    The Maintenance Thread

Well all of you were right and thank you for the advice. I was getting so anxious about never stalling and steadily losing 2-3 pounds per week and was afraid that despite increasing my calories to 1000 that I was heading into losing too much too quickly. Then with people making comments about getting too small or needing to eat more it messed with my head. I think it was also the fact of mentally not feeling in control of what was happening with my body I felt like I was on a runaway train. It seems that the first 2 weeks of increased calories did nothing and I kept losing but the past 1-2 weeks I have been bouncing around 132-134 (5 ft 2). I am happy where I am right now at but if I could I would like to slowly lose maybe 5-10 over a few months, not weeks and gain some muscle that would be ideal. I also am thinking since I am just now at the 6 month mark that realistically I could see a possible gain of 5-10 pounds on this journey and I want to have some wiggle room if that happens. I had backed off on fitness for fear of losing too much too quickly, so instead I am going to focus on fitness now and keeping calories and carb level where they are and see where that gets me.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

There's no way I could get that many calories in. I was beginning to worry about losing too much too quickly. Weird to think right? My goal was 140, I am now floating around 133/134 but for the past 3 weeks I increased from 700-1000 calories since I have been steadily losing 2-3 pounds per week. It feels like a push to try and get 1000 calories in. People are saying comments about being too thin etc and I am saggy everywhere so I want to maintain here or if I drop another 5-10 slowly I would be ok but I felt like I needed a stall to let my body catch up. I have not been going to the gym much and wanted to get my calories up and weight steady before I push building up muscle so that's what I am concentrating on now. Maybe try to increase slowly towards 1000 calories and see if you can continue weight loss.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

I have been using dry shampoo to extend to 2-3 days between shampooing. As if that will prevent hair from falling out but mentally it keeps me from seeing clumps on the shower floor everyday. I have bought some dry shampoo sprays that are tinted which helps it look fuller.

    Menstrual cycles

OMG. Yes!! Prior I had a typical 5 day period every 28 days. The first one was a week after surgery (early) but not a big deal. Month 2 I thought I would need a blood transfusion. Now it's not regular but every 3-6 weeks, heavier than normal but seems to be getting better. I am only 6 months out so I think your body stabilizes once the rapid weight loss slows.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

I am guessing a lot of us are dealing with hair loss at this point. It happened to me in June suddenly and I don't think it has slowed done at all yet. However I noticed something weird today. I have gray roots and normally color my hair every 4-5 weeks. I colored my hair literally 2 1/2 weeks ago and suddenly I have a ton of half inch roots all over. So on closer inspection I noticed that I have a ton of baby hairs growing too. I think my hair may be growing in quicker now and that the roots are showing so much sooner. I am trying to focus on that instead of freaking out about the clump on the shower floor or in my brush. I also tried Toppik and like it better than sprays I have tried before. I have Biotin in my multivitamin that I have been taking form day 1 and started using Nioxin shampoo a few weeks ago. Maybe it is helping.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

I had dumping twice early on. Once from eating refried beans to quickly. The other was from taking a quick gulp of flavored MOM which must of had sugars in the flavoring. Ever since I have been too scared to try sweets. I have had a few crackers or low carb crackers a few times, or one regular chip etc. but that's maybe 1-2x week. I have eaten literally 1 piece of pasta a few times to check if it was done when I was cooking it but otherwise I am way to scared to try.

    Protein shakes

It's not as sweet and seems to digest easier. I even put it in a thermos with some ice to help thin it out and it helps me increase my fluids.
  8. I started to lose a lot at month 4. Now at month 6 it doesn't seem to have slowed. I know a lot of people on here say it's not noticeable to others etc. I have thin hair to begin with and its very noticeable. I tried a few sprays but they appear too dark. I am going to try the next shade up. I also might buy the brand Toppik. I might be able to try and flip my part but I am starting to freak out a little. When does it slow down? When does it start to grow back. I have been my multivitamin which has Biotin, getting my protein etc. I am going to start extra biotin and have already been using Nioxin. I am afraid to try clip in hair that it would damage the hair I still have left.

    Protein shakes

I’m 6 months and can drink one in 20-25 minutes if I push myself. However I prefer to mix it with a cup of milk and take 45-60 minutes
  10. Even though you may not need it now I would see if you can get a cheap walker or at least a cane from a local goodwill store. I think being in pain meds post surgery and having a IV would be too tricky to use crutches. That would at least take pressure off your ankle so you could walk. If you can get a knee scooter that may work too. If you find you can’t walk as much then just sit on the edge of the bend and march and kick you legs. Movement is really important to prevent blood clot. If you do get a cane etc practice using it before surgery so that afterwards in pain medicine it’s not new and awkward.
  11. I’m curious from what I’ve read once you get down past your goal you typically rebound up 5 to 10 pounds or 5 to 10%. Where does that weight settle at? Did it go back to your hips, stomach, chest everywhere?

I am curious since we are similar heights and surgery dates. Has your weight loss stalled or slowed yet? I started at 195 and am now 133. Increased calories to 1000 but still losing 2-3#/week. You look great by the way.

Wow. That is crazy. I am sorry you are going thru this. I have had coworkers (that don't know about surgery) say I needed to eat more carbs etc.

Six months post-op+ : The Sophomores Thread

I’m still frustrated. I’ve been working at increasing calories to 1000 to slow down the weight loss. I’m adding nuts and peanut butter since I can’t eat a lot volume wise. I tired half a protein bar. I felt fine but the past few days I have been having more BMs and dropped another pound. I’m thinking maybe it’s the increased fats? Any suggestions for slider foods that are higher calorie. I’m eating a ton of 4% yogurt, milk etc. at this point I’m tempted to purée meat to drink 🤢
  15. I just got the results of my blood test (it's after hours so I can't call the MD until tomorrow or Monday). Everything came back fine except my Vitamin B-12 was really high. It said over 2000 but didn't give a number with the normal range of 232 - 1045. I also had a high RWD of 17.2 with normal 12.3-15.4%. I looked online and it seems that because my MCV value is normal that it could be a folate, iron or B12 deficiency. So I'm guessing its iron/folate. Did anyone else have this? Did your MD have you increase iron supplements?
  16. I'm right at 6 months. I was for the past few months right at 60-65 g of protein and getting about 650-700 calories. I am below weight goal so I'm trying to maintain and not lose so I just increased calories to 1000 the past 2 weeks but I'm still losing 2#/week.

Can I officially join? I am 10 days away but am below my goal and trying to slow or stop the weight loss. I never in my life thought I would ever stress about losing too much weight.

    The Maintenance Thread

How many calories a day do you average for maintenance? I know it varies based on activity etc but what is the ballpark average? I’m trying to settle towards maintenance but so far pushing to get 1000 calories and weight loss hasn’t slowed a bit. I was at 600-700/day. It’s been almost 2 weeks of the higher calories. I’m so frustrated. I have even decreased my activity. It’s so crazy that it’s the opposite of what you try your entire life!

    The Maintenance Thread

I thought I mentally was in a better place. I feel like I’m losing too quickly. BMI is 22/23 I think. I was feeling like I had some control, increased my calories to around 1000 to slow down the loss. Then today I’m suddenly down 2 pounds. I saw coworkers today that I don’t see but maybe monthly. A few (not knowing about surgery) made comments re not needing to lose more via dieting etc. Now from both the 2 pounds loss and comments I’m back to feeling anxious again. I feel like all day I’m focusing on food to try and get in enough calories.
  20. Yikes!! So we can only absorb 500mg at a time so do you take the calcium pills or chews separate from protein shakes or yogurt?

    Biotin affects lab results??

Biotin causes sleep issues? Hmm that’s been an issue with me lately.
  22. I went in for labs and saw a notice there that Biotin could affects lab results. I tired to look it up but didn’t find what results are affected? Anyone know details?

    The Maintenance Thread

OMG. Thank you so much for writing this post!!! I totally feel like I shouldn't be complaining but I am having anxiety about losing too quickly. I haven't had a stall and mentally I go into this weird unrealistic fear that I am going to have to get a NG tube for feedings since if it doesn't slow down I will be underweight in 2 months. I feel like I look healthy now, maybe a little "thick" but normal. I am barely in the healthy BMI (5'2.5 and today at 135.8, BMI of 21.6) however I feel already like I shouldn't lose but MAYBE another 5-10 pounds max, It does feel like I can't control it. I feel like I am almost sabotaging myself by forcing myself to eat when I am never hungry, eating more than I feel like to try to gets towards a half cup volume of food and all day I feel a little dread that I need to go get something else to eat to get calories in. I am trying to get 1000 calories now but closer to 800-900 the past week and still dropped 2-3 pounds! I also feel like I wish I could eat a muffin or something to get calories in. I had RNY and my MD program has potatoes but no bread, pasta, oatmeal etc. So nothing is high calorie. I am drinking 2% milk to try and increase. I have eaten a 1/4 cup of walnuts twice this past week but I think it upsets my system (maybe too much fat) I feel a little nauseated later. I think the thing that scares me is I read you should be losing 5 lbs/month after month 3 and you keep losing for 12-18 months. I will disappear before then. That's why even though I could lose another 5-10 and still be fine re BMI I feel like I need to get a handle on it now. Thank you again for posting. You helped me more than you will ever know!!!

What is your % or grams for a daily goal of carb, protein, fats? I am going to try to get around 900-1000 calories and not sure what the macros should be.

    What the hell..??? No Ulcer..???

If it is your gallbladder they typically do an ultrasound to check for stones. That could look fine but the next step is a HIDA scan to check to function of the gallbladder. If it is below a certain % then it comes out.
