    The Maintenance Thread

<! -- Begin Random Brain Dump --> So....there was a post on another thread that brought up the existence of studies that proposed that WLS patients who have plastic surgery to remove excess skin after massive weight loss are more likely to keep the weight off further down the road than those who didn't. I remember reading something to that effect a while back, so I did a little digging, and yep, there are studies that suggest this idea. Here is is just two that were on the first page of my search results: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/10/131001104541.htm https://www.soard.org/article/S1550-7289(15)00850-3/fulltext So as I often do, I went down the research rabbit hole. I wanted see what other theories were out there that isolate certain behaviours or circumstances that increase the likelihood of long term weight control after bariatric surgery. The regular stuff that we already know came up about the positive co-relation of the following with short & long term success in weight loss: daily weighing (of body, not food, LOL) logging/tracking food intake weight training to maintain or increase lean muscle mass the above-mentioned body contouring Then there was one that sort of resonated with me, for some reason. That the likelihood of long term success is related to the amount of (or lack of) sedentary activities a person participates in. Those who spend less time watching TV, sitting at a desk, or spend time on their devices are more likely than their sedentary counterparts to keep the weight off longer term. And that this was the bigger indicator of "success" than the 4 points made above. Since the PS, I have been pretty sedentary. I looked at my steps and I averaged less than 1000 steps a day the first 10 days post op. I felt ick and lazy and tired and really just didn't want to move (mind you, I was in recovery so there's that). Then I purposefully made the effort to walk around every couple of hours and felt better. Then I started going outside for longer and longer walks and started to feel normal. After yesterday's 2+ hours outside and this morning's 1 hour (with more to come throughout the day) I feel aaaalmost awesome. The more I moved, the more I wanted to move; and on the flip side of that I realized that the more I stayed still the more I didn't want to move. Funny cuz this is probably obvious to some/most of you, but it was like a light-bulb moment for me, duh. 🙄 So moral of the story: Keep moving, people. <! -- End Random Brain Dump -->

    Beautiful!!!
  4. Yeah, you likely ate too much too fast. Waiting it out is the easiest thing to do, but you can also go for a walk and will go away faster (and you can get some exercise in ) P.S. can you try putting smaller portions of food onto your plate so you don't feel the need to "clean your plate" and risk over eating? You can always put more on if you are still hungry....
  5. The first couple days is tough, but it does get way easier once your body gets used to it . You are doing great. Also, the amount of weight one loses really varies and depends alot on starting weight (among a myriad other things). To put things in a bit more perspective, you *could* look at percentage of weight loss instead. Good Luck!

    Moving over here Now!

@AJ Tylo : ^^ Yeah, agree with above poster. I also tried to do a big jump (form 600 to 1000) and the sudden increase in calories made me feel ugh and stuffed. So I went back down again and slowly increased by 100-150 cals every week, which felt better. But then again, you are a dude and a bit bigger than me, so it may not affect you as much... P.S. I'm 6+ months into maintenance now and average maybe 1800-2000 normally. Good Luck, I'm sure you'll navigate maintenance as well and self-assuredly as you did weight-loss.

    🔥 2020🔥

    I like this one.
  8. Funny, I too slept for the first time with a regular pillow under my head (i.e., no incline) last night! I couldn't comfortably lay flat due to the TT though, so I kept my knees bent over the wedge pillow (which I've been doing all this time anyway). What a difference this made this morning when I woke up: my midsection was significantly less stiff and it was almost effortless to get up out of bed #yay. @rs : does your surgeon not require you to wear compression garments/ace bandages anymore?

    2 Weeks after Plastics Update

I stood up straight today! But then I sat down in front of the TV for an hour and I "re-hunched" myself. So I guess I need to move more often I also walked outside for 10.6 kms today! Mind you it took me 2+ hours over 3 separate trips, but I did it! So long as the weather is reasonable, I've made it a short term goal to do 10 km outdoor walks until I can start running again. Now that the front of me is looking pretty good due to the PS, by backside (read: my butt) is looking even worse by comparison. So I also started doing some squats today I hate them, but its really the only exercise I can do given my current recovery state. We'll see how long I can keep this up, LOL. I really, really, really, want to see how my incisions are doing, but the steri-stips are firmly staying in place and will not be changed (if at all) until Jan 8 at my next follow up with my surgeon. Swelling is still an issue, but I think I'm the only one that notices it. My pants continue to be tight at the waist. I am really looking forward to getting out of these joggers and hoodies I've been sporting...especially as its Mr & my anniversary next week and I wanna wear something nice to dinner at least!!

  16. I didn't read your post until after I wrote mine just now, but yeah, what you said! LOL, we all need to MOVE. I went for a 3km walk this morning, and while it took FOREVER, it felt really good to get moving. My mini-goal today is to go on several mini-walks every couple of hours and get 10km total under my belt. For some reason I'm not nearly as tired as I have been lately so am gonna take advantage of the energy I've got today (may have been all the calories I consumed last night, LOL). Re: the Spanx/compression garments, I picked up a few well made and inexpensive garments (a body suit, vest & shorts) from Amazon you may want to check out....
  17. I think you have sort of alluded to it in your post: you need to move or change your positions often. I have been walking more and more the past 3 days and this morning I was able to stand up straight. I sat down afterwards and watched a 1 hr TV show and when I got up I was hunched over again. In terms of my arms, I am also making a point of moving them more (specifically raising them higher) and again, I notice the more i move them the less stiff they are. So while I liked being waited on by Mr. and the Kid for the past couple weeks, it is better for me if I do more stuff for myself as it makes me move around and loosen up....even if it is less efficient. ...In terms of the pain & swelling near your elbows, do you know if your surgeon did any Lipo there?

    Daily Menus for Maintenance

Yesterday, Tuesday, Dec. 31 Maintenance : 5'2" / 1yr PO Sleeve / ??? lbs (last weigh in 115.0 lbs on Dec 18th) ---------------------------------------- NYE was a low key house party at a friend's house and I was fully prepared for a calorie and carb overload last night, so I did not disappoint...LOLzzz: ...and yes, there was still pecan pie in the fridge which we dove into when we got home. ...and yes, i dumped. I knew it was going to happen soon after I finished my late-night pecan pie. Since I was pretty tipsy the death feelings were short lived as I pretty much passed out after the bathroom portion of the dumping. Mr. was sober enough to carry me upstairs and put me in bed. Unfortunately he did not wipe off my makeup so I LOOKED like death this morning. (Note to self: someday teach Mr. how to do my nightly face cleansing routine....) ---------------------------------------- 9:30am - Grande Starbucks Blonde Soy Americano Misto 1:30pm - salad w/ vinaigrette + cucumber + carrots + 6 grape tomatoes + 1 tsp grated Parmesan + 1 slice prosciutto + 1 oz roast beef + 1/2 oz grilled squid + 1 shrimp + 1 oz bbq pork + 1/2 oz grilled chicken + 5:30pm - the leftovers from my 1:30pm meal + 4 chocolate covered coffee beans + 1 slice pecan pie 8:00pm to 2:30am: 9 mini bell peppers + 3 baby carrots + 1 broccoli floret + 2 tbsp ranch dip 1 oz brie + 2 slices cured meat + 1 tsp blood orange jam 7 oz total roast pork w/ 2 tbsp sauce 1 snack pack Glazed Pecan w/ Cranberries Trail Mix 1 tbsp tiramisu 3/4 cup greek yogurt + 1 oz blueberries + 1 tsp chia seeds + 1 oz almonds 2 seed crackers w/ peppercorn pate 1/2 slice pecan pie 1 french macaron 1 bottle of red wine ( << yep you read that right.) 1/4 glass champagne ---------------------------------------- Totals: 3275 cals - 126g Protein - 224g NET carbs - 160g fat

    Daily Menus for Maintenance

Yesterday, Monday, Dec. 30 Maintenance : 5'2" / 1yr PO Sleeve / ??? lbs (last weigh in 115.0 lbs on Dec 18th) ---------------------------------------- Man, we were gifted a Pecan Pie from our neighbour yesterday and it is so delicious. I had 2 half slices yesterday and as I type this I am contemplating getting another 1/2 slice. I'm hoping that Mr. and the Kid finished it off by now because while I didn't have any serious dumping, i did get a racing heart for like 30-40 mins and got pretty tired after I ate it each time yesterday (and the macrons and truffles probably didn't help either). All these holiday treats and snacks in the house right now will be the death of me. ---------------------------------------- 1:30pm - salad w/ vinaigrette + cheddar + cucumber + carrots + 6 grape tomatoes + 1 slice prosciutto + 6 mussels in white wine sauce + 1/2 slice pecan pie 5:30pm - 3/4 cup greek yogurt + 1 oz blueberries + 1 tsp chia seeds + 1 oz almonds + 1/4 cup full fat milk + 2 french macarons + 3 seed crackers + 2 tbsp peppercorn paté 8:00pm - salad w/ vinaigrette + 1 tsp grated parm + cucumber + carrots + 10 mussels in white wine sauce 11:30pm - 1/2 cup greek yogurt + 1 oz blueberries + 1 tsp chia seeds + 2 Lindt Lindor Dark Chocolate Truffles + 1/2 slice pecan pie ---------------------------------------- Totals: 1742 cals - 89g Protein - 168g NET carbs - 75g fat
