How many grams of sugar is too much sugar?
ABawdyMermaid replied to Tejee's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I can't remember where I read it, but I think it was no more than 14g of sugar per 100g (which is a serving here where I live.) It might have been in my materials, I can't remember, since I haven't read them lately. Most of what I eat has about 8-10g of sugar per serving, though I'm not sure what I'm getting daily. Somedays I struggle to eat much at all, and I know I'm not getting that much for the most part. I probably should start logging, but I just really hate counting out every single thing that I eat. <.< -
No support at home
ABawdyMermaid replied to sheslittletex's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Firstly, I am sorry that you have to deal with that. To have your family not support you is just awful. I would suggest trying to find support elsewhere (like here!), and maybe there are groups in your area for people who have done WLS as well that you can check in to. I parrot what JessLess has said though, buy your own food and cook it at home, since they are unlikely to be supportive of your decisions. That's really the only thing you can do, I think, given the situation you are currently in. -
Ugh! I feel like it’s not going down.
ABawdyMermaid replied to mayglow2007's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That sensation would make me very nervous if it lasted overnight, but keep in mind I am a very anxious person! I've had that sensation in the first couple weeks of my surgery when I would eat too quickly or take a bite too much. The latter happens even now when I make a mistake, but the sensation goes away within half an hour or so once the food has moved down. How bad is the pain? I wonder if something could possibly have gotten 'stuck?' I'm new to weight loss surgery, so maybe some others will pop in here to give their experiences. I would say though if the pain continues, maybe contact your team and speak with them about it. If it becomes even more painful when you try to breathe, you might even consider a doctor's appt. I know that pulmonary emboli can cause pain in the chest when breathing in. Are you struggling to get air at all? -
Hi there! I can tolerate a bit of spice, but the other night I tried a little sriracha (sweet chili) sauce in some of my food, and my taste buds have apparently changed so much that I can no longer tolerate it. It didn't make me ill or anything like that, just that post surgery, it's way too hot for me. I guess I will need to work up to eating hotter foods again over time. 🤷♀️

Hey everyone! Just checking in to get your all's opinion, do you all think this wound looks infected? Yesterday I noticed a drop or two of pus coming from the wound, and so I immediately went to the emergency room where they said that wasn't quite normal but my infection values weren't high nor did I have any kind of fever so they said just to keep it clean and watch it. Tonight it seems to have gotten a bit worse and now it looks like it has more pus and also feels a bit more painful. There's not a whole lot of redness around it that wasn't there before, but I don't know if I should go back again in the morning? Does this look in any way normal? I had my surgery on the 15th of this month. Sent from my H60-L04 using BariatricPal mobile app

Here's some of my experiences post-gastric sleeve! Mine was back on Jan. 15th, so it's not been too long for me. For me, I had the gas pains off and on for about a week or so. They came and went, and sometimes they were quite bad while at other times I barely noticed. I even ended up going back to the emergency room after having pains between my shoulder blades/left shoulder area that were severe (and it was only gas, apparently.) The soreness of the wounds didn't last too long overall, maybe a week? One of my wounds did get a little infected, and I had to go back to the doctor to get some antibiotics, but it seems to be just fine now. Also about the gas pains, people say to walk a lot and that it helps. It didn't seem to have much of an effect for me, unfortunately, but I know it helps many others, so you could give that a try if you're able! That said, I still did walk as much as I could, since it lessens your chances of developing any kind of blood clot post-surgery. Nausea is something I've had to deal with quite a bit post-surgery as well, and it happens for a variety of reasons. I've discovered that when I take certain combinations of medicines, it makes me nauseous, and I will start dry heaving. I don't seem to be able to physically vomit anymore, even after eating. Only one time did a tiny bit of bile come up, but otherwise.. Just awful, horrible dry heaving. I also get nauseous after eating certain foods that my body no longer agrees with. I also get nauseous drinking plain water for some reason, and I have read that this is common (and often helped by just flavouring it.) My suggestion is that you might want to take the full amount of time you're given to recover, instead of going back to work right away (if you can afford to do that.) At least, that's what I would do, since for me, at least.. Some days after I felt absolutely miserable and would not have wanted to do any kind of activity save for resting in bed. If you truly feel like you're good to go though, then do it! (Ultimately, it's up to you and how you feel!) I hope this helps! I'm not a veteran here, but feel free to ask any questions, and I'll answer to the best of my ability!

To snack in between meals or not to snack
ABawdyMermaid replied to Kris77's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Mine is to eat three small meals per day along with three snacks for a total of eating 4 to 6 times a day. I am also supposed to be getting around 90 g of protein per day, but I am barely able to achieve 40 to 50 on most days given how little I can eat at this juncture. I am pretty sure with my plan, they always want you to eat 4 to 6 times a day, but make sure that they are very small portions. At least that is what the information they provided tells me. After surgery, ever eat food you shouldn’t?
ABawdyMermaid replied to Bluebird_'s topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Nothing is off limits to me on my plan, but if it's high in sugar or generally not good for you, then of course I am supposed to eat very little of that. That being said, I am still on the soft foods phase of my plan, and a couple of days ago I tried a few of these lightly crunchy mini 'crepes' with goat cheese I got from Lidl. I chewed them up until they were mush and only ate like 5 or 6 of them (they are super TINY), and I've not had any issues, thankfully. I just really wanted to try them and see what they were like, so I only had a few. I don't tend to stray towards the bad foods as much anymore as well, though I did have a craving for Kinder chocolate after seeing my hubby have a bite the other day. I asked for a literal lick from the chocolate, and that satisfied me just fine, lol. I can only eat just a few bites of anything as it is, so I just haven't really been inclined to eat anything junky/not-good-for-me since I'm already struggling to get in enough protein as is. On top of that, I don't want to cause any complications with my stomach either. My motto now going forward though is.. Eat healthy MOST of the time, but I won't deprive myself of occasional treats or naughty foods, or I know I will slip back into bad habits. When people tell me 'no', I naturally gravitate towards wanting to do the 'forbidden' thing I'm not supposed to do. -
Does this look infected?
ABawdyMermaid replied to ABawdyMermaid's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Okay! Figured I'd post a little update. So today I was cleaning the wound, and I think it looks better? No more redness around the wound, it's not hot anymore, and not painful either. It's also stopped bleeding/oozing pus as well. I've been taking Cephelexin (or however you spell it) thrice a day for about 4 or 5 days now for the infection. Otherwise, I've just been keeping the wounds clean with antibacterial spray and covering the one that was infected with antibacterial wound dressings. Today it looks like this. Does the middle part (the dark purple/red strip) look okay to you all? -
One of my biggest complaints right now is the fact that I now have to take so many medications, and I have to stagger them over a period of hours because if I take them together as I used to do before the surgery, I will start vomiting and get terribly nauseous. Although it sounds silly and is me just over exaggerating, it feels like I spend a big portion of the day trying to figure out when to take my medications since there's just so many now. :| Sent from my H60-L04 using BariatricPal mobile app

I'm in a stall this week as well, but my surgeon told me that it's very common for weight to go up and down, up and down, but that overall the weight should be going down. I have been noticing other non-scale victories though, so I'm still happy and I know this is just a passing thing! We can get through it! Sent from my H60-L04 using BariatricPal mobile app

Does this look infected?
ABawdyMermaid replied to ABawdyMermaid's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I would if I knew the Neosporin equivalent here. I've asked my nurses, but none of them know what it is. I could try to research the active ingredients though and see if I come up with anything! -

ABawdyMermaid replied to ABawdyMermaid's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There was pus and blood coming out of it, but it just can't be seen in the picture since I didn't take a picture of that directly unfortunately. Just as an update, I did go back to the hospital and they put me on an antibiotic just in case, Kefalexin, or however you spell it. Some of the dissolvable stitches fell out as well today and beneath them it was very oozy in some spots. :/ Sent from my H60-L04 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Any Other Sleevers who did NOT have to do liquid diet before?
ABawdyMermaid replied to fun_freckles's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I didn't do any kind of swallow either. Just loads of bloodwork, diabetes testing, and a gastroscopy. Sent from my H60-L04 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Yeah, I actually just posted that in another thread, that plain water makes me physically ill, and I want to vomit shortly after drinking it. It doesn't happen though if I flavor it with something. Sent from my SM-J330F using BariatricPal mobile app

For some reason when I drink plain water, I actually get physically ill and I don't understand it at all? I have a phonecall scheduled for Monday with my nutritionist, and should hopefully have an answer then. I noticed that I don't have the problem though if the water is flavored with something. Water makes me sick at night?

Very good tips, thank you! Sent from my SM-J330F using BariatricPal mobile app -
You can do it! It can be really difficult, but it is sort of a precursor to your post-surgery diet, at least for a while. (also depending on what your plan is!) My pre-op diet was a month-long, 5 protein shakes a day plus a very small amount of protein and up to 1 lb of non-starchy vegetables. I know the pre-op diets can vary drastically depending on your personal plan. Just hang in there though, you can make it through! Sent from my SM-J330F using BariatricPal mobile app

do you tell your weight lost
ABawdyMermaid replied to Xapphirea's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Friends and family are privy to that information but strangers? That's not really any of their business in my opinion, unless they are health officials who are helping me in some manner. The person that you encountered in the store seems very rude to have gotten angry with you for not answering the question, no matter her 'good' intentions. The way I see it though, there is no sense in hiding myself or my weight with friends or family; they see me often and know how I look so it's really not a big deal that they know. Ultimately though, it's up to you what is comfortable to be shared and with who! Sent from my H60-L04 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Just once, and I'm not really sure why it happened to be honest. It was... Very unpleasant, to say in the least and ugly yellow-orange. Mostly I have dealt with constipation due to the very high protein content in all of my food and drinks. I am now on medication to help regulate my bowel habits, hopefully! 'Waving' gas pains in chest, upper back/shoulder pain, just miserable!
ABawdyMermaid posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey everyone, Tonight I have been dealing with a new set of issues related to my recent sleeve surgery.. since about seven hours ago, I have been getting a considerable amount of gas like pains in the center of my chest that spread all the way to my left arm and shoulder and sometimes even my right. They are quite painful, and seem to come in waves if that makes any sense. I am also getting a great deal of pain between my shoulder blades and again around my left shoulder especially. Sometimes the pain even reaches up the side of my neck , and my left arm can sometimes feel heavy or weak. These pains are all similar to the gas pains that are felt post-surgery, however these at least seem to be unrelated. Much of the pain is felt around my sternum or just beneath, especially, and they are quite scary especially since I have severe anxiety and a deathly fear of blood clots as well as the gastric leaks. I will admit that I possibly overate or over drank earlier in the evening, but I don't know if this is related and if it would cause such considerable pain for this long after? I am also very frustrated right now as I can barely eat anything at all or drink anything. Drinking between meals is especially difficult, and I know that I'm not hitting my liquids or my protein goals. I guess my biggest concern here is, does this sound like a gastric leak? I know that it normally presents with a fever and usually extremely strong pain, however my pain is not that bad and comes and goes (overall). Or, should I consider that this is possibly blood clot related? Or does it just seem normal? My mind is kind of going haywire right now with all the anxiety, and all the what ifs.. Did you have to share a room in the hospital?
ABawdyMermaid replied to jasmineinmymind's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I did share a room with a very nice Finnish lady who unfortunately had a tumor on her colon that had to be removed along with a small section of her colon also. She was quite friendly although we could barely speak to each other because of the language barrier. When my husband would come to visit me, that was the only time I could really talk to her at all since he could translate what I wanted to say. Before I left, she was not doing very well, but I hope that she has a great recovery all the same. I actually think that for me at least, I liked having someone else in the room since I didn't feel quite so alone. Sent from my SM-J330F using BariatricPal mobile app
