How’d you Choose? Sleeve v.s. Bypass?

I am having RNY since I have GERD issues. However, even without that issue, I would have pushed for the RNY for myself. I just felt it was the best option for me in resolving my severe sleep apnea, high blood pressure and avoiding the diabetes that runs in my immediate family. It really comes down to a personal choice between yourself and your surgeon. There are LOTS of very successful, inspiring people on this board who have done well with either surgery!

    I lied

I do not plan on telling many people. (I have told one close friend and my immediate family.) The rest, unless it might actually help someone, do not need to know. If someone else here feels comfortable telling everyone I think that is exactly what is right-for them- and they should absolutely do that. I guess I can't understand why it seems to bother some on here so much that i might "lie". I am not somehow cheating someone out of something by choosing to be private about MY body. Why would someone's curiosity trump my right to keep my own life to myself? I am not ashamed- I am also not just gonna entertain every moron with WLS story hour. So in this vein of thinking, Is everything fair game???? For example, someone goes up to a 60 year old very perky, well endowed woman and says " Wow! You have the boobs of a twenty year old! Did you have that fake t*t surgery?" Does she HAVE to say yes? Does she HAVE to explain "Well, I was always flat chested" ? Is she "lying" because she is ashamed? Is she perpetuating a "perky t*t" after 60 myth? Probably not, and the person asking has no right to an answer either. JUST SAYIN.....

    Psych eval question!

I didn't have any of that, no questionnaire at all. I just had a single half hour face to face chat. (It was really one of the easier visits, so far, for me.) Sounds like they are more through where you are, which isn't all bad. Hang in there!

    Mental evaluation

Just had mine. About a half hour of face to face talk. Aside from the generic, get to know you type stuff some of the questions were: Why do you think you gained the weight? What do you hope to get out of surgery? What changes are you prepared to make before/ after surgery? What support do you have? Any past trauma? Any past/ present mental health issues? What are your present/ future coping strategies? What do you envision yourself doing after you lose the weight that you don't do now?
  6. Hello, everyone! I wanted to take a minute to introduce myself. I am in the process of getting my list checked off for approval for RNY. I will be having my surgery in Des Moines, Iowa at Mercy Hospital once I get through the process. I have done two NUT vists, a psych eval, met with my surgeon, and done most of my scheduled tests. It is a long story, but I actually don't know if I will need 3 months OR 12 months (!) of supervised diet for insurance approval. (Again, it is a long, curse word inducing story- I will post in insurance issues more about it maybe.) I am 5'8 and weigh about 280 lbs at present. I was always UNDER weight as a kid and until my first child. People actually used to tease me for being too thin. (I feel like I have somehow conquered that particular issue though- probably by eating it. Lol!!!!) After doing the diet -lose it -regain it and more thing for 20 years I guess I was just plain ready to get real about sh*t. Obviously, what I had been doing wasn't working. That notion led me to doing better research than the FBI for the past year or so on weight loss surgery and its options. After much soul searching, nail biting and head scratching I made the decision that the only worse things I could do was: 1. do nothing at all and 2. ignore the problem. So here I am. I want to thank you all for letting me stalk a bit before saying hello and I look forward to getting to know you!

    spouse, boyfriend/girlfriend/family heavy??

My Hubs is normal weight and pretty much eats anything. (The slender jerk! LOL!) In our 28 years of marriage he has seen me through a bunch of different weights and has always, always been super supportive of me. Something I probably take for granted much too often. I am really grateful to have him- he's a keeper! Since starting my journey, he is my biggest cheerleader and is always willing to restructure our meals etc. in an effort to really take hold of the new lifestyle coming our way as a family. He is really a big part of my motivation in getting healthy- I'll take as many more years as we can get together!

    Pre op

Hi Jenn! I am a newbie here too, so there are many, many, people here much better suited to answer your question. That said, I believe once you get your actual date your Doctor will get you instructions for any liquid diet you need. (Not all of them require them and they vary quite a lot.) You can always call them to be sure. Anyway, from one Newb to another, welcome! Keep chipping away at it!
