July 22 surgery date - Revision from VSG to RNY
relaxrelaterelease posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
It has been a long time since I posted on this forum. I was sleeved in October 2018 and immediately began suffering from reflux/GERD (which I did not have prior to sleeve). Fast-forward 2 1/2 years later, loads of PPI's, EGD's, barium swallows, scans, scopes and referrals, I was finally advised by a surgeon that my best option is to have revision of the sleeve to the bypass. I have a mid grade hiatal hernia and severe GERD. It's gratifying to finally get some answers and while I am looking forward to some relief, I am a bit anxious about the surgery. I relocated from Houston to Dallas, TX in May. I consulted with a new bariatric surgeon on May 26th. Once the ball got rolling, everything went pretty quickly. After thoroughly reviewing my previous surgery and medical records along with additional testing, she determined that in addition to the hernia and GERD, my original pouch from the VSG wasn't as small as it should have been! That explains why I had such slow and minimal weight loss. I lost about 40lbs total, and have regained 20lbs back since COVID. Has anyone had revision from VSG to RNY with hiatal hernia repair due to GERD? If so, has your GERD improved and how has the weight loss been? -
July 22 surgery date - Revision from VSG to RNY

Hi there! I am so sorry for the late reply.......life has been challenging this past month. Did you have your surgery in August? I hope you did and that all is well. Please let me know. I am doing well....still no reflux! My weight loss is much slower than I would like. I weighed 225 on July 15th when I started the pre-op liquid diet and lost 6 lbs. On surgery day, July 22nd, I weighed 218. So I have lost 18lbs in 7 weeks and a total of 25lbs. My surgeon reminded me that my goal is to lose a total of 50-60lbs so I've actually lost about 50% of my goal. That perspective turned around my thinking and I am more optimistic. I am currently in a 9 day stall. Hopefully I will enter the 100's soon. I am going to increase my water intake, exercise and protein this week and pray the scale moves downward. -

Oh I feel your pain! I am so happy to report that I have not experienced any GERD at all since my surgery. Thank God. I hope that you get approved for the surgery you rightfully deserve. Be well! -
What Led To Revision
relaxrelaterelease replied to dennydenco's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I was revised from the sleeve to bypass last Thursday due to severe GERD and a hiatal hernia. Within about a month or two of being sleeved, I began developing reflux. It took almost 2 years to consult with a specialist who confirmed that I had developed GERD (and over time the hiatal hernia) due to the sleeve surgery. Please be your best advocate and speak up if you feel something isn't right. I took very potent PPI's for almost 3 years and that led to damage to my esophagus. I feel so much better already, and I am losing weight as well! -
July 22 surgery date - Revision from VSG to RNY

I’m home, only stayed at hospital overnight. The surgery was long (4+ hours) due to scarring and adhesions from previous surgeries. Since the surgery started 2 hours late and went over 4 hours, I didn’t get on the floor until 8pm. The surgery went well, hiatal hernia was repaired, pouches size resized to 2 ounces and revision from sleeve to RNY completed. I’ll be on full liquids for the next 2 weeks, which is good bc my throat is very sore and it’s hard to swallow right now (had multiple EGD’s during surgery). I am so happy that I’ve had the revision surgery bc I haven’t had any episodes of GERD! Hopefully I will lose some weight as well. I hope everyone is doing well and have great results!! -

So I’m here at the hospital on my surgery Day! I’m an prepped and as soon as my surgeon comes in, I’ll then be taken to the OR for anesthesia and for surgery to begin. I can’t wait to be reflux free and pray this revision will be the key. Wish me luck! FYI: I only did the pre-op liquid diet for 7 days and lost 6lbs. For my records I am posting my weights: HW- 250-252 10/18 VSG - 242 LW - 202 7/21 RNY - 218 -
I was "sleeved" in October 2018, and didn't have any GERD/reflux issues before that. Within 2 weeks of surgery, I began experiencing a burning sensation in my chest, difficulty swallowing and constant belching. The surgeon assured me this was all normal and my pouch was just adjusting. Eventually, he put me on Dexilant 30mg for 1 month. The meds definitely helped, but shortly after I stopped taking it the symptoms came back. Now almost 3 years later, I have severe GERD and a hiatal hernia. I am having revision from VSG to Roux-en-Y and hiatal hernia repair next week. I wish that I had been more vocal about my concerns in the beginning and encourage you to do the same. Extended PPI use can cause all sorts of issues including bone loss and cancer. I hope you find some relief. Take care!

October 2018 Sleevers

October 31st sleever update......My surgery went well, I had an umbilical hernia that was repaired also. The first 24 hours were terrible! I had uncontrollable nausea and gas pain until yesterday afternoon. After adjusting the meds I started feeling better. I haven’t gotten much in the way of liquids down. Hopefully I’ll be able to get a sufficient amount down so I can go home today. I have been experiencing pressure between my breastbone when I tap sips of water. Has anyone else had this experience? If so what was the solution? -

October 31st -I am 9 days out from surgery and I am still super excited. I'm hoping the fears and doubts don't begin to set in as I get closer to that day. I had my 2 week pre-op appointment with my surgeon and the hospital on last Wednesday. I was surprised that I do not have to do the pre-op liquid diet for the entire 2 weeks. I was instructed to eat "clean" and increase water intake and then start the clear liquid diet 2 days before surgery. I have a kidney issue and my doctor felt it best to avoid the super high protein intake that comes with the shakes. SInce I was already mentally prepared for the 2 weeks of liquids, we agreed that I would eat 2 "clean" meals daily and replace 1 meal with the shake until I start the full liquid diet. It's nice to read everyone's experiences/input ahead of my surgery date, as I have gotten some great tips on things I wouldn't have thought of on my own. -
You don't need WLS just go on a diet!

It's so sad that people are so judgmental! My surgery is scheduled for October 31st and so far I've only told my children (all adults), my boyfriend, brother and sister in law. I'm afraid to tell my mother bc she thinks I'm fine as I am. I will tell her beforehand though. Like someone else said earlier, I told my boss and coworkers that I am having a medical procedure done and thats it. It's none of anyone's business especially on the job. I'm taking 2 weeks leave and hopefully I'll be feeling well enough to return full-time. -

Oh wow millerla4 that is awesome! Do you how your surgeon coded your procedure? All I've heard up to now is that AFLAC rejects claims involving gastric sleeve surgery. This is promising...just wish I had the hospital policy! -

I am a newbie and so happy to have found this thread! I am scheduled for October 31st, Halloween day but I am not spooked at all. Estatic is a better word. I also am very apprehensive about sharing my news with certain family members out of fear of judgement....still debating if I will share my plan at all. My SO, brother and children are the only ones I have told and they are super supportive. Again. so glad to have found you all!
