list and add... Strangers (guys) noticing me when I am out-and-about... Its been a few years since I've enjoyed that! And more importantly being noticed more by DH! Getting dressed is easier. Pre-band it was difficult not only to have clothes fit and look halfway decent but it was also difficult to get into some of those outfits. Bras, pantyhose and shoes with laces were especially difficult. Less sweating...the sweating was humiliating at times.

Are "fills" paid out of pocket?

It depends. Some doctors offer a year of free fills (mine didn't). I think that in most cases if the surgery is covered then the fills probably are too. My insurance covered the surgery 80% and they cover the fills 100%.
  18. Jodi_620

    3o and thinking...

I'm still in my 30's...for another 7 months, anyway. At 39 I started into this with PCOS and hypothyroidism and am doing very well. The PCOS has already been resolved and I will be at goal within 9 months! The Lap Band has been great for me. I don't think that age is so much of an issue with us 30-somethings. It has more to do with which surgery is best for the individual.

    Help - Restriction

I prefer more restriction too as long as I can get food down. I have to eat slowly and work at it but I am able to get three solid meals down per day I don't measure but I eat about 1 cup per meal...solid meat and veggies-no slider foods/mushies--they will not keep you satiated long enough. It takes about 30 minutes to eat the meals then I am good for 4-5+ hours before my next meal. Breakfast is harder to get down, I have to take tiny bites. lunch is hard but a little easier. For all meals I have to chew well and eat slowly but the food does go down and I get in sufficient amounts. I lose about 2 pounds per week. If you are unable to get mushies and drinks down then you are probably too tight. If you are too tight then you won't be able to get enough calories in and in my experience that will stall your weight loss just as easily as getting too many calories. Maybe a slight unfill will do the trick?

    Help - Restriction

I am curious why you got a fill if you were losing weight and eating small portions prior to the fill. It does sound to me like you are too tight now.
  21. Yeah, that was really messed up Patti. I hope it turns out better next time...if not I would be looking to find another doctor. BTW: Lifting the feet up in the air is the common practice in my surgeons office too, doing so causes the abdominal muscles to push the port forward making it easier to find...at least for qualified fill doctors

    Thinning Hair!!!

I had a lot of hair loss start about three months after surgery. I have always had fine hair. Add to that some thyroid issues a couple of years back that left my hair thinner than normal...I never was able to fully recover that loss. So the loss after WLS was pretty noticeable. I have shoulder length hair and over the weekend I was trying new hairstyles and I pulled it up and there are two-three inch long strands of thick new hair along the top of my neck in the back-I haven't seen hair there in years and it has never been that thick! I took a closer look and I have spiky springs of hair growing all along my hairline. I can see that in another couple months my hair is going to be thicker than ever. When the hairloss started (post surgery) I upped my Protein and started taking hair, skin and nails with 3000mcg of Biotin. Due to weight loss my PCOS has been resolved and I no longer need my meds for it. Also, I just found out that due to weight loss my thyroid meds need to be lowered. I am not sure which of the above is contributing to the improvement in my hair but I am going to keep doing what I have been doing.
