Hi everyone, I asked this on an old thread (I'm new here) but I think it was the wrong spot. I'm due to have my MGB (revision from Lapband) on Oct 16. I have a question about medication. I have a small tablet I have to take every day (not bariatric related). Are you able to take a small tablet immediately after surgery? Or does it need to be crushed? Thanks

Ooh what was it like diluting them with protein powder. I'm guessing it wasn't one of the Creamy type ones? Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal mobile app -

Diabetic Burnout
ummyasmin replied to Queen Grandma's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm a Type2 and had a lapband back in 2009, starting at 153.5 kilos. I lost 20 kgs. However I had a lot of problems (sprung a leak in the tubing in the beginning and it never really worked for me) so I'm having a revision to mini gastric bypass. The thing with my diabetes is I get hypos if I eat high carbs (sugar) and then nothing else for ages. So eg. a croissant for breakfast and then by 1pm I'm having a hypo. My theory is that the body overshoots the insulin for the croissant so I have too much floating around that has nothing to do but send my blood sugar crashing. When I go keto, eg keep carbs to between 20 and 50 grams a day, I simply don't get hypos. So you may find the problem for you is too many high sugary carbs and surgery and limiting your carbs will really help re: hypos. My doc says they perform this surgery specifically to send diabetes into to remission, so it's definitely something to consider. Many blessings Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal mobile app -

Hi Suesloosinit, I'd just be a bit careful with the juice drinks. The point of the protein liquid diet is to cut out sugary carbs so you can deplete the glycogen stores in your liver, and unfortunately juice is essentially liquid sugar. Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal mobile app -

It cant be lactose - can it be sweetners causing my stomach upset?
ummyasmin replied to Separ1418's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
Me too!! I already knew I was lactose intolerant so I'm using LF milk to make up the shakes but my stomach is not used to all the sweeteners and me in diet. I'm just putting up with it because I have finally found shakes that taste half decent. Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal mobile app -

I'm on day five and it's getting easier. There is research that found those who lose I think it was 8% of their excess weight pre-op have much better long term results, if that's motivation. That and find shakes that taste ok Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal mobile app -
Choosing a surgery ...

Choosing a surgery ...
ummyasmin replied to Alpaca55's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There's a little known EU law you might want to try and take advantage of before Brexit called the Cross-Border Healthcare Directive. If you get a referral from your GP, you can have your procedure done straight away anywhere else in Europe (like Belgium, where I am going). You have to pay up front yourself, so some people need to get a loan, but then the home state (in your case, the UK) reimburses you up to the maximum they would have paid if you have had it in the UK. https://www.nhs.uk/using-the-nhs/healthcare-abroad/going-abroad-for-treatment/compare-funding-routes/ So for example I'm in Ireland and the cost of major obesity procedures is capped at €8500 (approx). My band to mini-gastric bypass is approx. €7500 with Belgium Surgery Services so I can get that all reimbursed except not flights (but they are pretty cheap, €20 each way with Ryanair off peak). It's almost like they might have been hoping you'll drop out and they wouldn't have had to pay. Well done you for sticking it out. Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal mobile app -

Well, sigh, yes. But postage rates are through the roof. I wanted to order a sample of BariatricPal's cinnamon swirl protein powder which was €3. Postage was €48. *gulp* Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal mobile app -

Oh man, I'm so jealous of all the Americans who have access to great products (not much here in rural Ireland). Can anybody from UK or IRL recommend the PhD Smart Shakes? I haven't found sample sizes. Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal mobile app
