    I'm here to help...

Thanks, Arlene, you are the 2nd person to mention Miralax. Think I will brave the stores and go get some. HOw much do you take? just follow the instructions on the bottle? Does drinking a big glass of Water before bed bother your band? or does it go straight through? I'm wondering if it would be thicker than water to drink. I heard some folks had trouble drinking Metamucil with their bands.
  2. Can you believe Dec. marks our 6 month band anniversaries? I've seen some other threads in other months where they take monthly weight loss polls so thought that would be fun and added it to this thread. Also, they've posted what they've learned about band life and themselves. So please post in the poll what you've lost and post what you have learned. I remember 6 mos ago today I was so nervous and now I am so thrilled.

I need to talk constipation, excuse the topic and bluntness. Since banding, I've had issues in that area but normally can resolve them with stool softners, fiber tablets etc. But it seems to be getting worse and harder and harder to relieve. I am now taking Colace stool softners daily (dr office said this was okay), taking 4 fiber tablets a day, and going to up my water. Last night my husband went to the store for an enema, which luckily I ended up not needing. I guess I am needing more fiber??? I don't get much, and maybe things might, ummm, soften up with more water so am making efforts to double my intake there. Any other suggestions? And when it happens how do you relieve things? Sorry to talk about such an unpleasant topic. My fiber intake went down, when I uppped the protein due to hair loss and wasn't getting the minimums there.

Hey 50 & over gang We have a new spot

Congrats on your band, Mary. As for craving garlic toast, not sure how normal that is. I had no cravings but what's normal for one person may not be for another. I was very lucky, no gas pains, and was up and about to pretty much normal in a couple days. AS for the full feeling, I find my 'full' feels different now than it did prebanding. You will have to get used to what your body's signals are. I get a full/tight feeling in my upper stomach or chest area. I've read that some get a feeling in their back. I also start burping a lot. Sometimes I have that 'full feeling' but my head doesn't and I still want to eat. When I listen to my head and not my stomach, that's when I get myself into trouble. I find that especially hard this time of year when there are so many tempting goodies out there that you don't see the rest of the year. I find myself with the mentality of, 'if I don't have it now, it will be gone til next year'. DUH!! Last night it was crab legs. They were so good, rarely have them and I ate one too many and felt it for quite some time after dinner. Now why couldn't I cook crab legs another time of year? Stupid head, keeps trying to trip me up!

Greetings, having trouble with the fonts and colors I was trying to be creative and be festive but got orange instead and the screen won't stay up long enough for me to change it. Oh well. Well, Janet, you asked about my day and said after hitting 91 I am probably not even tempted to stray. Well.....I'm up 1.5 today, does that say anything? I had a brunch on Thurs. and parties on Fri and Sat. night. The Fri party wasn't a problem it was in a restaurant and I could order what I wanted. However, Thurs the bruch was very difficult. I didn't bring any food with me, these folks have no idea I am banded though most know I am losing weight, well they all should, 90 lbs isn't easy to miss, but there's one gal there that wouldn't comment on it even if she did notice. She's been very unsupportive of my weight loss, she is overweight herself so I don't know if I make her uncomfortable or what. Anway, I expected at a brunch for the to be eggs at least. Everything was bread, the main dish was a French toast casserole, there were muffins, sandwiches, etc. The sandwiches had chicken salad in them and I took the salad out and had that but left not satisfied for the number of calories the salad cost me. Last night's party was a pot luck type thing and everything was pasta or bread again. I had a few mini weinies and then too many cookies and brownies. Here I'm not even a sweet person and ate that. DUH!! Oh well, I'm not changing the ticker, I will work on being mindful through the holidays and won't sweat it too much. In the past I'd gain 10 to 15 lbs from Thanksgiving to New Years, this year I am still down. This too shall pass and I will be completely on track after the holidays and make wise choices through them. I have set a mini goal to reach 100 by Valentines, it seems doable right now, I've settled into a losing pace of about 5 to 7 a month. That's 9 lbs in a little over a month and a half. Oh and the rec center is doing Biggest Loser again come January and I will be entering again. Today I am going to my sisters for a Christmas dinner, she is serving crab so I should be good there. They haven't seen me since Oct. Then all my parties etc. are over with until Christmas eve and Christmas. And I am going to work in the morning with my workout clothes in tow! Must keep that up during this season. Charlene, yep nuts!! Too bad you can't take some of our zero temps with it to keep the snow cold. Apples, I always tell my husband he looks sexiest when he's cleaning!

    Daily News!

WooHOo!! I hit 91 lbs lost last Thurs. only to regain a pound this weekend, but the ticker stays! Since that day I've had some event or another every day. A brunch on Thurs., a party on Fri, Sat. and my sister's Christmas tonight. I've had a few 'extras'. Also I find I do great when I go out to eat at restaurants etc. but not so good when I go to potluck type events. There's never much there that I can eat. The brunch almost everything had bread in it, I didnt' bring anything thinking there'd at least be eggs. I did take some chicken salad out of a sandwich and had that but didn't care for it and left hungry. The 2 parties I ended up eating things like cookies. LOL Not good! Tonight I know my sister is having crab so I should be good there. I am normally not a sweets eater but I am finding myself being way too tempted by them this year. But alas, in years past I'd have gained 10 lbs by now since Thanksgiving, instead this year I am down at least half that since Thanksgiving. I will cut myself some slack through the holidays, keep up the exercise and then go strong til goal after that. I set myself a mini goal of hitting 100 by Valentines day, that's 9 lbs in a month and a half. Should be doable, I seem to average about 5 to 7 lbs a month now. Allie, sorry about the loss of your uncle, sounds like a sad situation. Strike, you've made me want to go to Victorias and get a good proper fitting bra. I have mixed feelings though after years of not being able to get something there I'd love to walk in and know things fit me, on the ohter hand, when I have been in the store at my heaviest with my daughter etc. they act like 'what are you doing here' and hate to spend money there after their attitude. But I am sure I'll go there. Gina, beautiful picture! Katies, congrats on the loss, here's hoping you are in your 2 week losing phase! Chatty, how were the parties? did you handle your's better than I did mine?

Hey 50 & over gang We have a new spot

Flowers, good luck in your shopping. The cruise sounds wonderful, even more so if it was free! As for NYC, some folks still dress up for the Broadway shows but many don't. Just about anything would fit in. I just usually wore dress slacks and a dressy blouse or sweater, depending on the season. I had to be very mindful of the shoes as we typically would be doing a lot of walking around before and after the show and couldn't do it in heels or something. BlkLab, I think you have to have an IV in case of an emergency or something and it is also how they adminster a lot of the medications. But I do believe you can ask them to put it in the arm, but guess it would depend on the hospital/surgeon/or nurse doing it. I hate them in the hand too, to me it was the worst thing about the surgery. I also love Gilroy. There was also a cute winery there that I got a bottle of "rottie red' in honor of my rottweillers we had at the time. I never opened it and keep it in a place of honor on my wine rack (kitchen is decorated in grapes and winery things. Janet, my starting BMI was around 43, so not sure that is considered high. It was to me!! It's 31 something now and I can't wait to be under 30 and be 'just overweight' and no longer 'obese'. It was also a big deal to be under 40 and be just obese and not morbidly obese. Does anyone else think that BMI chart is unfair. I mean over 40 to 50 is morbidly obese. then it's 30 to 40 for 'obese'. Then it's just a window of 5 from 25 to 30 to be overweight. I mean really couldn't we have a bigger overweight window? :tongue_smilie: And the normal window is smaller too. What's up with that??

Hey 50 & over gang We have a new spot

I sure don't mean to make anyone feel bad by posting my stats. I don't know why I am losing so well, but am absolutely thrilled. I do really watch my portions and food choices, etc. I just wanted to show the original poster that I am 50 and am doing great. However, you did say you were dieting. To me diet is a bad word, I've been there done that so many times. I am really trying to look at this as a lifestyle change, something I have to change permanently not just til I get to goal. You are doing great. For your cruise, I don't think April would be too last minute to get clothes, though have never shopped Ebay, is their shipping really slow? We are thinking of a cruise in the spring too. Am holding off on booking anything as I also need to go to FL more than likely as my grandma is turning 100 and am awaiting to see what plans out for that.

Hey 50 & over gang We have a new spot

Welcome BlkLab. I have 2 black lab mixes one is 1/2 lab and 1/2 viszla and the other 1/2 lab and half Australian Shepherd. The lab/sheperd mix has a white chest and markings on her feet. Both great dogs. As to losing weight over 50, sometimes I think that is a good thing. While I mean no disrespect to our younger banded friends on here, being 50 we seem to be doing this for different reasons. Health plays a much bigger role in our decision, also we for the most part have suffered being overweight for many more years, and we have the 'wisdom and maturity' of our extra years on us that tends to help us make better decisions and stick to our new way of life easier. It seems we tend to make this more about a lifestyle change than a 'diet'. While we may lose slower, some might say, though there are a lot of big losers on the 50's board, we do still get to the same end result and seem to do better in consistency. Again I mean no disrespect to younger folks, they got their age, metabolisms, etc. going for them and are very successful to, we just seem to compensate for it in other ways. I hope I am making sense and not rambling. BTW, I am down 91 lbs and was banded just this past June, it can be done, never did I think I'd be here at this weight by Christmas.

Hey 50 & over gang We have a new spot

Ahh, JoAnn, so sorry for your loss. the past 2 Christmas seasons we have had to have a dog put to sleep. WE had 2 rotties. Two years ago the older one's hips went out, she couldn't walk and drug her paws to the point of bleeding. Then last Christmas the younger rottie went into violet seizures, turns out she had a brain tumor. It was so hard to lose them both so close together and both at the holidays.

Awesome, CONGRATS!! I bet those diamond studs look awesome as well as the shirt! Oh no Janet, I am glad you don't think that of me anymore! I have definitely changed my eating habits. Sometimes I don't know who I am anymore in that regard. No more chips for dinner. I am a very good little bandster and abide by my surgeons rules at least 90% of the time. I'm not saying I am perfect, I do have my 'treats' once in awhile, but those treats are small, planned and not every day like they were before because you know I was always going to start that diet 'tomorrow'. I eat Protein first, veggies 2nd and if room starches. I have needed a lot of fills but am no where near 'super tight'. I can eat 4 to 8 oz of solid protein. I do remember my surgeon telling me that I really needed the smaller band but for some reason the way my stoma was they couldn't get it fastened so I have the larger one, he prefilled it for that reason and I think it's taken me more fills for that reason to get to proper restriction. For a month or so there I got fills almost every week or two and was concerned I was leaking or something, but every time they took out the Fluid first to verify and it's always there. He said it was due to losing the 'fat pad' between my band and stomach. It's rare for me to eat 'slider' foods, I have to really be careful as I could get back into a chip or popcorn habit really easy. I tend to even stay away from the mini bags of microwave popcorn because all it does is trigger my cravings for the 'real stuff'. I liked it oil popped the old fashioned way on the stove with a stick of butter. I allow myself a rare treat when we go to the movies. We don't like many movies playing these days so that's very rare (twice since banding) but I do plan on seeing Marley and Me when it comes out. But all my meals are solid protein first, no sliders, unless you count oatmeal or egg beaters as sliders for Breakfast. However, I don't know if I would've changed my eating habits this much if it hadn't been for good restriction in my band, if that makes sense. With the good restriction, it made me much more mindful of the foods I was choosing. I find myself now choosing the right foods most of the time. I've become much more focused on health and nutrition especially since I found out I have that Vitamin B restriction. But it has spilled over into other areas of my life too. Heck I am even going to the dentist for a check up on teh 30th. I am a big baby when it comes to the dentist and tended to only go when something hurt really bad.

Arlene, don't you dare be getting down on yourself. You are doing awesome!! When someone is an alcoholic they can give up alcohol, a food addict has to eat to live. We can't just give up food. I now see so much of my 'hunger' was never physical hunger, but more of a head hunger. I was usually feeding something other than my stomach, my desire for food, boredom, stress, etc. You are going to do great!

    I'm here to help...

Okay, I get what you guys are saying now. I was reading it as though you needed to do well on your 'diet' and eat like you had restriction even if you didn't. Not sure I am making sense, but I see what you are saying about eating around the band etc. I've read so often on these boards about folks getting such tight restriction that they can't eat protein, eat lots of 'slider' and soft foods and then complain they aren't losing because they have super restriction. When in fact if they had less restriction and ate like a bander should, they'd probably be doing a whole lot better. It's not about how tight you are but about how satisfied you are on the right foods. Angela, 3cc may or may not be enough for you. Only you and your dr. will know. While 3cc's might be enough for one person to be at their 'sweet spot' it may be too much for another and not enough for another. We are all so different. Janet is right about not being so concerned with the # of cc's in our bands. Janet and I are on opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to fills. I think she has had only 2 or 3 and is at goal and over a year out from surgery, while I am only 6 mos out from surgery and have had 6 fills plus one prefill during surgery. My dr. even has a patient or two that have reached goal with great restriction and no fills, while I have 11 cc's in my band it's a 14cc band.

    I'm here to help...

Good afternoon! Been busy busy here too. I have something every day til Christmas. Today was a Christmas brunch, lots of yummy looking food but hardly anything I could eat. Everything had bread in it in some way or another. I just can't do bread easily and didn't want to try in a social setting. I settled on a chicken salad sandwich and took off the bread. It was okay (I don't like the taste of mayo and it had mayo in it) so I came home hungry. Of course, planned on nothing for lunch since I was out so am struggling with some food issues at the moment, but this too shall pass. Tomorrow is my company party, sounds funny to say since I just started work there. Sat. night is a part for in outreach we are participating in our church, our small group adopted a family and are providing food, gifts, cash etc. for them as they are struggling. Sunday is Christmas dinner at my sisters. Monday will be my grocery shopping and cleaning day in preparation for 22 people at my house on Chrsitmas eve. Tues. is just a hair appt and finish my cleaning day. Whew! As for learning better eating habits before a fill, isn't that what a fill and band are for? Personally unless I feel that restriction, I am going to eat too fast and too big of bites, that is what put me at 300+ lbs. Having the restriction is the only way I can imagine getting through the holidays and goodies. I don't want to 'white knuckle' it with will power alone through all the temptations. I feel my restriction loosening yet again and am in a panic wishing I had gotten a fill yesterday while I was volunteering. Oh and I found out fills are free for volunteers, they said it was the least they could do for us!! WOO HOO!! I still have not received my prize money for my Biggest Loser win. And I heard somethings today that have me a little perplexed. A couple weeks ago she told me the prize was $700. The day I won she said over $500. Seems the problem is, someone in the money dept (not sure what they call it there) that they have asked for the funds for is telling them the prize can't be more than $599 w/o having to withhold taxes and doing a 1099 form. I say so what. Or can't they pay me cash? So now I am hearing the prize is going to be a $599 check. Weird. While I am grateful for the win and the prize, on the other hand, I am wondering where the extra $100 is going? Sure if they paid me $700 and had to withhold the taxes I'd get close to $599 anyway but are they just keeping it now? I guess the prize amount was never published in the first place and I never imagined it was going to be even $500 so am grateful, but the whole situation has me going HMMMMM??? Does that make sense? I hit 91 today!! I was afraid to count all my loss from the weekend since I did take a water pill before my weigh in, but it has all stuck except for one pound!! I decided I would take my Thurs morning weight as official! Come on 100!!!!

    Daily News!

My dr. does lab tests at your 3 mos post op check then I thought they said again at 1yr. However, for some reason at my 6 mos they ordered another set, maybe he suspected something, I don't know. But part of it is a bunch of tests on your vitamin levels. And since this last tast was abnormal I am to be retested in 3 mos. after I start a vitamin regime. I started some B1 but found out it is not enough and need to add B12 to it so need to get up to Walmart to get those. I was just too busy today. Will get them tomorrow. I so know what you mean, Apples, I am so much more aware of my health these days. Allie, what kind of work do you do? Sounds like you are out and about a lot.

    Daily News!

Thanks gals! I still don't have my check, the gal that would give it to me was out ill today. But now I am hearing rumors of they don't know how much as if it's a certain amount they have to withhold taxes. HMMMM Hope there's nothing fishy going on. Today was my volunteer day at the hospital. I visited about 3 folks that had lap band surgeries and helped out in a post op nutrition class of folks only 1 week out. They came today instead of 2 weeks like normal because of Christmas eve next week. Found out today not only are my Vitamin B1 levels low, so are my B12. I have to take some supplements and get rechecked in 3 mos. I've been so tired, and she did say fatigue was a symptom. Hope it corrects itself soon.

Hey 50 & over gang We have a new spot

Nope, I haven't had one bite of salad since banding. Never liked it, got sick of it always eating it to lose weight you know. Once they told me in the nutrition class that lettuce and leafy greens can ball up and get stuck, that was enough for me. It would be different if I enjoyed more salads, I might try them then. I had a small piece off of hubby's prime rib, and a couple small ribs from an appetizer. The ribs were awesome but the prime rib was good too. I really wanted a roll though, but if I did, I wouldn't have wanted to stop at one either, so I avoided them.

Hey 50 & over gang We have a new spot

I WON!!!!! They told me today. I will get my money soon and she wasn't sure of the exact amount but it was over $500, rumor I heard was $700. YAHOO!! The man I was so concerned about beating me came in third, another woman came in 2nd, I beat her by less than a percentage point. WHEW!! My kids joked last night that it meant Christmas just got better for them, I said no way, that money is mine! I intend to either put it in my cruise fund or my wardrobe fund. Speaking of Christmas, my son called while at the mall yesterday wanting Christmas ideas. I think I am getting an Ann Taylor gift card!! WOO HOO!! I usually think they are cop outs but this year would prefer the card than the item. My reasoning is after Christmas everything will be cheaper and I can save it to use for different sizes as I go down. We went to dinner last night for hubby's birthday, we went to Texas Roadhouse, had never been before. Oh my it was yummy!! My daughter and I can split an entree and are completely satisfied. I finished my Christmas shopping today so am going to wrap next. All I have left is food shopping for Christmas eve and I will do that on Monday. I was stressing over getting it all done and here I am over a week before Christmas. Now I can put my feet up, sit by the fire, put on the Christmas music and relax! HMMM, never heard of first bite syndrome, makes sense. Though I have never had trouble in the mornings. Now I am thinking maybe I need more fill so that I do?? HMMM but have had an issue with a first bite or two. Lynn, I remember my almost 2 yrs living in Delaware, I was never so cold in all my life. Even with our zero temp. readings here the past couple days. There was something about the dampness and humidity that I never adjusted to having lived mostly in deserty climates, though I was born in Wisconsin and lived there in grade school. I always felt cold there and only thing I could think of that it could be was the dampness.

I WON!!!!!!! Turns out the guys came in 3rd and 4th, another gal came in second. I won by a half percentage point. They told me today and said they'd have the dollar amount and check probably tomorrow but it was at least $500, I had heard $700 at one point. I lost 37 lbs for the challenge since Labor Day which was 14.6%. YAHOO!! Cathy, I love my Wii Fit too, but haven't gotten on it lately, last I looked at it my Mii character was sleeping. LOL VZ, good luck on the job. Allie, we had 60 degrees the day before our artic blast hit and the next day we had below zero temps. BRRR It's downright tropical today in the high 20's! (after 19 below it feels like it anyway, all a matter of perspective). I also finished my shopping today, only thing left is the food shopping for Christmas eve which I will do on Monday. I am wrapping as soon as I get my butt off the computer.

HELP!!!! I'm freezing!! -18 degrees here last night. BRRR still only 0 out. Cathy, today is my hubby's birthday too, we are going to dinner tonight to Texas Roadhouse I think for steak. I find out tomorrow if I win the Biggest Loser competition, I'm still in first place as of 3pm. I lost 7 lbs since my last weigh in there. I lost 14.6%, the guy that was neck and neck with me lost 13.6% and another guy laost 12.6%. So it is close. Also, got my first pair of size 14 jeans today. They fit so I bought them. LOL The pair I am wearing today is getting big so will replace those. I got them at Bass Pro shops. I was there shopping for hubby and never thought of looking for me and they were a decent price too.

Hey 50 & over gang We have a new spot

Definitely the hardest for me too. And before banding I thought that sounded so easy to do. I thought all the dietary changes, etc. sounded way more complicated. I think that part is easy, but still forget sometimes and eat too fast and take too big of bites. Usually happens when I am not being mindful of my eating or am too hungry. Can you California girls please send some warmth??? It was -18 last night and high today of only 3. Windchill is still like -12. BRRRRR I don't have my insulation to withstand this anymore, not that it would've kept me warm in this cold. Today was the final weigh in for the Biggest Loser competition at my local rec center. Weigh ins are until 9pm tonight but as of 230pm I was still in first place and my 2 biggest competitors have weighed in, so got my fingers crossed. I heard the prize was $700, should find out tomorrow. Also, hit 90 lbs lost!! WOOHOO!!! 10 more til triple digits and 15 more til I am out of the 200's!!!!!!! Never in a million years did I think I could say that. Went shopping today to Bass Pro Shops for DH's Christmas but got some jeans for myself. I liked the cut and fit and price, and best of all, my first 14's!!!
