Noise and Knot in throat
Jodi_620 replied to wintobethin's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It sounds like what I experienced after surgery but that was a result of the hernia repair. If you had a small one years ago, it is possible that your surgeon saw it while he was in there and repaired it...I've read here where people had hernia repair during LB surgery and were not told right away. For me, pre-op I was told that I may have one and if so it would be repaired during surgery. I was not told anything before being discharged so I assumed that he did not find a hernia but when I started experiencing pain like you are describing in this thread and I also had some breathing issues (muscles were too weak to draw in a normal breath) I called the after hours emergency number and the surgeons assistant told me that it was a result of my hernia repair...I could be way off-base but it possible. -

Solid food after only one week
Jodi_620 replied to playhead's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You should see your doctor but my guess would be that you have some swelling from surgery and that is making you feel tight. Keep sipping liquids so you don't get dehydrated and take in liquid Protein a little at a time to avoid irritating your pouch and the swelling should go down soon. -
Solid food after only one week

Your doctor may be popular but based on the little bit of information you have provided he doesn't appear to be competent. If he is so busy doing surgeries that he cannot provide the extremely important details about how you should be eating and why. And if he is putting the band in people who only need to lose 40-50lbs then he was not a good choice. -
The estimates are from 1.5 million to 2 million in DC. I did not go and since all bridges in from Virginia to DC were closed for security reasons, it didn't affect my area very much. My worry was of something happening security-wise...with all those people in such a small area, How would they get out safely? and being only 25 miles from DC would I be able to get my family together and get us all out safely if need be? Sadly those are things we have to think about these days. But it was amazing to hear that with that many people crammed into a small area that is typically riddled with crime on any given day, there were no incidents domestic or otherwise.

How well do you tolerate oatmeal?
Jodi_620 replied to smatyas's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I was allowed to have it during the mushie stage. -
Being from the DC area, I can say I am glad it is all over and there were no problems. I am looking forward to seeing things settle down and some work getting done now!

daddystarbucks is just a spammer for KimKins...I doubt he/she has even been banded, there has been absolutely no band related posts only ones pushing this diet plan.

Valentine's Day Weight Loss Challenge

The weight is coming off so much slower as I get closer to goal, so it is looking unlikely that I will reach goal in this challenge. But I am down one more pound! Does your doctor recommend high protein/low carb?
Jodi_620 replied to Fanny Adams's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
daddystarbucks, Just curious, do you have the Lap Band or are you just following the kimim thing? It is just that none of your posts mention your being banded nor does it seem that you have had to follow any band related rules (ie shrinking the liver or not drinking any carbonated drinks) -
You probably still have some trapped air from the surgery. It takes longer for some bodies to absorb it. Exercise, as uncomfortable as it may be is the best way to try and get rid of it.

I have never heard that PCOS people do better with bypass. I have PCOS and I have done great. I have lost 76 pounds in seven months. PCOS did not affect my approval process and the surgery has allowed to to get off my Metformin. My cycle is normal, my skin is back to normal, my blood sugars...my PCOS is gone.

It is not so much the insurance company as it is the policy you hold with them. Providence probably does offer some policies where bariatric surgery is included, unfortunately you do not have that. To answer your question, I am with United Healthcare and my surgery was covered.

Here are four of my favorites: Pureed Chili is very high in protein and low carb. (I bought the jars of Bush's chili and put in in the blender) Pureed chicken salad (try canned chicken blended with spinach dip...yum!) Refried beans blended with a a little cheese and salsa Hummus

Sixty grams of Protein is the recommendation of my surgeon and in general, the USRDA. The USRDA recommends 40-50 for females and 55-70 for males. Things like weight, sex, activity levels and health conditions determine the exact number. So sixty is not so excessive as some would have you believe. I think hunger is really hard for many of us to determine. We have head hunger and we all know what that is. There is also that empty feeling that you get when you are dehydrated or lacking something, usually Water, a Protein Drink, juice or milk help me with that feeling. For me, I try to shoot for that tummy rumbling- hunger pain hunger to eat a meal. How long depends on my current restriction, what and how much I had for my last meal and my activity level since my last meal but 4-6 hours is normal for me. Generally yogurt is not going to keep you full as long as a solid protein and veggie meal will.

Vitamin D deficient and anemic. Yikes
Jodi_620 replied to nymoosic's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I would say that if you are not getting enough sunlight then of course go out and get some fresh air and sunshine. But this situation is more likely due to your diet so getting enough Vitamin D in your diet is necessary. Also, here are some good Iron rich foods: Cereal (best choices cream of wheat, Total, Raisin Bran), Beans (best choices: Chickpea, kidney bean), Vegetables and Fruit (best choices: Potato with skin, Green leafy lettuces, Watermelon), meat (Best choices: Liver, clams, beef), Dates and Prunes. -
I was on MetforminER 2000 MG per day for PCOS. I went off it on my own immediately after surgery because I couldn't swallow the pills (ER cannot be split). I had my six month visit with my Endocrinologist 2 1/2 weeks post-op so I decided to just wait until then to discuss another medication...it was no longer doing much to control my PCOS symptoms anyway. In less than a week my cycle started without the Metformin. My endo decided to let me stay off the meds and follow up in four months. In that four months my cycle was every 28 days on the nose and my other PCOS symptoms were going away. Bloodwork showed no sign of PCOS or blood sugar issues. The only other medication I was on is Synthroid, of course I will always be on that but after losing around 60 pounds my dosage had to be lowered.

Pre-Op: If you had it to do over again?
Jodi_620 replied to JABBA THE MUTT's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I second what Karen added. At the time of joining this site I read nothing but encouraging comments about having the surgery and bouncing right back. I have a high pain tolerance so I went into surgery thinking it would be a piece of cake. But I had some pretty severe pain for three days, I was not able to lie down in bed for a week and it took almost a week before I felt well enough to go back to my desk job. The port incision pain improved from day to day but it lasted around three weeks. I remember lying on the couch on day two in tears thinking "What did I do to myself!??!". I can now say without a doubt that it was all very much worth it but I wish I would have been better prepared for the pain. -
If you are too tight nothing will go down. I am not hungry after a good fill either. I just take in liquids (shakes, broth, milk etc.) for two days and work myself up to solids. After around 4-5 days the swelling goes down and my appetite gets a little better.

Jodi_620 replied to hltwhite's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have seen this issue in several threads and it seems that different hospitals handle it differently. Some will give you paper panties to wear, some will allow a tampon, some will have you put a pad between your legs. -
I would say for me keeping at proper restriction has helped me the most. I see my surgeon once a month whether I need a fill or not and I go sooner if I need a fill. Keeping the high glycemic carbs out of my diet has been a close second. Following all the rules: Three solid meals per day, small bites, chew well, Protein-Veggie-Carbs in that order, no drinking with meal have all helped too. I have never kept a journal, that is just not for me. I make healthy choices and don't eat between meals (a treat sometimes but not regularly) so there has never been a real need for journals. I don't count calories, fat grams, carbs and I do not measure or weight my food. I eat when I am hungry and stop when I a no longer hungry.
-
I have eaten fast food but I don't make a habit of it. I have not tried McDonalds since surgery. I went to Wendy's once and ordered the chili. I've gone to Chic-fil-a a couple times and get chicken strips and carrot salad and am able to make three meals out of that. I've gotten a taco pizza at Taco Bell and again can only eat about 1/3. I prefer a nice sit-down restaraunt though.

Pre-Op: If you had it to do over again?
Jodi_620 replied to JABBA THE MUTT's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I had many "Last Suppers" until the first day of the pre-op diet then I followed the diet as instructed. On the first day of the pre-op diet I also quit my beloved Diet Pepsi. For many it may have been too much to start the diet and quit soda/caffeine cold turkey but I am an "all or nothing" type person so that is how I did it. The night before surgery I smoked my last cigarette and have not touched another one since. The pre-op diet was very hard and I wouldn't want to have to go through it again but would in a heartbeat. I have absolutely no regrets on any of the above. My advice is always to relax, start and follow the diet as prescribed, take it one day at a time and you will be fine.
