  1. Depending on the state of your thighs, a tummy tuck/lower body lift *could* address it. I was seriously considering getting my thighs done at some later date prior to my my tummy tuck. Turns out all the yanking smoothed out my thighs so that I no longer feel the need for a thigh lift. ...my butt however is still too saggy for my liking. Been doing butt firming exercises to address it, and while I do notice some improvement (especially clothed) I know nothing will take away my double-chin-like ass cheeks except surgery. ...soooo, maybe a lower body lift will do for the ass what the tummy tuck does for the thighs? ...i dunno, just another thing to think about when planning the order of surgeries...

    Portioning out food

I measured by volume exclusively the first month. After that it was primarily by weight, with sometimes volume (i.e., liquids, semi-liquids, sauces, etc...)

    From the album: ms.sss OOTDs

All dressed up and nowhere to go!
  4. Mussels in white wine sauce and braised fennel. I ate 10 + about 1/4 cup of fennel: 112 calories (since I didn’t have any bread, I didn’t have anything to soak up sauce 😕 )
  5. I had multiple procedures done in one shot...though not sure if its considered “the works”: had a tummy tuck, breast lift and arm lift this past December. Recovery was a little on the rough side, but if I had to do it all over again, I’d do it the same way. A couple months of recovery was enough for me...i wouldn’t want to have to go through that multiple times. But that’s just me...there are others who also had multiple surgeries as well on here and probably didn’t complain half as much as i did. Surgeons often have a time limit on how long they want their patients to be under. Mine didn’t want to go over 6 hours.
  6. I felt like eating, but I know I’m not actually hungry. Sooooo this is my sad attempt at a healthy-ish snack to satisfy my crunch craving: 1 carrot + 2 tbsp of a homemade sour cream concoction that i’ve come to love (sour cream, lime zest, feta & cilantro) : 45 calories...ate it all
  7. ...or just to alleviate crushing boredom...
  8. Omg i need to try this 😳
  9. Everyone loses as different rates...stick to plan and we all pretty much end up at the same place in the end (barring any complications) P.S. I lost 11 lbs in my liquid pre-op diet (which was for 2 weeks). I ended up losing more than 1/2 my total body weight.
  10. These were the guidelines given to me as well at around the month mark. (Though I was probably eating maybe 1/4 cup only 2-3 times a day in reality at the 1 month mark) Also, I was cleared for all food (as tolerated) at 1 month.

When did you start working out post op?

I was walking (albeit short walks) on day 1. Cleared for all exercise at 1 month (though I didn’t really start any serious regular exercise until month 3, not because I was unable to, just turned out that way 🙂)

    Hypothyriodism and VSG

Not sure how you define “too much too fast”, but in the first month or so you will likely drop weight without even trying: your stomach will physically prevent from eating alot (at least in volume). That’s not to say that you have ZERO control of this as you still have a choice of the TYPES of food you eat, i.e., low vs high calorie. I mean you could choose a clear bone broth or you could reach for a creamy higher fat soup. Though I personally wouldn’t recommend purposefully slowing weight down by increasing calories so early on...but if that is what you really want, you talk to your team and they can advise you. As for drinking lots if water, I think most find that this ability returns within the first month of surgery (barring any complications, of course). I was back to drinking a ton of water by the end of week 2...BUT I couldn’t (and still can’t) drink while I’m eating nor for about 30-40 minutes after eating. Good Luck! Edited to add: as for toning your body, nothing will prevent you from doing this (unless you have physical limitations). Now whether or not you can SEE the toning is another story. If you have alot of weight to lose, the excess skin may cover all your gorgeous muscles up. Unfortunately the only way to get rid of a lot of excess skin is with plastic surgery. I didn’t have too too much excess skin on my stomach (looked like wrinkled fabric), but after my tummy tuck, my abs became clear as day.
  13. Does your dietician know your exercise routine? If not, they may want to tweak it a bit given your activity. At 3 months I was doing some sort of cardio 4-5 times a week, and lifting 1-2 times a week as well. That’s when I actually started to LIKE exercise!

    Pita bread question

I was ultra-low carb during weigh loss phase: less than 25g NET carbs a day (i don’t count fibre nor sugar alcohols in the totals). In maintenance, I eat more carbs for sure (and u can see the difference it makes: my face is not so Skeletor-ish anymore, even though I’m actually 12 lbs less than the time I decided to stop losing weight). Its sorta known that it you cut carbs from your diet, weight loss is generally faster than NOT cutting it out (all other things being equal, of course). BUT, this is not for everybody. For some, cutting out a whole food group may just lead to feelings of deprivation and may set oneself up for failure, among other things. For others, refraining from carbs is a little easier. I guess you know yourself best and will be able to figure out what type of eating plan works for you. In regards to your original question on pita: I have yet to eat any soft pita since surgery, BUT I have had homemade pita chips (pita seasoned with olive oil & spices then air fried), and had no issue....though I probably only had the equivalent of 1/4 an actual pita, so not sure if that really counts...?

    800 calories

800 calories can actually be alot of food if you choose the right ones. 4oz of grilled chicken sprayed with avocado oil & seasonings is a measly 110 calories, and will likely be more than you can even take in in the early months. 3 cups of a mixed green salad with cucumber and carrots and a sugar free vinaigrette is less than 50 calories 1 cup of pasta carbonara (made w/ two strips of bacon and 1 large egg) on shiratake noodles is 162 calories and is crazy filling. Going low-cal and not feeling starved is def. possible, ESPECIALLY in the first few months. Good Luck! P.S. I did less than 800 cals a day until I reached goal (and even much much less in the first 3 months) P.P.S. I figured it was just something I had to do get to where I wanted to be. I am almost 2 yrs post op now and have been maintaining my weight for over a year at much, much more calories.

    Canada? Anyone?

I had mine done at Humber River, paid for by OHIP. No issues nor glitches in the process, and had I not changed my mind a couple times, from PCP Referral in May 2017 to scheduled 1st surgery date (Jan 2018), it would have been 8 months. Turns out I delayed my surgery twice (due to indecision) but finally bit the bullet and had it done in Oct 2018. Looking back, I wish I just went through with it the first time. But yeah, hindsight is 20/20. If you are able to choose which centre in T.O. to go to, Humber is better for parking availability and cost....and you won’t have to deal with downtown traffic to attend the multiple appointments (AND it has a higher percentage if private rooms 😎) Good Luck!

    Alcohol?? 🤔

..ah good point...forgot to factor that in as well.

    Alcohol?? 🤔

I was given the following reasons to refrain from alcohol: (1) empty calories (2) can contribute to worsening GERD (3) metabolization of the alcohol may have undesired effects with your new digestive system (4) risk of transfer addiction. I was not told never to have it again, but to use caution before proceeding. I rarely had alcohol during weight loss phase, I would guess probably less than 10 times the entire time, and these times wouldn't even be an entire regular "serving". It was always dry red wine or gin/vodka with soda (less calories and less carbs). I once had a couple sips of a flavoured soju like 2 months post op and ended up on the bathroom floor for over an hour. Not pretty. I can get tipsy/drunk reeeaaalllly quickly (and on much, much, much less than pre-op). But I also sober up astonishingly quickly as well. 1 drink and I'm def affected. 2 drinks and I'm drunk. But about an hour later I'm totally back to normal again. I'm almost 2 years post op now and I drink fairly regularly (particularly since COVID started!), though I still stick to red wines and spirits with no sugary mixers for the most part (with the exception of Kahlua, an important ingredient in espresso martinis) P.S. I am NOT advocating drinking to all, especially if your team advises against it. Everyone is different and should aim to know their limitations and stay within them. Some may have more trouble with this, which is probably why lots say to just stay away. It can become a slippery slope.... Edited to add: I just realized the title of this thread was for bypass. Oopsies, I'm a sleeve, and I think it may be a bit different, between the two: alcohol will bypass a portion (or all?) of the small intestine in by-passers and go directly to the the large intestine, which results in different alcohol metabolization rates...

Another T.O. resident chiming in!! ...But I'm almost 2 yrs post op (1 year, 10 months, to be exact). Congrats to you all getting through your surgeries ❤️ 🇨🇦

    Calories per day?

In the first 3 months, I wasn't given a specific calorie count, just portion size guidelines and macro distribution. It was supposed to be 50% low carb veggies, 25% protein, 25% starches with meals being 1/2 to 1 cup depending on how far along I was. With that said, I chose to do my own thing (and told my team so...and they had no real objections): I prioritized protein and went ultra-low carb. Weeks 1-2 (400 cals a WEEK...this was not on purpose, it just happened this way). Weeks 2-4 (300-400 / day) Months 2-4 (500-600 / day) Months 5-7 (600-800 / day) ...and tried to stay below 25g NET carbs day (I didn't count fibre nor sugar alcohols in my official carb count)
  21. Another patio lunch: mixed greens w/ cucumber, tomato and apple w/ honey lemon vinaigrette + seared salmon. Ate all the salad and about 1/3 of the salmon. Oh, and a vodka ceasar beforehand (not shown) I logged what i ate/drank at 292 calories.
  22. As a rule of thumb I always choose the highest calorie listing in MFP for any food that isn’t verified (i.e., the ones without the little green checkmark). I figure its better to overestimate than under.
  23. Patio lunchtime with a couple girlfriends earlier. I had the beef tartare...this is my after pic (forgot to take a before pic in my eagerness to eat it!) ...also, a bonus pic of the pretty charcuterie board that was ordered for the table. I didn’t have any, but it must have been delicious because my companions polished it all off, lol

    Straws

I was told to refrain from straws due an increased chance of swallowing air. With that said, hospital staff gave me a straw when I got back to my room at the hospital...and I used it. 🤷🏽‍♀️

    Stall?

I went by this criteria as well, though I’d also add inch loss. So NO weight loss AND no inch loss for more than 7 days = STALL. Based on this, I didn’t have any stalls during weight loss phase. But everyone’s mileage will vary. P.S. I weighed every day (and still do) and took my measurements once a week.
