2 months out and I'm still exhausted
ummyasmin replied to Oct517's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Years ago when I did Pritikin (anyone remember that?) you couldn't have coffee or tea so I developed a taste for boiling water (like you would for coffee or tea) and putting a slice of lemon in it. Pretty good way to get your water in! Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal mobile app -
Anyone NOT taking their vitamins?
ummyasmin replied to sleeveme7781's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Mine said "any multivitamin will do" when I asked what he recommended. So I don't even need to take special bariatric vitamins, except I do coz I want to make sure. I take a once-a-day capsule (UK brand), plus Celebrate calcium plus OTC iron (Galfur), plus biotin and chromium. Can't remember why I'm taking the chromium, I'll probably stop once the bottle runs out. Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal mobile app -

3 1/2 years old - new health challenges ... ugh.
ummyasmin replied to MrsKarenC2008's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Noone can diagnose anyone else but if its not standard issue post-surgery dumping then it can be a precursor to diabetes. It's essentially disregulation of the insulin response. The thing with the time (years?) leading up to type 2 diabetes is that the insulin "key" to unlock the cells to store the sugar stops working as effectively (doesn't fit the "lock") so the body pumps out more and more insulin (leading to hyperinsulinemia) to try and cope. With so much insulin in the blood stream you later get a blood sugar drop that causes hypoglycemia. It may not be diabetes, please God, but following the basic diabetes diet principles (which are very similar to most peeps' WLS guidelines) can only help. I hesitate to give you definitive advice a) because following your surgeon and nutritionist is the best thing to do and I'm a bypass not a sleeve. I eat max. 1000 a day but I've cut out carbs except for non - starchy veggies and beans. So no bread, crackers, pasta, rice, potatoes etc. Plenty of water and firm protein first. The thing I've found with hypos as a diabetic is they happen if I have a long gap between eating. So I would recommend splitting your calories into 3 meals with 3 snacks spaced evenly. Try eating some cheese and/or nuts for your snack (something with a bit of protein), and a smaller meal to balance the calorie load. Eg Breakfast 7.30am, snack 10.30am, lunch 1pm, snack 3.30pm, dinner 6pm, snack 8.30pm. You should still carry some fast absorbing sugar (eg glucose tablets) just in case. And do healthy carbs for your meal eg veggies and beans, mixed with your protein of course. Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal mobile app -
Could you be not eating enough? Like when the body goes into starvation mode and the metabolism essentially slows to a crawl? Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal mobile app

I'm hoping that losing slowly means my skin will have more chance to adjust. I'd also love to know if slow losers get to goal too. Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal mobile app

In the Diabetic world we call them hypos. The difference is usually a timing thing. If you're dumping pretty soon after eating, try and lie down and take it easy for a little bit. If it's more than an hour after eating, your blood sugar may have dropped too low (due to increased insulin response to the sugar you ate earlier). In those cases, I do a spoonful of honey or juice or if I'm out and about I've even done proper (not diet) Coke. You need a bit more sugar in your blood but not too much or you'll start the cycle all over again. Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal mobile app

Oh I feel ya, I did the same thing with Doritos the other day. BUT you can get back in the saddle. Each new day is a chance to do better. So now you know why slider food is called slider food. Back to protein first, leafy greens, plenty of water and no snacking. You got this. Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal mobile app

We need to start a slow losers club. [emoji13] Imma start upping my water intake because @Matt_Z says we should. And I'm also going to try being strict about three meals and no snacking. I would say I'm going to start exercising but that's too big a hurdle for me yet (I hate anything that involves me getting changed into lycra) Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal mobile app

Thank goodness someone else is slow out of the gate. I was starting to wonder whether I'm a statistical outlier. I'm eating way less calories, meeting my protein goals, and yet each lb lost is ever so hard to reach. [emoji24] Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal mobile app

Where to start? I'm 5 and 1/2 weeks out from my bypass revision and God help me, I ate half a bag of doritos last night. Not one of those single serve ones, a big one. I don't normally have them in the house but I've a house guest over so of course I bought some snacks as an excuse. What was even worse was, no dumping, no runs. It was like my body was before surgery. I'm so cross at myself. I've been on a stall and struggling to keep my calories at around 1000-1200 a day, which given I'd eat more like 2000+ before surgery is a huge change, but eating Doritos was a really really really sucky decision on my part. Grrrrrrrrrrr. Sent from my SM-G930F using BariatricPal mobile app
