do you have to stop smoking?
ibjennifere replied to cmayes's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I quit at the same time I started my clear liquid diet for 14 days. After that 2 weeks of hell I don't want to start again if I can help it. I am 1 week post op. Accupuncture helped a little I think, Chantix as well and I am going in for hypnotism in a day or so. Just like the band, we can use all the tools we can get our hands on. I smoked for 25 years, have been fat for ten and would hate to die from blood clots trying to get thin if I could prevent it! You can do it! -

ibjennifere replied to willsmommy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not as funny as "Tamale pie and Pepsi" under the heading "can anybody eat sushi?" LOL Of course, None of it's funny, this is how we learn and get help when and if our doctor's don't tell us what we need to know.... -

Can't stop eating!
ibjennifere replied to okpunkinpie's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Those Soups look yummy karri!! You do need to get creative. I love Thai, so I add a little light unsweetened coconut milk to chicken boullion, some curry paste or powder, a touch of splenda, fresh basil leaves and a couple of chili flakes if you like some kick! In a couple of weeks I can't wait to pour this over a piece of broiled halibut, Yummy! -
Banded 5/7 anyone else out there close to me?
ibjennifere replied to MissieLyn's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Missie, I was banded 5/7 also. I was clear liquid pre-op for 10 days. After surgery I ate clear for first 2 days then added yogurt, cottage cheese in very small portions, perhaps 1/4 cup. I ate a scrambled egg for Breakfast both yesterday and today and had a pureed soup for lunch and dinner. I have had no trouble so far! How about you? -
chest pain? Gas or full?
ibjennifere replied to 2BtinyinTN's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon explained to me like this... In order to have plenty of room to operate within your abdomen, they inflate you with CO2 "to expand the area" he said. I think the dissipation of those gasses was the most painfull part of recovery! Oh, and when it a bubble makes it into your shoulders it's as bad as broken ribs! Ask your doctor, but I am sure this is what your experiencing. I was banded on 5/7 and today, the 12th, I feel that it may be just about gone, whoohoo! Oh, the reason you don't burp is because it's not in your organs, it's just everywhere! -
Quite possibly regretting my UCSD decision
ibjennifere replied to SanDiegoPhotog's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So glad to hear it! I had my surgery last Wed. and all went fine. One word of advice..do be diligent about the clear liquid diet pre-op and here is why; as part of the surgical process (and I had never heard anything about this) you will be inflated with CO2 to expand everything and make more room for the doctor to move around. This was and still is the most painfull part of the recovery process! The air bubbles move all around your torso, even up into your shoulders and take up to 5 or more days to dissipate. The more you shrink your liver chances are the less they will inflate you! I was diligent and still had a liver "larger than he would have liked." Anyone who says the pre-op diet isn't miserable is lying! It is hard, it is lonely and depressing but you can do it, and I believe it is the hardest part. I am already eating small bits of cottage cheese, yogurt and creamy Soups just days after surgery, however it's easy now because your just not hungry! I have about 12-16 muscle milk shakes that I don't need and you will to get through the pre-op. They are quite pricey so perhaps I can get them to you. I will be going to the next support group which you can do before surgery, I did, so keep in touch. :wink2: -
Quite possibly regretting my UCSD decision
ibjennifere replied to SanDiegoPhotog's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I started there too but decided to meet one more surgeon and I am so glad I did! I am getting banded May 7th one month after seminar and meeting new surgeon. He was with Scripps but now has his own practice. Dr. Bhoyrul 858-457-4917 He is great and his patients adore him! I am self pay so didn't have insurance holding me up, however, he calls Liz his "rotweiller" due to her diligence and sucess in dealing with the insurance companies. UCSD was going to charge me $1000 just to meet the surgeon the first time. I have had 5 appointments here, no charge then paid 1/2 on day surgery was planned and the rest the day of surgery.
