Hi all... well my operation will all be done this time next week... I am starting my 6 day milk diet tommorrow! Operation next sat (12th July)... I can't wait... so excited that I am finally getting it done after years of wishing could! I never thought someone like me would be able to qualify for surgery given that my BMI is under 40... but I wish i'd enquired years ago now!! I can't wait.......I just hope that I can cope with the milk diet given that I hate milk and it gives me a real bad stomach!! Oh well it'll be worth it in the end!

Thank you all of you for your support... I must admit I am a bit nervous now! Can't believe its actually happening tomorrow morning!! The milk diet has been awful bearing in mind i hate milk and it makes me gag! I don't ever want to drink any milk again! Although I have had some Soup cuz another surgeon told me they only suggest milk & yogurt diets because some people can't work out or manage a low calorie/low fat diet which is all that is required! I'm so excited & nervous & worried & glad!! I can't decide what I am! :biggrin2:

Hi All.... i am in the very early stages of getting a lapband.. I have my first consultation on 29th May with the surgeon to see if I am a suitable candidate for the surgery. I know that I have tried every other option & that my BMI should not be a problem, my mental state is fine too... but I am concerned about a blood condition I have. I have got Factor V Leden which basically means that my blood is a little bit more prone to clotts than normal blood. Myself & my sister have it becasue my dad is a carrier of the gene. I have never had a clott & don't have to take any medication but was just informed if I ever got pregnant or had surgery I may need some blood thining drugs as a precaution. My sister has had 2 clotts - one in her leg & one in her lung. Fortunately they were dissolved etc & she is fine and not had any since losing 3 stone in weight. So after that long story.. my question is has anyone else got this & has had the lap band?? Do you think it will rule me out of the surgery? I'd appreciate any thoughts - thanks (this is my first post too but what a great forum!) :biggrin2::confused2::biggrin2:

Factor V Leden / Thrombophillia
Me1e replied to Me1e's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi All I just wanted to update the thread following my consultation & discussion with the surgeon regarding this condition. He explained that in fact there is no evidence to prove that if you have thrombophilia that you are at any higher risk than anyone else during this procedure. There are two types of Factor V Leiden & if it is thrombophilia then the surgery is fine.. (not sure about the other type but it means you bleed lots & that is a problem). He said I would have a shot of heparin prior to and after the operation & then it should be business as normal! Yippee! -
Hey Georgina... Glad to hear it all went well... How come you have to go all over the place for follow up appointments?? Was there an option to have xray & be discharged at Dolan Park? How was Dr Richardson on the day? Was he supportive and answer questions? So it sounds like you are having your first fill in 5 weeks? I thought you had to wait like 8 weeks so that is brilliant.. get it done ASAP I reckon & get that weight off! Thats my plan anyway! I'm just about to phone the hospital today & pay my balance - scary not long to go now... I can't wait til 12th July! Sal x

Hi Georgina,
I forgot to ask.. how did the pre-op diet go? I am really worried about it because I hate milk! Did you do the low calorie/low fat diet or the total milk diet?
I weigh approx 16 stone & some people have told me that the milk diet is only for pre-op when yor BMI is over 50 (mine is 38)... its all so confusing at times!
I don't know anyone who has had Martin as the surgeon - but there is someone on here who said he was wonderful... he works mainly for NHS doing this operation on people with BMI over 70... so I guess we will be a easy op for him!

Hi all... well I have just had my first consultation today with the surgeon (Martin Richadson) & clinic co-ordinator (Sally Price) at Dolan Park in Bromsgrove. Dr Richardson was very nice & very understanding/easy to talk to. He certainly knows his stuff & has lots of involvement in this operation for the NHS aswell as privately. I didn't really know what to expect & I took my husband with me who was not sold on the idea. The good news is now that he has seen the place, met the surgeon & had the opportunity to ask questions he is now supporting me. I was worried that I would not be accepted as my BMI is 37.7 & not the required 40. However he informed me the NHS put the 40BMI limit due to cost so because I am private anyone over 35 BMI can be considered because testing shows they are suitable & it can help them. The surgeon answered all my questions & explained the procedure in full and the aftercare... he also showed me a gastric band which is much smaller than I thought it'd be! I also have a blood condition called Thrombophilla (Factor V Leiden) and we talked at length how there is no evidence that I would be any higher risk than someone without this clotting disorder. He also said that the gastric band procedure is on one of the lowest risk operations, its even lower than a gall bladder removal! We then met with Sally Price who is an advisor who answered questions about aftercare & diet etc.. she has also had the procedure done 18mths ago & already lost over 7.5 stone! She showed me how small & unnoticable the scars are. I can't fault the process so far... I am going for the WGA package which is £4950. I am booked for my operation for Sat 12th July so can't wait for my new start & smaller figure! Hope this helps ease anyone elses anxiety when going for the consultation its nothing to worry about! Dont have sleepless nights like i did! Yippeee...... i'm so excited! :wink2:
