  1. After losing a total of 266 I have finally been referred to a neurosurgeon. When I got that referral from the spine surgeon I cried. I may finally have surgery which will allow me to once again walk, dance and do all the things I use to do over 26 years ago.

Thanks everyone, your support is greatly appreciated. I doubt an appt will happen until Hurricane Matthew has cleared out of here. Please pray that my manufactured home will be spared and we are all safe.

Just got the call today that the Dr I was referred to is the wrong one. Was given the correct Dr at the Cleveland Clinic down here in Florida. Have an appointment for Oct 24th to see the surgeon, so the ball is finally rolling.

  2. I was not allowed coffee for the first 2 months due to healing not only from the sleeve but from a hernia repair and a gallbladder removal. Follow whatever your surgeon said.

    To many stalls

Yes it is very frustrated. I know why we have the stalls but I am getting very discouraged by them. In the 6 month since my surgeries I seem to have had lot of stalls. I had my 6 month followup in July and my 9 months is due at the end of Oct. It is going on 8 weeks since my 6 month followup and I am not really happy with 9 pounds gone in 8 weeks. Am seriously thinking of just doing liquid Proteins this weekend to see if I can't get out of this latest stall.

    Gallbladder

When I had my sleeve I also had my gallbladder removed as there was an intramural calcification of the gallbladder wall. I never had any pain but during testing it was discovered. I also had to have a hernia repaired.

This might be a fun little 5 minute test for y'all.

WoW Out of 4 pages we are the only ISFJ. Nice to see I am not alone.

    I'm in Onederland today!

Renee Congratulations on your new way of life and recent marriage. You are both doing well with your weight loss and getting off the meds. Things are already getting better for the both of you and I am sure will continue to do so as long as you continue to work the program. Having support from each other is a wonderful thing. I'd still be married to this day if I had a husband who was as willing to change his life for the better along with me. Hold on tight to each other and you will have a wonderful thinner life together
  7. I get a pain on the left side under my breast area and I start to hiccup. I am eating 3 or 4 ounces of meat and about 3 tablespoons of vegetables at dinner. Some nights all I can eat is the dense Protein. I have had none of the slimy and other things that other have described. I am over 7 months post op and my indication of fullness didn't happen until about 6 weeks. I was on liquid for 2 weeks then got to add an egg the third week, week 4 and 5 was soft foods and finally week 6 I got to add dense protein and vegetables. To this day I still eat slowly and measure my foods.

    Hiatal hernia

I had sleeve, hernia repair and gallbladder removed. I went in at 1 pm and was in my room by 6 pm. Surgery was about 2 hours and recovery was 3 hours. My leak test was done during the surgery, how I have no idea. 3 hours in recovery was due to BP being extremely low.
  9. I do not see but one posting this year 2015. Is the group still active or have you all moved to another location? I have looked around but do not see any other 300+ pound groups or forums. I also was looking for wheelchair bound sleevers but didn't see any group like that either. I believe those of us who are wheelchair bound and over 300 have unique challenges that the lower weights do not have. Having others to talk too and discuss new ways of doing things would be helpful in additional to the emotional support for such a long journey. I hope some of the newer ones who joined this group this year and those who have lost their weight already will come forward. Maybe we can get the group posting again

    Eating or Drinking Your Nutrients?

I had the sleeve about 7 months ago. Every time I eat any dense foods I have pain. I also have teeth and mouth problems so chewing is painful for me. Because of these problems a lot of my foods are soft styles. I usually have a Bariatric Pal Protein Hot chocolate for Breakfast. On Tuesdays and Thursday when I work I have a turkey and a cheese stick for lunch. The other 5 days I usually have a Atkins Protein shake. An afternoon snack is usually Seafarer fish sticks or yogurt, hummus and pork rinds. dinner is about 3 ounces of ground or real soft meat or fish, and refried Beans or a bite or 2 of vegetables. By having the two Protein drinks I usually get my 60 to 80 grams of protein.

    Weightloss Roll Call!

I was sleeved on Jan 26, 2016 and also had my gallbladder removed and hernia repaired. In 8 weeks I had lost 28 pounds. I am now 7 month post op and I have lost 77 pounds. Since my highest weight I have lost 259 pounds. It is hard to believe I have lost that much weight, over 182 on my own before the surgery. My weight loss has slowed down and I still have to still lose 58 to 83 pounds. My surgeon thinks at 180 pounds the remaining 25 pounds would be excess skin that would be removed bringing me to 155. I am working hard to get to the 180 mark but have had at least 4 stalls in these 7 months and fear I am in another one. Haven't lost any weight in over 2 weeks. However I will pull through this one too and continue on.

    Sewing your own clothes

I just spent 3 weeks sewing in my pants and tops. This is the second time I have sewn in my pants. All of my pants have pockets and I wanted to save them so I took my pants in from the center seam from the back all the way around to the front and from the crotch to the calf area.. I put the pants on inside out and gathered up the excess material and had a friend pin them. Then I was able to make a chalk line, take out the pins, rip the seams up re-pin everything at the chalk line and re-stitch the pants. It also helps to take measurements of the waist hips and around each leg. Be sure to sit down after the pants are pinned to make sure you have enough material for when you do sit down. As for my tops, when I was 497 I had to take two tops and cut about 10 inches out of each side and arm area of one of the tops and sew that extra material into the other top. So sewing in the tops meant just taking the extra 10 inches out of each side. I would imagine if your neck area is not too big you could also wear your top inside out and do the same method for the tops you did for the pants but take the excess material from the side unless you do have some seams in the middle of your tops. I have not worn dresses or skirts since 1994 when I was injured and had to start using an electric mobility device. I do not plan to buy any clothing until I lose another 40 pounds and am finally below 200 pounds. There are also lot of youtube sites that provide instructions in weightloss alterations of pants. Hope this helps. I am self taught so maybe professionals will have other ideas but this is what worked for me with the sewing skills that I have,

    Shots?

I had to have a lovenox shot each day for 30 days. However I am physically disabled and walking was not something I could do. The nurse showed me how to do the injections in the hospital. At first when I found out I had to give them to myself I didn't think I could do it. There were many things I didn't think I could do at first but I overcame them all and the shots was just another thing to add to the list. I did bruise easily from them but by the second month the bruises were healed.
  14. Thank you both for your replies I have sent your replies to my friend and will let him follow up. I must say I was a bit surprised when he said his wife was now 300 pounds as I too thought issues of not eating would have set in by now. She has had the disease for at least 5 years that know of.
  15. Hi Everyone I was talking to a friend of mine about my sleeve surgery and how well I am doing. He has an obese wife with Parkinson's Disease. Over the last year she has gotten even bigger (now 300) due to her increased lack of mobility. He had asked the Dr about the bypass surgery and they said no due to the fact that she has to take so many meds for the Parkinson's Disease. I asked him about the sleeve and he said he didn't know about it. So I told him I would ask here. Has anyone with Parkinson's Disease had or know of anyone who has had the sleeve surgery? Are you able to take all the meds needed and how is the weight loss going? My friend is still moving his wife from the chair to the toilet and into the van. He said it is getting more difficult as he is almost 70 years old and as she is getting bigger he is losing and getting weaker. They do have someone 4 days a week for bathing but no help for when they go to the Dr or out to shop or the theatre. Thanks for any replies, or suggestions.

Am I making the wrong choice?

If I am correct, another advantage to the sleeve is the hunger hormone is gone after surgery but it does come back. I don't think the hunger hormone goes away with the bypass. I was always hungry and never felt full, throughout my 60 years of life. Now am I not only full with a little bit but I am never hungry and I am 7 month post op. As of today I have lost 76 pounds since surgery and feeling great. Do your research on this site and read the various books available and outcomes from all the surgeries. You and your Dr have to be sure you are comfortable with which ever surgery you decide on. I know I was and still am. The sleeve was the best surgery for me and I wish it was available to me many years ago. I may be a senior citizen but I am working the tool and will finally get to my ideal weight. Better late than never. Good luck and keep us posted as to what you decide and how your doing. You have waited 16 months don't back out now.

    Changes after hair loss

I am coming up on 7 months post op. Been taking Biotin for years before my surgery for my nails mostly. Continued with it through the months after surgery as well as all my other Vitamins and my Protein is between 60 to 80. I am also 60 years old and have not lost any hair. I don't know maybe based on what one poster wrote it might still happen. However if it does and it gets really thin and looks bad I might just go get a wig till it grows backs. I can imagine for many of you who are younger it is a difficult thing to deal with. However I would rather be thinner and have thinner hair than be super obese and sick in many other ways and have thick hair. It is a compromise I am willing to accept for being healthier, happier and finally able to live a more active life.

    Swimwear

I got 2 swimsuits at the beginning of this season for $70.00 at swimsuits for all. They have from size 8 to 34 all styles and they even have great cover ups. I have lost so much weight over the summer I just sewed my suits in.The pants were too big. The bra bands were too loose and the straps had to be taken up as they kept slipping off my shoulders. Next year I will have to buy new ones and will go back to swimsuits for all. Good luck, hope you find something you like.

    Sleevers over 300lbs?

Highest weight 497 Surgery weight 315 Had sleeve, hernia repair and gallbladder removed on Jan 26th 2016. Currently weight 241. My Dr suggested the bypass but I told him No I wanted the sleeve and he was ok with it.

    I'm engaged!

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE BOTH OF YOU! Yes I shouted that! Your ring is so beautiful and so are the both of you. How exciting to be getting thinner and planning a wedding. Hope you don't mind if I following your progress in both areas. I planned my own wedding (didn't have family or a wedding planner) many moons ago and love to see what others plan.
  21. My WL Surgeon in addition to the sleeve did my hernia repair (which came back 6 months later but he told me it might) and removed my gallbladder all at the same time. He will be doing my hernia repair again after I have lost some more weight. I am the one that is wanting to lose more weight before surgery as it has only been 7 months ago that he did those surgeries. As for the medical alert bracelets I was told to get one but have not done so yet. Some like to keep a card in their wallets but you never know if in an accident if they will find your wallet. Or maybe you are out bikng like I do and don't have your wallet with you. This site did have several postings about that over the years and did list some sites that had bracelets that were very nice looking and they were not the standard medical alert. I suppose I should get one with Gastric Sleeve VSG, No Blind NG Tubes, No NSAIDs

    Gallbladder removal?

I had mine removed when the surgeon did my sleeve and my hernia was also repaired. Losing weight quickly tends to cause problems for some people whom didn't have their gallbladders removed before having the sleeve. You are going in for a surgery anyhow and since you have stones it would be best to get it removed.

    Sleeve or Bypass?

It is your decision as you know what is best for you. I knew someone who weighed over 500 pounds and he had the VSG operations and lost over 250 pounds. So it is possible for large amounts of weight to be lost. It really depends on how well you follow the food program and work the tool. When I last saw him and saw how much weight he had lost I also started researching. I read some books and got on this web site and read both the bypass and the sleeve and the complication forums. FOR ME - I decided to go with the VSG. At the time of my first consultation with the surgeon in June 2015 I weighed 352 pounds. He put me on a 6 month supervised high Protein low carb diet and gave me the blue book (his program manual) which explained the VSG procedure, pre and post diet and the Vitamins I would have to take. I also had to go through a lot of testing to make sure the VSG would be the right surgery for me. Since June of last year I have lost 110 pounds. I still have 80 pounds to go. I went with the VSG because of several reasons: 1. my age, (60) 2. the fact that the WLS plus the gallbladder removal, and hernia repair would be my first surgery and I didn't want to be on oxygen and in the operating room any longer than I needed to be. The Bypass with the other surgeries would have taken a much longer time. 3. there was no rerouting of my organs. 4. I had a neighbor who had the bypass and she was always sick after she ate. I have enough back pain and didn't want additional pains. 5. The surgeon agreed with my decision that at my age and my physical condition that the VSG was the correct procedure to do. Please research and research some more before you make the decision. The procedure is one you will have to live with for the rest of your life. Good luck in whatever you and your surgeon decide. It will be so much better for you in the long run to get it done now. I wish the surgery was available to me 20 or 30 years ago as my life would have been such much different.
  24. When I read of other peoples pre and post non weight loss surgeries and medical problem they have had I am so grateful for the health that I did have despite being obese most of my life. The WLS, hernia repair and gallbladder removal all at the same time was the first surgery I ever had and I am 60 years old.

I guess Grandmother was right "when she said, Make the most of what you have and the least of what you haven't". Look around and see the misery of other, then we can realize just how blessed we are.--especially us ol' gals. :)

I never knew my Grandmothers or Grandfathers but my Mom was the one who taught me to be grateful for what we had.

Yes I was very lucky not to have had the diseased gallbladder or hernia explode. I had them for at least a year before the

surgeon was willing to remove and repair them when he did the weight loss surgery.

    My own personal nightmare

WOW you have certainly been through the ringer with all those post surgeries you had. You must be a very strong woman to have gone through all those medical problems. If I read correctly you now have the sleeve and are still on the phentermine. Does the surgeon know you are on that medicine? I would discuss it with the surgeon and follow what the surgeon says. Personally I would think it wouldn't be needed anymore. If you follow the eating plan you were given the sleeve will restrict you from eating and the remaining weight will come off. Good luck with everything and I hope your surgeries days are all behind.
