    The Maintenance Thread

I saw the surgeon and nutritionist yesterday. They were both happy with where I am at. I stood on a scale that measures muscle and body fat etc. Luckily according to it I have only lost a half pound of muscle in 6 months. I just started back to lifting more weights last month so I am confident I will get back or improve where I was initially anyway. It said for peak ratios I should lose 3.5 pounds so I am not going to purposely try to drop weight but if a few pounds comes off slowly over the next few months I am not going to stress about it. I also am going to watch that the pounds don't go up. The scale said my BMR was 1300 calories. I am getting around 1000 now and have been the same 1-2 pounds for 3 weeks now but the nutritionist said my body is probably still in a starvation mode and will probably level out in the next few months. She anticipates that my level will be around 1200 calories to maintain long term. She said long term on 1200 calories I should be at 40% carbs, 30% protein and 30% fat. Right now that seems so high in carbs. The nutritionist suggested I start adding in some more carbs slowly. Things like a half cup of oatmeal or a half piece of grainy toast to get extra fiber. That just seems crazy to me at this point so I will have to test that. The hand outs all say to wean away from protein shakes but they were both fine with me drinking 1 a day indefinitely. Their concern is that it's a slider and if my appetite increases then it would be better to get protein from food that fills me up but at this point to get my calories and protein in it it's fine. I talked to the MD abut hair loss and he said there are so many probiotics etc that get destroyed with surgery as well as the low calorie and protein that it affects you for awhile. We talked about supplements and he said a probiotic would be beneficial. He also personally likes to Coromega liquid to get more Omegas in. Has anyone tried these? He said to come back at 9 months or wait until the 1 year mark. My blood work was fine so we will check it in Feb. and annually there after. I asked them about long term issues and complications. They both said when people stop vitamins or go into the hospital for other issues and don't get the vitamins it can cause issues but they felt like I had a handle on everything.

    Peanut butter?

Initially I had the PB powder mixed into milk or yogurt. you can mix it with water to make a great tasting peanut butter too. I am in maintenance now so 1-2 times a week I will eat 1 tablespoon of peanut butter if I need the calories and protein. Early on I would even put 2-3 tablespoons of cool whip in a bowl and sprinkle the PB powder on top and sometimes add a teaspoon of sugar free Hershey syrup so I felt like I was eating a peanut butter ice cream treat.

Can you suck on a sugar free breath mint?

    Incision Care

My started peeling around 2 weeks but the areas where to glue stayed on closer to 4 weeks have healed better (lighter in color and thinner scar). My suggestion would be to try and not peel the glue off. I was allowed to shower after a few days but I would lightly rub my soapy hand over the incisions, I didn't use a sponge or washcloth over them.
  5. If you want to avoid creams and lotions you can try putting an ice pack wrapped in a towel. It will numb the area slightly and help with the itching.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

Initially my doctor and Nutritionist counted protein shakes and even yogurt towards my 64 ounce goal. I don’t count the yogurt now but still count the shakes and milk toward my fluid ounce goal. I still barely make 50-60 oz/day. Do you count all fluids or only water?

    February 2019 weight loss buds

I wonder if you helped her divide sweet treats like the candy into tiny portions and have her see if she can have control over portion size. Maybe 10 M and Ms? We all know that the first bite or 2 are the best and after that you just mindlessly eat the rest of a serving or bag.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

It was terrible and sudden in June at the 4 month mark. I try to go 2 days sometime s 3 between washes and I am super gentle. I spray an oil on it and use a wide tooth comb. I don't dry it hard with a towel, I comb it form the ends up to not snag a knot. The shower drain had a clump every time and I still pulled off a lot from the comb each day. Now it is not a huge clump in the drain but still a lot in the comb. I also will see one hair hanging and when I touch it more come out with it. I noticed I have terrible roots and it is baby hairs that are almost an inch long so even thought I am losing a lot there is hope that some is growing back already.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

Maybe it's just a fluke but I washed my hair and had less shedding. It was sudden and really bad at the 4 month mark and has been a steady loss ever since. I am hoping maybe I went thru the worst of it and it will start slowing down now. Fingers crossed!

    The Maintenance Thread

I agree that the scale jumps around a lot. My weight has been within the same 1-2 pounds for the past few weeks but I just took measurements and I am down 1/4-3/4 of an inch so obviously I am building up muscle and loosing fat and my body shape is changing. My jeans and shorts (and bra unfortunately) are also suddenly looser at the same weight.

    What’s your favorite protein shake

I would also suggest buying Fairlife milk. Initially it was hard for me to drink the shakes so I added a little of the milk (it’s higher protein) to make the shakes taste better. I still add a few ounces of milk even now.

    Post op foods help please

Protein flavored water. I think I bought it at Walmart. It kind of has a dry after taste. It tasted better ice cold (to me at least).

Anyone else NOT NPO for surgery?

I had NPO. After midnight however 2 hours before surgery I had to drink this high carb juice they provided. My surgeon has been practicing for 20 years so maybe it’s old school? There was a rational but I don’t remember the details.

    1400 calories for maintenance

I’m only 6 months out. I felt like it was coming off too quick and I was already below my goal at 5 months. I increased from 600/700 to 1000 and still lost 2-3 pounds for the first week or so. Now I have maintained the same weight the past 2 weeks on the same 1000. So it may take a few weeks at the higher calories and I am assuming higher carbs to really judge where your body settles.

    The Maintenance Thread

I’m 6 months post bypass. The most volume of food I can eat in a 15-20 minute sitting is 1/3 to maybe 1/2 cup. Today I had 1 egg, about 1/4 cup of veggies and shredded cheese on top. The veggies cook down so it’s a half cup. I can eat half of it in a few minutes then have to wait and come back 10-15 minutes later to finish it. If I eat yogurt I can get a cup that’s 5-6 oz in 5 -10 minutes easily. Is this about the same for you?
  16. I was the same 36/35 BMI. I ate salty food the night before MD appts and wore heavier clothes. I also made afternoon vs morning appointments. It’s crazy but if I had randomly lost 4-5 pounds per the scale at an early morning appointment then it would have messed up insurance. Everyone bounces around a few pounds all day long and I didn’t want to happen to be too close to the cut off when the doctor measured my weight knowing if he weighed me an hour later it would probably be up again. They did weigh me the morning of surgery and had warned me early on that if I slipped under 34.9 that my insurance wouldn’t cover it. My weight did fluctuate a few pounds during the 6 months but was always above 35 BMI.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

I would love for my cheeks to be full and youthful. People say I look younger but I feel like I have an old lady face and neck now.

    Burping

I only do if I eat or drink too quickly or if I eat too much.
  20. I remember hearing no citrus or apple skins ever too.
  21. 2Bsmaller18

    Nuts

I can eat nuts and nut butters too. The dietician did say be careful initially since they are harder to digest.

Can I dump 2 hours after?

When I eat fruit I try to eat a little yogurt or 2 pieces of walnut with it so I have protein and fat mixed with the carbs. If I rarely eat fruit by itself it's only 1 strawberry or a 1/4 cup of blueberries.

    SWEET JESUS MY HAIR!!!!!

I am right at 6 months post. It started suddenly at month 4, and hasn't slowed down. I take the vitamins as directed, got my protein in etc. It didn't matter. I started using Noixin shampoo about a month ago. I also tried colored dry shampoo sprays and Toppik that definitely help. However I am now used to not seeing my scalp and after I wash it it looks terrible since then I see my naked scalp and my hair looks even thinner. On a good note I color my hair every 4-5 weeks and a few weeks ago I noticed that I had really visible roots and it was only 2 weeks since my last color. I looked closer and noticed I had a ton of baby gray hairs. So even though it is still falling out much more than normal at least I see new hair coming in. I am guessing it will look thinner as I keep losing a lot of hair until the new hair gets long enough. I am doing everything possible to keep the hair I have. I only wash it every 2-3 days, use a wide tooth comb starting at the ends to not pull out any additional hair. At least fall is around the corner and I can start wearing a cute hat.

    Where are my water guzzlers?

At 6 months post I can’t guzzle water if I have eaten in the past 1-2 hours. I can drink maybe 3-4 oz every few minutes about 90 min after eating. If I ate 30 minutes ago I can drink maybe 1-2 oz at a time with 5-10 minutes between but if it’s too much or too fast I burp and stop.

    When could you tolerate salad?!

I tired salad last week. Maybe a half cut of lettuce cut up into small pieces. It went ok so I will try it at home a few more times before I try it out and about. I am trying to get more vitamin dense veggies but have restriction still so I started sautéing a cup of spinach that cooks down into nothing then adding an egg to scramble together. I can get the egg and spinach eaten in about 20-30 minutes.
