How’d you Choose? Sleeve v.s. Bypass?
NotActive1234 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi my name is Jen! I am just beginning my pre-op testing and had my initial consult with my surgeon this past Friday. I’ve done a lot of research about the sleeve and the bypass but I am struggling with choosing which would be the best for me. I’m curious how did you choose the best option for you? What was the deciding factor for the surgery you chose? -

2 1/2 Weeks Post-op food intake
NotActive1234 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had gastric bypass on 3/19 and I am about 2 1/2 weeks post-op. My first two weeks after surgery I was on a full liquid diet. I moved on to the next phase of my programs diet on Tuesday. We do not do puréed food at all but move directly to solid proteins. Before switching I was struggling with knowing when I was full or hungry. Once switching to solids I can for the most part tell when I should stop eating. For most foods I can eat about 2 oz. However, tonight I had some homemade chili for dinner and I was able to eat a cup worth of chili. I’m not sure if it was because it was a liquid and had small bits of beans and hamburger but after I ate it I was shocked how much I ended up eating. I feel like sometimes I don’t have any restriction to my new stomach. How much are you able to eat at 3 weeks post-op? -
My surgery was on the 19th. I was on a full liquid diet for two weeks. Today I started eating solid proteins for 4 weeks. I can’t eat fruits, vegetables or nuts. My program doesn’t do purées at all.

Hey everyone! I am scheduled to have my gastric bypass on March 19. I am trying to be as prepared as much as possible. What are somethings that you wish you would of had after surgery when you returned home or what were somethings that you were glad you thought of beforehand? I’ve already stocked up on food and protein drinks that I can have after surgery.

Hey! I'm new here and currently debating on whether to have the sleeve or bypass. I saw in the bypass forum there was a post discussing how much weight people were able to lose in the first 6 months after surgery. I'm curious what kind of success people with sleeve have seen. I know weight loss can be slower with the sleeve. Have you noticed this? Also, congratulations on any weight that you have lost! I can't wait to be 6 months post op and see how much better my health is!

I’m so excited! My date was tentative until insurance approval and I just heard back from the coordinator at my surgeons office and insurance approved me! March 19 is now my OFFICIAL surgery date!!!!

I’m scheduled for bypass on 3/19 and I can’t wait! My highest weight was 320 lbs and I currently weigh 304 lbs. On Monday I have my pre-op class and I am pretty sure I will be starting my pre-op diet on Tuesday. -
Psych Eval Cost.. is this normal?
NotActive1234 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey Everyone! I am in the process of doing all my pre-op appointments and testing. I have my upper GI x-ray tomorrow morning and then my psych eval on Tuesday. After that, I am done! (YAY!) I received an email from the psychologist that is going to be doing my evaluation and she told me how much it is going to cost. The appointment is supposed to be between 2-3 hours long (first half talking to psychologist and second half doing assessments) and she is charging around $575 after insurance. My insurance is a $1500 deductible and then after insurance, I have to pay a 20% coinsurance until I am at my out of pocket maximum of $3000. Before the appointment, I am about $500 away from my deductible. So I know anything after that will go towards my out of pocket maximum. I understand that the surgery process is expensive and in the long run, I'm still meeting my deductible and out-of-pocket maximum, but $575 just seemed like a lot of money. I am just curious if other people had to pay around this much or this amount is way out of the ball-park. If anyone has any insight, I would greatly appreciate it! -
Best Plant-Based Protein Shakes?

I've used Vega protein powder in the past and really enjoyed it. There wasn't a single flavor that I tried that I didn't like. -
Psych Eval Cost.. is this normal?
NotActive1234 replied to NotActive1234's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That's how I felt about the lady that I saw for my psych eval. I really liked her a lot and would definitely considered her as my regular therapist. I know after surgery I will have met my out-of-pocket maximum so maybe I will go see her until the end of the year. Plus I know that her regular sessions aren't that expensive. We did end up doing some longer assessments and I think that is where most of my money went for the eval. -

Thanks Foxbins! I really appreciate your answer. I did end up seeing the psych and I think it was worth it. I ended up being there for about 4 hours which included the interview and 3 assessments. -
How’d you Choose? Sleeve v.s. Bypass?
NotActive1234 replied to NotActive1234's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thought I would post an update! I decided to go with the bypass. In the long run I think I will find the most benefit from the surgery because of its effects on diabetes. I got a call from my surgeons office and my surgery is tentatively scheduled for March 19! -
Just heard from my surgeons office and my surgery is tentatively scheduled for March 19 as long as everything goes through with my insurance!!

Thanks for the link gabybab. Unfortunately my surgeon requires in person evaluations. Bootscraper, the provider is actually one of their recommended offices to the eval. I’m tempted to call the coordinator of my program and ask her if this is normal. Part of me feels like the psychologist is just charging me the most she can because she knows I will have to meet my insurance anyway so why not make the most money off me. My husband and Mom are of the thought process that I’m going to meet my deductible and out of pocket maximum anyway so why does it matter in the end who gets the money as long as it counts. -
Post Op Question How Much Did You Lose In The Initial 6 Months After Surgery?
NotActive1234 replied to Mrs.D's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I did not choose my surgery type.. my doctor did it for me... i think doctor know better than us!!!! I had sleeve I wish that my surgeon would choose for me but he left the decision up to me. He went over the pro's and con's of both of the surgeries and then gave me two authorization forms to sign (one for the sleeve and one for bypass) and said once I make my decision to send that back to the office. He suggested that I go to the local bariatric surgery support group and talk with friends and family who may have had the surgery to help make my decision. -
New Job Offer, planned surgery
NotActive1234 replied to Bootscraper's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Definitely take the new job! Congratulations! I would tell your new manager though. If they are really interested in you for the position and they care for their employees they will understand that you have this pre-planned surgery. Honestly, if they were to rescind the offer because you were having surgery to improve your life and health for the better, would you really want to work for them? Also, from the managers' standpoint, if you wait to tell them then that may upset them because unless it was an emergency surgery typically you know in advance and withholding that information could inconvenience them especially if they were able to find someone to cover for you temporarily while you were out of the office. I also agree with the other posters that you don't have to divulge what type of surgery you are having if you don't feel comfortable doing so. -

Wow! Awesome weight loss everyone! I'm currently debating between bypass and the sleeve, but leaning more towards the bypass. What made you all choose the bypass over the sleeve? -
How’d you Choose? Sleeve v.s. Bypass?
NotActive1234 replied to NotActive1234's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks everyone for your responses! I appreciate it. I originally was thinking that I wanted to get the gastric bypass since I've heard that type 2 diabetes is more quickly managed with the surgery and the ability to lose a higher percentage of weight in the first year. However, I had my consultation with my surgeon on Friday and he discussed both the sleeve and bypass. I've had my gall-bladder removed and a pelvic surgery and he mentioned that when someone has had pelvic surgery like I have that a few times he has run into issues performing the gastric bypass and that it was something for me to consider when I make my choice. However, he is leaving the choice up to me. I'm just afraid if I go with the sleeve that I won't be happy with the results but at the same time if my scarring is too bad from my previous surgeries he might not be able to perform the bypass on the day of surgery and have to end the surgery. So I'm torn between having the sleeve and maybe not being happy with the results and developing GERD or risking it and having the bypass with the chance of not being able to have the surgery.
