Newbie / Post-Op/ on Protein mix-advice?
connie6288 posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Yes People...you know where I'm coming from.. putting that nasty Protein mix in your broth, in your non fat sugar free yoguart, in anything you can drink or spoon down...so the doctor and nutritionists tells you, you have to do, to heal well and maintain muscle, as well as so the hair on your head won't fall out for lack of protein... The fact is since my banding on 4/29 till today, I've lost 17 lbs. that's pretty darn good. however ,the protein mix, and non fat milk.. all the milk products,.. they make me so bloated and gassy.. and nauseated... I'm struggling right now.... and chewing down anti gas tabs on somedays when its really bad. I'm on a brand of protein mix called unjury (contains 28 grams per scoop).. nasty stuff, but the protein supplements they all taste pretty nasty to me.. I finally went to Jamba juice and got one of their lite drinks made with splenda(150 cal for a 16 oz) and I mixed the Protein powder with it, and managed to gag it down. Any hints out their to make them taste better? What to do about that bloating and gas? I'm on liquids. Goodness, I thought my little stomach would expload today! Until after I burped a few times and went for a long walk. Now its feeling a bit better. Just like a little baby!!! ha -
If you eat Carbs, you must excersize afterwards... If you want carbs, try healthy ones, like whole wheat. Whole wheat pasta's are great. Just make sure if you eat carbs to go out an excersize for about 30 minutes afterwards..walking, swimming whatever. carbs are meant to be eaten when your going to be doing some excersize.. they give your system an extra boost. So go ahead and have some in moderation, just make sure you go out and excersize! Enjoy! -k

Hello? Weight Loss? Where are you?
connie6288 replied to MSnika3's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was banded on 5/29. I've lost 25 lbs as of today, without a fill. I did start excersizing .I think excersizing makes a big difference in loosing weight. Today they've put in a 2cc fill. I don't know what is going to happen, but we'll see. -
Swimming After...
connie6288 replied to Tracyde730's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Funny you should ask that question (about swimming) as I had asked that same question today of my Dr . I was told 6-7 weeks after your surgery, also make sure you do not have any open wounds etc. -
One week post surgery - my story
connie6288 replied to DaisyMay's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I could not do the powder Protein mixes anymore and am drinking the protein "bullet" they have 42 grams of protein, cal is 170. I don't eat anything else but broth and mostly Clear Liquids anyway, so i figure i can afford to do this. Got a bad reaction from the protein powders, I think its the milk, whey, that bloats me up (not used to drinking milk) and my little stomach can't take it .. to hard on it. so i switched to these protein bullets they sell in the vitimin shoppes. taste pretty good as well. Anyone else having problems with protein mixes? good luck to you all. -
Difficulties after adjustments
connie6288 replied to whitakert's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
You need to find another doctor if your doctor is not listening to you and you continue to have this pain. From what I understand this is not normal. Nor should your weight loss /fills be this painful. you need to have a truthful discussion with your doctor and if he does not help you then find another onother one. You can go on the www.Inamed.com web site and find another lap band doctor who will help you. some docs are not experts at this and are doing this procedure as a side business... don't take any chances with your health.. and good luck -
Newbie / Post-Op/ on Protein mix-advice?
connie6288 replied to connie6288's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Thanks everyone for your advice. One of the things I searched for on this site was about what to do about those proteine shakes.. I am glad there may be some alternatives for me. The SlimFast ones (low carb) come in at 150 cal, w/ 20 grams of Protein and seem to be somewhat tolerable, but they have to be sipped very slowly or else you could get sick though.. but still its milk.. I have discovered one thing that helps with that gassy bloated feeling and that is my gradmother's old receipe for colicky stomach's, which is simply a handful of fresh spearment in two cups of Water, boil it for 1 minute and then simmer for about 15 minutes, and drink with a bit of splenda or honey.. it worked.!! got rid of the gas... -
That's the feeling you get when you over eat i understand. Also, gasses could be coming in to play here. That seems to be a problem with some people who are banded . Treat your stomach like it was a new borns. Avoid the harsh foods. My grandmother used to make me yerba buena (the good herb, is the spanish translation), when I used to feel colicky, I tried brewing it up when I had that same stuck feeling you are describing, and it went away. The good herb is actually spearment (fresh), a handful boiled in 2 cups of Water for about a minute then bring it to a simmer. then drink about 1/2 cup of it with a bit of splenda. settles you down whatever the ailment. Grandma knew best!

post-op gas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
connie6288 replied to willsmommy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
yes, it sometimes works, but your best bet... is to have someone burp you... (I know it sounds weird), but remember your stomach's like alittle baby's right now. and walking up and down the stairs and aroaund the block helps too. -
STILL have port pain
connie6288 replied to reenie11's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Goodness, I wonder if that is what I'm experiencing now. I thought one of my wounds did not heal well (they used non-stitch bandages on my wounds) and one of them came off. It looked like it was infected, so i cleaned it all up and went to the doc. this morning to complain. I too am having a sharp stabbing, pricking, pinching sensatation.. but he said that my wound is healing, perhaps because the wound was still slightly open, but its already scabbing and closing. hmm. I don't know where they put the port! I should have asked, if that what it was. I press against the wound tightly with the palm of my hand when I get up and sit down so that it won't hurt. .. I don't know if its just the wound opening, healing.. or if its the port!! -
Gas Pain!!! UUHGGGG!!!!!
connie6288 replied to willsmommy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 10 days post op, and I'm still bloated. I get gas from milk products and the protein mix as well. Ask your pharmacists for something over the counter like gas x strips.. .(sometimes they work sometimes not). for a gassy stomach after drinking protein mix, i lean forward slightly and have my mom or sister gently tap my back, so i can burp and really it feels a lot better (your stomach's just like a little baby's right now, very delicate and prone to all sorts of distresses). I can sympathise with my infant newphew now.. !!! -
I just posted a thread on this topic as well. I'm on Unjury protein power as well.. nasty stuff. but they all are. But 1 scoopful = 28 grams of protein and you'll need it. I mixed Unjury non flavored with chicken broth the first week I was home. I went to Jamba Juice today and got one of their lite (150 cal mixes) and dropped a scoopful in it, and it was drinkable (I did not gag as much). Also, I have problems with milk and milk is an important source of proteine. I can't wait to go to foods so i can have my cottage cheese instead . If I ever even think about cheating in 4 months time, i will remember the taste of my Unjury protein and that will keep me on track!!! ha ha.. like Pavlov's dog.. instead of salvating, i'll remember how horrible drinking the stuff was. good luck to you. its only for 4 weeks anyway. so suck it up!)

Im new... surgery date -5/12
connie6288 replied to swtbtrcup's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Good luck to you both. I was banded on 4/29, and as of 5/9 I have lost 17 lbs. goodness was i suprised. Be sure to stock up on unjury protien mix (the non flavor) to add to your chicken broth to keep in line with the 60 grams of protien a day goal. Its disgusting stuff, but its important to keep that much protien in your diet (so your muscles don't go soft, you heal from your surgery well and your hair won't fall out).! seriously those are the side effects of not getting enough protine in your diet. you want to loose the weight and heal well. www.unjury.com -
What made you choose Lapband?
connie6288 replied to BeckyinTn's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Well, as you have read, the surgery is much less invasive than the sleeve and gastric by pass, and its reversable. There are less complications with the lap band, and there is no "dumping" / ie. major diarrhea issues. The lap band has some issues (and i'm sure you've done the research), however insurer's are more readily prone to pay for a lap band than a gastric bypass. I guess it also depends on what your eating issues were. If you ate too much, and never felt full, then this is for you because you will eat smaller portions... you can eventually eat what you want, but it will not be in large poritions.. and that appealed to me. I can eat but my poritions are going to be way smaller than they once were. -
Would you do it again?
connie6288 replied to SeeShell's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Shelly; you've seem to have gotten a lot of responses on this, so I'll add my .2cc worth here (no pun intended) too. If you are still reading.. well .here goes; I had lap band surgery on 4/29/08 Today I had to go into see the doctor (about one of my stitches), they weighed me in and i lost a whopping 17 lbs, after being banded only 10 days. Goodness, talk about getting the wind kicked out of me, i could not believe it. Initially before I was banded, I had a lot of pain in my lower back (inflamation, chronic pain it was awful for almost a year or maybe more). but now I'm feeling ok in my lower back, it went away. it was due to the weight . I have mixed feelings sometimes, like today I felt really bloated and gassy, (the Unjury protien power and milk products make me want to gross out), but other than that... Is it worth it... I won't have diabetes, or heart disease if I stick with my band and weight goals. I will live a lot longer... and live in comfort and not pain. People do what they have to do to survive... I did, and whatever you do, take that into consideration. Good luck, C
