Does Eating really get easier?
ms.sss replied to Phish_Monkey's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
4.5+ yrs out, sleeved. i can eat about 1-1.5 cups of food at one sitting (more if its salad, less if it's dense protein or fluffy bread)....but if i eat bites at a time, here and there, over a long period of time, i can def pack in more. -
Respectfully, and with no malice whatsoever, suggesting a therapist for auxiliary support is NOT bashing, in any way, shape, or form. ❤️ ESPECIALLY in THIS forum. Alot of us recognize (or eventually come to recognize) that there is alot of head work to do for long term weight loss success. Food addictions, emotional eating, self-medicating, self-worth, body dysmorphia, anxiety, depression, anorexia/bulima are just some the the many, many issues our community tend to suffer from en masse. Yes, there is diet and exercise, your nutritionist and your personal trainer can help you with that (as can the members in this board). As for whats going on in your head, thats what the therapist is for. The folks on here can offer a sympathetic ear and suggest anecdotal solutions, but the real work can be done with a GOOD therapist (unfortunately i also do recognize good ones are hard to find). anyways, good luck, and just know its not an insult here when someone suggests a therapist...it's actually a sincere effort to help. ❤️

I Am Not Really Seeing The Weight Loss I Was Expecting
ms.sss replied to Hey Man's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Fun fact: the most weight i ever lost in one month AFTER wls was the first post op month with 21 lbs lost (and i was about 225 at the beginning of said month). the most weight i ever lost in one month BEFORE surgery was 25 lbs (and i started off that month at 180-ish). so weight loss roughly the same-ish. and i was eating roughly the same-ish (i.e., basically nothing lol). i didn't expect to lose "faster" because it still boils down to calories in-calories out. maybe if i ate less in that POST-op month than i did that PRE-op month, sure. but i can't eat less than "basically nothing"! thats just math. and science. surgery doesn't make me burn more calories. its all restriction-based (though rNy does have a malabsorption aspect to it...but i digress). now the main difference is this: i re-gained those lost 25 PRE-op lbs plus packed on another 55 for good measure over the following 4 years. VS...keeping those 21 POST-op lbs off PLUS losing an additional 99 lbs on top of that over the following 7 months. im 4.5+ years out now and have continued to (more or less) keep all 120 lbs off for over 4 years (FOUR YEARS! that still blows my mind...i have never lost weight before and even come close to keeping it ALL off for even 4 MONTHS). yes, you will lose at the same rate doing diet and exercise as you would with surgery and it's associated physical restriction, IF (and that's a BiG IF) u continue with the diet and exercise. which leads us to the age-old question: so why didn't u? food for thought. ❤️ -
Struggling… the evil voice is back.

case in point: i noticed the other day that my never-overweight-in-her-life friend of mine eats basically the same way (and roughly the same amounts) as i do with my significantly reduced intake post-wls. i've known her for over 25 years and she never seems like she feels deprived (never says, oh i cant eat that, etc) nor is anywhere close to having the same "awareness" (for lack of a better word) as i do regarding food choices. she just seems to eat what she wants just in smaller amounts. and always had for as long as i've known her. she's not on a diet, it seems... its just her normal eating habits. i think the idea of deprivation may come when a person longs to keep their obese eating habits vs accepting and finding a new normal. long term success (meaning keeping the weight OFF) with weight loss among the obese should ideally come with a significant mind shift...but not everyone can (nor maintain) that. ❤️ p.s. also want to add that i'm NOT saying i found nirvana or anything...for me its more of a "so far, so good" attitude about eating and weight loss maintenance. i am fully aware that i may gain unwanted weight in the future (nothing is forever!), but i'll deal with that when i have to deal with that. -

aww so sweet. my Kid brought me home a green smoothie ❤️ 290 calories for the cup. im currently still drinking it, but i figure i'll stop drinking at about 1/4 cuz i looked up the nutritional values on the company's website (see below) and its got waaay too much sugar for me to drink more than that in one sitting. Just goes to show ya, just because its green doesn't mean it's not a catalyst for dumping. From the company's website: lotsa sugar and so little protein. oopsies. -
Fourth of July grill out ideas?
ms.sss replied to Bananas4Bananas's topic in Regular foods (stage 4)
grilled veggies on a stick! eggplant, zucchini, asparagus, broccoli, sweet onion, carrots, portobello, sprinkle with some olive oil and spices and grill to caramelization! eat em off the stick, or toss em in a bowl with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar/glaze and some buratta or fresh mozzarella or firm ricotta and go to town. #yumYUMyum if you want a bit more protein, grill up some shrimp as well, or, my own personal fave: add some anchovies if eating out of a bowl (yes, i realize anchovies are not for everyone 😜) (yikes...now i just hyped myself into going grocery shopping for some veggies to grill...) -
High protein meal/snack ideas, Hair loss, overeating
ms.sss replied to Erin18's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i used to time my bites in the early months. if the timer in my watch went off and i didnt want to eat, i'd set it again and see if felt like food in the next interval (the length of the timer depended how far along post op i was) if i still didn't want to eat after 3 consecutive times the timer went off, i called DONE and put the food away. would make another attempt at in a couple hours. outside of water sips the first week post op, i didn't force myself to put any food nor drink i don't want to in my mouth. i still don't. -

High protein meal/snack ideas, Hair loss, overeating
ms.sss replied to Erin18's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
snacks: crunchy veggies, cheese, beef jerky? hair loss: mine started at 3 months post and stopped around 6 months post. at around 18 months post, all the "new" hair that started sprouting up when hair loss stopped were the same length as my "old" almost-shoulder length hair (i had cut off all my hair into a pixie around 3 months). by 3 years post op my hair was about under-boob length and u would've never known i suffered serious hair loss. in fact i actually think its thicker and healthier now (plus it grew in kinda wavy, which i love). over-eating: now based on your description of the kinds of foods and amounts if it u eat in a typical day in your post, i kinda think you may be underestimating the cals you note u are consuming? without seeing the amounts and actual food, what you describe seems like it would add up to much more than 1200 cals a day? maybe you can go over your food logs with your nutritionist and see if they can help you identify areas to re-visit? -

it may look like mashed potatoes and beef with spices, but it's actually greek yogurt and dates...with spices lol. ever since someone on here mentioned they put black pepper on thier yougurt years ago, i have since preferred my yogurts to be more savory than sweet. i often put other "uncommon" stuff on my yogurts: roasted garlic, carmelized onions, anchovies, cucumbers, bacon, olive oil.. 228 calories for this one. ate it all. -

scrolling thru my pics and forgot a i took pic of last night's dinner. BFF invited a bunch us over to critique her 7 hr long home smoked beef ribs (A++ btw). ate all the meat off one bone (and i mean ALL, i was two fisting that sucker to clean it off completely!); a bite of the garlic bread (too hard for my liking); and about 3/4 of my side roquefort and pear salad (BFF is a chef supreme). and all the red wine in my glass before eating. MFP says 649 calories for everything shown, but i really don't think the beef rib was worth 330 cals. but whatevs. its worth noting the meal another friend of mine is also captured in the background. as you can see its very similar to my portions...only diff is she has a couple tbsp of baked beans as well. she ate all if hers plus a brownie for dessert. she is one of those never-overweight, naturally slim people who doesn't particularly watch WHAT she eats, just doesn't eat much (compared to others) cuz she just doesn't eat much....but she will eat ANYTHING, in smaller amounts. no one ever comments/commented on how little she eats, vs the ridiculous amounts of questions and words i would get in the immediate months post wls. but now, as its been quite a while now since i've been eating just like her, and no one even bats an eyelash anymore. thank goodness! -

seeing your meal often reminds me how i really should be making better food choices these days. i feel like my daily salads from yesteryear have become a thing of the past. which is weird because i love salads. i blame laziness. im gonna aim to fix myself a nice fresh tasting salad tonite! -

ok, so i felt for something else (despite the fact that i still had leftover quesadillas), so i made another attempt at the butter tarts. this one is 1/4 of a regular one (not a maple one like the one i tried to eat the other day) so i figured i wouldn't find it too sweet?!? WRONG. took a nibble if this one (vs a lick like the other time) and i felt a pavlovian shudder in my chest. Mr. ended up eating it. why do i keep trying? because they are delicious and SOMETIMES, they don't immediately turn me off. sigh. this 1/4 butter tart would've been about 100 cals, but im logging 33 cals only for the nibble taste. -

pretty hungry this AM so whipped up a "breakfast cheese quesadilla" with a side of a bit of greek yogurt for dipping. I usually have sour cream for quesadilla dipping, but u know what? greek yogurt does the same (if not better!) job 401 calories for it all. -
Gastric Sleeve 6/15/23 and now lactose intolerant
ms.sss replied to JenniferLilly36549's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i had a mild case of lactose intolerance prior to wls. i was able to eat ice cream for instance, but not drink a glass of milk. since surgery (4.5+ years ago), i seem to have gotten more sensitive to dairy, where i now have to have a lactose pill to enjoy ice cream or creamy soups with no issues. cheese, however seems to still be ok. yay! -

when pantry is stocked with candy snacks, you will inevitably eat the candy snacks. my afternoon snack: 1/4 a maple butter tart, 2 sour keys and 1/2 cup cashews. 332 calories for whats shown. ate all the nuts and gummy candies, but literally had a LICK of the butter tart to check if it was too sweet and yep, it was (i mean, its a butter tart! what else would it be but too sweet?! but i always hope it won't be). no one around to hand it over to, so i just tossed it. so sans partial butter tart, calories updated to 231 cals for what i ate. -

yep, i find that the burger patties i make at home are much more calories than the ones i get at fast food restaurants! well, at least based on said restaurant's posted nutritional info. Granted, my burger patties are probably 4-5 times the size of fast food places. also the restaurants could be lying!!! -

is easy (and normal!) to have swirly thoughts. but really, you'll know if you have issues when u know. and when you do, you can deal with it then. easy to say, yes, i know. but take it from the multitude from the other side, alot of the worries you are having now are more likely at worst, temporary, and and best, unfounded. Good Luck! ❤️ -

simple fix: (1) shorten your microwave time (2) soak a paper towel with water and completely drape/cover the intended food to be reheated, and voila! moist food
