New to the site, need advice getting started

I'm self employed and purchased insurance through Kaiser in Washington State that covered WLS. I'm not sure how it is in California but the Kaiser bariatric program is top notch here in WA. Make sure whoever you go through has the accredited bariatric center of excellence rating. There's a lot of shady WLS mills out there. Good luck! -
I have Kaiser and it took me about 8 months from my first inquiry at my doctor's office to my surgery date. Some insurance companies will approve people and have them on the operating table 30 minutes later it seems like. LOL

Bariatric tracking app for windows

Yeah, you have to use MyFitnessPal.com if you want to do stuff on your computer. They have a free service or a paid one. -
1 week minimum, 2 weeks if you can get away with it. It takes a while to feel energetic again. The pain is usually gone after a week.

I'm the same way. I have to keep some background noise going on whenever possible.

Still deciding which surgery uk
Ed_NW replied to Sausageandbeans's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I went with what my surgeon suggested. The gastric bypass has been around for over 50 years and he felt it was the best choice for long term success. He also sees a lot of people coming in for a revision from sleeve to bypass because they all of a sudden have an acid reflux problem that wasn't a problem before their VSG. As for malabsorption, it shouldn't be a problem if you get your vitamins and protein in as directed. Good luck with your choice! -
Any Other Sleevers who did NOT have to do liquid diet before?

I think if you start drastically decreasing your food intake before surgery, you won't experience the overwhelming hunger that a lot of people complain about post-op. If you want to decrease the chances of a fatty liver during your surgery, get as close to zero carbs between now and surgery. My surgeon only required liquid the day before to empty my stomach of solid foods. Good luck with your surgery! -
She had her surgery on 12/10/18. Good luck trying to get me in for a 2 1/2 hour psych eval and test post-op. LOL!

I've had gout for the last 20 years and was put on Allopurinol after my first attack. My gastric bypass was 4 days after your's. When I first started my pre-op diet and was loosing weight I had a bad attack in my right foot. Once my hydration levels got back to normal I was fine. Uric acid is flushed out in your urine so I always drank a lot of water and watched my urine color. As hard as it is post surgery, it is really important for us gout sufferers to tank up on clear water and get as close to a clear urine as possible. Ice and elevate until the attack goes away. The no ibuprofen rule sucks in times like these. One good thing about having WLS is the body's natural response to inflammation will finally kick in after the weight starts to come off. Good luck.

Looking good. Congratulations!

Kind of makes you realize how much of an addiction food can be. I tried comparing food addiction to alcohol addiction in a conversation with my brother once and he wasn't buying it. I hadn't done any research on the subject at the time, it was just a thought. I know now after researching WLS that it's a real thing. I can imagine that an alcoholic might have the same self destructive and impulsive thoughts when a commercial comes on about alcohol. I think about all of the bad foods that I love that got me into this mess while driving around but the scars on my gut quickly remind me why I shouldn't give in to the urge.

I was given Tylenol pills in the hospital. I was never required to take a liquid. You could dissolve them in your protein shake if you want.

I just had my first post op appointment today and was told they will do blood work at 6 months, 1 year and then once yearly.

Once you get your B12, Iron, and hydration levels where they need to be you will feel much better. You might check with your doctor and see if you need some injections or at least see what they suggest. Sans energy sucks. Good luck.

TMI question re. vomiting
Ed_NW replied to 2Bsmaller18's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
With the bypass, you don't have the stomach acid coming up with your food. If rejected, it will come right back up the same way it went down and pretty soon after you swallow it. It's not a bad experience, as a matter of fact it's a welcome event if it's not sitting well. -
OH, I was looking at the surgery date under your name. Must be a typo?
-
I second the don't stock up rule. I liked all broth before surgery and now I can't even handle the smell of it. Good luck with your WLS journey! The clocks a ticking!

If you had your surgery back in 1969 you should be able to take regular vitamins by now.

I hope all is going well with your surgery. You're probably in la la land right now. Try to start taking walks as soon as you feel up to it. Good luck with your recovery! -
That's crazy! Definitely listen to your body first then everyone else second. That elliptical is a kick ass machine! I had a hard time doing that before surgery. LOL

To tell or not to tell?
Ed_NW replied to Reducingraven's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I say before the surgery, nobody outside of your close circle needs to know. After the surgery when the weight starts to fall off, you can share the details with people in your life that might be struggling with weight. People in your life that won't benefit from your story don't need to know. -
I couldn't do shakes for a couple weeks after surgery. I drank the protein water. There's quite a few to choose from. Isopure is one. I just bought these from Amazon and they have 40 grams of protein.

Not that Interested in food
Ed_NW replied to Separ1418's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I get tired of the food that is rejected so I just do shakes most of the time. I don't think I can do bars this early in the game or I would try that.
