  1. Thanks everyone for your input. I think I am just reading about complications of ulcers etc. and getting a little freaked out. Then I read success stories and I'm ready for it tomorrow.

pain control 1.5 years after GBS

Have you looked into going to physical therapy? There are other modalities like ultrasound as well as exercises and stretches that could help. I would recommend having an eval done by a PT and see if you can get some relief. The PT could also give you some advise for body mechanics, posture etc. to prevent further issues.
  3. I had my 2nd appt. with the nutritionist and asked her about liquid proteins etc. She said starting week 2 it protein form normal sources, even chicken as long as you chew it up well. From what I have read most people seem to be on soft foods for 4-6 weeks. Is that the norm? My other question -- after surgery (months later/long term) can you take an advil? I thought I read something about after Bypass surgery that you couldn't take it. What do I do in 20 years if I have arthritis?

  5. I had to stop taking my GERD medication in prep for the H Pylorie breath test. So I stopped taking the meds and have had terrible reflux. I am in pain with eating almost anything and I still have a few days to go. I need to get back on the medication ASAP. My surgeon said to stop taking the GERD meds for 14 days before the test. If I take the test this Friday it will only be day #13. I can wait until Monday (lab is not open on the weekend) but I am so miserable and don't have any symptoms of H pylorie so I am expecting it to come back negative. Do you think day #13 will be fine. I am dreading waiting an extra few days. So here's my concern. I read on line that you have to stop the mediation for 30 days so me thinking day #13 was good enough is worrying me that 14 days is already pushing an accurate test. Also, the soonest insurance would approve me in January so if it is negative could I likely contract it between now and surgery or is it not that common?

    H Pylorie test

Not sick at all. I have no idea how long it takes to get the results.

    H Pylorie test

So I made it thru the weekend. It's crazy that I can't find a trigger for feeling bad. The doctor's office is hard to get to a nurse. The voicemail message even says they are busy due to trying to process patients and schedule them by the end of the year. I started back on my GERD meds and today was fine. As I was leaving the office I was thinking about how I had to fast for the blood tests but they had me drink this sweet drink for the H Pylorie test and then 5-10 minutes later drew the blood. I'm guessing that in those 5-10 min that my blood wasn't affected. I guess if it comes back with a high blood glucose then that could be the drink.

    Approval questions

I am in the beginning stages. I have a BMI of 36 so I am borderline and per Aetna insurance I need to have a comorbidity. I did a sleep study and the ENT called me and said I have "mild sleep apnea". Has anyone every been told this. Would this qualify me for surgery? He said I didn't need a CPAP, but recommends losing weight and maybe a mouth appliance. I am worried I will go thru the extra time and expense to have all of the things the insurance wants me to do and may end up looking at a cash option or not getting surgery at all until I develop diabetes or another issue down the line. The other question I have. The surgeon (not insurance from what I understand) is having me have a psych eval. I don't have a history of depression, take any psyche meds etc. Are they looking just to see if I am doing the surgery for the right reasons and motivated to make long term changes? Is there a reason I wouldn't pass the eval?
  9. I'm new here. BMI bounces around 34-36 and I don't qualify re other health issues. So I have read the bypass surgery (have GERD so not looking into the sleeve) cost around 10K. Is that inclusive of the hospital stay, surgeon fees etc?
  10. So I am prediabetic (not on meds) and have mild sleep apnea (don't need a CPAP). I am starting the insurance process with a BMI of 36. I am looking into bypass since I have terrible reflux. I have labs, chest xray etc. all scheduled thru the MD that insurance will cover but they are an hour drive away. So now I am on the fence. I am thinking I will pursue the pretesting thru the MD that insurance covers and knowing that insurance will deny surgery due to no comorbidities that I will switch over to a local surgeon. The coordinator said she doubts it would be covered and I can not gain a pound or would get denied and can only lose 3 pounds or my BMI goes to low and also would get denied. That would be if I even got covered to begin with. She said when I get weighed in a gown the morning of surgery after being on a liquid diet for 2 weeks this would likely happen. So now after having a glimmer of hope that it would go thru insurance and realizing that is not an option. I am back to feeling like I'm beating myself up that I'm just being lazy etc that I am even considering a major surgery vs diet and exercise. Then I remember that I have been obese since I was 8 with only a 2 year period at an almost normal weight (but still heavy) and that was with going to the gym 3 hours 6 days a week. I'm just feeling so frustrated. I would never judge anyone else for doing the surgery but I am so hard on myself. I guess I feel selfish that I would risk something happening and my kids not having me around and spending the money. However both of my parents have diabetes, and have had heart attacks so my future health is a concern if I don't do something.
  11. So I am in the preop stages of insurance approval etc. I have been doing research and have a strange question and can't really figure out the answer. Sorry if this is a stupid question. So from what I have read a few months after surgery you will be on solid food and eating a maintenance diet (re. calories, protein etc) for the rest of your life. This will be around 800-1000 calories. So how can people still be 200 lbs. etc years later? If the average person burns a lot more than 1200 calories then that wouldn't eventually a year or 2 after surgery a person would be underweight? Do you increase your calories after a year?
  12. I am just beginning this process. I met with a surgeon and looked into insurance coverage. The insurance company wants me to be under a "physician supervised" weight loss program for 90 days. The surgeon suggested to go to my primary care physician. I have an appointment set up but I am thinking based on previous visits over the years that she will not be supportive of me looking into surgery (BMI is 36 now). I am anticipating that she will just say to diet and exercise as I have done in the past. I want to get the 90 days set up ASAP. Any suggestions for where to go?
