Hey 50 & over gang We have a new spot
Great2BThin replied to IndioGirl55's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
YAHOO!!! I HIT THE 50 POUND MARK TODAY!!! I am so elated that milestone has been eluding me and teasing me for a week or more. Today I have a well woman exam at my primary care dr who hasn't seen me since pre banding so am anxious to see what he has to say about my weight. You get weighed there even if you go for a throat culture for once I am looking forward to it. Angel, congrats on that pound!! Keep it up!! -
Great article Janet! congrats!! And enjoy your weekend!! As I get in better and better shape stamina wise I will be able to walk to my club house as well, right now I'd never make it both ways. But I can go further than I used to! And I am so excited today.......I HIT 50 LBS LOST!!!!!!! That number has been teasing me for a few weeks now and then the set back of surgery it seemed so far away. I had to get on the scale about 4 times to believe it! I'm anxious to see what my primary care doc has to say today at my well woman exam, I've not seen him since before my lap band surgery. Charlene, Hope your daughter is recovering well.

How Much Have You Lost So Far?
Great2BThin replied to Great2BThin's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Thanks Cathy for the kind words. I've said all I care to say on the matter and won't be responding anymore. As of today, this 50 yr old hit 50 POUNDS LOST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so excited. That number has been eluding me for 2 weeks, I was stuck at 49, then surgery and I gained 8 in the hospital. Exercise has been light since then and finally today I hit it. I had to get on the scale about 4 times to be sure. One time it even showed 51 but I will stay with the 50 as it said that 3 times. I lost 10 of those before my consult with the surgeon on my own while researching surgery. Never would I have thought that I'd lose 50 by now. I can't wait to see where I can be at by the holidays! I'm hoping for a fill next week when I have my post op appt from the gall bladder surgery and to get released to more exercise, as much as I hate exercise. I am sure the gall bladder surgery speeded me along to the 50 as well as I've not had much of an appetite since surgery til the past few days and now I feel I could eat anything and really have to watch myself and my portions. -
If enough is enough, why are you shouting? The whole subject of this thread is not exercising whether it was in the sentence or not. And how do you know what the life experiences are of a 50 yr old to even begin to compare them? I tried apologizing for choosing the wrong word, I've tried wishing you luck, I've tried saying your weight loss is a great accomplishment. So who's picking the fight? We are both banded on the exact same day, this is a place for us both to share our experiences and get and receive support regardless of the path we take. I have nothing to 'get over', I've had a set back of gall bladder surgery, I have bad knees, I am choosing to embrace my obstacles and work around them and I don't consider 50 to be an obstacle. I felt you were comparing yourself to a 50 yr in a bad way, that's all I was saying and I was offended by that. You have no idea what being 50 is like.

Excuse me? Pick a fight? No way. I'm sorry you see it that way. I was trying to say I was offended that you were comparing yourself to a 50 yr old because you weren't exercising. I was only trying to say, not all 50 yr olds are inactive, maybe invalid was a bad word for that I apologize, But I took your comment to mean being 50 was the same as being inactive. No I haven't walked in your shoes, nor you in mine. I have no idea what sleep apnea is like. I do know what bone on bone joint damage is in my knee and how painful every step I take when walking is. I do know how difficult it is to move and begin an exercise regime when you are 100+ lbs overweight. For someone who was just going to 'let it go' you said some pretty harsh things there. I was in no way belittling you and even wished you luck in finding what works for you, just as I have to find exercise/activity that works for me. You should feel great about your weight loss, it's a great accomplishment.

Couldn't find port/Any body Gallbladder problems after surgery?
Great2BThin replied to Redhead1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes when I had my gall bladder surgery I had already had 2 fills. And I am getting a third next week at my post op appt. My nausea was no different than the banding surgery. -
Well, Mekadig, now it is my turn to be offended. I don't like your comment about being 26 and your life experience being like a 50 yr olds. I may be 50 but I am not an invalid yet. I on the otherhand am exercising daily and trying to remain active and I felt that you are saying because you aren't exercising you are like a 50 yr old. How about showing some of that compassion to which you are referring to? But I will try and do what you say you do and take your comment with a grain of salt as well. Good luck to you in finding what works for you.

Couldn't find port/Any body Gallbladder problems after surgery?
Great2BThin replied to Redhead1's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Can't help with the port question but can tell you I just had gall bladder surgery 4 days ago. I was banded 2 mos ago. I had a dull ache in my upper right side that went around to my back sometimes. They sent me for an ultrasound and it showed many sandlike stones, so I had it removed by my same band surgeon. One thing the nurse told me before the surgery and while I was waiting for the ultrasound appt. was if I wanted to know if it was my gall bladder to eat something fatty like a piece of bacon, if the pain got worse it was gall bladder. Not that I am condoning doing that would hate for something bad to happen. I did it though and it did. The pain didn't seem bad enough to me to warrant another surgery so soon, after all I just recovered from banding. However, they said i could have an attack and that would be really painful and I'd be in the ER so I had it taken care of. -
The last of those pesky hospital 8 lbs hit the road today!!! And they took another half with them. Now I'm at 49.5, will I ever see 50??? I know I will but those big milestone numbers seem to make you work all the harder for them. I just got in from a long walk in the neighborhood. the longest I've gone since living here so feel great about that and it was a big hill going as well. I know I need to build some stamina and not just because of the surgery. I went to the mall with my daughter a couple weeks ago and just walking the mall with her wore me out and I was all sweaty. That's ridiculous! I look forward to cooler (cooler not cold) weather soon to be able to go outdoors and walk anytime of day. In fact, we are getting some unseasonalbly cool weather on Friday they are saying in the 60's only, this after our record hot July. go figure!

Hey 50 & over gang We have a new spot
Great2BThin replied to IndioGirl55's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Phyl is back!!! YEA!!!!! Today is the first day I have felt almost normal since my gall bladder surgery on Friday. Still a little sore, incisions now itch like crazy and tire out fast. I just got back from my longest walk in a long time so feel really good about that. It was uphill halfway then down on the return of course. Also, those pesky 8 lbs I gained in the hospital are all gone!!!!!!!!!! They even took another half with them so I am at 49 1/2!! Tomorrow 50???? My kids are meeting for lunch on their lunch breaks (they work practically across the street from each other) and invited me to join them. I might just do that then come home and take my nap! :crying: JB, hope you are feeling better by tonight. Was it white meat chicken? I find that when I eat the white meat I have a much tougher time than if I eat the dark meat. If I have turkey or chicken breast I have to wet is somehow with something like BBQ sauce, a tad bit of gravy, teriyaki sauce etc. -
Just to clarify, my not so good food choices haven't been a free for all either. For example one day I had a Sonic blast (M & M ice cream thing) that was my food for the entire day. My throat was so sore from the tube I guess and the cold felt good on my throat, it took me all day to eat it. And, since Ellen shared her Dr. Phil experience, I'll share mine. Mine was a little different. Before season 2 started, I happened upon his website and they had a call out on there to submit videos to be apart of the show regarding weight loss. I knew nothing about a book coming out or anything. I got a call in early August inviting me down to be part of the audience, they made it sound like I had a chance to be picked as one of the 'challengers' but think they were picked well ahead of the show, after all they arrived with a weeks worth of clothes etc. But we got free copies of his book, and invites back to all the weight loss shows that season. I lived in northern CA at the time and it was an easy flight down to LA, plus I worked for the airlines at the time and flew free. I went the first time with a friend from Weight Watchers, and eventually met another gal from Sacramento as well. We went to most of the tapings. It was at one of those early tapings that I met Ellen. She was such a calming force amongst the drama that was going on behind the scenes with the other audeince members, etc. She really kept me grounded. I had mentioned the the audience co-ordinater that I was keeping a charm braclet to mark my weight loss, every 5 lbs I added a gold star charm to it. Evidently she made note of that and I was asked to share that on air. That was so unreal. We (me and a guest) got on the lot parking passes, a dressing room, make up done, the whole 9 yards. Then they ran out of time and didn't talk to me, but had me come back again and that time I was on the air. We always came the day before and stayed at the same hotel as the 13 challengers and got to know some of them, we'd have dinner the night before and then off to the studios the next morning. It was all a blur but I did learn so much through it. I would've never considered myself an emotional eater before that, and I realized how much I was. After the season and weight loss challenge was over I was alittle disappointed. They never followed up again with the challengers or anything, which makes me wonder how successful everyone was. I moved to Delaware shortly after and had a really tough time missing my kids, being in a not very friendly area and got very depressed and gained about 50 lbs back. I still get out the book though once in awhile and go over some of the things I learned.

I didn't have to do a liquid diet so am no help there. However, I got real nervous and scared about 2 days before surgery wondering what I was doing to myself etc. I think that is very normal, this is considered an elective procedure and all for the most part, though i considered it necessary for my health and well being. I just tried to rely on Phil 4...be anxious for nothing...... and also rationalized with myself that I had put a lot of thought and prayer into this, had numerous pre op tests to be sure it was safe and that I made the decision with a much more rational mind than I was in at the time 2 days before surgery. By the day before and morning of, I had such a peace about my decsion and am so glad I went forth with it.

thanks for checking up on me Janet! I feel like I have turned the corner in my recovery. I feel much better this morning, have taken nothing for the pain since yesterday morning. Still really weak and tired but that improves slowly as well. Still having pain but it's bearable. The thing that's driving me the most nuts is those pounds I gained in the hospital, 8 of them. I did after lap band too and figured it was due to the IV fluids, swelling, etc. And after banding it was gone in a day or so, not this time 5 are gone but 3 are hanging on still. GRRRRR I was 49 and wanting to hit 50 so bad and now I have 4 more to go. But I'm not changing my ticker! Some of my food choices haven't been the best, but I've had no appetite and eaten very little. I know I need a fill as I can eat too much and plan on getting one on teh 20th at my post op check up.

How Much Have You Lost So Far?
Great2BThin replied to Great2BThin's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Cathy, I was losing so well. I have hit a bump in the road with this gall bladder surgery. I came home from the hospital 8 lbs heavier. I did after banding too but it was gone right away. Today is 4 days since surgery and only 5 have vanished. But I'm not changing my ticker!! These too shall pass eventually. Some of my food choices during recovery weren't the best but I hardly ate any of it either. No appetite, til today and now I'm starving. I know I need another fill and hope to get one on the 20th when I go in for my post op visit. I didn't put a picture of me on here as I wasn't ready to be recognized yet. Not sure if anyone I know would frequent this board but you never know. I've told folks I've had the surgery so it's not a big secret for the most part, but am uncomfortable knowing they could be reading what I post. -
Me do a muddy buddy? Something drastic would have to change in me for me to ever want to do something like that. But then again, who knew I'd ever want a bike??? I've discovered this journey is about way more than just weight loss as my body transforms so does my head in many ways. So will keep in open mind!

I had a dull ache in my upper right side, that went around to my back at times. It was enough that I mentioned it to the nurse that she sent me for an ultrasound of it and sure enough there were stones. We caught it in time so I had no major attack. She said one way to find out for sure if it was my gall bladder was to eat something fatty, if the pain was worse it was the gall bladder. I did, and it did. now if it would only heal up like now and stop hurting! I'm not very patient in recovery this time, it's only been 2 mos since my banding surgery. I will have spent most of the summer recuperating.
-
Those are my stats too! I put my goal as 169 though as the BMI chart I was using still showed 170 as overweight and 169 as normal, but I'll be very happy with 170!! Right now my goal is to get under 250 so that I am closer to the 100's than the 300's. Before my hospital gain of 8 lbs I was only 6 lbs away from that. those phantom 8 lbs better hit the road soon!!
-
Good morning. I just got back from walking around my block 2 times!! YAHOO!! The day after surgery I could only go part way. Today I went with a neighbor who is also recovering from a surgery and we got to gabbing and before I knew it I did 2 times. I'm wiped out now though, but it did seem to help my pain some so that is good! I have so many dr. appts the next couple weeks. I had scheduled a well woman exam months ago and it's this Thurs. I suppose I will still go, then next Monday is the hospitals 3 mos and out post bariatric surgery class, then Wed is my post op gall bladder appt. and then the next Tues. my 3 mos post op lap band appt. I am going to ask if they can combine the last 2 into one and get a fill. But am not cancelling anything til I know for sure. I will have now spent almost the entire summer recovering from surgery. Hopefully the scale will start moving again soon, only 3 of the 8 I gained in the hospital are gone so far. GRRRRR I think my belly is pretty swollen though.

Hello, Junes!! I am 2 days post op again! Just had my gall bladder out on the 8th. So am back into recovery mode all over again. Have no appetite so not eating much but did have some icecream. Good thing I'm not eating much as those calories shocked me when I entered in daily plate. And I'm not even much of an ice cream eater. LOL I am also into cleaning and redecorating. The week before my surgery, DH installed new hardwood and sanded down all the existing then refinished it all to match. Dust was everywhere in the house so I got a lot of it before surgery and then all weekend hubby has been cleaning and moving furniture back in etc. so it's looking good.

Janet, you are on a roll today in your inspiring thoughts. Though they were meant for someone else, they spoke volumes to me. Ellen, thinking of you today. Well I am 2 days out from surgery. The pain is subsiding some. Still much more pain than I ever had with the band, but then considering I hardly had no pain with the band any pain would be more. I'm only taking liquid Tylenol now though as those darn pain pills kept me awake, fuzzy in the head, and didn't do much anyway. And I've now been sleeping the days away a 3 or 4 hour nap each day after about 11 hours of sleep at night. This too shall pass I am sure. I can hardly eat much. But I have been able to eat some Sonic M & M Blast. that felt so good on my throat, which is sore I take it from the tube. Now with the small amount I'm eating I'm hoping those 8 lbs the hospital gave me disappear!! LOL I got up this morning intending to go to church, I got dressed in a 2X outfit I just bought at the beginning of summer, I can hardly keep the pants on!!! YAHOO!! Never made it to church, just getting ready wore me out.
-
Good morning. Pain is a tad better today. OMG did it hurt last night. So I took 2 pain pills (dosage was one or two every 4 to 6 hours) they helped a little but I couldn't sleep at all. Read the label this morning, sleeplessness is a side effect. So I'm trying to go with just liquid tylenol so I can get some rest in today. Of course I didn't sleep well night before surgery, had to get up at 4am to get to the hospital by 530 and then about an hour or two last night is it. DH says I am getting around and looking so much better than I did after banding but I feel much worse, interesting. he's being great though. He's cooking a turkey today to get it out of the freezer and he loves turkey left overs. he better, it's 20+ pounds nd just the 2 of us and I'm hardly eating anything. 3 of teh 8 lbs I gained yesterday and gone, 5 to go!!

I asked and the nurse told me, believe or not 2 to 3 oz is all! BUMMER! And I weighed myself when I got home expecting a gain from the fluids, gas, swelling. Oh I got a gain!...8 POUNDS!! But as many trips as I am making to the bathroom, that should be gone in no time! :cool2: -
If someone other than a June 08 poster has advice to help me, by all means answer my posts here!! you've paved they way and know what works!!

I just read the posts I was behind on and can't remember a thing I read. Blame it on the drugs. I do know I read about Ellen's friend, and Ellen I am thinking of you and praying for you. Forgvie me for reposting what I posted at the 50's but am really groggy still: I am home and less one gall bladder! Surgery went well, forgot to ask the dr. why I ended up with 4 incisions instead of 3 but 3 of the 4 he used my band ones so no biggie. He also said my band and port looked great and were in good position. When he went to talk to my husband and in laws after surgery he told DH that I couldn't do housework for 1 yr!! Love it! My MIL got a kick out of and and asked him what procedure he could do on her. I'm in quite a big of pain at where I presume my gall bladder was, it is like the dull ache I had before surgery but much much more intesified. No gas pains again! Love that! he's good at sucking taht all back out. I'm so tired and groggy but I go to bed for hours and lie there and can't sleep. Just had some soup and that tasted good. Thanks again for all the prayers and good wishes! I'm on the road again.......
